Yeah, I know! You're lucky it doesn't snow in Houston, or nobody would be able to find you!

Hahaha... hey, wait... that was at my expense... Eh, it is the honest truth, though. I hope I never get caught up in an avalanche, or I'll definitely be screwed

P.S. Anyone want to get together Friday night? There is a GREAT Cuban place downtown.. a place with traditional cuban food and yummy mojitos.

I know exactly where you're talking about, and you are quite correct, they serve up a mean mojito. Hopefully you're having fun, unfortunately I need to get up at 6am on a Sat., cause I'm ******ed, so I won't be partaking in the high level of boozing that I wish to. There's always tomorrow night

On another note, considering the high percentage of albinos in our class, maybe we should have a contest to see who in fact is the whitest of the white folk, winner gets a year membership to darque tan to satisfy all their wants and dreams relating to getting skin cancer

OK so I don't think Im as white as you guys but Im pretty white. My gf on the other hand makes snow look pretty dark most of the year. But the 10 minutes we spent by the pool last week gave us both some "color". Ahh....the plight of the pigmentally challenged.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for being most pasty. Try being submerged for up to 90 days with no sunlight, just ultraviolets lights. The only sun I saw would be through the periscope.

What's the name of the Cuban place for those who want to venture out on our own?

Just out of curiosity, are you going to baylor or UT-Houston?

This may be a dumb question, but are you guys wearing on Saturday? It sounds to me like shorts and tennis shoes for 12:30-4:30 at the Rec Center and then go home and change into something nice for The Lounge at 9:30.

That's what I figured. ALthough I also was wondering if people would want to hang out between events, in which case there may not be as much time to go home and get all ready and stuff.......any thoughts?

Prolly not going to the lounge, so just street clothes i guess.

For those of you that are in Houston, do you know if there is ample parking at The Lounge? I'm curious because I would need to find a hotel relatively close so that I could take a taxi there and not have an astronomical fare! Thanks. 🙂

I was also curious to see where some people are staying for the upcoming weekend event.

Yeah I was wondering that too. I will be staying at my parents place that weekend so I will be driving myself to all the events.

Hey guys. On the welcome weekend form it says we can bring spouses and "family." Does that mean parents? Is this an event I can (or would want to) bring my parents too or should I save it for the white coat ceremony? Thanks.

I'd say save the parents for white coat.

So, the 'family' reference is for folks with kids to bring the little crumb-munchers?

I brought my mom last year thinking it was a family event, but she ended up leaving after about 30 minutes. Last year, we pretty much just hung around, ate, drank beer, and got to know each other.

Should I bring my swimsuit? Or just shorts?

I was wondering that myself. The paper did mentioned "pool games". I think I'm just going to bring mine and keep it in the car so I can retrieve it if I decide I want it.

You mean.....we aren't playing Pool?? Damnit. Does anyone know if they are restricting access to the gym that day to regular students, or, if they are just letting us in on top of everyone else?

for those of you who like to do a little jogging consider participating in Run for the Rose 5k saturday morning.

the race is held in honor of a former UTH student and peds resident who was diagnosed with a brain tumor during her first year of residency and who later died. if you saw the show Houston Memorial (originally on ABC and then Discovery Health) you would know her as Dr. Marnie Rose.

couple questions concerning Welcome weekend if anyone can answer them. Thanks so much 🙂

1.) Can we park at the rec center, or do we need to ride the rail or take a bus?

2.) Is my boyfriend going to be totally bored at this and should I just let him stay home?

Also, I live in houston so if anyone needs a ride from a hotel, information, or anything else just pm me.

Thanks,
Trish

Ugh, I hate pool parties. Guess I'll still be there though, since I already paid my 35 bucks. 🙄

You better come!

I and a handful of other Baylor accepted students have been getting together at Trudy’s Monday nights at 8 for happy hour and would like to extend the invitation to all the Austin area UTH folks. I figure since we are going to be spending the next 4 years as neighbors we might as well get to know each other and have a few drinks at the same time. If you would like more info feel free to PM me or utlake.

I'd like to but I'm not 100% sure I could make it. I'm susposed to arrive in the late afternoon, but flights from Atlanta are always delayed. The question is how long.

Anyone in the Sugar Land area? My parent's recently moved out there and I'll be staying with them.

Hey I'm from Sugar Land...where are you from originally?

Jumping to a very different topic from welcome weekend...has anyone caught any of the first two episodes of Grey's Anatomy? I've been wanting to watch it but missed both of them because I kept forgetting...just wonderin thanks

Well, I can't go to Houston without going to my favorite Cuban/Caribbean fusion place. I am going to be there at 9p and sitting at the bar and I have bright red hair and I will be drinking a Mojito (tall clear drink with mint leaves in it and a sugar cane stalk sticking out of it). I'd eat there but it is too expensive for the $7 I make an hour. 😛

Cool! My folks just moved out there and I'm not familiar with the area. It's been about six years since I lived in TX and all I can remember is that the traffic was bad to get to that area. I might think differently now. This will probably raise eyebrows but I don't think Houston traffic is bad anymore after living in Atlanta.

I would guess the one by SpiderHouse. I have golf lessons till 8 but I'll high tail it over as fast as i can. Any one else in Austin down?

Can't wait to meet you guys at welcome weekend. Unless some disaster happens I should be there. 😀

After finishing my first day of real work, I can't wait to start med school. It even amazes me how much of a bum I am. 1 day down, 4 months to go... By the way, are any school officials going to be at the Lounge, cause I'd hate to make a real ass outta myself if it's not already too late. Acceptances can still be rescinded, correct? Here's to rocking the casbah saturday night, stock up on your glow sticks

I wouldn't worry about any school officials, whatever that means...but seriously, you're already in, you have no need to worry about getting kicked out at this point...now i have to get back to studying neuro so i dont fail out :scared: 6am in the lrc 3 days in a row 👎

Just curious...did anyone else have to get the varicella immunization? I felt so out of place when I went to the Shots for Tots building to get it. Plus when the people asked out of disbelief, "You've NEVER had the chicken pox?!?!"...I just wanted to be like yes I have, but I just wanted to come down here for fun and be gawked at while twenty three year olds run around the room screaming because they didn't want to get a shot... :meanie:

Does anyone know anything about summer jobs in the med center? I'm moving to Houston in late May and don't have anything to do until school starts....not to mention the poverty I may experience while waiting on financial aid 🙂 I've been so broke during undergrad I have no shame either.....I'll do anything except wear a big chicken suit and hand out flyers along Fannin St..........then again if the pay is allright.....

I had to get it when I started school at Emory. I've never had it either and I got similar reactions when I went to the doctor for it. They had to special order it for me and I was asked several times "Now why do you want this?". Speaking of shots, I probably need to get working on repeating my Hep B series. I only got the first 2 shots and was too lazy to get the third.

I had my first two hep b shots and then didn't get my third until 2 years later. The doctor said that with the first two you get 75% immunity and that I didn't have to restart my series again. So they gave me my third shot and said i was done with it.

Welcome Week was fun -- the pool party, then the social at night. UT-H students are VERY attractive. Whoa!

Cool nerds unite. 🙂
