I replied to the email the day I got it. Luckily my grades were in, even though they don't have to be posted until the 4th. My GPA on my app was 3.6 cum, 3.35 BCPM. It's good to know others are getting emails. I got straight B's this semester. Think it will hurt me, or do you think they are just checking to make sure you aren't totally tanking your GPA? Oh and I'm really hoping to hear on the 15th.

I was interviewed without an LOA. If you were offered an acceptance, I'd assume that your LOA is on file.

Spoke with the admissions office this morning. Was told that they are just about finishing all of the October interviewees and will start on the Nov. ones very soon. So if you interviewed in Nov, you're likely to hear back sometime this month (Jan). If you interviewed in Dec, you'll probably here back in Feb.

As it turns out, I got disqualified for taking ADD medication, but I worked that out and reapplied this year (wish me luck!). Hopefully all of you who are accepted in a few days won't have to deal with that!

What is the issue with the ADD meds? My husband is on Adderall, but he's currently AD Army. Is this a military DQ or USUHS DQ? He was off of them for over a year when he first enlisted two and a half years ago. Anything he can do now to prevent an issue when he applies in the future?

Sure, he can get off the meds. To meet entry standards, you need to be off mental health meds for at least one year prior to the physical. Your husband might get a waiver because he is currently on active duty (all be it not commissioned) because retention standards are not as stringent. But if he gets a strict by the book doc doing his exam, it could still be a no go.

I'm completely baffled by them now, as I called last week (Jan 2 or so) and they said that I should have gotten a letter two months ago (meaning before I talked to them over the phone and they told me they hadn't made a decision yet) -- even when I corrected my address I still haven't received anything. I called today and whoever was supposed to handle that stuff wasn't in.....so I'm assuming that whatever 'letter' I'm getting isn't good news, which I guess will support the opinions that USUHS really is focusing on the numbers....I had AWESOME interviews and have a lot of really good LORs/ECs/leadership/etc etc but a few sub-par grades and a just-ok MCAT score that I'm sure the adcom couldn't quite get past.

I also emailed them to ask for some feedback/clarification but didn't receive any sort of response...

Well, the trend seems to be that if your numbers are a little low (GPA < 3.5 MCAT < 30), they may interview you, then alternate list you or wait on your application. So they may be holding onto your app for further consideration, maybe they'll accept you sometime this year, or waitlist you. I assume by your screen name you applied AF? Would you be willing to switch? (b/c I think AF is the most competitive).

Anyway, keep up your persistence. And definitely pursue your other possibilities, just in case.

No, they never sent any sort of letter, just email responses & responses over the phone saying to "check back later." It sounded from this time that it was either wait list / alt list ... which I am not too surprised with given my lower numbers, but it would be nice to know what "letter" they are referring to and why is hasn't come, although I've verified my address several times. Who knows...

And yes..I'm definitely AF....as far as switching I've already got my allocation with the AF and don't want to switch.......so........we shall see how it turns out 🙂

For a unique school that should really understand that the character of their applicants is essential for a successful student and career milmed physician, I am baffled at the idea that they are turning away exceptional candidates and looking for higher numbers.

I do believe that they'll be drilling into the alternate pool due to this philosophy, but its a shame that in the process they could make someone like airforcedukie bitter about the University as a whole. check out my pm, afd.

You're certainly right in that they're turning away good applicants. Hell I might be one of them, I still haven't heard yet (interview on 11/20, so still have some time).

But I don't think I'd call it an absolute travesty. USUHS is, after all, a medical school, and getting into an MD program is no small feat. And USUHS is a great deal financially, especially for prior-service folks. That plus an ailing economy probably made for an unusually large applicant pool this year. Of course, the size of the class didn't change, and so things got competitive. So how else are they supposed to discriminate amongst all the applicants? Unfortunately the answer is in the numbers, I think.

In any case, rest assured that the admissions office is operating like that of any other medical school (and now, like any other competitive medical school). Keep in mind that when you call them, you're talking to one of the admin people there (probably not someone that was on the admissions committee), and they can't give you the result (either good or bad) of your application. They've probably been given strict orders not to do so. Now they may give you a little hint, and you have to read between the lines. So AirforceDukie, you're probably right in your assessment.

Whatever happens, keep your options open, continue interviewing at other schools, etc. And if you applied really early, like you did Goose, you might just get in, so keep your hopes up (but don't let go of other opportunities).

I guess in terms of travesty im just frustrated with the system of US medical schools in general. airforceduke and i interviewed together so that was also a source of frustration (especially since she's rotc, rocked interviews, and i thought she'd be a lock....just frazzled at who they wont pick up)

EDIT: dukie, you mentioned that they wouldnt give you feedback. I asked about this too and they said that if you are on the alternate list, they cannot discuss any aspect of your application because it is technically still under consideration. I think after a rejection we could call and get feedback about what happened.

I thought that it had been discussed earlier in the thread that if you are rejected (ie no waitlist/alt list), they send you a letter. All other designations then (acceptance/waitlist/alt list) would be given over the phone during a status call on either the 1st or the 15th. Is that not correct?

i'm not sure where the 1st/15th rule came out, but I don't think that's a hard one. I think they've called on other dates as well.

I think the only time you'll get a phone call is if you're accepted (conditionally). All other decisions are mailed.

Reason why I ask, is that you still have plenty of time (in the grand scheme of things) to perhaps retake the MCAT, and apply next cycle, that is if things don't work out for you this year, and if you want to exclusively attend USUHS (a sentiment that I understand!).

I'm always an advocate of taking time off in between schools. It could do you a lot of good. [I spent 4 years in a nice RL community in the Navy (of course you don't have to do the same thing!)] Time off is good for several reasons, even if it's just a year or so. You could use the time to exclusively study for the MCAT and better your score, plus you could take a job, make some money, gain some skills, pay back some debt, travel! (I can say, I've walked the beaches of Normandie and sampled every fish taco in San Diego).

they do have a "we cannot offer you a place in the 2009 class" decision. Alt list is not the worst of the worst, just like a waitlist of the waitlist.

That's good to know; thanks for the vote of confidence speedy. Still, it does make me quite a bit nervous. I interviewed Dec. 11th so if the waitlist is already building who knows how long it will be before I get there.

From what they told me when I was there (11/20) during my interview, they accept people all throughout the Dec. cycle of interviews. (The Jan/Feb interviewees are likely to get wait-listed).

So if that's true, and if what your recruiter told you is true, that means that they gone through all of the Nov. interviewees (plausible) and all of the Dec. interviewees (not so plausible). In other words, that means that they're several weeks ahead of schedule.

Plus they told the 11/20 interviewees that is would be at least 10 weeks (1/29) before we heard anything.

Anyway, so I wouldn't freak out if you don't hear anything tomorrow, I think we might be jumping the gun a little bit.

It's cool I understand the skeptism. Recruiters can be sketch. However, said recruiter actually is encouraging me to go to USUHS and even set me up with someone to meet with while on campus, is a current Navy nurse on an alternative duty tour, and claims his main interest that the Navy gets a good physician. In said e-mail he even encouraged me not give up on USUHS since the wait list does usually have good turnover. I'm pretty sure he's not just trying to bully me into HPSP.

A 100% certifiable claim - no certainly not. However, this is not my first go around with recruiters. I have dealt with many and feel pretty confident telling the good from bad and BS from the credible.

All can take the info as the wish, but I am 99% confident in it.

I think another thing to remember is that I'm pretty sure that USU sets aside a certain number of Navy acceptances to the USNA kids, who didn't interview until mid-December. I don't know how many interviewed, but 6-8 slots out of 50 wouldn't be unreasonable.

Pretty Much. It was actually SFC Jane Recruiter. She was an LPN (enlisted nurse -- only an associates degree) and her attempt at dissuasion fell along the lines of "At USUHS you're going to have to get up early in the morning and do PT and stuff (false), and if you do HPSP you won't be distracted by military regulations, like cutting your hair."

Laughable at best.
