VCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey does anyone know when VCOM gets out for the summer? not exact dates, but ie: first week of june...mid june? july? anything really. Just wanted to get an idea, i know the students only get a month off just didn't know when it started...thanks! 🙂

Not sure about the calendar, but last year I believe they got out for July (maybe toward the beginning?) and I know they came back in mid-August (we started the 18th, I think, and the second years started the same week).

There is a shorter summer break, but we do get week-long breaks in between each block. 😀

Has anyone sent a letter of interest and heard back after they received it? I sent a letter over 2 weeks ago, and still haven't heard anything. My application has been placed on hold since early October. I was just wondering what anyone else's experiences might be. I don't know if they might let you know in some way that they received it or if they just ignore it. Thanks!

i was placed on a pre-interview hold (post secondary) a while ago. i sent in a letter of interest along with more lor's (from 3 additional do's) and haven't heard any update besides it would be reviewed again in the future, as the email said when i was originally placed on hold. good luck.

I also got placed on pre-interview hold..whatever that means. I wonder if there is a wait-list ranking style for those on hold for an interview? haha that would be funny. I never knew such a thing existed actually, i thought they made it up for me 😉.

hey all... sounds like there may be another batch of acceptances, rejections, or holds going out today or tomorrow... i interviewed on tuesday and they said they were meeting to discuss applicants this morning... good luck to all!

accepted just a few minutes ago... very excited about this school, definitely one of my top choices...

I got an interview here! YEAH!!!! Wohooo. They wanted me in Dec 1rst but since I am a professor I am too busy, so I told them Dec 14th. Really excited because alot of my friends and people I know did not get an interview. Wish I could have made Dec. 1rst. 🙁 This will be my second interview, with NYCOM comming up as my 3rd in January. Where do I fly in etc? I need advice on what and where to go/do. Thanks much. Good luck to everyone.

Congrats Jedi, too bad you couldn't make it then, I am interviewing on Dec. 2nd, it would have been good to see you again (remember I was at the DCOM interview). I am flying in to the Roanoke airport. The hotel I am staying at will pick me up from there (it is far from what I can see maybe 30 miles?) and they also have a shuttle to the school as well. This is nice because then I won't have to rent a car (trying to save some $$)! Good luck on your interview!

Thank you so much. You too- all the best. Have you heard from DCOM yet? Today or tomorrow maybe we will. What hotel are you staying at? I am pissed I can't go earlier but I mean they give 2 weeks warning I can't make it, I have too much going on with my professorships in finishing the semester. That would have been funny seeing you AGAIN for another interview! You know my opening line would be, "I guess we are destined to be classmates somewhere!" HAHAHAHA:highfive:

just got an interview invite for dec. 9th. over the phone they did say that if accepted i would have to take a graduate level biochem class in spring of 2010 and do decently in it. has anybody else been told anything like this of being offered a conditional acceptance? i guess you can't skip multiple days and weeks of undergrad biochem to go backcountry skiing while the snow was good (hence the name reference to telemark skiing) and not have it come back to bite you at some point.

Hey everyone. I was accepted for the upcoming class, but I have a question for my friend who is not an SDN user. He had an interview at VCOM and was rejected, which is completely acceptable. However, he was a little put off by the email he received. The email said that they did NOT encourage him to reapply. Is this normal? I know plenty of people that reapply and get in so I was a little surprised by this response. Has anyone else gotten a response like this? Applicants can change so much over the course of a year (especially numbers e.g. MCAT / GPA) so it seems kind of odd to tell someone that they shouldn't reapply. Any help would be greatly appreciated.👍🙂

Rotation sites are getting better and better. I am in the Eastern Virginia site... this includes Riverside and the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Dr. Elliot is the site coordinator and she is amazing. The didactics are very helpful and the area is great (if you enjoy being near water... as I do). We get to work in close proximity to EVMS students as well as MCV, UVA, etc. I am really enjoying my time out here! I have spoken with my classmates and they are having a wonderful time too. Many places to choose from! There is even a New Jersey site that has a lot of opportunities as well. Let me know if you would like to hear more.. (PM me)

I was offered a conditional acceptance and am taking biochem next semester. Totally worth it! Good Luck

My problem is this. They put me on hold the day after i submitted my secondary in July. In august i sent another letter of interest and another 4 lor's from DO's. Registration has closed where i am living and even then finding a graduate level biochem class i could take starving in january is probably not possible. Had they let me know even a month ago i may have been able to register but instead they hold my app for 4 months and tell me now that it is too late to register for a class.

I would assume THEY know how much an applicant's numbers can change as well. Perhaps they saw something in your friend during the interview that they did not like and do not believe your friend is a good fit for the school. Maybe your friend showed some arrogance or another undesirable quality that put off the interviewer. It is not common for rejection letters to discourage people from reapplying. Trust me, I've received a lot of them. 😀

That's what I figured. Seems kind of cold though. Well, it's good to know that this kind of rejection is not the norm.

Interviewed at VCOM today and was VERY impressed. I love the area and the school. So far VCOM has been the best interview day I've had and probably the nicest school. They said decisions will come tomorrow. :xf:

What questions did they ask?

What questions did they ask?

The interview was very conversational and laid back. They asked the typical questions:
Why osteopathic medicine?
Why medicine?
Describe an instance where you worked as part of a team.
Have you ever experienced OMM? What do you know about it?

Then the general questions about my specific application. I wouldn't worry too much about the interview. They insist they only wanted to get to know each person and that's exactly how they came across. Just be yourself and answer truthfully.

Got my acceptance call a few hours ago. YAHOOO! So excited, I love this school. Now I have a HUGE decision to make, but about 90% sure I'm going to VCOM.

Good luck to everyone else interviewing, this is really a wonderful school!!

This is gonna be a tough decision. LMU-DCOM or VCOM. We'll see.

I guess you liked it over DCOM? I interview on monday, I am staying in blacksburg over the weekend to get familiar with the area. Things sound really good. Would love to get more of your feedback, PM me or something. You must have really been impressed because you seemed gung ho for DCOM a couple of weeks ago.

Ditto. Thinking things over now...but like I said before about 90% leaning towards VCOM....it is just that little nagging 10% that has me contemplating DCOM. 🙂

I had a DCOM deposit due Monday and will withdraw my application after interviewing and being accepted at VCOM. DCOM is a good school but nowhere near the quality of VCOM in my opinion. Good luck with your decision. It's a good problem to have.

I'm gonna disagree with you on that one. Every DCOM student that I talked with loved the school. That's every student I talked with at the pizza night and on interview day. That's like 15 students. I talked with two VCOM students. BOTH of them had complaints that appeared to not be getting better. VCOM rotation sites might be better, but I will put the DCOM's first two year's curriculum and faculty up against any program in the country.

That's why I said "in my opinion". While I agree that most DCOM students are excited about their school I think your sample size may be a little skewed. Do you think a student with a negative opinion of the school would attend the pizza night? I know several VCOM students personally who LOVE their school. We can't argue opinions. Like I said, good luck with YOUR decision. Mine is made. 👍

To both of you, I am glad that you all found the right school for you. That's what I am in the process of doing. I didn't think that it would be this hard. I went ahead and sent my deposit to DCOM just because I did not want to give up that seat. I still have a month for VCOM, so we'll see where I'll end up. There's nothing like setting the course for the rest of your life. 😱

Not sure about the calendar, but last year I believe they got out for July (maybe toward the beginning?) and I know they came back in mid-August (we started the 18th, I think, and the second years started the same week).

There is a shorter summer break, but we do get week-long breaks in between each block. 😀
2012er speaking here... We got out 6/19, and came back 8/17 - so we got a healthy 2 months.

This summer, we get out at the end of May and don't start rotations until August 23rd, so we'll get 11 weeks.

just got my seconday application. hope to fill it out and return it ASAP. too many essay

If in the process of, "setting the course for the rest of your life," you discover that you have an abundance of tolerance for disorganization, seemingly constant changes at the last minute, and a level of incompetence from school leaders and instructors like you have never seen elsewhere, then VCOM is the right place for you. The reality is that VCOM will NEVER have the caliber of faculty like you will find at DCOM as long as the current administration in place. You will also be hard-pressed to find students at VCOM to openly discuss the problems because the intimidation factor is unprecedented. The "real" VCOM is a business that, at the present time, is a lucrative venture for the dean and her family members; it is NOT what is being sold to you by the admissions office. Sure, the people in admissions are great, but once you become a student, the admissions office has no purpose in your life for the next four years.
