Utah AZCOM'ers for 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just to boost our azcom pride-- i work at a charity clinic and we have 1st year med students from the u come to do clinical stuff. Anyway, one came in and i told him about me going to azcom and he said he was accepted at the u, azcom, gw, and albany. Other than the u being so inexpensive he would have gone to azcom over gw and albany! just a little pat on our backs :)

I work all day Saturdays, but later on Friday would be OK. Otherwise, here are all of the
other times we are available... hopefully one of these times will match up with you all: Any time day or night on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays, or Saturdays after 7:30pm. Let us know,
Derek & Hilary

Here's another option...not to confuse things too much :) We could all meet at my house downtown and do it pot-luck style. Hopefully that way we could work around schedules a bit better.

Congrats on all of the AZCOM acceptances, I am from S. CA, and cant wait to start. Personally, I would like to go into cardiology(electrophysiology). I know it is early to be so specific, but I have had some personal experience with the subspecialty. I am getting married in August before we start. My fiancee and I would like to live in the apartments on campus. I cant wait to meet everyone. This is so cool. By the way, my family has a home on the colorado river, only about 2 hours from the campus. Once we get into school, and settle down a little bit, if we need a break, we can take a trip to the river. We keep the boat there (wakeboarding baby, since I wont be surfing for at least 4 years), and we are right on the river, it'll be sweet.

Ryan,

Welcome aboard!! Great to have you as part of the group. A lot of the AZCOMer's on here are from the Utah area.....i'm from Texas. This past summer I went white-water rafting with some friends down the Arkansas in Buena Vista. We had a blast, but next time we want something a little more hard core.........though the scenery was awesome!

Anyways, congrats on gaining acceptance to AZCOM! I went with my gut when deciding on schools...I liked AZCOM the best! I plan on living on-campus as well....they should do just fine for a couple of years.

Hey Ryan, congrats on the acceptance. I read in another post about you talking about the lds rank at azcom, it should be well represented. I served my miss in southern cal, I had a hard time choosing not to go to pomona. What were your thoughts on Pomona??? Just curious what your reasons may be. I love the area where your from. Congrats on the Marraige, My wife wants to make many new friends. We will look to see you in the fall.

About getting together, I hate to be the "I am the poor married student father" but as much as I like rodizo grill I think it would be a better atmosphere to go with Jhugs suggestion and meet at his house. That way, you don't have to wait and it is easier to get to know everyone. Tell me what you think and we can get a managable time for everyone. :D

Hey Hawk, thanks for the reply. Yeah, my fiance really wants to make sure we make some friends so that she has a good support group. Sometimes I think it is everybit as hard on the wives as on the students. I was accepted to Pomona first. COMP and AZCOM were my top two schools, and I was lucky to have those two as my first two interviews, a week a part. So the interview process was cheap for me, no flying. Anyways, I was all about COMP until I interviewed at AZCOM, and saw how awesome the campus and surrounding area was compared to COMP, plus they had the oncampus housing. It just felt like the better fit. It will be hard to be without surfing for that long, but I will manage. I am investing in the rest of my life.

It is important for our wives to have good friends to fill the hours that we are not present. I know my wife is also looking forward to meeting up with all your wives.

AZCOM impressed me from the beginning. They were my first interview and, unfortunately for all the other schools, they were the standard by which I judged all. It is such a great school with potential that is immediate as opposed to down the road like other schools. I need my education now, not the potential of great things in upcoming years. I was impressed with the different aspects of the other schools I interviewed at, but AZCOM took the cake. Early clinical exposure, faculty that are there to teach and keep that perspective, a STRONG vibe of "contentment" amongst current students, great location, decent housing, great setting for clinical opportunities (1.2 million people in the phoenix area), and the list goes on.

Basic thing...AZCOM fits me and my family. The other schools I interviewed at were great, have great aspects, but AZCOM had the combo that was right for me. Good luck to everyone with their educations, and for my soon to be classmates...It is going to be great!

AND...I am good with any arrangement you guys make for meeting and dinner.

I totally agree with Ryan and Maximus. I really was set on CCOM, but after comparing the area and just "all around experience" and with persuasion from others I really just felt AZCOM would be the best. It was good that someone else(Ryan) had a similiar experience with deciding between the schools. I am also happy to hear that it only takes about 5 hours to get to southern cal. I think we all made a good decision. Give yourselves a pat on your back.

Are we on for dinner at jhug's this friday night?

Good Question! Everyone put your say in for dinner on the 25th of Jan at Jhug's. It'll be fun.

Let's see- the 25th is a Friday right?? I work until 5pm and have to go to another job at 10pm. That's enoght time to squeeze it in isn't it? Post your emails here and i'll send you directions to my house. Who wants to bring what?? Should we have one bring drinks, appetizers, and a couple could bring main course stuff--oh yea, and dessert?? How many should we expect to entertain? If anyone has any fun games- bring them along as well.

Sounds good to me, just let me know if it is a go and what I should bring.

everyone-- post what you feel like brining- and you emails and i'll send you directions...actually it is super easy to find my house- go to the west side of the mega-nacle conference center and look west! We are looking forward to meeting everyone!!

I wish I could be there!!
I'll be in Vegas this weekend, but I'm still
looking forward to meeting everyone!!
Have fun at JHug's!
:(

Emil-- i talked with the gurgell's on sunday and richard said he knows your sister or something like that?? anyway, he said you are a super person and excited about going to azcom. That stinks about this weekend...is everyone else on for it??? I didn't see too many responses about what to bring and all that good stuff.

Sorry, I have been super busy at work. Are we looking at a BBQ or just everyone bring their own dish and something on the side. We shouldn't have any problem bringing whatever we need to. Just let me know what you are thinking.
[email protected]

Hilary and I are on for Friday. We'll bring anything - just let us know jhug!
[email protected]

I was just thinking simple stuff-- pot salads and stuff like that. We could buy a couple pappa murphy's pizzas--Hawk, you bring the salad & dressing. DaddyD, could you bring drinks?? Maybe a few two-liters of something. Anyone else?? Maximus, bring dessert-- brownies or something easy- like...parfait, everyone likes parfait (just a little shrek joke)
Let's keep it super simple- for my pregnant wife's sake :) I'll email you all the address so everyone coming post your emails. Should we say around 6:00ish.

Sounds good...Don't know how to make Parfait, but wives know everything so I'll ask mine. If not, then we will all get brownies by default. Even I can't screw up brownies.

6ish will be cutting it close for me (I don't get off work till 5ish, and work in East Bay.) I should be able to make it there closely thereafter, though.

Sounds good JHug, both Maximus and I will most likely arrive about 6:15 to 6:30 just because of work, but I am good with bringing the salad and dressing. I have found another Utah AZCOMer and invited him and his wife, I have yet to hear and will let you know what happens. Everyone bring any cool information that you might have found for housing or anything pertinent. Thanks, look forward to seeing you.

JHUG,

Richard told me you guys attend the same ward...that's pretty random!! I really wish I could be there to meet everyone, but I'm going to try to win enough in Vegas to pay the $750.00 deposit due in March  !! If you all get together again, I'm there!!!
Have fun!!

Way to go Emil!! While you are at it you should win enough for the $1000 after that!!

We're on for Friday. We won't let you down with our drink selection. Emil - good luck in Vegas!

Derek

We're looking forward to this Friday. Seeing how most have kids having to work at 10 won't upset too many! Any suggestions on pizza?? we thought bbq chicken and hawaiian unless any object.
EMIL-- make us proud buddy!! maybe you could win enough for ALL our $750 deposits :)

Wish I was closer so that I could meet everyone, I am sure you all have unique and interesting stories! Have a good time.

No worries tcom06...there will be other get-togethers. You might want to change your username...maybe to AZCOM06???

I've been thinking the same thing! How do I change it!?!?!?

Not a clue how to change your user name (maybe one of the administrators can do it for you)!! Just thought it was Ironic! Where are you from and why did you choose AZCOM? Where else did you apply? Details, my friend!!!

Well, it looks like I'm the late comer. I'm the one Hawk invited up. The misses and I are planning on making it, just need to know when and where and what to bring. Looking forward to meeting everyone. C'Ya..

I from Texas, but have always had the intention to go to med school out of state. Texas schools go by a different grading system than does every other medical school in the U.S. It just so happens that the minor discrepencies between AACOMAS/AMCAS and TMDSAS (the texas application service) affect me big time. I have met a couple of other SDNers who have encountered the same problem. Anyways, needless to say, I am a much stronger candidate (based strictly on numbers) out-of-state than in-state. I got over this a long time ago, I am just excited to be going to med school.

As for my screen name.....I honestly don't know why I picked 'tcom06' other than the fact that I am a texan, graduating from med school in 2006. I realize now that some people think my screen name refers to the UNT-HSC school (or TCOM). TCOM is an awesome school, but they go by TMDSAS not AACOMAS. I do plan on returning to Texas for my elective rotations and eventual residency, but I more than welcome the opportunity to attend medical school in another state.......especially Arizona.....I really liked it! Enough details for you Maximus!?!?!

Artois-- do you mind bringing a pizza?? If everyone is good with pappa murphy's, we can cook it at the house. Maybe bring the hawaiian pizza. If there is anything else you are dying to bring-- by all means! :) Email me your email address and i'll send you directions to my house. Good to have you along!
so now it's...
maximus= 2
DaddyD= 2.5
Hawk= 2
artois= 2
sounds super-- we'll see you all tomorrow!! By the way, bring games and stuff

I must admit, you are thorough. Too bad about the Texas application. I don't think you are going to be overly affected by it, though. AZCOM seems to be a great school, and it looks like our class is going to have a lot of great people. Gotta love it!!

Hey Jhug, just one change, our number will also be 2.5 instead of 2, we will be bringing our little boy.

Good to see you finally logged in Artois. We will see you tomorrow night then, are we deficient on bringing anything? We could always bring a little more.

Hey Tcom, I think I figured it out. Just click on my profile above and then go to update your profile and then it shows your user name and your publically displayed name. Change that to be what ever you want and that is what will appear when you do a post. I am pretty sure that is how it works. Hopefully that helps!(If you really wanted to know how to change it.) :D

HAWK!!!!

You are awesome, man!!! Truly a scholar!!!

Thanks Hawk! I should now show up as titan. No more tcom06 confusion nonsense!!!!!!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Maximus and I will be there around 6:20, don't start without us. Drive safely.

It will be good time...

For all those who can't make it...we all look forward to meeting up with you.

Enjoy your free time while you can!

Hey Maximus, stop putting up posts just so you can be a senior member :D . I know your plan. :D

Just working the system...

Hawk...BOW DOWN!!!!

If you can't find parking out front-- we'll let you in the back...just knock on the door!! We are looking forward to this!!

Hope everyone is having a good time at jhugs. There was a moment ealier this week when I contemplated coming up to this get together, but decided against it due to work, and my need for money right now. It would have been cool to be able to meet everybody. Oh-well, guess I will have to wait till August. Talk to you all later. Have fun.

Ry- i know it would be next to impossible with schedules but how fun would it be to get together in AZ or somewhere between us-- vegas or St. george??? maybe something to throw around. Thanks to all that were able to come friday-- after everyone left megan and i felt so great about the adventure of med school. Especially megan, it's good to know she'll have super people to be with while we are dying in class. i must admit, listening to you all was somewhat humbling! :)

Friday night Hil and I had a great time. We love you guys! Seriously, it was awesome meeting you all. We would do it again. The pre-meds I'm used to at the U are very intense, but you all are so laid back and down to earth. It's going to be a smashing four years! Your wives are all cool. It looks like Hilary already has a fabulous support network.

Next step is for Hawk to look into the price of Vespas. Since we're selling one car, the scooter will be crucial to us. Let's plan the first scooter rally for the weekend after our biochem exam - to San Diego! Rally Baby!!!!

I have one question for you AZCOMERs from Happy Valley: I have a buddy at BYU who is looking into DO school. I told him the best thing to do is shadow a good DO who regularly does OMM and is true to Osteopathic philosophy. Do any of you have recommendations for a DO in Utah valley who would be willing to help my friend?

Onward to the Land O'Cactus!!!

Hello, All!!

Friday night was really cool for my wife and I , too! Many thanks to Jason and Megan for hosting!! The trepidation surrounding the future is calming down a lot cause my classmates ROCK! Truly you guys are awesome, and your wives equally so.

I agree with you Derrick...everyone was real laid back. That is definately going to make for some good times and good studying. Also, email me and I will recommend a DO or two for your friend to contact.

Again, Thanks for the great time. I was very impressed with you all, and know that AZCOM is definately choosing QUALITY students! If time permits, we should have another get-together!

Hey Everyone, my wife and I had a very fun time hanging with you all. It was fun to see all of the different personalities and to see that internet relationships can work .

DaddyD, on with the vespas my friend, and we can take some victory laps when we pass our anatomy tests our first year. Give Maximus an email for your friends sake, He hooked me up with a great DO to shadow. That really helped me with getting into school.

I was really impressed with everyone on Saturday, sorry for taking about kids so much, you just have to stop us sometimes. I have felt much relieved since Friday because of how friendly everyone was and how we all jelled together. I am all about doing well at school, but being laid back and doing well is much more favorable. If any of you guys need anything, just let me know. If you are planning to get down to the big AZ, post the dates you are going. And if you find anything good housing wise or anything cool let us know. Take care and if we can lets get together again. Chow.
Vespas are the wave of the future. Don't miss your opportunity! ••

HAWK....You are the coolest!!! Abso-frigen-loutely cool!!!

i posted this question but thought i'd ask you anyway.... should i buy the 1st edition netter atlas for a really good price, or do i go new and more expensive??
