Uvm Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I found out today that I'm in the top 3rd at UVM, and I'm looking for some thoughts or advice.

Here's the story (sorry if it's long):

I'm accepted (and holding a spot) at UMDNJ-SOM. The major advantages to this option are two. One, it is much much cheaper (besides being public, I'm in-state). Two, my boyfriend is going to be in Newark, NJ, next year. Newark & Stratford are a lot closer than Newark and Vermont. His location for next year is fixed -- he has a clerkship with a federal judge there. After that, he will be looking around again, for a fellowship or academic job. The NJ-PA-NY-CT area is a better market for legal academics than Burlington. Three, I'm actually accepted there, though if what people are saying is true, I am _likely_ to be accepted to UVM.

(I'm also waitlisted at MCW (in Milwaukee), which won't be ranked until May 20. Can't bring myself to pull out of MCW's list until I know my number there, but feel unlikely to go there if accepted).

I really loved UVM when I visted. It was a very comfortable atmosphere -- smart but laid-back in the way my college was. So I have strongly positive feelings about it, except for the weather (though I can deal with that -- I spent 4 yrs in MN) and the distance from the boy. I'm far enough from being a dewy-eyed college girl to know that I am serious about the relationship -- the only thing keeping us from being formally engaged yet is that it socially requires that you start making official wedding plans, and we've had too much other life-planning angst this year to deal with it.

I also liked UMDNJ quite a bit, especially when I went to the accepted students' day and met current students. There are many things that I think I would like about osteopathy, and many MDs tell me it's not a big deal whether you're a DO or an MD.

I guess my question is, are there are points I'm overlooking in mulling this over? What would you do in my situation if it came down to choosing between an MD and a DO school? I don't want to do something I'll regret, but I'm not sure which option that would be.

1. again, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush (unless the bird in hand is ABSOLUTELY not your type).
2. cheap is good....at least you won't consider being on food stamps after graduation.
3. my advisor once told me that if my goal is to practice medicine, why the dilemma between MD and DO?
4. DO's make the same $$$$ as MD's, comparatively speaking.

I have to agree, as an out-of-stater, UVM is going to cost you alot of money, and Burlington is very expensive as well. You'll certainly see a wider variety of patients and conditions in NJ than VT. As far as DO and MD goes- it depends on your philosophy. MD is more established and easier to get the high paying specialties, on the other hand DO teaches you skills that MD school doesn't. Either way you'll be a physician. If I were in your shoes the differences in debt load would certainly make the decision for me.

i think grade wise, we all made the cut- that's why we were invited for an interview. dr. rathmell said that grades only serve to get you an interview invitation and from that point onwards, it all hangs upon the outcome of the interview.
looking back, i did not have a good interview- i was a bundle of nerves (and was trying too hard to make up for it) for 2 reasons;
1. uvm is my 1st choice
2. there's only ONE interview- if you screw it, you're pretty much screwed (kinda like newton's 3rd law)

medapp, i'm sad too but i know i have much to look forward to and i'm determine not to spend too much time licking my wounds. here's your choice- let's be sad together or let's encourage each other to move forward (just like redsox2004 is encouraging us now).

life goes on....o happy day.... 😉
Thank you redsox2004 and st. pius v-real words of encouragement 🙂 yes I guess we have to move on and work with plan B. I am really interested in the public health programs and hope to work on getting my MPH. And perhaps if the MD urge is still strong, I can reapply with a stronger background and experience.

Very good question, Iheart. I think it would be cool if we kept one another informed about whether we hear of any movement. It does seem from previous threads on SDN at least that no one heard before the middle of May. I have no idea why they would not tell us earlier, but there must be a good reason.

i asked mary campbell if there was a possibility of receiving an acceptance before may 15th.. she said that that could indeed happen if the waitlist movement was very active..

is it me or do the days seem so much longer having to wait for may 15th? hope everyone is doing well and keeping faith..

The days are longer ! It seemed like may came around pretty fast but the next 15 days are going to be so hard! Good Luck everyone ! :luck:

Anyone know how long you get, if accepted off the list, to decide? Do you have to give an answer immediately? Within 24 hours? Longer?

In case anyone is reading this, I will answer myself: depends on when you hear. Which makes sense. (I talked to the wonderful Mary Campbell today). 2 weeks for a while still. Less as it gets closer to August, but not less than 24 hours.

Please don't ever mention having to wait til AUGUST again! 🙁 I never knew waiting could be so exhausting. Waitlists all last year, waitlists all this year... anyone else slowly going crazy?

"Um, no your honor, i never really had any diagnosed chemical imbalances or neurotic episodes... well, until applying to medical school!"

Right. Is this whole process so we complain less about our residency schedules?

I'd say go with this option- sounds like being near your bf, and being able to enjoy life more with him and in general b/c you have more money to be able to do so, and therefore less anxiety is a no brainer. From the tone of your post, I think you've already figured this out though... 🙂 Go with the good old gut and run like a happy wildwoman into the NJ sunset.

whats up yall! just want to thank those who keep this thread alive.. this is the only thing that makes waiting a bit easier, and it's cool how everybody roots each other on..

corny as it sounds, lets hang in there together!

Does anyone know how many students are in the waiting list and how many were accepted in the past?

Has anybody asked the admissions office if there is anything waitlisters could that would change their status or rank in the list?

from what i've heard from mary campbell, there are about 100 on the waitlist.... 😱 ....how deep uvm goes searching throught the alt. list? it depends on the acceptance pool....
from what i've heard (again from the admissions staff), last year, they went pretty deep but the year before, most on the alt. list didn't make it.
dr. rathmell did not mentioned anything about the chances for each tier on the alt. list. all he said was if you make it to the waitlist, chances are good that you'll get in....lately, i've heard that if you're on the bottom pile....better luck next year.
hope that helps!
what's up fellow uvm-ers - on-the-wait-list???? let's get this party started..... 😀

Has anyone been taken off this list yet? Man, I'm getting anxious

Middle tier, here. UVM is #1 choice.

I have heard two things about how many people get off the waitlist:

1) about 2/3 of the class usually comes off the waitlist

2) last year about 80 people came off the list (from my pre-med advisor)

Take your pick as to which is true. If you combine 2 with the rumor that there are about 100 people on the list, we're all doing allright.

So don't lose hope!

Thanks for answering my questions.

Yeah, has anyone been off the list yet? I guess that there will be more movement after the 15th. But do people really wait that long? hhmmm....

hey guys, I'm a 1st year at UVM.

The waitlist is moving; its probably just not being reflected in these forums. Last year I was accepted off the waitlist before the May 1st ranking so as soon as people decline or withdrawal, new acceptances are mailed out. Naturally, I would assume a big chunk will be taken off the waitlist after May 15th.

Also, as was already mentioned, the waitlist moves all the way into August. I know at least 1 classmate that got an acceptance literally days before orientation. I'm available for any questions and I can ask Mary things for you guys as well.

gl!

hi ag006,

was wondering if the number of people who are waitlisted year was actually 100 as someone mentioned or a rumor. Thanks!

I just asked Mary and she told me she wasn't allowed to say. I'm not sure how the rumor started, but I don't know how many people are on the waitlist.

mary told me a few weeks ago that there are about 100. straight from the vine! also, she informed me today that if you're in the bottom pile, traditionally, it means better luck next year.
here's where most of you would like to know....not much movement at all from last week until now and mary sounded surprise.

She told me the same thing.

Hey, have you guys started working on your financial aid? I contacted Shelley from College of Medicine financial aid office. She said that a fiancial aid packet is sent within a week after receing an acceptance letter from the school. It looks like most deadlines for scholarship for this year have passed. Do you know if there are any schoalrship that we could still apply to?

Have you guys started lookign for a place at UVM? Where are the nice and affordable areas near the school?

Also, do you know if a car is necessary? How is the public transportation over there?

Gosh, it is so hard to relax.......I despite the anxiety brought by the uncertainty and the waiting. Sigh!

Pretty much all of Burlington, Winooski and Colchester are affordable - it just depends on how and where you want to live. And like any town, there's nice (South Burlington, Colchester) and not-so-nice (Winooksi, Old North End). The admissions office used to keep up a list of housing availability, but I'm not sure if they still do that.

It's possible to survive without a car for the first year or so. A friend of mine did it, but it wasn't easy. The city is pretty spread out, so getting to the store, school, downtown and DIV appointments can be taxing, especially in the dead of winter. There are apartments right across from school, and Fort Ethan Allan is a pretty good option, but it's about 15-20 mins away by car. I never ventured on the CCTA, but you can check them out here: http://www.cctaride.org/main.php

GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT THE GOOD AND NOT-SO-NICE NEIGHBORHOODS. WILL DEFINITELY USE THIS GUIDE WHEN LOOKING FOR AVAILABLE HOUSING. yEAH, I ALREADY GOT THE HOUSING LIST. IT IS NOT ACTUALLY CHEAPER THAN I EXPECTED. APRTMENT RATES ARE CLOSE TO THAT OF IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA.

FOR OTHER UVM MEDICAL STUDENTS IN THE FORUM, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST YOUR OPINION OR ADVICE.

Also, for those who have had experience in relocating from coast to coast, have any advice on moving service companies?

i guess I WILL have to BRING MY CAR!!

Has anyone called the admission office recently?

Haven't heard anything yet...Eena, seems you are really getting things in gear in case you get off the WL. I figure that if I get in, I can always live in my car for a few days until I find something affordable (kidding, sort of...). Yeah, but I think it would be helpful to know if anyone got in off the middle-tier maybe last year, at least then we'd be able to better gauge how far they might go this year? Maybe next week things will start rolling?

I'm with sox24. I heard Vermont has some great camping. I figured I'd camp out until the first frost... hmmm... that should get me by until 3 days post orientation? Maybe til the first snow then... end of august?
I find it hard to plan anything after being screwed by waitlists last year.
If anyone hears of any movement please post!

hey all, i was placed in the top third of the waitlist but just withdrew my application. i am hoping my withdrawal opens up a spot to someone in the middle or bottom third who really desires and deserves to be there. the school was a hard turn down, probably my favorite location of any school - burlington and VT rock! - but unfortunately the out of state tuition would have caused me excessive financial burdens. so good luck to everyone and hang in there on the waitlists (i am in the same boat at 3 other schools i would dream to be at)!! :luck:

Hey everybody,

I finally decided to call UVM today (I was too scared to do it during my finals) and I found out that I'm on the top third of the waitlist.

I had originally decided to withdraw regardless of my place on the waitlist, but now that I actually have some hope to get in, I don't know what to do anymore. I really did like UVM a lot, and I guess I just convinced myself that I wanted to withdraw in case I didn't end up being in a good position on the waitlist...

I'm also accepted at another school that I really like, so I'm really confused now. Is anyone else in the same situation?

Anyway. Good luck everyone! :luck: :luck:

Do you guys know how the UVM chooses alternate applicants from the list, does it go by the ranking?

Hey, has anyone called UVM and asked if there has been a movement?

Thanks.

I found some stats on the uvm website regarding acceptances for the class of 2007.

For 101 positions, 214 acceptances were given to fill the slots.

I remember Dr. Rathmell said that 180 acceptances (prior to the waitlist) would be given to fill the 105 positions this year. So, assuming that the trend is similar, it seems to me that about 30-40 people came off the waitlist in 2007.

So based on those numbers, it seems as though they get pretty deep in their waitlist. And considering their are more spots this year (105), I'm hoping that more of us will be pulled off the list! Let's hope that many, many people decline their acceptance in the coming days!

I have read in other forum students saying that they are in the bottom part of the top tier, or something like that. So, do you guys know if the admission of office could tell us if we are in the tier, say top, middle or bottom part of the first tier?

I actually saw those threads before I called UVM and was under the impression that was how they gave your location on the list. So, I was shocked when I asked about it and she said, "I'm not privy to give that sort of information".

My question should have been, " well who is" but she scared me and it was 5:05am (cali time...yes I'm that neurotic; yes, I know I'm pathetic; yes, I know I'm a loser)

Thanks, kc123. I'm in at Penn State. I think I like both schools equally...

Here is the problem. On one hand, Penn State seems like a better choice because 1) "proven" curriculum (read: old - they didn't change it recently, so they know it works), 2) closer to home, and 3) expensive, but cheaper than UVM.

On the other hand, though, UVM's reputation is excellent for primary care and that's what I want to do. Plus, I totally fell in love with Burlington. Much better than Hershey, PA! Finally, I just had a good "gut feeling" about UVM.

Anyhow. I hope we all hear good news soon! :luck:

hi people! ahhh, the anxiety of being on the waitlist....well, it's official that i will most probably wait around for another year unless i hear from uvm before mid-june, which i probably won't bcoz i'm in the bottom third. gave up spot at mcg and will go through AMCAS again....i will definitely apply to more than 4 schools this time.

Has Penn state given you a good financial aid package?

Since we haven't had any movement yet, and we know that some people have withdrew, I am pretty sure there will be a slew of acceptances come May 16th. :luck: 👍

They haven't bothered to send me my package yet... But, I know some people who have received it and it's nothing to brag about. Apparently, PSU mostly give out loans and maybe $2,000-$3,000 need-based money to those qho qualify. If I recall correctly, UVM can only offer loans. Right?

I just thought about something else, too. Even if tuition was the same at UVM and PSU, it would still be cheaper to go to PSU because the cost of living is lower in Hershey than in Burlington. I mean, I can rent an apt for ~ $400/month in Hershey. How much would that cost me in Burlington? If anyone has an estimate, it would be very helpful. Thanks guys!

I apologize if this was mentioned previously (I didn't read the entire thread), but why did you give up your spot at mcg? I didn't apply there, but I know some people who interviewed there and they only had good things to say about it...

But, anyhow, I'm crossing my fingers for you! Gluck 🙂

Housing in B-town is very expensive, I've been here for the last five years and the rates have gone up drastically the last 2 years. There's not much new housing being built and so houses are waaaay over priced. This drives up rental prices. A standard 2 BR apartment will run 1000-1500 a month. Try getting in to Centennial Court, it's partially owned by UVM, right near campus, very well maintained and with roommates will cost you about 500 a month. You're going to want to be near campus, the traffic coming into Burlington in the mornings is pretty bad now in every direction. Hope this helps!

don't really want to stay in the south for med. school- i mean, i have been in the south the last 10 yrs. and i know i will be back here to practice (girlfriend, friends, some family from the south)....you only live once and i'd like to take this medical school experience to a fresh-level where everthing is different. also, i want to be closer to ski resorts and cold weather....i don't do well in a hot-humid climate. 😀

I hope so!!!

Hey, do you guys know if the office could tell us if we are in the top, middle, or bottom of the top tier?

And, do they pull alternate applicants by the ranking?

OK, so not to rain on our SDN parade here, but...
If UVM accepts like 180 people off the bat, aren't we waiting for 80+ people to w/draw before they tap into our waitlist group?
So all those w/drawals we hear about... they could be contributing to that 80 and have no impact on waitlist movement.
?
WHY did that just come into my head?
Could I be any more pessimistic this morning?
