Utah AZCOM'ers for 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wish I knew!! I wonder what additions were made to the new Atlas. Doubtful there are that many additions...but there could be. The first will probably be fine, and if you had to, I am sure other editions will be available to you.

shoot!!! maximus- i wanted to be the 100th post on this one!! 🙂

I don't think there's any difference in content, but they teach out of the 2nd edition, and the plates aren't numbered exactly the same (they're in the same general area in the book, though).

For the record, I had (and still have) the first edition, and it wasn't that much of a hassle.

I hope everyone is well. It sounded like everyone had a good time at the get together...sorry I missed it. Instead I have been hiding out in Eugene wrecking my knee. Long story. Anyway, jhug, did I read that you are going to Chile this summer? I am extremely jealous. I think one of my goals will be to get to Latin or South America next summer, but my spanish is muy crapy. AZCOM offers a medical spanish course don't they? Anyway, anybody else have any interesting summer plans? I am trying to decide what type of road trip to take before settling down in AZ.
Take care all 😀

I claim the 100th post!!! WOW! I would give it to you, jhug...but alas, I cannot delete my post.

I am thinking that maybe a cruise would be a nice get away before school. That or a week on the beach... 😎

I am currently looking into some trips, throw out any ideas, we need to do a road trip to AZ soon. I will look into a cruise before we dedicate our lives to the books. It will be a needed thing!
😎

Meg and i would love to do a road trip down-- i'm stuck in chile  during the month of may-- i haven't looked but i've heard that cruises are super cheap right now with the economy/travel woes.

Yea...htere definately has to ba a TROPICAL road trip. This weather is just too cold for my liking. Cold is only nice when you are on the slopes!

CRUISE!!!! That would be nice!!!

Are you all playing with my mind, or are we seriously talking about an AZCOMers cruise here?! Hil and I had talked about going on a cruise to relax before the shackles of medical school fall upon us. We already have two road trips planned for June and July to SoCal...and a nice tropical cruise would top it all off. Oh, yeah, baby...I hope you guys are serious about this, because WE ARE IN! 😎 ! 😎 ! 😎 !
It's so cold right now in Sandy. We've got to get out of this fridge pit.
Cozumel...Bahamas...Panama...Jamaica...St. Thomas...the possibilities are endless!

P.S. to Hawk: I was grossly misinformed on the price of new Vespas. The 50cc models msrp at $3000 (68mpg!), and the 150cc models msrp at $4000. Still, at these prices, I'm investigating the used market.

ya know, i've always wanted to do a disney cruise-- mickey, pluto, goofy 😀 i'm not super sure meg and i could afford one with the baby so close, plus she'll be great with child-- but take lots of pics!! We are really thinking about going to az one more time before school starts though.

My wife and I are going back one more time too. We have to square away where we are going to live. Is anyone else absolutely decided on their living arrangements? Just wondering.

HEY HAWK!!! Guess what I am???? YEP...50 and now a SENIOR MEMBER!!!

Maximus-- you have made us all very, very proud!! This is one of the accomplishments that we all need to enjoy!

I am working on the senior membership status, but work has been busy of late, so I don't have time to post frivolous posts ie- Maximus. But I definately want to look into cruises. Every do some research look for the personal hook ups that all of us have and we will see what the best deal we can come up with.
DaddyD, that makes my heart somewhat lighter to hear vespas are not as expensive as you originally thought. Even though it is still a little high it means that the used market won't be as high as I was thinking. I need to look into it when I have time.
Everyone post your cruise stats on the board.

One thing I forgot to ask, has everyone tried to complete the school's app for financial aid? I was working on it and it took me to the stafford loan page for fannie Mae or whatever, but I could not put my informatin in as the box for where you put your state code in was to small(it was messed up) and so I could not submit it. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just my computer. I have the internet explorer 6.01, so that is totally updated. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hawk-- i have not tried yet to fill that stuff out. I'm thoughly impressed that you are so on the ball!!! So is anyone else working for the olympics?? i've been assigned to be the dedicated assistant/slave for the ioc member from peru. I got a brand spankin new trailblazer, cc for gas & cell phone-- so i shouldn't complain🙂 It'll be crowded but fun none-the-less.

It was so cold and the line was huge. It went around the center and down in front of your house. It was a awesome show though. I was thoroughly impressed. I just don't know how those people are going to enjoy the concerts with as cold as it has been. I will be watching from home and dreaming of AZ weather. Have fun with the car, maybe doing some digging with it. Enjoy peru.

Nice to see our little topic getting some use once again. I agree with Hawk...I have had my fill. The city looks really nice, though. Hopefully everyone will enjoy themselves and spend lots of money so the 2.4 billion dollars spent on the Olympics will get paid for. TOO MUCH MONEY!!!!

You guys all getting excited?? I am. it will be nice to move along and get started.

I don't mean to be overly presumptuous, but I have been following your threads (especially the comments on Vespas) and cannot help wondering if any of you served a mission to Taiwan. The reason I ask is that I did and one of me companions and I had a running joke about the Vespas. Anyway, just curious.

I know that it is assuming a lot, based only on some of the things stated on here and the fact you guys are currently in UT. I apologize if I have offended anyone.

Ben•••••Not at all, no offense taken. I happened to have served in Southern California. Maximus served in Portugal and I am not sure about the others. And about the vespas, it is just a little dream I have. I know I can't afford the 1800 cc 2002 shadow, but the vespa is just a little possible realization of a larger dream, plus they get dang good gas mileage, and heck(hehe) we will be in AZ where you can drive them most of the year. I don't know, just something to spice up med school life I guess. Its all good.

Ben,
I also did not serve in Taiwan, however I was a stone's throw across the bay in Hong Kong and Macau. There were so many scooters, Vespas included, on the streets of Macau. Scooters outnumbered cars probably 5 to 1. They would all line up side by side waiting for the light to turn green - then it was Daytona 500, baby. Asian scooter riders are insane.

Hawk,
you are approaching Senior Member status. This is a monumental occasion, one which I look forward to in the far future. Perhaps you, Maximus, and jhug can place the letters S.M. after your names. Oh how prestigious! Then, when Maximus is granted his DO, he can be Maximus, DO, SM. Now THAT is status! 😀

I don't know about the Vespas, boys. I think I'd want something that wouldn't get run down on the streets and something that I didn't have to ride in the bike lane or on the shoulder 🙂 That's just me though.

What an idea, Daddy D!! Ain't nothing like a little alphabet soup...

MAXIMUS, DO, SM, MAN

Hey everyone, I couln't remember when everyone is going to go down to look for apartments. If you would let me know. Maximus has located some pretty good ones that we are going to check out when we go down, so if you need some ideas just let us know. Most are on the internet, but seem to be a bit more reasonable then the ones that are across the street, though those are very nice. I just wanted to find out when everyone is going and if anyone will be going at the same time. It looks like early march the we will be taking a trip. I would like to get all the applications we need and the deals that we can get so we can get on a waiting list if needed. Well everyone take care and maybe we can get together again some time. 😀

HA!!

Hawk,
Brooke and I are going down the last weekend in March, the 27th - 30th to look for some places. We found some okay places on the net,but we want to check them out first.

Oh, I forgot, it doesn't seem like a lot of the places down there have waiting lists like here. My wife called down to check on one because there was not much info on the web and they're like "waiting list??!" So just FYI

Posse,
Hil and I aren't going down until mid-april, so if you all will do the dirty work for us and find the nicest place for the best deal, that would suit us just fine!

DaddyD, DO, M, STUD

I can't wait until we're all nice and tan like this dude 😎

just thought i'd fill you all in on my olympic events.... saw the U.S. halfpipe sweep, world record in speed skating, pairs finals-- canada was robbed!!!, luge finals, 90 m ski jump finals, met prince albert of monaco, jaun claude kiley-(famous french skier), the U.S. bobsled and hockey teams, vp for coca-cola(she invited me to a vip party tomorrow), & got a $150 parking ticket. And it's only day 4!!!! hope everyone else is doing well! megs and i are up for a late march/mid april trip to az also-- she's in hawaii right now! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I'm so jealous. I love the Olympics. Maybe I will make the trip next time they are in the US

JHUG, did I say that I was jealous! That would be awesome to go to so many olympic events. I was ablt to go to the bobsleigh event and that was really cool. It is fun to be around the venues and all the different cultures. Since you have been around everything, what would you suggest would be the most worth while things to check out. I would like to take my family up and look around at the different sites. Any suggestions? Thanks.

DaddyD, I forgot to add in my last post that I have been checking out some prices on scooters, hehe, I found that new hondas only cost around $2300 retail and I might even be able to get them close to cost, so things are looking somewhat better. And I also have been looking into cruises and I think I have found a deal for 5 day cruises for a good price, I will get back with details to anyone who wants to know. Take it easy everyone.

Wow am I tired today!

I got up at 7:00am and drove to Phoenix. I left at 8 and got to Glendale around 10:30ish. Then I looked at apartments until 5:30 (24 complexes!) and drove back home. I got home at 7:30. That is a very long day of driving!!! I wonder why it takes so much out of you...

Anyway, in a few weeks I will know for sure if I'll be at AZCOM, and now I don't have to scramble around looking for a decent apartment at the last minute. I have a little dog, so it makes it a little complicated

kadyra,

That does sound like a long day. Nothing is worse than a long drive after an exhausting day. Well, did you find anything good. Everybody has been talking about housing but you seem to be the first to get active. Well, what's the scoop?

I hope all are doing well. I am doing good, trying to play and work as much as I can. However, I seemed to be consumed with trying to get ready with this summer and next year. I really try not think about it but everything I do revolves around it. From applying for F.A. and scholarships to planning my summer trip to thinking about things I will need in the fall. Anyway, I had a small monkey wrench thrown into the middle yesterday when I visited my local orthopod. Seems I am missing a crucial structure in my knee, it's not so much missing--just not there in one piece. Yes I thought I would throw a little ACL reconstruction into my spring schedule....what the heck. Has anyone had this done? What is the typical recovery. I was told 2 weeks crutches, no impact activities for 10 weeks and by 6 months it should be 75% recovered and full recovery within 1 year. I wonder what I can do.
I was supposed to meet my parents in AZ. and meet with a realtor in late March but I have decided to cancel and just have them send me pictures. I will just have to wait until July when I get there myself.

See yas

Hey, Sport,
You know I think a lot of it depends on how good your ortho is and how aggressive your PT is. I've seen people with a lot of ROM after just a couple of weeks, and then there are some who are on crutches for a few weeks. If you work hard at it you could well over 75% after six months. Good Luck, man.

Sport that's terrible about your knee! I've dislocated my kneecap twice and torn my MCL along with it. I've managed to neevr have surgery. although my orthopod has threatened me with it a couple times because I have such terrible patellar tendonitis now. But how long the recovery is also depends a lot on you. How fast you heal, how motivated you are with the pt, etc. I am lazy about pt, so it takes me a long time to heal whenever my knee gets stupid.

OK I can give you some tips about housing if you like. I did searches for a 5 mile radius from AZCOM's address on rent.net and forrent.com as well as putting down the stuff on azcomstudents.org. I also needed places that took pets. I can tell you a few places to definitely stay away from (they looked extremely run down despite the nice places around them). Meadow Glen and Union Hills Estates impressed me so much with their ickiness that I didn't even get out of my car. I just turned around and drove onto my next place on my list. They are located right next to each other. I would suggest investing in a Phoenix road atlas. I used one all day yesterday and I didn't get lost once. I only had to ask which was north was one time, too. If you have a dog, I can also give you a list of places that only accept cats or have weight restrictions under 20 pounds. So if anyone has questions about certain places, I can e-mail you privately about the criteria I used in judging the places and all that.

Bitter Sweet News!!!!!!!!!!
actually i should say sweet bitter because it is better good news than bad???- did that make sense?? 😕 Anyway, meg and i are having TRIPLETS!!!! count em- one, two, three!!   I am so super excited that it makes me sick-- of course the idea of three lil babes doesn't help either! This has thrown us in for a whirl and that is where the bitter comes in-- with the c-section and three lil ones i'm thinking i will have to defer for a year and start up when the gang is a little bit older and "easier"-- i don't see how triplets could ever be easy  What is all your imput-- to defer or not to defer??? i really think for the good of the fam it is a must-- but i'm open for suggestions. Also, has anyone heard/learned about the defering thing??? I have been so stinking busy these last few weeks that i have not had time to call the school. As far as must-see stuff for the olympics-- the medals plaza is neat-- and all the stuff around the delta center- it gets really crazy around 4pm-11pm so if you do want to come try and do it around mid-day on a weekday and it shouldn't be too bad.

WOW! Triplets! Good luck with that jhug. One baby is tough but three at once! Wow! I don't know what advice to give you because I am decades away from having that sort of decision to make. But if you do decide to defer, I would hope that AZCOM would think your reason was good enough. If they didn't, I would seriously question a lot of the they tell their prospective students. They did seem to be pretty family oriented abd supportive of family issues.

Jhug,

congrats my man, three times over. I think I will have to repeat kadyra, WOW! I could not imagine the absolute fun your going to have. As far as deffering I think it should be fairly easy with a good reason and I think this definitely sounds like a good enough reason. The other option is military school, even then I think you have to wait until they're three or four months old....just kidding. I am wishing yua all the best. 🙂

Congrats jhug! I don't know anything about deferring acceptances......I just wanted to wish you luck and say congratulations......times three!!!!

WOW!!! That is so cool!!! CONGRATS! I hope everything works out for you guys. Just keep us informed as to your decision on school. I wish you guys luck!!

MAXIMUS

JHug, that is such an awesome thing. Congrats three times over. I don't know if anything I say will help, but my sister just had twins and they have been busy, so I definately can't imagine having three at once, but they also already had three kids. If you didn't defer you will be very busy, with a lot of sleep gone, I would have to say that if you won't have any family close it will be very hard for your wife, there will always be a few other people, like my wife who could help out and maybe DaddyD's wife, but it all depends on your wife. Her sanity is more important, more important than going to school this fall. It is a hard decision, but an amazing one just the same. Let me know if you guys need anything or if there is anything we can do to help. Best of luck to you.

you are all so great!!! i have been so stinking busy with the olympics that i haven't been able to call the school and talk with them-- i am next to positive that i am going to defer this year and catch up to you all next year- who knows, maybe one of you will be my mentor  Thank you again for all the encouragement and support!

Hello future AZCOMers. I'm first year there and we will all be excited with the arrival of your class. Just finished finals for the second quarter, and now we have a week for some much needed R&R. For those of you with pets and wondering about housing, I have some news. The on campus housing gods are considering allowing pets in some of the units. A couple of weeks ago there was a survey on the intranet for students to complete to determine interest in this. I figure that they may try it out, because lots of people (like me) didn't even consider the on campus housing with that restriction. I have a Doberman and it was really hard to find an apartment that did not have either a weight or breed restriction, so I finally just bought a house. Anyway, it will be good to meet all of you. Each of you will be assigned a big brother or sister from our class and will be given an email or other contact point. It would be to your advantage to contact your big sib, you could strike a treasure trove. Whomever gets me will definitely get one because they will have access to all of my notes, quizzes, old tests for all classes from this year (and previous years) as well as scouting reports on professors and classes. Congrats on your acceptances and welcome to AZCOM!

That is great news muonwhiz! Tell the people in charge that some of the new admits are highly in favor of allowing pets in on campus housing. It would sure save a lot of money.

I was reading on the Class of 2005 webpage that you went to UNT. I am a Texas resident who will be attending AZCOM in the fall. Do you want to return to Texas for your residency??

Jhug,
Congrats to the third power!!
good luck no matter what you decide to do....we'll all eventually hook up in the Valley of the Sun. Take care,
Emil

Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know that there are a few BYU folks heading down to AZCOM too. Sorry for being so bashful about writing. I posted a message earlier about housing at AZCOM and was looking for a little help. My wife and I have been planning on living at Meadow Glen, but I've recently heard all kinds of fun, scary stuff about the place...so we're kind of looking else where. Any ideas? Those darn internet pictures get you every time! We're looking for the typical affordable place that's fairly close to school. If you have any ideas, let me know. I know a bunch of you guys are planning a whole caravan down there in a couple weeks. Would you mind sending me some info on any good places? Thanks!!

Wow Jason, congratulations. My jaw just hit the floor! What a great mission you are about to take on. You will be the ultimate Daddy. I think it's wise of you to take the year off - your wife will need you.

You will be missed in AZ!

Derek
