I know a LOT of formerly single UTH students dating the dental students... in fact, the dental students are HOT, so don't worry too much about your chances in med school. 😉

LOL, Yea I guess I can always hope for some cute, single gay guys in the TMC 😀

On a completely unrelated topic, I like your sig!

Well, if you're looking for that, you shoulda matched at Galveston. 😉 I've got SO many friends who are like "So I have this gay friend who owns an antique Galveston mansion, and is looking for a caretaker for $100/ mo." 😍 But then, sadly for your sugar daddy aspirations, they're all in stable relationships.

Hehe, thanks for the 👍 on my sig - I'm so psyched that the Hitchhiker's Guide is coming out next month - it starts in theaters the day before I do the Hill Country Ride for AIDS in Austin, so it's totally on my "things to do before I break my leg on a 120 mile bicycle ride" list. 🙂

LOL, I don't think you get it...I'm *actually* gay. So I would be looking for a boyfriend, not a sugar daddy. Too bad UT-H administration reportedly prides itself on not having a gay group on campus 🙄

Does anyone know how hard it is to find places to live in the TMC at the last minute? I haven't even started looking yet. Am I screwed?

I'm driving with the rents today to go look at apartments and condo's in the TMC. Has anyone else looked at the condos at 7575 Kirby? The seem to be really nice.. just not sure how close they are to the medical center. Oh.. and getunconcsious.. I think there will be more gay guys in the TMC than you think. 😉 And if not.. Montrose isn't far away.. 🙄

7575 Kirby is pretty close to the medical center, as you will see when you go down there. I second the notion that you are not screwed - I went down looking for apartments last week and found some great deals. Good luck with your search! 🙂

Is anyone else planning on biking to campus? I haven't lived in Houston for 6 years and I was wondering if the roads around the TMC are safe for biking. I have a place that's going to be too good a deal to pass up but it's not off the rail and just a little too far to walk so I think biking may be my best option. Any thoughts?

From what I hear and see, there are a number of people who ride bikes to the medical center. I personally would not do it given how crazy the drivers are around here, but that's me. Someone in my lab bikes from the rice area. When I looked at an apartment on the east side of hermann park, they said a lot of people bike too. Just out of curiosity, where is this great deal you speak of? If I know the route you'd have to take I could give better info.

can you list out the deals you are tlaking about for apartments? I have found the ones from the apartment locations to be unreliable. I was looking at apartmentwiz.com

There are maps of the TMC and vicinity. They include bike trails, shuttle routes, etc. Maybe you can request them from the school, maybe?

I walked or rode my bike for the first two years without a problem from my place just northwest of Rice. My current roommate lived in condoland during our first two years and also rode his bike without any problems.

Hehe, I get it... I should have said "IF you had sugar daddy aspirations," since I was implying that people who own antique houses in Galveston are often pretty well off (tho, you don't have to be...and you don't have to be gay to own a house down there either, but according to some social butterflies I know, it sure can help 😉 ).

That rumor about UTH sounds rather bizarre - even conservative A&M has GLBT groups on campus. If UTH wants to be one of the top medical schools in the country, it shouldn't tarnish its image with diversity problems.

Well, you're not going to find a place actually IN TMC (unless you like living under a bridge?), but you're not screwed. Last year I found a nice place within biking distance only 2 weeks before I moved out of my old place (tho, I had to drive by and pick up a flier, this wasn't a commercial complex). There are some close places along Dryden, around Rice Village, north of Rice University, south of TMC near Braeswood.

As for BIKING in the med center, I feel safer there than elsewhere in the city. Yeah, people drive crazy, but just don't TRUST any of the drivers (ie, don't think they see you, just give then time to pass, etc), and cyclists don't have problems in the medical center.

In fact, the CRAZIEST place for me to bike is slightly outside TMC, at the stop signs where ppl are trying to cut through and avoid TMC lights. No matter what, I ALWAYS assume there will be some crazy driver charging through there, so I'm extra careful.

And there are bike racks all over the place - in most of the parking garages, in front of buildings, etc. There's a map available online that tells you where most of the bike racks are located, here: http://www.tmc.edu/tmc-safety.html

Just bicycle with the assumption that everyone else is crazy (and thus, you have to be sane and alert on your bike), and you'll have no trouble with bicycling in the medical center.

Does anyone know if a TMC shuttle bus runs on Kirby? I asked today at Kirby Place and 7575 Kirby and they gave a vague yes. Wasn't too assuring considering the amount of money anyone would spend on a lease without a guaranteed way to get to and from school. 🙄

Im pretty sure that none of the TMC shuttles go to that area. I checked out the apartments across the street from there (7550 kirby) and they have their own shuttle that costs 50 cents each way. I would say call them up and ask if you could ride that one if you need. Otherwise, just go through the ut houston student affairs site. I think there is a link to parking and the tmc shuttle route. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the info on biking. My biggest concern is that I haven't used one in 10+ years. I hope it's true that you never forget...

Well, bicycles are not my forte...I learned to ride a motorcycle before a bicycle ( I never understood why anyone would want to peddle when a flick of the wrist would get you somewhere 😛 ). Hopefully the you never forget it applies to two wheeled modes of transportation too! 😀

Same thing with me - I just got a bike this year, and before that my last bike had a banana seat and *streamers*. You'll be fine, tho - statistically, you're more likely to be in a car accident than a bike accident, and I've never had any trouble with cycling through the TMC. Just get a good helmet for when you decide to do stupid things (like, in my case, get "clipless pedals" that strap you into the bike 🙁 ). :luck:

I'm seriously considering, I made an offer on a condo this weekend that is only a mile away, so it seems like a waste to me to try to drive and park and then ride the shuttle.

**considering biking is what I meant, sorry, just got back from spring break and my mind hasn't made it yet

Does anyone know how we will receive our financial aid, as in a lump sum or monthly?

I wouldn't mind biking to/from class either...but how practical is it in Houston weather. Between the unpredictability of when it will start raining out of nowhere and the 100 degree days half of the year why not take the shuttle? just wondering...

Hi. I just wanted to ask you a few questions about UT-Houston.
So it turns out that I graduated from Rice University in May (2004), I am getting ready to apply to med school in June for 06, I am interested in UT-H, and my sister graduated from UT-H. The problem is that I am not a Texas resident. Will the fact that my sister attended UT-H, and me obtaining a degree from a University in Texas help my chances at all?

Oh, and by the way: Congratulations!!!!

You have what are called "ties to Texas" and that should help. Have you been living in Texas since graduation? If so, you could probably qualify for residency.

lots of people get scooters, something to think about.

all at once or half each semester.

Well, in inclement weather, I would definitely ride the shuttle, but the heat doesn't bother me all that much, I grew up near Houston, so I'm used to the strange weather.

The weather is definitely going to be my downfall. I'm originally from west Texas, where it is just hot and DRY. Then I moved to Austin for college, where the weather is slightly muggy, some of the time. So, Houston weather is going to be a really large shock to my system - especially the humidity! 🙄 But I figure I'll get used to biking to school in 100 degree/95% humidity weather...I'll just have to keep reminding myself - I'm going to medical school! 😛

other than the UTH bookstore, do you know of any place that sells UTH Med School paraphernalia -- bumper stickers. those stickers where you can iron onto shirts. nice sweaters and tshirts. etc. my dad would love them as gifts.

You will be able to study at Rice U's library, which stay open 24hrs sun-thurs. While I was an undergrad there I always saw alot of med students there.

I know this is a benefit b/c the TMC library closes at like 11pm or 10pm.

Cya!

Unfortunately no. But my dad keeps on telling me to apply b/c it is so cheap. I know that Rice has really strong ties to Baylor though.

thanks for the info!
cya!

Which direction is the condo from the med center. Is it along Holcombe, Fannin, etc?

The fourth year class is selling clear-backed window-stickers. They are $5. PM me if you are interested, as my roommate is the primary salesman.
Here is a pic of what you'd be buying: sticker

It's on Old Spanish Trail across from the VA hospital

is there parking for non-rice students nearby it?

you have to park at the bike track and walk or talke the shuttle if you don't want to pay for parking

otherwise you can park in the central garage, park near the stadium, or park illegally in a student lot (and risk getting a ticket)

Please tell me we're not talking razors here, or I am afraid that I may now be going to a foreign medical school in order to save face. Unless of course they can do tricks on them, which would destroy the "poser" image I have of these razor-totting med students and rebuild my confidence in them. Jibbing on a razor is about as sweet as it gets!

correct. any the boys who have something to prove get crotch rockets 😉

either way, you get great parking. but personally, I love giving $10 to the TMC.

hmm, probably time for me to start working on FAFSA. grrrrrr.

bump from the 3rd page.

I wonder if I can get extra loan money for a Vespa 😕

I'm curious....how much does it cost to park a motorcycle at the medical center?

I thought that one would have to pay $10 dollars a day as well...if not, maybe I can convince my parents to let me bring my motorcycle to Houston...

Hmm, I see ppl putting them next to the bike racks for free.

It's free to park in the garages...i see ppl do it all the time

Geez... We were on the fourth page 😱

What was with the completely useless david hasselhoff flyers? 😕 Shouldn't they be sending us useful information?

Ok, that area is not bad. If I were you I would use your car b/c when it rains it is not fun to have to wait out in that mess. And believe me when I say that the med center gets flooded very easily.
When Tropical Storm Alison stalled over Houston, the majority of the city was underwater. The med center was one of the worst hit areas b/c it and Rice sit on what was once a flood plain. UT-H, Herman, Baylor, MD Anderson, ST. Lukes, Shriners, Methodist, etc... all suffered major damage.
Hey KristenLS how close are you to the Bayou?
The reason I ask is because I want you to be careful about water mocassins (poisonous snakes that love wet areas)
have fun and study hard!

In fact, that stupid TNT movie is supposed to be about Hermann Hospital (a UTH Hospital). Go Ricky Schroeder!!

I was slightly confused about the flyer .. but hey i guess they are just trying to keep it fun and in a light mood. Although I dont know if I want to do what David Hasselhoff approves of 😛

I have a quick question. When I was looking at places to stay in Houston all the places said that I would have my pick with which electricity provider I would want to be with. Where I currently live we only have one provider... so I'm not really sure what my options are. Does anyone have any suggestions on the cheapest company?
