UT Memphis for Fall 2004

As for as curriculum goes, the only thing I know of Memphis is that they have condensed the first 2 years of classwork down to about 1.7 years. You take a 4 week block of courses and then have a finals week (during which you take exams on computer at a time you choose) and then you take a clinical week (some sort of preceptorship). After that you continue with this repeating 6 week schedule. The first year students actually begin 2nd year courses around April (which is earlier, to my knowledge, than any other school). This allows for more time to study for the USMLE1. Memphis (to my knowledge) has been going through this curriculum change for a couple of years now. I think it would be an ideal school for anyone, traditional or non. I also know of non-traditional applicants getting accepted. Hope that helps...

Actually, I've heard they are going to change the curriculum once again by giving tests every two weeks. While the clinical years are its strength, the curriculum and the first two years appears to be the weakness at UT and is probably the reason why people choose privates instead. Also, they changed the curriculum for the 2 years into 1.7 years not to give extra time for studying for the USMLE1 (i.e. gotta take it before May), rather it's to give extra time for rotations in clinical years. Hope this helps.

I really enjoy the information I'm getting from this forum.Someone mentioned that we will have tests every two weeks as M1 and M2. It seems like pretty tight schedule. Does anyone know what the average Step 1 score is for UT as compared to national average? Also, what's the atmosphere like in the classrooms? Are students mostly cooperative?

from my experience...many of my friends are UT students, there is a great deal of cammeraderie. I'm sure there are a few gunners, but the spirit is generally a very good one.

I am so excited to see so many folks interested in UT- Memphis. I cannot say enough great things about it. I think that the curriculum changes have been challenging for students on the front end, but I really like the idea of having more time to focus on choosing the area of medicine you will be in for (most MDs) the rest of your career!

Have any of you all on the waitlist heard anything yet? I wish you all the very best.
I kept an eye on the accepted page posted by UT almost everyday looking to see how many new names were added. This is the link:

but it seems that it has not been updated just yet.

Take care & hope everyone has a great weekend!

Wow...every two weeks. I'm going to LOVE that!

Dear All,
Thank you all for the valuable information that you provided about the school. I really appreciate it.
Just for information, I'm currently getting a PhD in molecular biology/biomedical sciences, that's why I'm especially interested in academic medicine and research.

Hey Everyone,

I'm now an M1 (or M2) at UT. I just wanted to share some more info in regard to the curriculum. M1 year is divided into 5 4-week blocks running from August through March. During the first 3, the courses are Anatomy (including embryo), Physiology (including histo), and Molecular Basis of Disease (combination of cell bio, genetics, and biochem). Blocks 4 & 5 are physio and MBOD only. After each block is one week of PCC/DRS, which is basically your community preceptorship + other things such as epidemiology, nutrition, etc.

As was mentioned previously, the M2 curriculum has recently been changed due to the opinions of the class of '06. Instead of the block format a la M1, we now have an integrated exam every two weeks with a cumulative mid-term in Oct. and a final in Mar. As I understand it, the new format is designed to prevent the all too common memorize, regurgitate, forget cycle and thus is supposed to provide better board preparation. The first two-week exam was met with, at best, mixed reviews. Although most believe the change is for the better, there are still problems (mostly logistical) to be addressed.

Someone asked about our average board scores, and historically UT has done fairly well. Average for the class of '05 was 214 (national average was 216). While this is slightly below average, consider that our MCAT average for matriculants is around 28 and national matriculant average is 30. While they're obviously two different tests, one could argue that generally speaking UT gains ground on the ave. during the first two years. Bear in mind that the M1/M2 curriculum was reorganized for the class of '06, who just took their boards.

I'd like to congratulate all of you who will be coming to UT-M this fall and encourage anyone who is undecided to visit the campus and see the tremendous clinical opportunities you will be exposed to in 3rd & 4th years. If you're still up in the air after that, another comparison of tuitions might be in order.

Feel free to ask me about anything else that comes to mind.

Matt

Haven't heard from the waitlist.......Still hoping!!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!

this is last year's, no?

Yes Asclepius... it is the list from last year, but it was about this time last year when they began posting the acceptance list, so I figured it would be updated soon. Otherwise, if anyone is curious, take a look around the UT website in case they change the URL.

Is anyone interested in getting together somewhere in Memphis for a "meet & greet" Sat. evening May 15th? PM me if so.

Hope you all waiting hear some good news soon!

Thanks to Hank Kingsley for the information. Are the bi-monthly exams only for M-2s or do the M-1s have the same set-up?

I just wanted to wish everyone luck with the waiting list. I was accepted off the list last year and deferred to this year. That was my second year on the waiting list and I finally made it. All I can say is if you don't make it this year, please be persistant. I almost gave up and started looking for other career choices. See everyone in August!

hey, Egghead, welcome to SDN. ...look forward to meeting you in August. When are you moving to Memphis, or are you there already?

edit: Dang, I'll be coming to you if I need help with any chemistry questions. How did you like Sewannee? I almost went there; ended up at Trinity University, a rival of Sewannee's instead. The University of the South has one of the prettiest campuses I've ever been on.

Asclepius, I'll be heading to Memphis a few weeks before orientation. I can't wait to meet everyone. I'm taking a quick trip down end of this month to find an apartment for me and my wife. Don't run to quick for help...Haven't done any real chemistry in a while. Organic was my worst undergrad grade... See everyone soon!

good...it sounds like you will be a little bit of an "older" pre-med like me. I'm not too far off from 30...married too. Good luck finding an appartment. You might also try looking for guest houses in Central Gardens, Hein Park and other nice neighborhoods in midtown.

I met with a financial advisor today; he was recommended by UT and really knows his stuff about the money game in medical education and the medical profession. Here's the great thing...he helps UT medical students for free. Of course, he's trying to build a reputation with you so that you'll continue business with him after graduation and residency, etc.

PM me if you would like his contanct info. He's located in Memphis.

Hey Asclepius I would love to have the name of the FA you met with. I have been thinking about meeting with one for awhile. So he was really helpful? I am struggling with how much loan money to accept and how I should pay for out of my own pocket. I guess these are the kinds of things he is helpful with, eh?

Hope everyone is doing well... Just wanted to see if anyone esle was interested in having a get together/ "meet & greet" in Memphis on Sat. night May 15th. Time & place are still TBA. PM me if you would like to come out to meet fellow students.
Also, have any of you folks on the waitlist received any good news?
I have my fingers crossed for you all!! Best Wishes & a bit o' good luck!! :luck:

I have some more suggestions for meeting places for the 15th. I was thinking that we should try thr Cooper-Young area. It's a small, artsy part of town you may not be familiar with, and they have some great restaurants - The Beaty Shop and Cafe 1912 are some of the hottest places to eat in Memphis right now. Cafe Ole is down there too, and they have a nice patio to sit out on...Cafe Ole isn't that bad. I would need to check prices on Beauty Shop and 1912.

Sounds really yummy & relaxing.... Maybe we ought to do it this weekend... just kidding.. but it would be really nice to meet more students!

I like the student friendly prices too! So, let's call it a date & if anyone wants to come how about if we meet up around 6:30 (that way we can still catch a bit of sunshine on the patio!).

Hello everyone, I regret that I can't make it on the 15th, but maybe we can do it again sometime this Summer. I was over in the Cooper-Young area this past Sunday and we ate at the Glass Onion. It was great. Great menu and bar, but best of all is the large patio in the front right on Cooper (or is it Young?). Prices are pretty reasonable too, y'all might want to check it out.

Sounds great. Cafe Ole it is! And, if I can get my house in shape, we'll have another event there sometime this summer.

If you are in town this weekend, this might be something worth checking out:

OK...so I'm starting to monopolize this thread, sorry guys. My wife, who works at the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, sent me a list of some websites she thought might be of use to anyone who's interested in Memphis. I think some may have been posted previously here. I haven't viewed them myself yet.

1) MATA (for purchasing trolley passes an such): http://www.matatransit.com/

5) Memphis in May Website: http://www.memphisinmay.org/home.asp

While margaritas on the patio at Cafe Ole kick ass, Barbecue Fest is that same night. If you guys know someone with a tent, I highly recommend checking that out. Lots of good food and muchos cerveza. Just think about it.

IrishRose - just dropped by the forums randomly...just wanted to say CONGRATS! good luck next year at Memphis.
(by the way...when did you take your postbacc classes at TSU? i did the same thing a year ago...)
Best of luck to the wait-listees. When I interviewed at UT last year, I stayed with a student that got off the waitlist two days before orientation. And if you have any questions about Quillen (or their waitlist...or UT's waitlist...or Meharry's waitlist... 😉 - feel free to PM me.

Hey Manta,

Thanks very much. I am very excited to say the least!! Where did you end up going?
Hope all is well!!

I'm def. up for that, but we have a vegetarian in the group. I don't know anyone with a tent that I'd mind asking if a bunch of people could come over. Anybody else know someone with a BBQ fest tent?

just bumpin" to advertise for the event this weekend. Can we get a show of hands? It looks like it will be me, Irish Rose, and Kim...anyone else? I know a bunch of students from the U of M who will be going to UT. I can send a letter out to all of them...I just didn't want to end up with a group of 20 and not be able to get a table if a bunch of SDNers were coming as well.

if any of you are knoxvillians me and robz are going to try and do a monday night alcohol night at Barleys if anyone is down (not tonight but next week). You cant beat 2 dollar microbrews with a stick.

Beer is gooooood.

Asclepius,

Please spread the word to any other future UT students that you know. The more, the merrier I say!! I am very excited to meet some future schoolmates!!! I think this will be a wonderful trip!! YEAH!!!! And now that our $)#*()* immunology final is over, Kim & I can kick back & celebrate!! WHOHOOO!

I will be there! Cafe Ole is great...I live two minutes from there. It has an ideal patio for hanging out, drinking margaritas, etc.

Regarding BBQ fest, I am going on Thursday and Friday, but won't be making it on Saturday. If anyone is going Friday, let me know and I will try to find out (and let you know) what tent I will be partying at.

This is so cool that we will all get to meet.... I am really getting excited about school!! I feel like a little kid... gotta go out & buy a new backpack!!

You guys in Knoville feel like a roadtrip? It might be expensive given gas prices, but if not, we'll all meet soon enough.

Okay...I'll spread the word around. We may have to wait awhile to get a table if we have a huge crowd...not aproblem, though, they have good margaritas...even if I won't be able to have any...well, maybe one.

I guess we can seek each other out...it'll be kinda like ~8 simultaneous blind dates.

I'm looking forward to it.

By the way, a friend and upcoming UT M1 said she got a $300 discount at The Bristol on Union when she said that she was a UT student. She made it sound like that was a $300 per month discount, but that would be huge. The 1 br appartments are regularly about $860 something, but her's was reduced to about $560. They're brand new and right next to the University hospital.

I'll be on call that night, so I could wear OR scrubs since I would have to keep them in the car and change into them if I were called anyway. Look for me...the moderately tall guy with brown spikey hair in OR scrubs. If I'm not there...well, I'll be on a case and will hopefully get to catch up with you later.

Well as far as descriptions go, Kim and Stephanie & I all pretty much favor the girls from the Swedish Bikini Team. HaHa! No, really... Kim & I both have med. length brown hair and Stephanie is blonde. Kim & I are mid/later 20's & Stephanie is early 20's.

This should be a lot of fun. Please, for those of you with spouses, feel free to include them too if they can make it.

Thank you for the information on the Bristol. We'll have to take a look!

Hope everyone has a great day!

I figured if medicine didn't work out, I could try out for Saturday Night Live. I am a lot like the Chandler character from friends... ok.. except I am female, but I joke a whole lot when I get nervous!! Got to try to find another outlet before I head into the hospital. I doubt may GSW patients will find it funny that they have been shot!

kim. said:
Kerry, we'll find you a new outlet this summer! How about crocheting or something easy?

Patient: "Oh my god! he shot me! Am I gonna die, doc?!?! Oh it hurts!"

Kerry: "It's okay, I'm knitting you a tourniquet."

 Ok, maybe we need to rethink the summer hobby!

So, Asclepius, what's your name anyway? Or do you want us to address you as Mr.Asclepius? 😛

I'd be a cross between Florence Nightingale and Martha Stewart... I don't know, that seems kind of scary... I do love to knit though...

You'll find out Saturday...or ask Kerry...I've mentioned it to her in a PM. I'd rather it not be used openly here so I can have at least some degree of anonymity.

menemotxi...hardy har har...😉 yes, my name is pretty noble. I usually go by a shorter version though. Anyway, why don't you go find an Emory thread, traitor! 😡 😉

Screw memphis, come to monday night beer night in k-town... Come on guys, 2 dollar beers is worth the 8 hour drive right?

Somebody's been working at the Med.

So, who's going to call and make reservations? (Do they take reservations?) I suppose I could, since I'm already in town... I'll make them under the name "UT students" in case I get called on a tissue bank case and am unable to show up.

Okay? okay...any spouses/significant others/seeing eye dogs that we haven't counted yet? I'm thinking about 7 or eight spots...I have yet to hear back from some U of M people.

toodles

Just wanted to let you guys who were wondering that the waitlist is moving!!! I didn't hesitate to commit to UT and can't wait to meet you guys come August.
