******UT-Houston Class of 2011*******

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was actually hoping to plan a DFW area get together sometime next week, so any suggestions about when and where would be great!

There is a place in Addison called the flying saucer. Its just a bar though. its the same chain as the place they had the social for San Antonio. There might be a better place that I don't know about since I don't go out a lot in the dallas area

Yeah, I mostly know of places in Ft. Worth since I went to college there... When would you like to get together?

Oh whenever. I'm not busy. I'll just be chilling at home playing Wii on my dad's GIANT tv 🙂 we could make it a facebook party!

Awesome! How about Thursday around 8, or should we do later like at 10?

Dude - I love the flying saucer. But then again I love any place with Guinness on tap 😉 I heard a good suggestion for a pub near the TMC with a trivia night - we should meet up the night before the welcome weekend thing if nothing else is planned.

You going to be able to make it to Welcome Weekend, Sarah?

I am!! My family is just going to try to come down another weekend since they won't make it to Parent's weekend. I'm really excited about Houston!

Oh and Thursday should be good! 8 would probably be better for me because then I can drag my bf along 🙂 Let's make it a facebook date 🙂

Awww I wish I could be there - that's my birthday.

Anyway - I claim the night before Welcome Weekend for an SDN meet if anyone is interested. 🙂

Oh that would be awesome too! I don't know anywhere in Houston though. I'm lucky if I can get anywhere alive. But dancer, it might just be me and you and my bf. Two of my really close friends want to come too because they love The flying saucer and beer. But they are awesome so I know it will still be fun 🙂

EvoDevo was telling me about a pub around the medical center that sounded cool (very flying saucer-esque). Plus if it's Med Center/Rice Village area it shouldn't be too hard to find (I can always pick you up too. Are you going to stay with a med student?) I'll find out more info about where it is. 🙂

No worries! I know we will have a great time!

Ana, you are more than welcome to stop by and say hi if you can! And I can also give people a ride to our little get together if need be.

does anyone know how strict UTH is on immunization documentation. I have copies from my drs office (it isn't the same office as my dr is at now) and i'm having my dr sign it but that's about what I have. Will that do probably?

I don't think they made a big deal about it when I showed up. I hadn't had a PPD done in a bit so I just had them do it across the street at the student health office and that was that. A printed, signed copy should be perfect.

just make sure you have all the dates for each shot. when you apply for away rotations in your 4th yr and get ready for residency you will need all that info again, but not an actual shot record.

Ok I should be ok then. i didn't think they could be too strict because my friend that is a m1 didn't even turn hers in and she only turned it in because she remembered in January. Thanks for the advice 🙂

And come out to the Flying Saucer in Addison tonight at 8pm!!!! YAY UTHouston people in the DFW area!

Anyone having trouble using paypal to do the criminal background check?

What kind of trouble are you having?

I figured it out. It wasn't letting me use my debit card, so I had to use my credit card (which I try to avoid using whenever possible).

12 ortho matches isn't bad, especially the one that matched to Mayo. Surprised that there weren't any neuro...

yeah, we had 12 of 14 match in ortho. several of those guys could have gone anywhere, but had reasons to be elsewhere. people like me were just happy to match. 🙂 Right now there are 15 people applying to ortho next yr.

I assume you are referring to neurosurgery....we don't have our own neurosurg program or rotation and I think as a result people don't become interested. I didn't hear of anyone who wanted to do it. In the past there have been some went into it. There are neurosurgeons (hence our Level 1 trauma status) so there are people to hang out with if that is what you want.

Hey, does anyone have info. on the the timeline for OOS applicants to UT-Houston? Are any of you out-of-state?

Btw, congrats on your acceptances 👍

Still waiting..... 😳

I was under the impression that UTH has a neurosurgery residency program. Am I wrong?

I just searched FRIEDA and it has no program listed, here is the link to search all neurosurgery programs: http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/
there are 2 in Houston. 1 at Baylor, 1 at Methodist

looks like they may be working on one:

there's a ton of negative feedback on greenbriar and lanesborough at http://www.apartmentratings.com. can anyone comment on it? has anyone tried going through an apartment finder? the opinions on crime are troubling.

I always take those things with a grain of salt. People that seek out those sites usually have an ax to bury. Anyone know of a site that will show you where bus stops are? I'm trying to find a place relatively close to the 87 (I think that's the number) route.

BTW, I like you guys. If I go to Baylor can I still come to your parties? 😍

incidentally i toured greenbriar and lanesborough and found both satisfactory. gates and live-in security are really as much as you can ask for.

lanesborough's a little big, though. and the office... aiya.

How much does UTH give us for a laptop? I looked online and couldn't find the amount.

I don't think there's a set amount. They don't actually budget a laptop in financial aid, but they say that when you purchase one you can bring them the receipt and they'll add that amount to your financial aid award. I'm not sure if there's a maximum amount however.

I think it is something like up to $2500, depending on what you buy.

Where did you get the $2500 dollar limit, and what do u mean depending on what you buy? Thanks for your help.

I read it online before they updated the information for our class. You have to purchase the laptop first, then turn in your receipts and then they will add that amount to your financial aid, I think up to $2500. For example, if you purchase a laptop for $1500, then $1500 is the amount you will receive. At least this is my understanding...if anyone else knows, then chime in! I hope this helps.

I had heard through the grapevine it was $3000 limit, but this could have been from a different school. But I did heard that they way it worked was you buy the computer, and then go see the fin aid people and they will add the cost into your budget so that you can get that money in loan/other fin aid. 🙂

If our fin aid and loans work like undergrad, then we need to purchase our laptop fairly early, correct? We would need to show the school our receipt before we apply for our loans. Unless we took out a separate loan for the computer.

Whatever the case may be, I doubt we have to rush to do anything. They're going to let us know in advance. I doubt they assume we know the financial aid system inside and out already.

I would definitely normally agree, but I think if anyone has any questions about anything you should look it up or call the respective office. My friend that is at Houston and one thing that bugged her was that she felt they assumed you knew a lot of stuff or that you would look it up yourself as opposed to them telling you, which left several people behind/not in the know about different things. She wasn't talking specifically about fin aid but from talking to her it seems like it is best to just ask the question rather than wait for an answer. I think we should be able to wait for things and they should have us totally prepared, and there really isn't any way we should know the fin aid system, but I think we really need to ask. I just want everyone to be as prepared as possible so we're all on the same page 🙂

Yeah, I agree. Proactivity always beats reactivity.

so everyone getting pumped up for welcome weekend??? We should have an SDN get together on Friday night!

You don't have to purchase the computer before your tuition and housing loans go through. Buy whenever you want, then submit your receipts. Fin aid then looks them over, makes sure you match specs, and increases your loans accordingly. They mail you updated loan paperwork, you agree to the increase, then they finally deposit the money. All together it takes 2-4 weeks.

Someone else's comment about needing to mine for info is somwhat true. However, the second year (big brother/sister basically) can be your point person for much of it. Just make sure that you send back the second year form early so that you can get assigned and correspond with her/him.

Hope this helps!

I quickly skimmed through our packet and didn't notice the March 15 deadline for the big brother thing. Do you think it is too late to send the form in?

The girl that told me about it will hopefully be my M2 buddy 🙂 I'm really excited! I hope to start a long line of excellent m2 buddies. 🙂

Well it said to send it in along with the Welcome Weekend Registration form and that was due on March 15th. But no, I don't think it's too late to send it in. I'm sure they'll still accept it.

Don't worry; just send it in now. There are representatives from my class who assign people. I don't think they're started doing so yet, so you should be fine.

I'm sure a number of you are on the UTSW waitlist and I was wondering what your thoughts on UTSW versus UT-H are. I loved the atmosphere at UT-H and the people seem down to earth and like you could actuallly make friends there which is something I want. But UTSW has the name...
