Rumor has it that Dr. DeYoung has already called a few people to offer them a seat for 2007. Has anyone recieved a call yet?

I got a call 5 min ago!!!!!!!!!! Wooooh Yoooooh! I'll be there in the Fall!!!! (can you guess USN was my 1st choice?)

My Stats:

-Great interview (Dr DeYoung said that my interviewer was really impressed). I used the feedback on this site to prepare (not a single question stumped me.....I felt really prepared for the interview).
-4.0 Science, 4.0 Overall at a community college
-Lots of Pharmacy shadowing (Hospital and Retail)
-Volunteer at Hospital
-Member of Pre-Pharmacy Club

THank you! I chose the Utah Campus (10 min. away from my house), and Dr DeYoung said that I am guarateed that location. I am still finishing my pre-requisites; I'm taking H. Anatomy and O. Chem II this semester, and will take Physiology in the summer.

I got a call from Dr. DeYoung today too. It was at 12:27 pm (MST). Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to him. He left a message on my voicemail stating that he wanted to "follow-up" with me and that he was sorry he could not do it today but was just heading out of town and I should call him on Monday. I am hoping this means I'm accepted. :) :) :) If accepted I've chosen to attend the Utah rather than the Nevada USN campus.

hey, congratulations? Did Dr. Deyoung call you on your cellphone or home phone? I hope today was not the only day he called for the first batch of interviews. Crossing my fingers for the next 2 days!

It seems that they are granting acceptances to highly qualified applicants for Utah campus. What about las Vegas campus.Anyone got accepted to Las Vegas campus?????

This question was posted in someone's review from last year- does anyone think it is a trick question? How would you approach it?
"Pharmacists are well-versed in drugs and drug-body interactions...do you feel that they should be allowed to prescribe medications? Why or why not?"

:luck: For anyone interviewed, (especially at the UT campus and those who have heard back acceptances.) - what tips can you give that you did that most impressed the interviewers?
Any further ideas not given on the interview feedback forms?
THANKS SO MUCH >nervous for interviews< ....not interviewing for a couple weeks...:barf:

I had this question and answered it in my own way (can't guarantee its an acurate response to the question, but hey, it must've been alright cuz I'm in!)This is what I typed up before the interview (I said some of it, but you know how it goes under pressure):

"No. The system is designed to put pharmacists into a position of safeguarding the patient's well-being in a number ways. One of those ways is adding another supervising watch on the medications that are prescribed by another professional. You take away either the physician or the pharmacist and you have decreased that level of safety and assurance. On another level, pharmacists usually don't have the time or facilities to give a physical to each patient, assess their symptoms and analyze test results of blood work, brain scans, or any number of results that only Highly specialized people can assess and then feel adequate enough to prescribe a medication for treating the patient. I am an important step in the process, but by no means would I presume to think I AM THE process."

The interview itself is weighed heavily towards your acceptance/admittance, so I'd role-play and practice your answers as much as you can (but when it comes time to interview, try to relax and don't "sound" rehearsed).

I'm sure you'll do great! Especially if you've already checked out previous Q's from the feedback section, a bunch of ppl at the interview hadn't known about this place :(

hope that helps.

My only issue with this is that I know of prescribing pharmacists - some of the hospitals in UT have them, I don't know if it is a new development or what - but they are out there. I think they work with doctors on INPT/OUTPT type teams and such, so they don't wipe out the need for a Dr. but I was just wondering what everyone thought of the situation...does anyone know if it is seen as largely controversial/accepted and new fangled...? I think the more someone can do for the patient is great, plus it is a new and interesting thing for the profession...but to what point do they need to not overlap? Opinions? This is why I am worried it is a trick question...can it be ok either way as long as it is defended? THANKS!

as of 2006 in Utah, certain maintenance meds can be refilled/per the pharmacists. I don't know all the details but when I shadowed at a pharmacy the pharmacist did b.c. and blood pressure off of labs. Personally as a patient that is great, saves time and money. (I know he said if labs weren't within certain values and current that the patient had to go to the Dr.)

I'm sure it is!!! I'll see you P1 in the fall!!!

Congrats to you all on your acceptance to USN! It seems that all of you are choosing the Utah campus. It was the exact opposite scenerio last year, everyone wanted the Henderson campus! Both are great I hear though!

so only people who put utah as first option heard back? when will applicants who placed henderson as first choice hear back?

I came across this question on the interview feedback page and would like some help with it:

If you were working on a Friday evening, when no Dr.s are around to fill a prescrptn., and a patient desperately needed meds...what would you do?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! :)

For those who got accepted, were there any semesters where you were part-time? And did the interviews ever ask any questions about your course load? such as why did you take only 12 units this semester, etc???

if there is no physician around to write the patient the needed rx and the refill runs out, I'd look at the med that he/she is in need. If it's just something that can wait like zocor or aciphex, I'd tell him/her to wait until tomorrow. I'd look into the OTC stuffs to see if there is anything that can hold him/her overnight. If it's an emergency med for his/her emergency situation, I'd tell him/her to go to the ER. If it's just something plain crazy like viagra  (there are people running out of refill for this thing and try to get laid over the weekends...all sort of crazy things nowadays LOL), I'd tell him/her to wait until the physician can be seen. If I am not involved in any collaborative aggreement that allows me priviledge to write rx, I'd not do it. All you can do in this situation is try to alleviate the patient's pain as much as possible. That's all I can say, hope it helps! Probably people in retail will have more experiences on this than I am. I only have exposure to hospital pharmacy and the pharmacy is always open in the hospital so needed meds are filled in a timely manner. Also watch out for the question that "if a patient comes in and starts yelling about the fact that the meds are too expensive, what would you do?". Good luck with the interview!

I was less than 12 units for my very first sememster, but never again. They never asked me anything about my course load...only took more than 12 units a couple of times...it helps with the GPA

Thank you Ivp! I've worked in a hospital pharmacy as well so unfortunately I've never experienced this before. Anyone in retail care to elaborate on this?

If the patient is only requesting a refill on a medication that they have had in the past, and if the mediation is not a controlled substance (II-V) you are allowed by law to advance a three day supply. At this point, the pharmacy will try to contanct the doctor on the next buisness day to aquire refills for the patient. However, if the patient has not filled this prescription in some time, the pharmacist may use his own discretion in deciding whether or not to advance the medication. Unfortunatley, there is nothing that can be done in advancing a controlled substance, the only thing you can really do legally, is offer to call an on-call doctor, or suggest that the patient calls the on-call doctor. Hope this helps...

Yes, one of my friends who got interviewed on Jan 17 th received a call from Dr. DeYoung informing him that he got accepted to Nevada campus! he got a BS. I got interviewed on the same day whith him but im not a BS holder. this could be the reason I did not hear from Dr DeYOung. But any one, I got accepted to another school, and nevada is not my first choice. the only thing I like it is 3 year program. I dont think they have a good curriculum.

anyone got called from yesterday or today from Dr. DeYoung? If accepted, what are your stats. I haven't heard anything yet and oh the waiting is killing me.

hi, I have not heard anything too.:(

you're right, all the ones who got accepted have 4.0 GPAs.
sigh:idea:

I have never taken a quarter less than 12 units. During my Freshman year, I took around 15 units per quarter (the university I go to has a quarter system). During my Sophomore, I took more than 20 units. I don't think they really care how many units you take per quarter/semester. They only care about your GPA, whether you have a B.S. or not, and how well you did on the interview. Hope this helps. For everyone who is waiting to hear from USN, I hope you hear from them soon!

sigh....i have interview yesterday, i thought it was wild! i didn't feel stress at all until after my interview! 2 faculty 1 student...guess how many questions they asked me!! not 6 not 7. but the totally is about 20 questions!! what the hell??? i was asked all the questions that you could think of, i mean it~~ they also asked questions from the interview feedback, however extra questions are being asked as well~~ jeez, if i don't know anything, then i'll be screwed during that time!! urrgggg......still can't believe it!

Wow! Can't imagine the stress you went through. Did you have simple one word answer questions?

I was interviewed too, and I was asked about like maybe 10 or 12 questions. These are the ones I can remember: why pharmacy, why usn, leadership, another leadership, how a pharmacist should motivate other people working in the pharmacy, about the pharmacy i work at, conflict questions like two of those, what would I do if someone did not treat me professionally, and scenerio. I think that lasted for like 12-15 minutes or so. Then they asked me if I had any questions for them, and I asked them 4 questions and that lasted about 5 minutes.

So the most the interview lasted was 20 minutes, and they were running behind too. The professor that got me was like sorry we're running behind, we'll ask you some questions and then give you a chance to ask us some questions. I said yes, I actually do have some questions for you, and she said, well if we run out of time you can ask them to the tour guides and they should be able to help you. So I think maybe she didn't ask that many questions of me 'cause she thought I had like a ton of questions to ask? Also maybe 'cause they were running behind?

I interviewed with Dr. Fan, Mr. Brock, and Ms. Quyen Nguyen. I was prepared for most of the questions, but they could tell I was nervous. I think I was actually nervous 'cause I was so excited about the program, it really seems like something I'd just love to do and be good at it too. The staff seems so friendly, I was just thinking about how much I would just love to go to the school, and I guess that made me kind of nervous.

So, my voice wasn't as strong as I would have liked it to be, I could tell it was quavering a little which sucked. The only one I was really stumped on was when they asked me about a conflict I had specifically with someone at work, and maybe I'm just lucky or something, but I swear I have always got along with people at work and I never get into conflicts with anyone. So I told them I hadn't had any conflicts with coworkers, but there would be lots of situations where I had conflicts with patients so they asked me like how would I deal with a conflict, and how to handle a difficult patient. Lots of questions (especially the leadership ones) I didn't have very strong endings to. I wanted to come up with more things to say, but I just ran out. But the ones that I was prepared for, I thought I gave them pretty good answers, but I don't know, I just think I didn't do that great of a job.

I think I need about a 35 out of 40 on my interview. I heard someone say that if you get 91 points then you're in for sure. They give 28 for science GPA, 28 for cumGPA, and 40 for the interview. Im not sure what the extra 4 points are for. I heard some people say that its 2 for bachelor's and an extra for Masters and one more extra for Doctorate. But then I also heard they factor in how many pre-reqs you've taken, and I don't know where those points would fit. I've got 4.0 in science, 3.9 cumGPA, and a B.A, but I've only taken 5 of the required 8 pre-reqs. So, hopefully, I wouldn't need too many points on the interview, but I didn't think it went to well, so I don't know. ok, I've got to go to class right now.

Mine was tough as well :( Although the faculty was so nice.

I got an email from Dr. De Young today about financial aid info. Did anyone else get that email?

I had an interview last week and didn't really like the school. it didn't seem like an overly friendly place, though the faculty were, it didn't seem like the students were friendly. The faculty members that interviewed me were very nice but the student on the panel had such an attitude problem. She asked me about a topic in pharmacy and when I took 5 seconds to think of sometihng she said in a rude tone "Well if you want to be a pharmacist, you think you'd know something about going on in pharmacy today"....Whatever!....I was also asked to define professionalism...meanwhile that same student has her whole ear full of piercings.....Let's just say it's not on one of my top choices anymore.

Wow! THis school is complete crap!!! I am glad I did not apply here!! I almost did :eek:  !!! This school has got to be one of the worst pharmacy schools out there. like the Steven Henagers College of Pharmacy!! or one of those crap schools no ones heard of, but just pop up out of nowhere  !! The faculty may seem friendly but there just greedy bastards:smuggrin: that want your money and dont care what happens with your future career:scared: Think about it, look at how many they are accepting... a *@$%-load!!! There is not as big a shortage of pharmacists as you think!! People are going to find it hard to get jobs!! And youll be in a lot of debt!!:scared: :scared:

THE POINT IS IF CRAP SCHOOLS LIKE THIS KEEP POPPING UP AND ACCPETING MORE AND MORE STUDENTS, THERE WILL NOT BE A SHORTAGE OF PHARMACISTS AND WE WILL BE BACK TO WHERE PHARMACISTS MAKE $60K AND HAVE HARD TIMES GETTING JOBS.

Hello,
I am curious about how many of SDNers were there on Feb 17. My day started in a horrible way and i feared if i could make it to USN's interview bcoz of all the hurdles i had during the journey.
I had a flight on Friday evening to Vegas, already paid for room and rental car. But, unfortunatley my flight had been canceled becoz of bad weather and the next flight was in the morning at 8.30 am local time (with two stops) and would arrive vegas at 11.30 am vegas time. Go and get your rental car and then drive it to USN would take another 30 to 45 min to the minimum.
So i canceled everything from this city and rearranged another flight from the next nearest city in the morning so that i would arriave in vegas airport at 7.55 am. I rented a car and drove to nearest city which was 185 miles away. I arrived there at 10pm found a motel 20 min away from airport. Weather was still bad with snow and wind. I went inside my room and turned on the heater and waited another 45 min and the room was still cold.
I tried to call the operator and realized the the phone was not working. So i went downstairs to talk to ppl at front desk and noticed that they did not have power at front desk. i mentioned my problem that i could not sleep in my room bcoz it was too cold. They gave me another room which was smoking. I grabbed two bags and some files and went to another room. That room was smoking and it smelled really really bad that i could not stand it forget about sleeping. I went downstairs talk to the front desk. Then they gave me the keys for another room which was non-smoking. so i went back and get my stuffs and moved to another room. I turned the heater on and went out to eat. When i came back i felt that room was not warm enough but i expected it would go ok after some time and tried to sleep. Heater turned off automatically (i dont know what time) then tried to call the front desk and noticed that phone was not working. I was hoping the heater will work soon and tried to sleep wearing jackets. No it did not work and it was so cold and windy outside i did not have courage to walk outside up to the front desk. Finally, i woke up and put my socks on and then remembered a hair drier in bathroom. It was attached to the wall so i broke a piece of it which was attached to the wall and turned on all night to warm myself. LOL
I woke up about 2.20 am in the morning started listening the interview questions and answers and at 4.00 am i left the motel and hit the road to airport. I had early morning flight. Arrived at vegas at 7.53 am. I knew i would be 30-45 min for the interview. Called Dr. DeYoung, it went to his voice mail and left the message that i would be there around 8.45am. Finally, i entered the orientation room 5 min before it was over. I believe you guys must have noiticed me if you were there. LOL. That was me.
I had interview at 9.30 am so dr. DeYoung came and informed me that he moved me from 9.30 am to 11.30 am interview to let me catch up some breathe. I was in the tour after a while and asked tour guide about my interviewers. There was another guy in the tour who mentioned me that he was in the same group and he was the last one to go. And then i said, wait a min, Dr. DeYong moved me to 11.30 and said that he would move the last person in my group to my place at 9.30 am so that i would go for interview at 11.30. I looked at my cell phone, it was already 9.33 am and asked the person to check with dr. DeYoung about it. He went off and i countinued the tour for some time then a man rushed asking for my name and informed me that it was my turn for interview. LOL
I mentioned him that Dr. DeYoung moved me to 11.30 am. He did not seem to listen to me. There was Dr. Mark waiting for me. I mentioned the whole deal in brief. He was such a nice person, he asked me if i need rest or do not feel like ready for the interview, i could take rest. I said, I am fine and ready. So we went into a small room for interview. Dr. M. Dcerbo, Dr. Zeidan, and Ms. Johnson were the interveiwers.
It was 30 min interview and all of the questions were related to whatever i had mentioned in my application and the answers i was telling them. I was a little scared of usn's interview bcoz i badly wanted to go this school and i had pressure to utilize this opportunity to the fullest. I did not want to get out of the interview room putting on my head and regreting that i would have answered it differetly.
But, i already had enough for the day, so i was very prepared for the worst. Interview went so fine that i am now ready to forget whatever i had suffered in the couple of days. I am very much impressed with the faculty members. There is a quotation, " do not judge anyone with the answer, judge them with the questions they ask". So true. They were such very professional. I really want my professors to be like them. I am very much impressed with their mature and calm behavior.
Oh, in my interview, they asked me why do you like us and why did you choose pharmacy? Why not PA or DO? How am i going to use my other degrees to this profession? Leadership skills? Professionalism? Group conflicts? Some hypothetical questions like what would I do if the community boycott me because i am too good? How am i planning to pay for the school? Negative aspects of the school that i had attened yet? tell me little about urself? How did you improve ur application since last year? Are you prepared for the fast paced rigorous program? One more thing i like about this interiview was that it went so smoothly that it appeared more like a conversation than a question answer session and those questions were in an order and as a part of follow up questions of my answers.

I wish i would get dr. DeYoung's phone call before march. LOL.
I think feb 17 was the last interview in the month of Feb at USN (Vegas) and the next interview will be in March 12 (vegas). So i am crossing my fingers that Dr. DeYoung will give us a call before March 12 (Vegas).

Now i am into a waiting game again. LOL and hoping it would be last waiting game before i enter pharm school.

Thanx for reading that was a long one. LOL. have a nice day . (Posted on Feb 19, 2007)

On April 3rd, after 45 days of waiting. I got a call from Dr. DeYoung around 9.32 pm that I have been accepted in USN. (happy ending).

hi Ray1234, you story sounds really painful but you did make it through: that's a good sign! The waiting game is absolutely terrible as I am still playing it now so welcome to the club LOL But I am glad that you made it through though. When I was there at USN, my homestate had a snowstorm and my flight got cancelled and everything got really messy so I totally understand what you've been through. ANyhow, it was all over and now we are waiting and waiting... and waiting ...

I was there on Feb 17. Sorry that Ray had hard time. I also drove by myself 5 hours staring early in the morning. I arrived in Las Vegas 6:20AM. Had plenty of time before I interview my turn. We(specially SDNers) all wish we did OK on our interviews to be accepted by this school. I like USN due to their specialized block systerm. The school was very private and small but professional. Chances to get into this school is not really really bad if you were invited to interview. Thus, Let's wait till to the last minutes.

Hello,
I am curious about how many of SDNers were there on Feb 17.

Hey I'm sorry you had such a hard time. I had a similar experience at another school so the best thing to do is what you did, keep your composure and do your best. Plus, it's usually people who jump thru hurdles that get in.

Speaking of getting accepted, I got accepted to USN...wooowhoo!!! ;) If you can't already tell, I'm thrilled to go to this great school.

Ray1234, I was in your tour group. That is pretty amazing that you turned a bad situation into a good situation, where instead of arriving at the interview at around 11pm, you only arrived an hour late. Anyways good luck.

I think from what I heard on the interview, we have around a 20-25% chance of getting accepted, since he said they will interview about 400-500 students and about 100 students will get accepted.

I thought they are calling approximately 500 students and accept 140 for Nevada and 80 for Utah. That means about 220/500. There must be students who choose other pharm school rather than USN. Thus I thought the max ratio is 3:1 and min ratio is 2:1. Isn't it???

Yes I heard the same thing, so the ratio is ~2.5:1. Last year they accepted ~140 students for Henderson and ~50 for S Jordan and they're working on expanding their campus in Utah in the coming years.

To lily83: Congratulations! When did you interview, and how did you originally think you did on the interview (b/c of course, you know did great on it now! :) ) Also, are you going to the South Jordan or Henderson campus?

I was there for the interview on Saturday the 17th too.. but I don't remember seeing anyone late come in. Haha, I wasn't really paying attention. Anyway, I just received my acceptance offer phone call from Dr. Deyoung this morning. I was pretty shocked because I thought he normally calls later in March/April. I guess he's calling people early now?

I interviewed on 2/17 and I thought I did awful on it. Seriously, I was so upset on the ride back home because I went over in my head the things I said during the interview and i was like geez, why didn't I answer this or that instead?!?! but yeah, dont beat on yourself like I did :p

I'm choosing the Henderson campus but now that you mention it, I didn't ask or tell Dr. DeYoung about my preference...just got caught up in all of the excitement I guess.
