Hello everyone!

With 2016 around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to start this thread and continue the 2015 thread into the new year!

Similar threads from the past have been extremely helpful to me (and I'm sure) and many others.

Good luck to everyone taking Step 2 CK in 2016!

scored 88% in uwsa...made tons of silly mistakes....even though i knew the concepts i got wrong...i need more practice...done uw x 1.5 times...any source of equally good quality questions ?..in the last 10 days...

>265 student asking for advice and "needing more practice". Only on SDN.

Relax and take the test my friend.

my problem is that uwsa had questions from topics i am really strong in...it was IM heavy and had very little ob-gyn....and yet i got so many wrong...which means i am most certainly likely to do worse on real deal unless question distribution is similar to uwsa...
and my nbmes fluctuate by 15-20 points..and i have no clue of how to improve as there is no pattern in my mistakes...i just hope that the scoring curve is as liberal as people believe it to be....

Chill bruh. You got 267 on Step 1 and all of your practice tests for Step 2 that you've mentioned have been >260 = you obviously have the knowledge, especially if there's no pattern to the "endless" amount of mistakes you're making. Relax and be confident and you'll put it all together. Besides, I don't think anyone would argue that there's any meaningful difference in end result for a step 2 anywhere between 250-300 in the setting of a 267 Step 1.

Print permit button disappeared for me today, hopefully that means scores are around the corner on Wednesday. Took mine on 6/7

I took mine on the 13th, hopefully if you get your scores on Wednesday then mine will be out next week. Hope it works out well for you.

What's the correlation of the free 150 with the exam? Just finished it with a 74%. Block 2 killed me with an average of 59%, whereas the other three blocks were >80%. Going to take UWSA on Wednesday.

There's no correlation. Never was, never will be.

So I just wasted 3 hours, smh.
No, you got practice with more questions from the people that actually write the test, so not a waste at all. A lot of people waste time trying to figure out a correlation though.

Yea I doubt there is a correlation. I honestly dont even really think doing the free 150 was helpful. I got 94% correct but it didn't stop me from feeling like **** on the real thing. The questions are not very similar at all.

The UWSA felt like a better representation of the actual exam though still not as tough.

Last year I felt like I had 2-3 questions on Step 1 that came straight off of the Free-150. I guess I shouldn't be expecting that for Step 2.

Agree with gregoryhouse. Got 93% on the free 150 and would definitely say there is a good chance I failed the exam today. It is a ...cking beast... the worst is: you will recognize every disorder they present you within these 340-/+ questions....and you
still can't answer the question ...

Yes that was the most frustrating part. Its like ohhhh I know this one!!! then I'd get to the answer choices and be like WTFF!!! Hated this test.

Yeah, I also agree with this. Several times I anticipated the answer choice and knew the algorithm for next step cold from memorizing it from uworld. But...when I looked down to the answer choices I didn't see what I thought was sure the right next step, or whatever the question was asking. That to me was the most frustrating part because it makes you second guess whether what you studied or the material that you used was even accurate or up to date.

You guyzzz,

What book are you using to supplement? I just started studying yesterday for August 3rd. I am writing down explanations and making my own notes/looking up stuff from Uworld. Plan on doing it twice. And use Secrets.

MTB or FA CK 9th edition or SUTM?

I'm skimming SUTM and planning on going over FA for Psych.

Not a typical concern for gunners at sdn, but for other folk, how do you guys prevent ADD while doing uworld.
If only the pesky distractions would let one increase their efficency of doing more questions in a day's work.

Just got my score back: 271!! Beyond excited, was hopeful for a high score but definitely wasn't expecting this. Below you can see my write-up and feelings immediately post-test, happy to answer other questions.

"Also just got done taking the beast today, glad to answer any questions.

I walked out of the test knowing that I wouldn't change my studying methods even if I could go back, the things that were difficult were either EXTREMELY vague or I had no idea what the question was actually asking me. That being said, I felt pretty decent motoring through the test (probably averaging 7-9 marked for the first 5 blocks) save for block three where I ended up marking more. Then the last two blocks hit and I either hit a wall or the questions hit my weak points, ended up between 10-15 I wasn't 100% sure on (I mark ones that I'm not 100% on, including guesses and things where I may be 75% on). I think my exam had random blocks of 42-44 strewn about, I know I had a few right in the middle of my exam. What really frustrated me about the test was something that everyone else has echoed coming out; some questions are just so vague where you're like "I really don't know if the lack of a fever makes me rule this out or not but the other answers don't make sense either", or you get it down to a 50/50 gut call. There were only a HANDFUL of questions (maybe like 5-7) where I had no idea what they were even getting at (usually involving a picture or echo or whatnot) which was less than I was expecting honestly. On the whole I would say it felt similar to uworld, just a lot more vague and random at points. I thought it was honestly less difficult than step 1 in terms of breadth of knowledge but the dumb vagueness that kept popping up was frustrating.

As far as studying I went through uworld throughout the year and reset it again for a two week study period, also used step 2 CK (new version) which I would say was pretty helpful.
Step 1: 258
Shelfs: High 80's-low 90's raw score during the year
UW x 2, 82% average first time around, probably 95+% second time
NBME 6: 283
UWSA: 265
Free 150: 96%
Step 2- 271

I'm hopeful that I got a good score...but realistically it's going to come down to how well I guessed, which is unfortunate. I could see myself getting a pretty wide range from 240s-260+ (the latter only if I'm extremely lucky, not feeling great right now). For people that are still studying: definitely go over your immunodeficiency syndromes (I mean all of them in step 1, I had a super obscure one I wasn't expecting), brush up on murmurs/pediatric murmurs, and really really really know your diagnostic workup/differential for precocious puberty, primary amenorrhea, and breast masses. But it's probably test dependent (I probably had 10-15 questions on those concepts alone) so your mileage may vary."

So I just took my CK yesterday, here is my experience... Please chime in if you had a similar one!!

Felt pretty good after the first 2-3 blocks, maybe marked about 6-7 per block, of which I'm pretty sure I got half of them right. Then, everything grinded to a halt. The fatigue hit me like a truck, and I had to start reading through the questions multiple times because I'd keep missing things. I forgot simple facts, and spent FOREVER reviewing even "easy" questions. Eyes glazed over, and I felt like I was taking the test half-asleep. "CT or ultrasound..." I didn't even care by the end, I just ended up guessing to get it over with. Felt horrible after I finished the last block (only 42 questions, every other block was 44).

I spent 3 weeks studying during which I completed:

UW x 1, 85% average
UW: 3-4 blocks of incorrects
UWSA: 262

I read 3 chapters of MTB, but mostly used UpToDate and Medscape to look up things I wasn't sure about.

Step 1 was a 261 and I've been getting upper 80s-low 90s on all of my shelf exams this year, so I thought I would be okay. I definitely underestimated the difficulty of this test and hugely underprepared...

As of now, I can count 12 questions that I for sure got wrong. Of these, at least 5-6 were entirely due to stupidity, not a lack of knowledge. Not a good sign. Definitely was one of the hardest tests I've ever taken, and I seriously feel like crap. Anyone else with similar experiences?

I feel like this s a set up for a > than 270 post in a month 😉 -jk

HOLY CRAP.

Found out I got a 272 today!!! How did you call it?!

I honestly could never have believed this. After the test, I felt like crap. I felt like crap the entire last 3.5 weeks. Almost every day I would read something or hear something that would remind me of some stupid mistake that I made. I told myself that I should have read more books, done some NBMEs, even pushed my date back... I rarely post on any forums, but I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing their own terrible experiences with this terrible test, which definitely gave me hope over the past month.

Step 2 CK is a 9-hour long beast of an exam. You'll take it when you're the most burnt out you've ever been--at the end of a rough third year, or even after some rough MS4 sub-Is. Frankly, it's the hardest test I've ever taken. I hope my experience alleviates some of the fears of those who haven't taken it yet, or just finished... it's definitely horrible, but trust yourself and trust your preparation. You'll be okay 🙂

congrats man! i read ur step 1 post a while back and I recall you felt like you had under-performed (albeit still posted a great score) so here's to kickin CK's butt!

@blueshockey @StNicCage @Journey09

Congratulations on fantastic scores!

Would you mind answering a question or two? Did you take the Clinical Mastery Series NBME exams for IM? If so, how did you do? Would you say they correlated to the real shelf?

Did you use any other resources besides UWorld?

What was your first pass UWorld percentage?

Congratulations again! Go celebrate!

Bruh...the first pass UW % and resources used are right in the 2/3 of the posts. And why do you keep asking about the IM shelf in this thread? It has it's own thread in the clinical rotation forum.

I'm not interested in what they used for Step 2 dedicated studying at this point in time. That's why I asked about what else they used, because perhaps they used something else for each shelf. Not all of them posted their first pass UWorld percentage, and I highly doubt they are going to mind answering any of these short questions--if they mind, I probably won't get a response. No prob. I ask, and will continue to ask (yes, in this thread), about the IM shelf because I am curious to know whether there is a correlation between IM shelf performance and Step 2 performance.

Hola,

I did take the clinical mastery series form 1 for IM, I didn't get any wrong. I think I ended up with like low 90s on the actual IM shelf. I felt like the vast majority of it was fairly indicative of the real thing but there were definitely some curveballs I wasn't prepared for at all.

As far as step 2 is concerned, I used step 2 ck first aid (I liked it better than MTB which I had read like 20 pages of, YMMV) as a supplement to uworld and then looked up topics that I felt weren't presented clearly in either resource (used uptodate mostly for these). Busted out step 1 first aid for a few sections that I was super weak on (immunodeficiencies and murmurs) but other than that didn't use it. I know a friend of mine went through the rapid review at the end but honestly I forgot about it.

First pass uworld percentage during the year (tutor, subject) was like 83-94%. Second pass which was timed random ended up with like 95%+ I think? After that I redid my incorrects and marked questions (that I either had gotten wrong, thought the explanation was good, or felt like I wouldn't remember clearly).

2/3 of them did if you read the posts. But alright, do whatcha gotta do.

Wow, 100% on the first Clinical Mastery Series form, how many days/weeks before the shelf did you take it? Would you say UWorld was the primary reason you did so well on this and the shelf? Did you go into clinical rotations with a background in clinical medicine? Or was your only foundation step 1 knowledge?

Let's see...I think it was the weekend before we took our shelf, so I was already about 7 weeks in at that point. I would say it was a mix of uworld and previous step 1 knowledge. Probably like 60% of questions I felt like it was memory from step 1 that was helping me (step 2 uworld may have reinforced those concepts however). I don't want to give the impression that you need an amazing step 1 knowledge base to have success, because you definitely don't, but I think it gives you an advantage going in to studying (i.e. some uworld questions I didn't take notes on just because I remembered the concepts/pathophys pretty well). I didn't have any backgroud in clinical medicine, my score probably just reflects a LOT of studying in addition to getting pretty lucky as far as the material I was tested on (in terms of playing to my strengths).

Thank you for this. I was >260 on step 1, but only got 79 (80%) on the Clinical Mastery Series form 1. Then again, I was only 5 weeks into IM at the time, and thus 6-7 weeks out from my shelf, but I still want to do better.

I really appreciate your honesty and willingness to help 🙂 Congratulations again on a sick score.

WHAT WERE UR NBMES AND UWSA SCORES

Didn't take any NBMEs, but my UWSA was a 264. Overall UWorld (2nd pass, did 1 during third year and 1 during dedicated) was a 85%.

Thank you so much!!!

I'm not really sure what the Clinical Mastery Series is, I've never heard of it before now. I did not do any NBMEs because they don't give any feedback, and I've heard that the UWSA is predictive enough anyway.

In addition to UWorld, I skimmed 2-3 chapters of MTB and 2 chapters or so of First Aid, although I didn't think either was that helpful.

I completed UW on random, timed. Did 3 blocks per day over 3 weeks, and ended with a mid-80s average if I recall correctly. UWSA was a 260+, but I didn't take it in one sitting... Definitely would recommend doing it at once to simulate fatigue haha.

Hope this helps!

Took the exam two days ago:

UW during third year: ~78%
UW second pass during dedicated: 87%
Used Anki from topics I struggled with, not much else.
UWSA: 265

Step 1: between 245 and 260

Walked out of the exam like I just got steamrolled. Questions were vague, ethics were rough, there seemed to be two right answers for everything OR I had no idea WTF was going on in the prompt. I was so shaken that I started to doubt myself on the questions that were supposed to be "gimmies." In the first four blocks I was flagging ~18 questions per and finishing with 1.5-2.5min left. It got a littler better near the end with respect to flagging and time, but DAMN.

I was shell shocked afterwards.

Currently trying to figure out how I'm going to explain my step 2 being lower than step 1 or just apply to a different field all together.

I wouldn't change the way I studied, I did it right. There was no way to prepare for what I got. It felt nothing like UW or UWSA.

I will update when I get my score in hopes that the trend of feeling like **** but still doing close to practice exams continues, and in the future maybe itll help some poor soul in my current situation.

Got my score back. Was within 2 points of my UWSA.

Of course I'm happy about my score, but god damn that test sucked. I never want to feel like that after a test again.

Can anyone who recently got their scores back delve into MTB vs FA. Some of you said it helped a lot, others said you stopped. Did you randomly read either during UWORLD review or did you guys try reading either of those prior to UWORLD? Thanks

Does anyone know if NBME usually gives scores back the week of the 4th of July? I'd be really annoyed if I have to wait an extra week.

Hey guys. So i wrote my exam on 9th june 2016, and trust me i felt like leaving the room in between. Options seemed hard and i couldnt find a definite answer.
I got a decent score in step 1 and for step 2 i did MTBs and uworld ( Key to the exam). So before i tell u what i got i want to give 3 tips.
1) Give step 2 after step 1. There is a reason it is called step 2.
2) Everyone reads and understands. What lacks is the ability to do the exam. So prac alot of nbmes and uwsa's.
3) In ck dont worry if your exam is not going to well. Trust what you got in your assessment tests. Uwsa for ck is so predictible that you will be amazed.

So in the end i got a score in 250s.( Thank you god)

If you guys have any question. Let me know.

I went back and reviewed the 2015 thread and it looks like July 4th was on Sunday and scores were delayed. One of the users that posted a write up waited 5 Wednesdays for their score. So realistically, it looks like no scores this week. I'm super bummed because I took it 6/13 and am dying for my score.

Hi all,

I have been following SDN for a long time and thought it was time to post something. I took step 2 CK yesterday and like everyone else I feel like I totally bombed it.

Background:
IMG, graduated in 2010. 3.5 years of clinical experience, almost done with my ph.d. in cardiology.
Have not yet taken step 1. Passed step 2 CS (first attempt) June 2015. Wanted to start with step 2 CK right away and kinda did, but I have minimal change disease and had to delay my studies several times due to relapses. The last three months have been kinda dedicated, but since I am doing full time research, I also got "interrupted" by a bunch of manuscripts etc.

Study materials:
Own notes from medical school, Uptodate.com, Pestana, Kaplan Psych., Kaplan HY videos, UWorld (mostly timed, subject mode, 86% overall, but sort of a mix between first pass and marked questions), CMS (4 for pediatris, 4 for OBGYN, 4 for neurology, 2 for surgery, 2 for psychiatry, 0 for internal medicine).

Assessments:
Free 131 (3 weeks out): 95%
NBME 7 (2 weeks out): 265
UWSA (10 days out): 265 (90%)
NBME 6 (7 days out): 271

I felt I was ready after this, but I had really big trouble falling asleep the night before and probably got somewhere between 4 and 5 hours. Exam felt like it went on for ages, and I had to read a bunch of questions twice towards the end. Question stems were much longer than NBME, but only a bit longer than Uworld. Finished each block with 5-10 min left (vs. 15-20 in NBME and 10-15 in UWSA) and then went over my marked questions (up to 15 per block). Still, the main problem was that I felt they were really vague and I spent a lot of time going back and forth between two options on at least 10 questions per block - and in a not insignificant number of these questions (next step in management), one could argue heavily for both options.

OBGYN and pediatrics felt like the most difficult parts for me, and there were challenging questions in GI, ID, and hematology as well. Surgery, psychiatry, ethics, biostatistics (only one abstract with 3 questions; no drug ads) all seemed doable.

I am usually quite good at remembering the things I find difficult (and maybe even moreso because I saw most of those questions twice) so I jotted down a very long list and looked up stuff on Uptodate etc. Worst case, I probably got around 80% correct. Best case with some luck, 90%. I just hope I get more than 250. Right now, I feel like everything just sucks.

Good luck to all of you!
