Does anyone know what the waitlist situation is at UT? I would think that it would have a great deal of movement.
 
Best of luck everyone. Please post any updates as they become available so the rest of us can have some hope. Here's some info you may or may not know: typically, about 1/3 of the UTHSC class comes off the waitlist. So if you get waitlisted, you've still got hope!
 
I'm sure it won't help you feel better now, but this has been the most competitive application pool at Ut in years. So, if you don't get in right away, don't feel too bad about yourself. Also, if you get in, more power to you. Since the application pool is so good, I wouldn't be suprised if the waitlist moves a lot this year. Good luck everyone, and keep us posted!!
 
For those of you wondering...no I didn't get anything in the mail today....I know they sent a ton out on Friday. I guess East Tennessee is a little slow in getting mail cause I know some others have heard already this weekend.

Though, I swear I yelled at least twice at my mail person cause they delivered my mail late today. 🙂 Too bad they are never around to hear me. 😀

I talked to Diane today. As already mentioned, decisions were made last Friday, March 26th.

Letters were mailed out today, March 30. I have been on the "we are undecided" list since November so I understand some of your agony. Good luck everyone!!!!!!
 
I have been readin here for about a week or so and finally decided to post.

I too interviewed at the beginning of Nov. and have been in the "No Final Decision" group ever since. I should've known when I had a psychiatrist interview me and it started off with... "OK, so tell me about yourself, starting with where you grew up (i.e. your childhood)" haha. Oh well....

Also, I thought letters were mailed out on Friday?? I wonder if different people were mailed out on different days or maybe different groups (accept/reject/WL)?? I hope I don't have to wait till like friday if letters were sent today.

TN Aaron, I know you I think. I'm friends with that goofy kid with the big fro that thinks he's so smart (haha j/k).
 
Yeah so I went ahead and called Diane....she said she's mailing them right now (2:30).....so I hope that isn't a bad sign..... I any of you guys get your acceptance notices today or tom., be sure to post so I can be really pissed off. Thanks.

I heard the stats of currently accepted students average 30 MCAT and 3.7gpa this year. Not too shabby!!

I should probably update my profile. I tended bar at Kalamata Kitchens in Knoxville for a couple of years, then up in Connecticut at a Ruby Tuesdays for awhile. But, my wife and I just moved to Memphis (I start in August--YIPPITYDOO!), so I had to start at a new restaurant.

At my new place (J Alexander's), you have to wait tables until you build up enough seniority to get behind the bar.

So now I'm just a lowly waiter.😡

funkless - well, J. Alexander's is a great place to wait tables from what I hear...good tips. I worked at Houston's for awhile here in Memphis. They were a little militant.

MUAHHAHAHHA. I just have to laugh. I called last Wednesday and she told me everything was already done and will be mailed out on last Friday. I just love hearing different things from different people, but I really like Dianne and Nelson so all I can do is laugh.

Maybe last Friday's meeting was for the "hold" list. I dunno. All I do know is that I have been watching my mail like a hawk and I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I'll post when I know for sure.
 
I've had so much nervous energy this past week or 2. I've been randomly waking up like an hour before I usually do and I've been compulsively checking SDN for any new posts....
Also, to expell some of this energy I've been working out and running an insane amount. I guess if I get waitlisted I'm gonna be in the best shape of my life. Anyways you guys post back about acceptances and feed my growing addiction....
 
Waitlisted.

The letter was dated March 30 and got to me today (31st). I live in Memphis so it only took a day for delivery.

Unfortunately, I have to wait even longer! Good luck to everyone.

November 19th.

I have good recs, experience, 30 on the MCAT, but I think my grades are an issue.
 
I guess Knoxville will hear tomorrow then if Memphis heard today.

I'll be at the bars tomorrow night no matter what.

Sewanneegrad, call Nelson in a few days and ask him where you sit on the waitlist. It usually moves pretty deep at UT. Anyway, good luck.

I guess being an "alternate" is a waitlist.

Whew.....I thought I may actually have less stress as the summer approaches. Guess not. Silly me.

Now of course this opens a whole realm of questions and ponderings as the information in the letter was vauge at best.

You know fun questions like...where is my rank...how many are ranked...how typical has movement been the last few years, are bribes accepted (kidding 🙂), and other fun questions every applicant thinks as they approach May 15th and the summer.
 
Hey all...

I just wanted to let all of those who have been waitlisted not to despair. Just be persistent and positive. Keep in touch with Diane (email is best I think for her), write updates to Nelson Strother and overall always be kind and optimistic when you speak with the school. I do believe that attitude makes a difference. Last year I estimate 40- 50 students were accepted off of the waitlist. I only learned at the very end that I was very close to being accepted, but nothing is ever for sure. The year before (2002) I learned that 80 + students had been taken in off of the waitlist. So, it most certainly varies from year to year. If UT conforms to last's years policy, they will not disclose your official rank, but you can inquire as to your position in say upper tier, mid tier etc. Also, make sure to speak directly with Nelson Strother and inquire as to whether there is anything you could be doing right now or over the summer to improve your chances.

Now I have to bug Nelson and Diane for a whole summer too. I think I'm gonna go stuff myself at myabi's then drink all night. This sucks.

I guess I would like to see HOW MANY people we waitlisted. Then I would have a great appriciation of 40 or 80 people taken. I would think that 80 people is tops.
 
I called Diane and added my cell phone number to their database in case they needed it. Might not be a bad idea for you guys to do that also.

I guess I am gonna treat this like I didn't get in and start studying for the MCAT. I do need to call Nelson and see what I should do next year for reapplication also. Has anyone else done this?

Good luck to all of you who are waitlisted. I was in your shoes last year at this time. In my waitlist letter it mentioned how I might improve my application if I decided to reapply. Did they mention anything in your letters? I had a real tough decision because I had been accepted to another school, out-of-state. I really wanted to go to UT so I talked to Nelson and followed his advice. I interviewed Dec. 10th and got my acceptance letter Dec. 19th. So, if any of you are worried about not getting in and having to reapply I feel for you. However know that those that follow the advice of the adcom and reapply have an exponentially greater shot at it next time. Nelson told me that only a hand full of thost that were wled in 2002 did not get in in 2003. I am happy to answer any questions you wlers might have.👍
 
Oh yeah, forgot to write that you guys should try Wasabi also. It is very good. No better than Miyabi but the atmosphere is better. Party on.

Thanks. This is not the first time I heard of something getting written in a alternate letter. I have heard of a couple of people saying their MCAT scores were menchioned or something else. My letter just pretty much states their criteria and is a congradulatory type of letter saying as they drop off accepted people not attending, they take more people from the alternate list. No suggestions. At all. There is a section saying if I am not pulled off the list then I can reapply but nothing on any specifics. I read it as your good enough...just not the top 150-180 we already offered.
 
My letter had a paragraph in bold type halfway down the page indicating I should consider taking graduate level biology courses. I talked to Nelson on Friday and he said those paragraphs are tailored to each individual student. Granted, they are still broad, but some may indicate MCAT, others experience, additional courses, etc.

As some of you have have already recommended, everyone on the wait list should talk to Nelson. When I called on Friday, he told me I was in the top 1/3 of the wait list. I did not get my rank, nor did I find out how long the list is, but he indicated I should be fine if they take the approx. 40 people mentioned in the letter. Of course, he follows that up with saying that each year is different and there is no way to predict what will happen each year. Their best gauge is a multi-year average.

If you have any other questions let me know. Also, I am from Memphis, left for Sewanee, and came back to Mem after graduating. If you have questions, let me know. I have lived on Harbor Town (downtown), in Midtown, out East, etc. I will be more than happy to answer any questions/misconceptions some of you out-of-towners (or in-towners) may have.

Good luck to you. I really hope that you and everyone else who has been waitlisted will get in. I was also advised to take some upper level/ graduate bio. courses should I not make it in from the waitlist. So after last summer I enrolled in two courses for the fall and two again this spring. I can honestly say that I think I will be much more prepared having taken those classes. Not to say that I would not have wanted to start last year, but I definitely feel like this transition will be a bit easier for me because I took additional coursework (Pathophysiology & Immunology). (Please note that I was an English major, Pre-Med minor, so it may not be the case for the rest of you.) But Mr. Strother and Ms. Harris were wonderful and extremely helpful. Do not hesitate to ask very straightforward questions when talking about your strategy with Mr. Strother. He will give you an honest, direct answer. I wrote a letter of intent after learning I had been waitlisted, but to tell you the truth, I cannot be certain if if had an impact on my status or not.

If your in the top 1/3rd your probably sitting in the fabled cat bird seat:laugh:. I would still make plans to attend grad school of retake the MCAT and would not hurt to do some extra volunteering. As someone else mentioned here the admitted folks right now have pretty high numbers so maybe that means that they are sitting on some private school waitlists. Either way there should a good amount of movement from May 15th to mid June. Go Griz!👍

I would agree with Mison that you are probably in good standing, but I would advise against starting a grad. school program if you do not get in this year. I went over and over this and talked about it with Mr. Strother at length. If you only need a few extra courses (even grad. level), you can enroll as a non-degree seeking grad. student. (I did this at TSU in Nashville.) If you start an actual grad. degree program, most schools require you to complete it before matriculating into med. school. I knew ultimately that I was not interested in a grad. field even as a backup career, so unless you are really sure that you would pursue a grad. science field should you not ultimately get in, I would just take the courses. I read tons of posts about this last year, and there is a wide range of views, so please understand this is just how I made my decision. Take care!
 
Thanks guys. I am not going to enter a grad program, although I may consider taking classes as a non-degree seeking student. You are right in that many schools frown upon not completing a grad degree. Also, i don't want a career in the sciences outside of being a medical doctor.
 
I probably should have elaborated a little when I wrote "grad" school. I meant exactly what Irishrose wrote, non-degree status student. This is what I did at the U of M. Took some really great classes. Sewaneegrad since your in Memphis you might want to look into it. Dr. Koons, the Histology professor, is a cool dude. I agree 100% that you should not get into a degree seeking program unless you want to use that degree in research, public health, business, etc.
 
I talked to Nelson today and he said that the waitlist is 132 people. I didn't ask him where I stood in that number. He told me I didn't have to take the MCAT again, but I am going to anyways. I am a BME though so they recommended some upper level science classes. I'll probably take Biochem and Micro or Physiology.

I assumed the wait-list was near 100.

Tell me about it. Now that I have heard how many are on the list I have slim to no chance of getting in...and slim just left town. I didn't have the guts to ask him what third I was in. I just don't want to know.

So I'll retake the MCAT, take a couple of classes, and reapply next year.
 
I have just officially joined the "waitlisted" club. 🙁 Well, I guess it's better than a rejection.
