Waiting for UCLA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I posted this in the other UCLA thread, but I think it's of interest in this one too:

i don't know exactly how many acceptances are left, but i called today and was told that the class is NOT full. I was also told that they are not done interviewing, and that they will continue to interview applicants until the admissions committee decides that they are finally done.

I also asked if I would hear a decision before May 15, and she said she "hopes so." 😡

So, this batch (4/19) was only waitlists with a few rejections tossed in, right??

Master procrastinators. For those of us without a final decision yet, I just called and they've now pushed the "hear-by" date back to the "first two weeks" of May rather than just the first week. 🙄

hey guys, I remember looking at 2001 USnews ranking website, and it said that UCLA accepted ~208 students to fill 122 spots. I believe the 208 acceptances include accepts from the waitlist.

Also, the monotone guy told me that UCLA will mail out ALL decisions by 5/15.

I have never talked to anyone as uncaring as the ucla admissions personnel. they should show some compassion.

I agree that they are rude, but come on, they must get hundreds of calls a day, all asking the same things. If I was in their shoes, it would be tough to be entirely polite to everyone. They seemed nice when I talked to them in person, so I'll cut them some slack.

I've called schools that get as many applications (e.g. UCSD) and also out-of-state schools and they are no where as shallow and un-informative as UCLA.

Does anybody know how many acceptances they've sent out so far?

jmejia,
Good point, but I was just trying to look on the bright side. More people probably call UCLA though, b/c it seems to be everyone's first choice at this point.

The problem I see with the UCLA Admissions Office is that the personnel (specifically, the monotone dude) is not informed of the status of most of our files up-to-date by the committee so he gets lots of blames for not giving consistent answers, which is in fact not his fault. On the other hand, most of applicants' calls at UCSD are handled by Linda who's the director of Admissions so she knows exactly what goes on with the admissions. My $0.02.

I agree Patiently Waiting. Monotone dude really doesn't know jack. He's just the receptionist. I don't think any of us need to be calling UCLA anymore because I can guarantee that we will not be getting any new information.

For those of us who haven't received a decision letter yet: Even when our status changes, we don't even need to call when that happens to try to find out what the decision is. As past experience has shown, they definitely will not tell us.

that's unfortunate so many of you have had bad experiences 🙁

i guess i was lucky, they were extremely nice when i was there interviewing, and also rather nice on the phone.

i agree tho that the ucsd -- especially yvonne! -- adm office is fantastic

Well, at least the guy told you some kind of date. When I called he just said that he can't predict when the next batch will be coming out. If thousands of people are calling UCLA each day, they could at least make sure that the person who is answering the phone for those thousands of applicants knows what's going on. It seems really unprofessional to not have your staff abreast of what is happening!! I'm irritated.

zealous and patiently waiting, I sent you guys both PMs. 🙂

maybe i will have better luck on this thread

Am I the ONLY person waiting for UCLA for an INTERVIEW... (no rejection yet!)

they interview about 610 people, a number of them are accepted already...an only a certain proportion are stressed out enought to call on a given day. Probably they get 30 or so calls a day, which is still a lot...

When did you fill out the secondary? If they requested very recently, there's hope for an interview. If you've been waiting for several months since the submission of your secondary, it's not a good sign.

I wish the search engine's up and running...there was a thread about the last days of interviews for different schools.

Good luck!

I submitted a secondary at the end of March.. that was a month ago! Think all hope is gone? Do you think I should write a love letter. Will it do any good at this point?

Brentwoodboy,

At this point, there's nothing for you to lose by sending a letter. Why not send another update letter that reaffirms your strong interest in their school?? Also, it would be helpful if you briefly describe your current appl status in the first paragraph of your letter followed by some new information that may be more of an eye-catch (in a positive way of course). Regardless of the outcome, at least you would know that you have tried your best.

Is it a no-no to email this letter given how late it is in the game (maybe to the dean or something?)

Thanks for all the advice

I don't think UCLA's very response to emails. Write a letter addressed to Dr. Neil Parker and mail it out SOON!!! BTW, how are your stats? You don't have to post it if you feel uncomfortable. The reason I ask is that one of the MS-1 students I met did an appeal to Dr. Parker after the preinterview rejection and got her file re-reviewed by him, subsequently got an interview invite and are now a happy student at UCLA. IMHO, her stats caught Dr. Parker's attention at the time of re-reviewing. I'm sure her ECs were quite solid too.

Brentwood boy and Caliboy (all these boys  ),

I sent you PMs.

I'm not sure how many of you saw this but it is a post from "grower" on the medicalgold website. This is in response to a question about how the UCLA waitlist works:

"There are two unranked wait-lists. Chance of acceptance from the first is high, from the second, uncertain. In August, UCLA attempts to provide detailed information. It is useful to submit new information and helpful to indicate ongoing interest during the summer. Greatest movement: usually July. After June 15 about half the (first?) wait-list is accepted."

My next comment is - they provide detail info in AUGUST?!? I guess this process will never end.

Is there any way we can find out which of the two waitlists we are on?

•••quote:•••Originally posted by GeoffDevil:
•My next comment is - they provide detail info in AUGUST?!? I guess this process will never end.•••••I'm not too sure about the August date because orientation is August 5th, so I'm assuming that most of the class will be filled by August.

How do they determine who is in what waitlist? Is it first come first serve?

bomback, man, you med-school-applying stud, what do i have to give ya to get your spot? do you need a spare kidney? how about my parents' house? i'll even throw in my sister -- she's fantastic and quite pretty

(just kidding about that last one!)

Anyone have a guess as to how many more acceptances they will be giving out??

i think the best anyone could do would be to guess, which isn't too useful...

I am trying to guess what will come in the mail tomorrow, as i haven't yet received my 4/19 letter!!!
the suspense is killing me, but at least I have the last exam of my undergraduate career  to distract me.

viral pathogenesis and host defence!! argg boring!

anyway, i'm done ranting and padding... maybe i'll see some of you next year... or not

:^)

I posted this earlier but I thought it needed to be asked again. Does anyone know how they decide who is on which waitlist? Is it first come first serve? Or is it a way of ranking waitlistees without assigning them a rank #?

I posted a question on the Medicalgold.com premedical question board and got the following responses from Gower. I'd like to think that all of us on the waiting list still have a good chance to get in!!!

Q)I've been told (by someone on this board) that UCLA has two kinds of waitlist, one having a greater movement than the other.

A) This is true! Chances from the A list are usually high, from the B list uncertain.

Q)how can I find out which of the two waitlists I'm on so that I can proceed with an alternative if I have a slim chance for an acceptance?

A)In August UCLA attempt to provide detailed information on prospects. It is helpful to submit any new information and periodically to indicate ongoing interest during the summer.

Greatest movement: July. After June 15, as many as half the wait-list is accepted.

Conclusion: Assume the best outcome but if you have another acceptance, hold on to it. Give YOURSELF a deadline beyond which you will not shift even if UCLA offers you a place. It is not like changing seats at a movie theater or late in a ball game. You must be making arrangments of all kinds enough in advance of starting medical school: housing, books, etc. You can't (well, yes, you can, but I think it not advisable) just to show up on the day before or the day classes begin.

Another Q: how many applicants does UCLA offer waitlist positions?

A)I don't have that information.

Q) Please provide me with everything you know about the UCLA waitlist.

A)What you read above is what you get; I don't know more.

: : Just adding another question. 🙂 Are extra letters of recommendation from professors detailing the past year considered, or only "love letters" from the student?

A)I would submit extra MEANINGFUL letters. If they don't want to read them, they don't have to.

Ok, so there is one more big batch comin out this or next week. anyone anxious? do you think there will be acceptances in there? there were no 4/19 acceptances were there?

You know..I appealed my UCLA pre interview rejection about 3 months ago!!!

And STILL no word back from them!!! GRRRRRRRRR!!!

That really pisses me off..oh well..screw them...I'm going to CU instead!

{{{Unless by chance UCLA wants me 🙂 }}}}

chef: oooh that's nasty. That's scary that I live within a .5 mile radius of that toxic dump.

Shakmadeek: how did you hear another batch was coming this/next week? And yes, as far as I know, there were no acceptances from the 4/19 mailing.

{{{Unless by chance UCLA wants me 🙂 }}}}•••••Have you called recently to inquire about your appeal? Whom did you send a letter to? My student host wrote an appeal letter to Dr. Parker in April last year and subsequently got in.

BTW, CU's a great school...it will be fun to chill in the center of culture for four years (or more).

Still...waiting.....Bump!

seems like this thread will be pretty slow until the first of us go... OMG OMG OMG OMG, UCLA CALLED ME, I'M IN I'M IN I'M IN!!!!!!!

and everybody goes... YAY, i'm so happy for you!!!!!! congratulations... and they're thinking, dang, that lucky son of a gun! i'm happy for him but so jealous!
🙂

I'm happy for Matthew, but so jealous.

Yeah, either til zealous, caliboy, et.al. start receiving post-interview decisions OR til we on the waitlist begin hearing something else, this thread's gonna move slowly.

all of you guys and gals waitlisted or waiting to hear from UCLA have been accepted elsewhere right? Where would you go if UCLA shows no love?

Also, has UCLA med ever been ranked top 10 by USnews?

Since a lot of u guys are already in Los Angeles, lemme ask another q:
Is LA a good place to play GOLF as a poor med student? I know there are some superb courses right around UCLA, most notably Riviera CC, Bel Air CC, Wilshire CC, and Los Angeles CC but they are all private and cost $200/round!!
Are there some decent public courses around? How crowded are they? I'm guessing since it's always warm everyone and their dogs in LA would play golf and thus all the public golf courses must be in terrible shape and getting a teetime is tougher than winning a lottery. Thanks for help golf nuts out there!

There is some excellent golf for cheap just a little south in Long Beach.

There is some excellent golf for cheap just a little south in Long Beach, but it is always crowded. SoCal golf doesn't seem to be nearly as good as it is in NorCal.
