Thought I would start this thread for people who have been wait listed. I got wait listed at NYU on 1/23. Does anyone know much about the process? It's one of my top choices but deposits are due soon at other schools and I don't know what the chances are. Anyone have any input especially about NYU?

Accepted: GW, BU (merit scholarship), UCONN, Northeastern
Rejected: Yale, Columbia (MS), UMD
Waitlisted: NYU

Hey, I feel your pain - I have three waitlist decisions...ugh!

It will depend on the school but most seem to re-review the applicant pool of waitlistees after their deposit due dates (most around mid-April), which sucks if you're like me and will make the deposit but still want to hold out hope of getting off the waitlist. I've heard it's not uncommon for the adcoms to try to match profiles of students on the waitlists with what they're lacking from the regular pool. So say they admitted a first generation minority student to an epi program, but that student decides to go elsewhere, they may look for someone with a similar background, rather than re-weighing all the individual waitlistees against one another.

The thing to keep in mind with MPH/MHA degrees is that there is a high rate of students that applied to multiple universities and got into multiple universities. This means that there's a much better chance of getting off the waitlist than for say undergrad programs, MBAs, etc. Unfortunately, it also means we're likely waiting till May - at the earliest - before we hear anything.

Hi There,

I was waitlisted at the University of Washington as well...some of your comments were pretty helpful in terms of trying to predict a timeline...

There was another post on here somewhere where a student discussed how they were successful in getting accepted after getting waitlisted: essentially, they said that they contacted faculty again, re-stated their purpose, goals, background, etc, via e-mail and phone. It never hurts to make personal contact - it isn't pestering if you truly want something, and are clear, honest, and respectful about why you want it. Best of luck to both of you!

In my experience last year, waitlist = agonizingly slow rejection.

Go to a school that wants you to come, not one that lets you in because their first choice declined.

I was waitlisted at University of Washington as well.

I was waitlisted at Emory and eventually got accepted in about 2 months so it is very possible to make it off of the list

After being waitlisted NYU asked us to send a letter basically re-stating everything. Do you think it is rude to email admissions to ask about a timeline? I have to decide by April 15th for other schools and although BU is looking to be my top choice, I would still like to know from NYU but understand that they usually don't notify waitlisted students until after then. Got to love this process...

I don't think it's rude to email... it rarely hurts to ask. That being said, I think - as you indicated - it's almost pointless because it's almost guaranteed you will not hear about waitlist decisions at any school before April 15th.
