Utah AZCOM'ers for 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know that my wife and I just returned from a quick trip down to Glendale, and we found an awesome deal with Sagestone apartments. I posted the details on AZCOM housing. Best of luck, and I hope the info helps.

as happens so many times in life-- what is at one time a great concern is taken over by new, seemingly important ones! So now instead of wondering what atlas to buy i'm wondering-- do i go minivan or suv??? what do you all think?? i have teased my wife for years about owning a minivan and now the honda one is looking mighty tempting-- or do i go with an olympic chevy tahoe Z-71?? What is best for sticking three lil ones in??

I have heard that minivans are safer all around than SUV's. My brother and his wife own a minivan. It seats seven and hold their kids and their kids' friends no problem. Plus a lot of the minivans have a/c controls in the back seat so the passengers can direct the air onto themselves... or you can aim the air at the babies. It works really well because it's so hot in the Phoenix area in the summer. I think they might get better gas mileage than SUV's too but I'm not sure. I think all that kind of info in online at consumer reports and places like that.

I don't know J, maybe it's just the testosterone talking, but I'd definitely go for the Tahoe, and it's hard the beat the Z-71 package, but Kadyra has a point with the gas mileage and those Honda's aren't bad. Good Luck. Chow.

Hey Jhug, I would wait a while and look at the new Honda SUV they are coming out with. My bro in law works for honda and he says they will be pretty cool. You might be able to still get the SUV look, but with the better gas mileage. Just a thought. Good luck in deciding, though the tahoe does sound more manly.

Jhug, I cannot in good conscience allow you to choose a minivan over a tahoe with out first throwing in my 2 cents. I think the prerequisites for owning a minivan are: must be over 35, married at least ten years and have children that can walk. If you meet these requirements, by all means proceed with the minivan. Otherwise give great thought to the tahoe. Maybe it is the testosterone thing, but I think you will get all the benefits of the minivan and it won't be a minivan.....Choose wisely my son

OK I guess I have to redeem myself and explain. I actually hate minivans and would never own one. However, I'd never own an SUV either. I don't plan on ever having kids, so I can say that pretty confidently. But if I were going to have some children way way way off in my future :D I'd have to go with the minivan. But by that time, I'll be like 35 anyway, so I'd meet some of your criteria, sport. LOL I also like to joke around that minivans are for soccer moms. My friends would probably think it was highly amusing that I suggested one.

let me add to the prereq's of having three kids-- you must be slightly/moderately overweight, balding, mid/late thirties, and have a two day shadow because you are to tired to shave every day! Stick that in with the minivan prereq's and i'm in a lot of trouble (disclaimer: this is all a joke- i don't want anyone who may have three+ kids to start emailing me hate-mail  )
I will say, this has been the easiest HARD decision in my life-- i know what i have to do & what is best for my fam, but i think of med school and all the people i met and it gets really, really tough! :)

Kaydra, thank you very, very much! let me know friday

Did anyone else get a mousepad in the mail? Weird.

Mousepad? An AZCOM mousepad? I haven't gotten anything from them in a while.

Yup, an AZCOM mousepad. It has one of the campus buildings on it and someone on a bicycle. It is technically a Midwestern University mousepad actually. It doesn't say AZCOM on it anywhere.

I got a letter congratulating me on my "recent" acceptance, too. I guess if you want to consider late October recent. Maybe it's just to let me know they got my $750 check and it didn't bounce.

geez-- i didn't get a mousepad-- i hope my check didn't bounce

What's up with this mouse pad thing? I'm not sure whether I want a mouse pad, but I want something for that nice chunk-o-change they ripped from my....checking account :)
Sounds like Kadyra is the only one who's gotten one. I think someone is getting special treatment, starting a little early don't you think kadyra????If I don't receive anything soon I am going to call up and demand a pocket protector or something.

Here, here sport...I second your motion. :D :D :D

Well, I got my mousepad today. I am getting excited about school. I went out and bought a cheap A&P coloring book to bone up on my anatomy. I haven't stepped foot in a science class or lab in about 5 years. Anyone else doing any low stress review work?

Sugar72,

I am going through an accelerated Biochemistry book since I have never had the class. I am taking it a leisurely pace, nothing too taxing. I don't want to exhaust myself before the fall.

I got my mousepad today too, along with a lot of housing stuff. As for the boning up, I am still finishing this semester, 17 units upper division biology and physiology courses, it is going to be the death of me. Speaking of biochemistry, I am in my second semester of it, and I just took a test today, and I swear, this is one the most difficult classes I have ever had. The test was only on lipid metabolism, but my instructor is so bad, even all of the other faculty tell you not to take him. I just have to graduate, that is all I keep telling myself. Anyways, enough of my whiny rambling. Later days.

sweet!!!! i got my mousepad today....looks like my check didn't bounce afterall

Well, I got rejected from my #1 choice, University of Arizona, today. While I am extremely disappointed, I am extremely glad I will 99.999% for sure be spending the next four years with you nice people.

Now I just have to find a roommate  and that is always such a frustrating process ::sigh::

kadyra-- i must admit, i am dissapointedly content. Dissapointed because i feel for you about the rejection- content because you'll more likely be joining the azcom crowd :)

Thanks jhug. That is probably the best thing anyone has said to me all afternoon

hello peoples,
I have a lot of things to say and a short amount of time so I will get right to it. Kadyra, I am sorry to hear about UofA; an understandable disapointment, but it looks to me like AZCOM and us (as your future classmates) have scored a true gem....even if you are a wildcat (I hope you guys trounce USC in the finals). Second, I am still waiting on my mouse pad, I am just sure that the male man has realized the true value of the packages and stole it for his own personal mousing. Third, I am on my way to meet with a group of little ol' ladies (by the way when people put LOL in their posts....what does it mean? to me it mean little ol' ladies) It is for a scholarship. I am going to charm the nickers of them...Do the Joey from friends, "How you doin'?" I can always play the sympathy card with the crutches bit...whatever. Third, has anyone read the book, "House of God" by Shem, MD. If you haven't I strongly suggest you do...It is absolutely the funniest, most distressing portrayal of medical training I have ever read. And I have only read one....Seriously, it is very good. I will talk to ya later :D

I took a semester of Biochemistry in the Fall of 1997. That was the last science class I have taken...I am going to get my booty kicked in the fall! What book are you using for Biochem, is it any good - do you feel like you are becoming familiar with the material?

Does anyone have any suggestions of review books?

Thanks sport! :D That was a very very sweet thing to say. My official rejection from the UofA came in the mail today. I threw it across my room and I'm not sure where it landed. I'm not sure I care where it landed  I'm still upset. I will be for a while, I think. But one good thing came out of this-- my oldest brother is now speaking to me again. Sort of. I haven't spoken to him since I found out I was accepted at AZCOM. Perhaps he figures that since we'll be living in the same city (he lives in Ahwatukee in SW Phoenix with his wife and 2 sons), that he should be nice to his baby sister. So, I get to ocncentrate on finding some fast cash for next year. Thankfully, I already had a bunch of stuff started if I were to go to AZCOM-- my loan apps are in, I've scouted out housing, and stuff.

I don't know what is going on with your mailman. That is just weird. Perhaps mail from Phoenix to Portland is just slow.

I am watching the University of Spoiled Children play Arizona right now. The officiating in this game is crap. But we are ahead and are persevering despite it all, which is what counts. That Sam Clancy has some really long arms. Very very odd looking. OK I need to pay attention to the game. I'm glad though that I will at least have someone to watch the games with next year :)

ok, ok-- a pre-apology, i just had to say something because i laughed sooooo hard! And i know when you start typing fast the darndest things come out but.....
the male man!!! I'm totally not being critical i just got a chuckle.
kaydra, it's good to hear you are being good about the whole "try again next year" from UofA. I would have been wishing them to lose all night

Jhug,
I just got what you were laughing about....It took me a second. It's a combination of typing fast and the pain killers for my knee, not to mention my horrible ability to spell.

I am impressed that people are taking the initiative to start looking at science stuff. I am scared enough just thinking all that will be my life in a few short months. Sugar72, I am in the same boat you are....I haven't touched a science book since '97 or '98. I know where my first semester will be spent.

i'm so sorry sport-- i'm really not making fun or anything-it's all innocent :) I did mean to ask how the knee thing came out!!?? I've been reviewing my kaplan stuff-- it is really helpful with mnemonics and the general, overall theme of subjects. I guess i'll have another year of classes to kill :( any suggestions??

U of A is my alma mater. Basketball is my favorite sport. I can't punish my basketball team because the College of Medicine is lame  But I have a bad feeling about the team. When they won the tournament in 97, I was a freshman and had season tickets. When they got to the championship game last year, i was a 5th year senior and had season tickets. Now I'm not a student anymore and I certainly can't afford regular season tickets (student season tickets were $26 for half the season), so I don't think they'll be making it that far  And I couldn't very well root for USC to win. I can't stand them! They're almost as despicable as ASU! hehe

Sport, that knee injury soudns worse every time you mention it. Are you going to have surgery on it? How;s it holding up? I know taking pain pills on a regular basis can suck. I had to do that my sophomore year in college for a while. It will get better though.

I haven't looked at science material in about 10 months or so. I don't know if I am going to pick up anything to start on anatomy or biochem between now and August. I might. But it's doubtful. I plan on having as much fun and relaxing as much as possible between now and then. Studying is definitely not in the realm of fun for me

SCIENCE????!!!!

Jhug, no offense taken. I luaghed when I saw it to...just don't be thinking it's some kind of Fruedian slip. The knee is doing well, constantly uncomfortable but getting better every day. I had surgery a week ago friday and have been off work since. I start light work on monday and I'll see how it goes from there. I think I am pushing a little harder than normal, I can't stand being a gimp, not being able to drive and having to rely on others taking care of me....though it can have its advantages. The funny thing is that I went out the night before my surgery...Artois(sp?), man I hope you make it through this semester still in one piece, but just think how much better prepared for next year you will be. I hope that helps.

Adios

I seriously need to proof read things, it's Freudian.

Kadyra,

I know this doesn't help much, but sorry about the U of A deal. I agree with jhug (nice choice of words :) ), and I think it's great that you will probably be joining us in the fall. Glad to have you!

Sugar72,

The biochem book that I bought is entitled "Biochemistry (STARS series) 1st ed." and it is written by Robert Roskoski Jr. I have only gotten through the first few chapters, but so far it's been OK. I don't really know if it will make a difference or not, but it's nice to get my mind thinking scientifically again after a two-year break. Incidentally, the cell physiology prof. at my school recommended this book (and its study guide) to me as an accelerated way to learn biochemistry. Just so you know why I selected THIS particular one.

Good luck everyone and, again, it's nice to have you join us Kadyra.

Oh yeah....I haven't gotten a mousepad (or anything else for that matter) from the school yet. I did receive some financial information from DMU, though    ......guess I should have notified them of my not attending their school.

titan

Well, I'll get over my anger toward U of A soon enough. I appreciate how nice everyone has been here. It makes me feel a lot better despite a bunch of reservations that have begun to surface. I'll get over that too  I hate how when you're upset about one thing everything else wants to tie into it. ::sigh::

I can't believe you guys actually want to study right now. I mean, I miss school and all, but not enough to study biochem when I don't have to.

kaydra-- reservations??? Without delving into details, what kind of reservations?? The study thing is tough....we'll probably cover everything i could study in about 2 hours!! :) Titan, i still get things from DMU all the time!! I don't know if they are still trying to get me or if they just send stuff to everybody.

Anyone read the 'concerns with AZCOM' post?? What's up with that? Hope current AZCOMers post something soon before the topic gets bumped off of the first page into the graveyard of previous posts    .

Kadyra,
You should be nervous.....U of A will potentially play Gonzaga in the second round. There's no way that they should be a #6 seed. A #3 or #4 is closer to reality. Are you watching the tournament? I'm watching every game possible!!!
March Madness rules!!!!!!!
Have fun and good luck to Lute's Cats!!

jhug, My reservations are based on the fact that I might want to go into orthopedics. If I do that, I'll want to get an allopathic residency and it's virtually impossible. Of all the match lists I've seen, not one DO has done an allopathic ortho residency. I'm not 100% sure I want to do ortho, but it's a big interest to me. Yes, I am one of those annoying people who plan way too far in advance. That is my only concern with AZCOM. And I don't know if it really needs to be a concern yet. Ya know?

Emil, Of course I'll be watching as much basketball as possible. And I'm not worried about my Cats meeting Gonzaga. They beat Maryland and Florida early this season, so they definitely have it in them to beat tough teams. I am not nervous one bit. If we are on, we are virtually unstoppable. I can't wait til Thursday!!

titan, I don't have any concerns with AZCOM specifically. It's more the disadvantage being a DO is if you want to go into a competitive specialty via an allopathic residency. Why oh why did I have to like ortho so much???

kadyra,

osteo. ortho residencies. Seems these two subjects were meant for each other. You will get excellent training it is every bit as competative and if you really need the allopathic training you can always do a fellowship at a allopathic institution. just my 2 cents

Did any of you apply for the NHSC scholarship?
I am trying to refresh myself on the preceptor program. If any of you guys know the basics or the details of the program could you do a quick post? Thanks!

Titan,
Thanks for the biochemistry recommendation..it is on my hit list now.

Sugar,
The NHSC scholarship requires that you do primary care (peds, FP, internal medicine, ob/gyn, etc). The only reason I personally wouldn't apply for the scholarship is because I might find that Cardiology is for me down the road. In other words, I don't want to be obligated to primary care. If you are positive you are doing a primary care specialty, by all means go for it. Hope this helps. Look forward to seeing you in the fall at AZCOM.

Emil

Sugar, I just sent of for the app. Just for your info, it has to be submitted by the 29th of March to make the deadline. It takes two weeks to get to you and you also have to have AZCOM send a sheet that proves you will be attending. I will be rushed, but I am applying just to keep my options open, I am not sure what I would like to do in the future, and it is very hard to make a decision this far in advance, but if you know what you want to do this is an awesome scholarship to use. Just for your info.

sport,

I've written to like 7 different allopathic ortho residency programs asking them about how to be competitive coming out of a DO program. I haven't gotten a reply from any of them and I sent the e-mails like 5 months ago. It makes sense to me that ostopathy and orthopedics would go great together, but residency directors are LAME! But since I don't know what I for sure want to be yet, I am not too stressed. As the days go by, I get less and less freaked out.

kaydra, i look at where you'll do your clinical rotations. That is where you can seal the deal on residencies. Residency directors already have way to much on their mind so writing you back may fall pretty low on their to-do list :) I really have a lot of confidence in azcom's clinical set-up. I think in the preceptor-based setting we'll learn really valuable, practical skills that we can later use to impress the scrubs off someone in a hospital!! If you can prove yourself to someone in ortho while doing your clinicals-- you are in  My dream (while still trying to keep an open mind :) ) is surgery, and i have no reservations that if this is what i set my mind and talents to do-- i'll do it!!! I feel the same about you, or anyone who goes to azcom for that matter.

Answering e-mail takes as little as 30 seconds. I hate when people don't respond. It is one of my biggest pet peeves.

But yeah, I guess you're right about where to do clinicals. For some reason, that slipped my mind

great news!!! the dean ok'd my request to defer one year! looks like i'm changing diapers and mixing formula for the next year
Funny thing is, i wonder who will get more sleep- me or you guys cramming for tests!! :) This is a premature request but....would some of you mind keeping all your stuff for a new student next year???

jhug,

Glad everything worked out for you! I bet a bunch of us can save some stuff for you, me included. Good luck! :)

Hey jhug.....I just posted my 100th post for you, lucky you, huh!?!?

Congrats, JHug!

Nice to know that your wife will have a little help the next year. Best of luck to you!
