Congratulations! You called, or they called you? Mind sharing some of your stats for those of us still waiting?

I interviewed on *gasp* Nov. 6, so it has been like, what, 3 months aka 12 weeks. Two weeks ago they told me to expect something within two weeks, and they ended up delivering!

Anyway, they called. Check out my mdapp's if you want the stats or PM me if there is any other info I can help ya out with.

Thank you. I was hoping to hear something next week, but it looks like probably at least 2 weeks for us 11/20 folks. I am going to call next week anyway.

congrats bro! see you in the fall. always nice seeing another washington state guy making the transition to DC.

Wow...congrats to everyone getting in!!! Looking at everyone else's stats, I don't think I could even compete for an acceptance at this point. Thank goodness I applied early!! These next few years will be incredible..

I feel the same way. Applying early helped me out too.

I have to ask something which I used to know the answer for, but now I need re-confirmation.

If one enters USUHS, the committment after residency that one owes is: 7 years. But if the residency is longer than 4 years. Does the service obligation increase after the 4 year residency mark. For example, if one does IM residency and then follows up with 3 year Heme/Onc fellowship. The residency+fellowship length is now 7 years. Would service committment now be 7 or 10?

I ask because with HPSP, the service obligation is 4 if the residency is 4 or less. But after the 4 year mark, the HPSP service obligation length is now the length of the residency.... This is why a GMO can really really lengthen one's military committment.

Oh, and I am a Nov. 6 interviewee... haven't heard anything! But congrats to everyone else above!!

for all of you who have interviewed at USUHS already...does the school send out a CDC background check from AMCAS before an interview? because im scheduled for an interview in 2 weeks and I was wondering if the CDC background check was from another school that I already interviewed at in Dec (Penn State).

thanks for the replies.

When I interviewed most people had received the background check info in the mail prior to their interviews. I and several others did not. USUHS was aware of this and just had us pick up the packet during our interview day. They give you two or three weeks after to send it back to them. You can always call and ask, though.

if you do the fellowship in the military (FTIS), and if your payback counter is NOT 0, then you will not incur any further obligation.

I worked it out here:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=583213

see post #8. (I have 6 years prior, so it works out nice, carries me right to retirement). If you're nonprior, then you'd have to serve an additional 6 to get there.

To add to Brocimus's post, USU doesn't use the AMCAS background check so that must be from the other school you interviewed at. Sounds like there's a little good news coming your way, congrats.

ok thank you.

I received an email from USUHS about security clearance before my interview in a couple of weeks and I thought the AMCAS background check from CDC email was related. Hopefully I'll receive some good news next week.

About how many people were present on interview day? And for attire, what were women wearing? I prefer skirts, but I sense it will be quite cold....

Thanks! 🙂

Yes, thank you for the response. Also, I think if you do Civ. fellowship, you incur 1/2 year... for every year...

I didn't count how many people but it was FREEZING outside and too warm for me inside, lots of walking too,
I was there as a spouse so I left after a bit and I talked to some people I wanted to talk to

I was really late in getting my secondary materials into USUSH, but was offered an interview a couple weeks after I submitted in January. I will be interviewing at USUHS on Feb 26.

My question is this:

Are there still a fair amount of seats available at USUHS, or will I be interviewing for a waitlist spot? Are they still handing out acceptances?

Also, I would hope that the 3 month turn around that a lot of people have been posting recently is greatly shortened. That's killer to wait that long. I'm still waiting on my state school who doesn't send out the decisions til late March and I interviewed there in September.

Anyway, USUHS looks like a great school and I'm excited about their program. I don't have any prior service experience, but many of my relatives are retired military (gpa, uncles, etc.) Good luck to all of you waiting to hear back!

They're still handing out a few acceptances to people that interviewed back in November. This late in the game (isn't Feb 26. the last interview day?) I would almost definitely say you'll be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist. The waitlist isn't such a bad thing since there is a ton of movement and they, I think, they place you on the waitlist based on the strength of your application. So if you have a stellar app you could be put right at the top.

wow, anyone else get the e-mail with like 10 attachments that have to be filled out? where to start?

Yeah me too. Lots and lots of paperwork. Can't wait for June to begin!!

Thanks for the response mslall.

I will be spending a lot of money on travel to interview at USUHS for a possible waitlist spot. I hope you're right in that the waitlist tends to move quite a bit and that I will still have a shot at getting in. I have two other acceptances thus far, but I think USUHS is moving quickly to the top of my list. :xf:

Can you, or anyone else on this thread, give me suggestions on which hotel/motel is near or cheap and/or advice on staying with a current student. I am nervous about asking to stay with a student because I will be there two nights and not one. This is because the flight leaves back to Salt Lake at 5:30PM on the day of my interview and I don't know if I can make it by then, so I'm planning on leaving the next day.

Also, is it necessary to rent a car while I'm there, or is the metro an easy/reliable way to get to and from the school on interview day?

I wish I could be currently complaining about a huge packet of paper work to fill out for this school.... Hopefully in the next few months...:luck:

No idea what to tell you as far as specific hotels. I stayed with a friend who lives in Colombia Heights in DC. Anything in Bethesda would work I suppose. There are a couple of really nice looking hotels right by the Bethesda metro stop (which is only 1-2 stops from medical center.....like a 5 minute trip). You definitely don't need to rent a car. The metro is great. Its a decent (15-20min) hike from the Medical Center metro stop to the actual campus (apparently there's a bus somewhere that will take you the majority of the way). The weather was great in September, sunny and in the 50's, so walking in a suit wasn't that bad. You might consider renting a car if its going to be raining/snowing or you just dont want to deal with 10-20 degree weather. But the metro is totally reliable. It took me like 35(+/- 5 minutes) to get there from Colombia Heights, which is pretty much on the other side of DC.

You will not need a car. Take the metro and then there is a shuttle to campus. This information should be in one of your emails or there is a place on the USUHS website with travel information. You may also want to take advantage of the student host program. Normally it is only for one night, but at least it will save you one night of hotel expenses. Plus they can give you good advice for your interviews and they will help you get to campus.

You're right, you probably won't make the 5:30 flight as your day at USUHS will end around 4:00. There is an optional simulation center tour immediately afterwards which is well worth seeing in my opinion. You will be done with that around 6:00 if I remember correctly.

Sweet, good to know, glad to see it's moving already. I guess 11/13ers are the next round. god this wait is killing me. Oh well, I shall pass the time with GuitarHero.

And I shall pass the time with. . . Anatomy. :bang:

Hey guys congratulations on your acceptances...
Is anyone considering living in DC or does anyone know any USUHS students living there? Just curious as to how expensive it is. What towns are you guys looking into for apartments/townhouses? I know bethesda is absurdly expensive so that is probably not an option

It really all depends on what kind of a place you are looking at. The general rule I have found is that places get much more expensive the closer you live to downtown DC.

I plan on renting a 3 bed / 2 bath house (hopefully to share) within 1 mile of NNMC. I have found some listings in the $2,500-3,000/month range. Not exactly cheap, but being close to school and avoiding traffic is my top priority. I have found rush hour in DC worse than in Miami and LA. Purchasing the same would be in the $600K's, minimum.

1 bed / 1 bath apartments/condos in downtown Bethesda range from $1,200 to $2,000+. They are a bit cheaper outside the beltway. Apartment/condo parking can be at a premium as well $80-150/month. Purchasing the same would be in the $250K's, minimum.

Obviously these are all general numbers that I have found and I am sure there are some deals to be had.

Yeah I agree with the traffic, my fiance lives north of baltimore and we try to avoid trips between baltimore and dc because it is a mess. I was looking about 15-20 miles from campus and places there are more reasonable. I know it would be about 30 minute commutes each way, depending on traffic, and would not be ideal. What is Northern VA like? Any thoughts?

I think Northern Virginia is more expensive than the Maryland area surrounding the school. Personally I'm going to try to find something in the Rockville area that is within a reasonable walking distance to a metro stop. I'd rather deal with 30-45 minutes on the metro than 20 minutes in even light traffic, and you get reimbursed for using public transportation to commute.

me too, i haven't figured out if i want to buy a condo or if it would be pointless since i might only live in it for two years and then rotate...

Yeah what is the deal w/ rotations during the third and fourth year? Could we possibly spend the whole year away from the DC area? If you did, could it all be in one place or would you be shuttling around the country? What do people with families do if they rotate for an extended period of time away from Bethesda?

This was asked on my interview day I think. (or the answer is deep in this thread but I'm pretty sure it was when I interviewed) My memory for the exacts might be a little fuzzy though.

You can conceivably do all of your rotations in Bethesda or none of them. (they have students that do both) They also have people that pretty much move to Texas (Air Force people I think) in their third year and then try and do their internship there as well. They also have people that live like nomads for a while going to different hospitals for each rotation. I believe they said people with families tend to be the ones that opt to stay in Bethesda the whole time.

Agreed with Sir Gecko. You can do all or at least most of your rotations in Bethesda, or you can travel. If you travel, your family can go with you, but it's on your dime. That's why most just stay home. I think it would be fun to do at least one or two rotations somewhere else.

Hi Friends!

I interviewed 11/13. After completing multiple "quests" (i.e. completing 5 remedials =P) I received my rejection letter on 02/05. However, my question is do they always send out rejection letters considering dejected applicants to their USUHS Post-Baccalaureate Program? It states that "During April, your file will be reviewed with many others to determine your suitability for the program."

Is it naive of me to think that this is my silver lining to the dark cloud of rejection? Can anyone tell me more about this offer? After completing the 11 month curriculum which is a "condensed version of the first year medical school curriculum" is that a guaranteed acceptance to medical school the following year? The letter goes on to say that "there is no tuition required, and participants are furnished with a stipend to cover academic expenses and the cost of living."

Thank you for your help in advance!

Ok, I just got my letter today, I've been waitlisted for Navy (also talked to the adm office, the class if full).

I think I've given my stats previously, will do so again:
Interviewed: 11/20/2008
waitlist: 02/06/2009
3.6 GPA (both BCPM and overall), 32R mcat, BS,MS,PhD in chemistry, 7 papers, 6-months ED volunteer (admittedly I was a little light on the clinical side of things), and not any extracurriculars per I've been in grad school for the past ~4.5 yrs!

Hope this helps.

So I'm pretty hopeful about it. hopefully I'm at the top of the waitlist (but there's no indication on the letter as to your rank).

Good luck all!

Yeah, your at the top, unless my writing score of S is what got me in and R's just don't cut it any more...

I think timing says a lot about who they take, and the fact that you got a wait list letter so quick compared to everyone else who interview in Nov. (like the Nov 6th + people) means that they reviewed your file, marked "admit", and then sent the wait list notification, no second thoughts. They took two weeks longer than the rest of those on my interview date to accept me, but granted that is because my application is not as strong as yours, and I have the feeling that there was a bit more, how do you say, "deliberation".

Thanks for vote of confidence! Yeah I feel a lot better now that that wait is over. (If I can only be as patient for GuitarHero Metallica, coming out 3/29/2009, not that I have it marked on my calendar).

Hopefully will be seeing you all in Aug.

Well looks like I'm hoping for a spot on the wait list then. Good thing they are getting to the 11/20 people though.

Congratulations DrMetal! I have received no such letter yet.😱 Where are you in the US? Maybe it will take another day or two to get out here to the West. Is the entire class full or just Navy?

Yeah, I saw this. Army is probably full too, because I think they have just a few more spots than Navy. Oh well, a waitlist at this point is almost as good as an acceptance, right? Or am I mistaken?

A waitlist at any point probably = acceptance. Again, I think the consensus (not sure its fact) is that you're rank on the waitlist depends on merit, not timing. I'd assume army is full (class is 63 army, 51 navy, 51 air force, 6 PHS).

I'm in San Diego. I'd give it a couple days (delivery of snail mail is variable). Was told the entire class is full.

It's unfortunate that the class is full right now, but I'd definitely be optimistic about your chances of getting in off the waitlist. Congrats!

I had heard grumblings about this program as well and called the admissions office this morning. The program is by invitation only so there is no published material about it floating around.

The program is only offered to students who have been rejected by the admissions committee and for those that they believe would be a good match for the program. According to the admissions office, there is a guaranteed spot in the class "upon successful completion of the program".

Unfortunately, the program is not offered to applicants placed on the alternate list (such as myself) because we were deemed "successful applicants". I think this is kind of silly because it just relegates those of us on the alternate list to apply again through the normal channels and hope to get in next cycle. For someone like myself who is planning to go to an SMP program for a year (assuming i dont get picked up off the alt list), I would much rather spend the year that i have to take off anyways studying at USUHS and guaranteeing myself a position in the next class. This policy [re: alternate list applicants] doesnt make much sense to me.

That seems pretty weird to me. The program sounds like something I'd want to look into though if I was rejected. Though being ROTC I don't think the Navy would let me do that if I didn't get in. (I'm pretty sure my options are get into medical school now or go get a warfare pin and start up my quest again in a few years)

Ya know, if you bug enough people for long enough, I bet ya you might find something hopeful out there. Truthfully, that post-bacc doesn't sound that bad at all, its free, and the courses are probably interesting as well. The only question is if it counts towards retirement.

Less people pref. army because of the "lifestyle" from what I understand...

but it doesn't mean that I understand em

Bad news, folks. Got the letter today - alt list. 🙁. My stats:

Complete September. Interviewed 11/20.
3.6 cum GPA, 3.4 BCPM, 34M MCAT.

2-year mission to Germany for church. 6 months research. Tons of volunteer/service. Other stuff.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances this year?

WTF? That really sucks, I'm sorry. You seem more than qualified. Make sure you get medically cleared, etc. by the deadline so you are able to remain on the alt list, in case they pull people from it.

Do you have other acceptances or pending interview decisions? Have you applied for HPSP?
