So I went to:

http://www.cs.amedd.army.mil/obc/

in order to read up on this OBC thingy that I guess I have to attend. Half the links don't work and everything else is in acronyms that look like complete gibberish to me.

I tried downloading the power point overview and that was filled with equal amounts of nonsense 🙂

I'm downloading the movie now. Hopefully it will be more informative. Can anyone help me out? I'm just curious what we will be doing for the 6 weeks.

edit: I just saw that there is an OBC sticky. Makes me feel dumb 😛

It's not rocket science, don't worry, you'll be fine. Just make sure you get your orders, get your stuff moved, get commissioned and paid correctly.

If anything, I'd be more concerned about the academic firehose that'll be turned on when you start med school. It might pay to do some pre-studying, a little biochem, a little anatomy, just to wet your appetite!

I'm in the Georgetown SMP program right now, so I've basically taken the first year of med school already 🙂

I do have a few other questions, though:

1) I assume you take your Oath at OBC, right?
2) Is OBC when you start getting paid?
3) I'm hearing stuff about classes and what not during OBC. I'm not particularly worried, just curious what the material is about.
4) I consider myself in pretty good shape (I can bench ~75 pounds over my weight, can run 3-4 miles before I lose motivation, etc). I assume I'll be fine for any physical requirements they have?
5) Are we given a room at OBC or is it something we have to arrange before hand?

well, at this point, your best outcome is a spot on the Waitlist, and you'll probably be far down on it. That could result in a late acceptance (~August). So it really depends on your options.

Dr. Calloway told me that the waitlist is organized according to how qualified you are and how strong your application is, not when you interviewed. I don't know much about the waitlist, but that's what she told me on Monday.

From what I've gathered about OBC

1)No, you take this before you go to OBC
2)Yes
3)The role of the medical corps in the army, maintaining the strength of the "fighting force." CBRN stuff i'm sure. Stuff that about setting up camp on our "camping trips."
4)Should be fine. PFT is max push-ups in 2min, max sit-ups in 2min, timed 2-mile run
5)We'll stay in the BOQ or a hotel off base if the BOQ is full.

That's good to know. I thought it was strictly organized by timeline.

So, it's possible that a Feb. interviewee is place higher on the waitlist than an earlier applicant? And did she say that they'd tell you where you are on the waitlist? (I know it's not on the actual letter, but it would be nice to know. Knowning that you're #2 vs #80 can help you make plans accordingly.)

Yes, a later interviewee can place higher on the waitlist than an earlier interviewee... a waitlist that ranks you solely based on when you interviewed would be pretty silly. Though I think the date of your interview is a factor (according to one of the sheets they handed out on interview day, if my memory serves me right).

No, they won't tell you where you stand on the waitlist.

Yeah, that makes sense. I don't understand why they wont tell you where you are on the waitlist, how could it hurt? It's not like you'd know who's ahead or behind you.

Anyway, my neuroticism is starting to creep in!

Well to me it sounds like the reason they won't tell you were you stand on the wait list is because the don't want to have to tell you when they place a later interview ahead of you. If they can put people higher up on the wait list later I would assume that you have a good chance of moving both up and down on that list.

how are you all deciding how to rank the services? there's location, ... and that's my extent of ability to objectively rank, as I am non-prior service and thus am not familiar with differences in the branches. 😱

thanks!

I ranked the services based on the amount of GME available. The army has more residencies slots available than any other service, followed by the navy, and then the air force. The army also tends to send smaller numbers of interns on GMO tours, and to be honest, I've heard a lot fewer complaints coming from the army attendings, it does seem that a disproportionately high number of complaints on this forum come from air force physicians. I'm sure there are similar problems in the army but it seems like army physicians are less vocal about it, so take that for what its worth. The army also has the most slots for students at USUHS, so when I interviewed back in September there was also a higher chance for getting accepted. My interview experience also helped me decide which service to rank. I knew going in that the Air Force and PHS would be my third and fourth choices, respectively. I interviewed with an active duty army, and active duty navy officer, and just got a bad vibe from the navy interviewer. The army officer was great. So I chose the army. You dont have to fill-out the pref sheet before you go on your interviews, just before you leave the day of. So take in all the information you get in lecture sessions, talk to students and staff, and, in the end, go with your gut. I'm non-prior too and thats how I came away deciding the order to rank services. I think I did it pretty objectively too, my dad retired from the navy w/ 25yrs so I got the whole "Did I drop you on your head when I you were kid?" line, but if when I explained why he was ok with it. And I think I may have been dropped a few times.

The Navy does have the best uniforms though 🙁

This is great reasoning. Good job in doing the necessary research to make an informed decision.

Mango, whatever you decide, don't choose what you think is the "least military like" service (we had this discussion going on another thread). If you're really not interested in the military, don't waste money on the airfare. If you are interested, follow mslall's logic. Go through the information (on here and elsewhere) about the various GME programs, measure your own interests, etc etc.

Congrats to the 11/6 bunch! (looks like that's where we're up to, and looks like all services still have slots open)

You're right, there are like 213819, which I think equals a bagillion dollars in uniform costs. ACU>>>>BDU

I just like the dress uniform(s). The "choker" jackets are pretty sharp

BS. There are like 213819 of them, and their utility uniform is old-ass BDU's still.

Not any more...now we have the blue digital cammies straight out of Street Fighter The Movie. Perfect for falling overboard and never being seen again...

Seriously! Is there anyone in the Navy who thinks these things are a good idea? Because if there is someone I've yet to talk to them.

who needs to see you when you can just sonic boom to get everyone's attention?

.... overboard? Unless you are secretly a transformer I doubt you can make a sonic boom just to get people's attention if you fall off the ship. (it isn't a terribly rare occurrence that someone who falls overboard cannot be found, it happens)

one more question, hopefully the last, sorry...
I have a nursing infant... my other two are staying with my MIL, did anyone take an infant...

No worries: there is a little nursing room in (I believe) Building A (it's the same building as the admission's office). It's in the women's bathroom right off the lobby.

Oh Junk, that's hilarious,
sorry
speaking of uniforms, what is the uniform at usuhs? is there one? I have been spoiled not having to iron dh's flightsuits, so I am hoping there will be no ironing involved... not that he wouldn't on his own but still

I dont think anyone wears flightsuits at USUHS. In fact, I think air force wears their blues 3-4 days a week and ABU's the rest. Army is in ACU's 3-4 days and class A's on one. Navy probably wears a different uniform everyday

Hey I've been digging through this thread looking for when active-duty types should receive their orders to report to USUHS. MILPERSMAN 1920-170 sets a baseline 3-months prior window, but says it can be exceeded in special cases blah blah blah. Is separation leave factored in to when orders are cut? If orientation is ~ 17AUG, I know I want to take AT LEAST two weeks of sep leave prior to reporting. Also, does anyone know if there is any sort of second-look / welcome aboard meeting prior to orientation? Does the Spouses Club do anything like that? Thanks in advance.

Ahh Street Fighter II. I remember when that came out on Super NES. I played it for 16 hours straight (what can I say, I was 13 and still thought girls had cooties).

Do the NWUs replace shore khakis (CNTs)? Whatever, it's all good to me. For paid medical school on AD, I'll wear a monkey suit if they want me to!

Ok, so I assume the adcom is in the realm of 11/13 interviewees. It's now almost 11 weeks for us 11/20 folks. I guess I'll give it one more week (they told us 10 to 12) then call.

From: http://www.new-navy-uniform.com/navadmin/343-08.html

"THE NWU WILL REPLACE WORKING UTILITIES, TROPICAL WORKING UNIFORMS, WASH KHAKIS, WINTER WORKING BLUE, AVIATION
WORKING GREEN AND NON-TACTICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL USAGE OF CAMOUFLAGE UTILITY UNIFORMS (CUU)."

So... the answer to you question is no. CNT's being service khaki will not be replaced. The wash khaki's will be though. (so like the cotton khaki's)

edit: though we do get those crazy new (old) khaki coats, its all a little confusing if you ask me and I'm guessing it just means I'm going to have to buy a bunch of new uniforms next year.

My unconditional ltr says orders will be cut after 15 May (something to do with AMCAS guidelines). To cover my bases, I let USU MILPERS office and this guy know I will separate/resign from USMC in late July:
LT. Bristol, Navy Personnel Command, PERS-4415
[email protected]
901-874-4045 (DSN 882-4045)

Do you need to resign first from USN as well? That may require lead time, like LOA. My separation leave is counted backward from my approved resignation date (which is the day before commissioning into USN).

I am Nov 6.... and still have not heard (Adcom says my file is out). I know some Nov 6 have been accepted.

Yeah, I'm not sure what that means. I'm not sure if they decide who's getting accepted from a certain day, then call all of them at once. Or, prolong the process and call as they accept each individual.

If the latter is the case, then they may still be looking over the 11/6 applicants and you might be getting a call.

Wow, so this must mean 11/13 (and most definitely 11/20) is still with the adcom. And so the wait continues.

I'm fairly certain they make decisions on an individual basis, not on a interview date basis. At least i'm judging that based on my experience.

Is anyone else troubled by their outdated/rarely updated website (especially the "new students- class of 2011" section on the students page)? Is the school "behind the times" in terms of technological infrastructure? I noticed that the projector used on interview day was pretty shoddy as well.

The technology there is fine. The number of times you access the school's website as a student will be counted on one hand and will usually be for figuring out some phone number. The projectors in the classrooms are all fine and are quickly fixed if something goes awry. I wouldn't worry too much.

I was told when I interviewed that the blackboard site was fairly useful and well maintained as well.

That's great!!! Congratulations!

Did you already get medically cleared?

Yeah, my medical evaluation was done like 12 weeks ago. They hadn't pulled it from the system yet, so I don't know if they had looked it over, but the doctor didn't say anything was wrong.

I sent in my security stuff approx. 8 weeks ago, so I'm thinking it should have been processed by now as well.

Congrats man!!! I'm sure that's some sweat off your back.

On a related issue, does anyone know how you get notified about security clearance going through?

I did my sf-86 like three weeks before my physical. I got notification that I passed the physical bout a week ago, but still nothing about security clearance. Anyone else having the same problem?

They don't call or send any notification out regarding your security clearance. I guess they assume that once you get an unconditional acceptance letter that it serves as your notification. I called about 2 weeks after I was conditionally accepted just to make sure and Ms. Hamlette went and looked for me.

So if you've been conditionally accepted already you could call to make sure.
