VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, everyone! I just joined SDN so forgive me if this question has already been asked. I'm working on finishing supplemental applications this weekend, and I'm curious as to whether or not other applicants are reusing essays for the supplemental essays? There are similar questions between the schools I am applying to. I was thinking about generally using the same essay with a couple of edits/tweaks. Would any of you advise against this?

Hey everyone, I submitted my main VMCAS application to Western and I heard there is a supplemental application. Does anyone know how we can get access to this supplemental application? Or will we get some link emailed to us?

Thank you!

I think the general advice was not to re-use your essays between personal-supplemental, but should be fine between supp-supp among different schools! If some of the supplemental essay topics are similar to the personal essay topics, then show them a different side of you, or another perspective of you rather than repeat the same thing. However, if there are similar topics between supplemental essays for different schools, definitely go ahead and re-use them if you like! They're not gonna share that info between schools (if they do, oops!), and I know I have 3 schools with diversity-topic essays so I'm gonna do my best to use the same topics, just adjust to the word counts.

What's you guys' take on putting high school graduation honors in the app? I wasn't one of the top 3 positions, but I was in the top 10%, and my school also gave an honor to students who made above a certain ACT benchmark (since it was required that we all take it). Would either of those things be worth mentioning?

Sorry, this question may have already been asked elsewhere. I am a second time applicant, but I only applied to one school last cycle. This cycle, I have three of my four applications ready to go, but I am still working on my supplemental application essays for my fourth school (Oregon). Can I submit my other three VMCAS applications without submitting my fourth? The supplemental essays are on VMCAS, which is why I ask.

Yes! You can submit your first 3 apps individually to at least get in line for verification, and then submit your last app when you have it finished up. So, instead of doing "submit all" you just do "submit" under each app you want to send in now.

Hi everyone!
Please direct me to the answer if this has already been asked 🙂

I'm working on some last minute updates to my application. I didn't originally think I needed to include high school experience since it was 10+ years ago, but after doing some more reading I decided to do so. I was in JROTC for all 4 years of high school and held different -- and sometimes multiple -- leadership positions per year. Should I make a new entry for each position or do one general JROTC entry and list the positions in the description box?

The different positions were: Squad leader (Sophomore), Platoon leader (Junior), Battalion commander (senior), Drill Team cadet (Freshman), Drill Team Commander (Sophomore, Junior), Color Guard (Freshman-Junior)

Also, I took latin my first two years of high school and our final exams were the National Latin Exam for which I received Magna Cum Laude. Is that worth listing as an achievement?

Any thoughts on including these experiences at all? I feel like they can only help even though they were so long ago.

I’d list this too. Definitely describe the whole thing so they know how much of an accomplishment taking the exam is and how well you needed to do for that distinction. If they don’t want it, they’ll just look past it.

Might as well. It won't detract from your application; you won't be marked down. The very worst that could happen would be for the selection committee to think, "Huh, she was very involved ". I was told by my advisor to include everything you think is relevant, from 9th grade onward. Even if it's not an organized activity (ex. Making tissue paper portraits of past presidents in your free time), if it takes up enough of your time, put it down. Every achievement counts.

Question for those that have submitted their apps. Can you still edit your colleges attended/transcript entry? I am ready to send my first few apps but I don’t want to get locked out in case I decide to apply to more schools and need to put some more classes as planned courses. I would take them at a school I haven’t taken classes at yet, so there wouldn’t be any new transcripts to send. I would need to be able to add another school and more classes after my app gets verified

Don’t believe you can do anything but add experiences (not change or delete) up to a certain date once you submit. I don’t think you can change anything in transcript entry once you click to confirm your classes (or whatever the button is) that allows you to assign your classes as certain prereqs in the supplemental portion.

Thank you very much, randomizereh! Happy applying and best of luck! 🙂

I just submitted mine and once you submit one application, everything is locked down except other school apps in the program materials section. So you could still add another school to your app but I don’t think you’d be able to add planned courses that weren’t listed before you submitted the first app. Hopefully that makes sense.

How many spaces are you guys putting to indent paragraphs in your essays? Is 4 spaces enough? Trying to make every character count..

Just submitted and kinda want to vomit. Anyways, I have a question. Do we need to do anything specific for LORs? 4/5 of my writers have submitted. Do I need to indicate which letters go where since some schools want 3 and others will accept up to 6? I don't see a place to do that in VMCAS or in the secondary section for the schools I selected. For reference, I am applying to UC Davis, WSU, CSU, and VMCVM at the moment.

What are some things I can talk about for my diversity essays? I’m a little lost... I’m a white cis female from Southern California from married parents and no struggles that would compare to those of others besides my mental health. I don’t want to say anything that could potentially undermine others, and I love that they are striving to support diversity, I’m just not sure what I have to offer in that regard. Any tips are more than welcome

There’s nothing else you need to do at this point. Since you’ve already got four eLORs in, even if the fifth doesn’t submit theirs in on time, you’ll be fine because you’ve already surpassed the minimum of three.

You can’t pick and choose which letters are read by which schools, unfortunately. For those schools that will only look at three, they’ll likely just pick the first three that are listed.

- Are you bi/tri/multilingual?
- Have you done any cool travel things that have changed your perspective?
- Even if you’re cis, are you LGB?
- Do you have any unique or cool non-animal related interests or hobbies (eg. art, writing, programming, a sport)?
- Did you do a “less traditional” pre-vet major, something other than a biology/-animal science/chemistry degree? Something in the liberal arts, especially?

There are other ways to show diversity than just straight demographics. The fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of vet school applicants are white 19 to 23-year-old women coming from middle class (or above) families, so you will have to find something else that will help you stand out.

When I applied several years ago, I leveraged the fact that I had knowledge of several foreign languages (Spanish, Japanese, bits and pieces of Mandarin and Korean), had some tutoring and teaching background, and had travelled abroad and seen how cultures can often differ drastically in how they view and treat animals, particularly in regard to health, and how having that perspective shaped my image of the roles a veterinarian can play within a community. I also briefly talked about my time in robotics and my hobbyist programming.

There are surely at least a few ways you can bring diversity to your class; you may just have to get a little bit more creative.

I remember at least one school (might have been Penn) had me list which LORs I wanted them to read. I think it was on the supplemental app. But I’m also remembering doing that on the VMCAS supplemental apps for a few schools that had a maximum number of LORs. Like there was a drop down menu and I selected which ones to submit to the school, and the one that had me do it through the supplemental app itself had me name which ones I wanted them to read. It was a year ago so I may be misremembering it, and it definitely varied from school to school, but there was a way that some schools had me select which letters I wanted them to read if they had a maximum.

Interesting. I haven’t heard of that, but it’s been several years now since I went through the whole process and I also never looked into Penn, if they do allow for that. None of the schools I applied to, though, had options for picking and choosing eLORs (Iowa State, Mizzou, Glasgow, Midwestern), so I kind of assumed that that was the case for most if not all schools. Sounds like I might be wrong, though?
I’m sure it just depends on the school. I applied to 11 schools so I have a higher than average number of applications to pull from. You’re completely right in that some schools don’t let you choose whose letters they read. I wish I remembered which schools did, but I think if it’s not abundantly clear that the school lets you do that in either the VMCAS supplemental app or the school specific supplemental app then they don’t allow for it at all.

Same this cycle. A few schools ask you to specify which 3 letters you want them to read on their supplemental and others don’t. I reached out to UGA recently and they said they read all LORs submitted. So I think it’s pretty variable school-to-school.

I addition to what Elkhart said, what life experiences do you have to offer? I 100% fit the demographics of the average vet med applicant. So in my diversity essay, I talked about how my family owns pet stores, and how that relates to small animal medicine and also how we have to think about the group similarly to production medicine. It also gives me a unique perspective on animal rights vs animal welfare.

Good to know. Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have just said that there point-blank isn’t an option like that. My fault. I apologize for the misinformation.

I guess this is a sign that I should stop commenting in these threads; I think I’m probably a few too many cycles far removed from the process and my information is mostly out-of-date at this point. Especially since I’m not even in vet med at all anymore so I have no reason to refresh my knowledge. Haha. :bag:

Not even!! I think a lot of your advice is super helpful!

I talk about diversity in my more significant experiences ... working in a GP in an affluent and progressive neighborhood of California plus we offered Chinese medicine so we had a lot of LGBTQ clientele. Also talked about my ER experience on the east coast where we had wealthy clients from beach communities and socioeconomically disadvantaged clients from rural inland communities. I volunteer with an organization that provides funds to be used towards non-routine veterinary treatment so I talked about working with applicants experiencing a variety of financial hardships like living in poverty or recently filing bankruptcy. Then talk about volunteering with a therapeutic riding group, where I directly interacted with the children. Essentially I talk about working with a large variety of people and what that means in clinical medicine (kind of like what was mentioned above about respecting cultural differences in terms of treatment plan chosen for an animal, etc). I finish up my diversity essay by talking about why diversity and inclusivity are important to me in academia and the workplace. Then say I will contribute to the diversity of my class because I’m Hispanic (though I don’t emphasize this because I consider myself to be very culturally white), I’m a military spouse, and I’m a career-changer.

There are definitely unique things about you, you just may have to do a little digging to find those things. Look at all of your experiences and maybe ask a few friends what they think makes you unique.

No, thank you for the response! I was just having a post-submission doubt fest

I got about 150 veterinary hours abroad while in Spain actually, and I was hoping having that exposure could allow me to bring some diversity? I also know quite a bit of Spanish from that but I am always afraid to say I speak it/am fluent because if they start speaking to me in rapid-fire Spanish I will definitely panic and struggle. My parents have moved twice since I came to college so I have spent some time in different parts of the country and even gotten some hours in those places as well as here and Spain, but I am not sure how much that really would contribute. Thank you for the advice guys!

Hey all!

1. What is the general consensus regarding end date for present experiences? Setting the date as the day we submit the VMCAS application?

2. Can I finalize my application before completing a supplemental application? One of the supplementals I am waiting on for something, but I could submit the main app with one of the supplementals I have finished.

3. Can I verify my VMCAS app even if I'm still waiting on one LOR?

Can't you mark them as "current" and not put an end date? Or has that changed?

You can, but I thought I read on here to put an end date? Maybe was old thread. Also it shows up further down the list if you have been there a while it shows up where you have the start date even though it's current and should be on the top

Okay guys I am freaking out! I made a mistake when inputting my transcript and I accidentally said I received an A in a sociology class but I actually got an AB. When my transcript went through the verification process, they changed it for me in the verification column so it is accurate now. I am worried that schools will look down on me for this error and see it as me trying to cover up a grade or not paying attention to detail

I honestly highly doubt that schools will see that it was corrected by VMCAS prior to verification and submission; catching and fixing small errors like that is just one reason why transcript verification exists in the first place. Mistakes happen all the time in this process. You’re fine.

That’s the reason VMCAS verifies transcripts. To make sure there’s not any errors with transcript entry. All the schools get is a PDF of your app. VMCAS doesn’t forward the individual transcripts to them, which is why VMCAS has to verify them before they can send your app to schools. If it was some kind of larger/more major error they found, they’d kick the app back to you to fix. Since they didn’t, you’re fine!!

Being able to speak Spanish is an extremely valuable asset in vet med and you should be proud of that! This summer I went to Costa Rica on a research trip and I believe one of the contributing factors for me getting selected was my bilingualism. One of the professors on the trip (she works at Western and used to teach at Oregon State) said she very very frequently uses her Spanish on clinics and that it opens up a lot more job opportunities to be able to speak Spanish. I wouldn't be afraid to list it on the app (although I am not sure I did?). I would never expect someone to start speaking in Spanish to "test" you. They know we are already so stressed as it is and that would just be cruel.

I cited my sources at the end of mine since I used sources and did research. They give you an extremely high character allowance so you don’t have to worry about taking up valuable space for that.
They gave us a 9999 character limit... do they expect us to use most of that because I am struggling.

Nope! It’s just so you don’t have to worry about cutting your essay down and have to worry about character counting for your citations. I think 9999 is probably just the highest amount that they are allowed to give you on VMCAS.

Okay! I just get nervous because I don't want to overstate my abilities, but I also do plan on continuing to study Spanish and grow in my abilities to use it especially in this field. That makes it reasonable to put right? I was able to get around a town where no one spoke any English with little to no issues by the end of the trip.

Hi everyone! My question is in regards to residency.
I am a Florida resident with all of my documents (drivers license, vehicle registration, voters registration) and a 12 month lease from may 2018 to may 2019.... but, I moved to Colorado to spend the next nine months there for fun and work. None of my documents will be changed. Do you think that will be a problem for applying for in-state residency at UF?

Absolutely. 🙂

I will also mention that at least some schools offer a Spanish for Veterinarians elective course (or something similar) that you can take; I took it at Iowa State while I was still there. A lot of it was honestly review but it was nice to have a refresher from earlier classes and experiences in majority Spanish speaking populations.

I did not put an end date for current experiences. VMCAS appears to organize experiences by the start date regardless if it’s a current experience or not.

3. Can I verify my VMCAS app even if I'm still waiting on one LOR?

Yes, I submitted with 1 still pending.

In general, if you aren't changing things like your driver's license and stuff like that, you keep the residency of the state you're from. I lived in NE for nearly a year, but was still considered a CO resident because I didn't change any documents.

However, I would double check with UF to be absolutely sure because different institutions treat residency differently.

How do deadlines for LORs work? I know you can submit with some pending. Also ideally what's the latest you want to submit by to avoid any mistakes?

In case anyone was curious about turn around time right now— I submitted late Monday night and was verified this morning (Thursday). Best of luck to everyone!

Argh, I submitted at the same time but I’m not verified yet. Did you get an email?
(I have 240 credits so I suspect it’ll be a bit longer for me)

Yes, they emailed me and also said their GPA calculations would be available within the hour. I have 3 transcripts with around 200 credits. They received them in May, so I'm not sure if that made a difference. I'm sure your email is coming soon!

Thanks! I had 6 transcripts and also sent them in May. Hopefully I’m verified soon too! 🙂
