Waiting for UCLA

•Okay, well I was getting a little excited considering that my letter was sent out on the same day with all the acceptances. However, now that GrnLt has gotten a waitlist on that day now I'm not so happy. Yesterday, I found myself figuring out how I was going to tell my boyfriend and parents that I got into UCLA. I was doing this so much yesterday that I forgot that I haven't even received an acceptance letter yet. I was in my own little invented reality. GrnLt's news was enough to put my butt back down and smack me around a little. I'm trying to stay optimistic but the longer I have to wait, the more I think about what I'm going to read when I open up that thin white envelope. This is torture!!! 😛 If only someone could hit me over the head so when I come to, all of this would be over.•••••I feel the same way. I was thinking that my letter would be an acceptance and now I'm having doubts.

Sorry for the dissappointing news guys. Trust me, I wish things were different. But if anything, u guys still have hope.
Ha Ha...maybe I should call the admissions office and notify them that all the other letters sent on may 16th have been acceptances, and they must have sent me the wrong letter. I'll be forgiving though and be happy to accept their offer of acceptance on the phone. haha
Ok, i need to stop dreaming. If only it were that easy.

Ceez and GrnLt, when did you guys interview? I know that a lot of people who just received acceptances have been waiting for a while. Thanks.

I'm crossing fingers for you guys... I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully you should get your letters today!! Please let us know as soon as you find out.

strokchik

I am wondering if you heard back yet. I think I interviewed with the same guy you did. I am curious to know the status of your application.

It also depends on your interviewers because if you have your file chosen for review at a committee meeting and your interviewer is not there then you just get pushed back because they can't review your file without them being there.•••••That's true, bomback, but I don't think it applies in my case, since I know that my interviewer goes to ALL of the meetings...You may have heard of him. He's the nice ob/gyn guy who's been around forever.•••••

I interviewed early May. So I haven't been waiting that long at all. Good luck!

Ceez,
I don't know if it just hasn't come or if the mailman hasn't come for today. I actually just checked my mailbox not even three minutes ago. 😡

I can't seem to find the school start date thread... Does ne1 know when UCLA begins classes? I remember reading it was about the first week of August.
Which if that is true... would work awesome for me. That way I can wait out the waitlist all through up till then, and if I don't get it, I'll have a whole month to prepare for San Diego re: housing and stuff (UCSD starts on 9/3, 9/9).

Miss Medicine,

I did hear back. I was waitlisted in April. I guess it wasn't enough that I waited from November until April to hear.

well, i just got my UCLA letter...

Keep your chin up and welcome to the David Geffen School of Medicine Waitlist Club!! 😀 😀 Ok, that wasn't much comforting. Really, the lady told me last week that they've placed just 100 of us on the waitlist, ie. there must have been at least about 200 or so who got downright rejected post-interview. At least we've made the first round of cut.

yep. welcome to the club, man

hey patiently waiting, you know how you say that 200 people got rejected postintervie and 100 got waitlisted. That's weird that pretty much every1 on SDN got waitlisted. Coincidence? Hehe.

I know that UCLA has traditionally interviewed about 600 applicants, 150-200 of which are granted immediate acceptance and then about ~100 get waitlisted... I didn't know what to do with the remaining "ambiguous" 100--probably either become waitlisted or rejected ultimately.

Well guys, no good news here either.....WAITLIST 🙁 Looks like us Bay Area people(Patiently, Ceez and me) will all be waiting and hoping Hopkins, UCSF and others hurry up and accept people on their waiting list so they'll open up spots for us. Honestly, I was really getting my hopes up really high with all of those acceptances and now I'm back on the ground again. No, I'm under it, I'm so hurt. My mind was telling me, it's good news, it's good news but don't get excited. So, my mind pretty much accepts this waitlist and realizes that I should accept the fact that I won't get in. However, my heart was really hoping for this and I can't tell you how much this waitlist hurts my heart. I know you guys are saying that a lot of people get taken off of the waitlist but I don't think that my heart can handle any more disappointments. It's just too much. 🙁 Well....I don't know what else to say except good luck to everyone. CaliBoy, have an awesome time at UCLA for me.

Zealous,

I know how you feel as I am on the waitlist too, but your e-mail makes me sad. Just hang in there...this process is not supposed to be easy, and you gotta maintain hope. If you can update your application or have some professor/ boss/ mentor write another letter of support, then it might go to strengthen your app once it goes to review.

I have not read that many previous SDN posts, but have you been accepted elsewhere?

Hang in there. You are not alone--that might not make you feel a whole lot better, but from what I have heard UCLA does tend to take quite a few off the waitlist.

zealous,
honestly, i feel your pain. i too was waitlisted at ucla...but, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! I know it's is a very disheartening feeling, but my suggestion is to go to the gym a whole lot, work hard at whatever you're doing, and hopefully things will work out. 🙂 i hope you aren't feeling too bad and hope that your dreams of going to med school come true 🙂

Encee,
No..I have no other acceptances. Just a post-interview hold at UCD. Things aren't looking too good for me right now. So, I'm trying to keep hope but it's really hard given my situation. Everything is just so random. I didn't even get an interview at UCI but am on the waitlist for UCLA. It's madness and it's starting to drive me mad. I'm going to try to send in an update/interest letter really soon. For accepting my waitlist poisition, do I write it to Dr. Parker or the admissions committee? Thanks. Good luck to you!!

zealous:

I would say to address the letter to Dr. Parker & the adcom.

I wish you the best.

The helplessness is agonizing, but don't give up.
To be considered highly by UC med schools means that you are a qualified candidate. Hopefully they will see how qualified you are sooner rather than later.

Just re-stating what some others have said--there might not be much waitlist movement within the upcoming weeks--it depends on how quickly they review waitlistees' files, and it sounds like UCLA is still interviewing.

So, let them know how enthusiastic you feel about their school, and that is the best you can do for now!

How did your interview with him go? It's hard to imagine this guy having a bad interview with anyone... He was so nice. Did he say anything to you at the end that was encouraging? I am trying to figure out if he just says that to everyone.

Anyway, thanks.... how come you dont accept pms?

Zealous and ceez,

oh man oh man I'm so sorry to hear about the waitlists. I was genuinely hoping that we were all going to be receiving acceptances.

But there is a bright side of course: you are still in the game. Elsewhere in this thread, someone posted that UCLA typically accepts about 50% of the waitlist by the middle of June!! (Although they are behind this year, so perhaps by July). Nonetheless, thats a he1l of alot of acceptances!! Don't give up hope. Be SURE to write update letters or a Letter of INTENT. I think they do take them seriously.

You can also e-mail the director of admissions Lilli Fobert with questions, or you can even go see her in the admissions office if you are ever in the LA area. She is extremely friendly, will give you alot of information, and is good with names.

I wish you the best of luck guys. Keep hanging in there. Please keep me posted with any developments!! If all goes well, we still will be classmates in August.

Caliboy,

congrats again on your acceptance!

about that 50% off the waitlist... Really??? Man. That would be awesome, but it sounds a little too good to be true 😀

Thanks Matthew. Here is the info that I was quoting. I sure hope that it is true!! It comes from Gower on medicalgold.com, who seems to know what he is talking about.

Good luck!

•I'm not sure how many of you saw this but it is a post from "grower" on the medicalgold website. This is in response to a question about how the UCLA waitlist works:

"There are two unranked wait-lists. Chance of acceptance from the first is high, from the second, uncertain. In August, UCLA attempts to provide detailed information. It is useful to submit new information and helpful to indicate ongoing interest during the summer. Greatest movement: usually July. After June 15 about half the (first?) wait-list is accepted."

My next comment is - they provide detail info in AUGUST?!? I guess this process will never end.•••••

Oh okay, cool. Well, we'll see, I guess... Are you 100% set on UCLA? Man, I'd love to be your classmate.

Miss Medicine,

You're definitely right about the old fella. He was so sweet, but I can't imagine him being any other way to anyone. I emailed him recently and asked for some advice, but he wasn't of much help. Also, I see him in the halls a lot since I work at UCLA, so we chit chat every so often. But I don't think he has much more info after he attends the meeting and talks about you.

Sit tight, though. You just interviewed recently. I waited 6 months after my interview for any response.

About the PMs, I just changed my profile. I didn't realize that I said no for that option.

Wow. I was really hoping the process would be over by now. Now I guess I better get started on my letter of intent.

But the biggest thing that sucks it that I'm going to have to go ahead with the 2003 AMCAS 🙁

*takes swig of tequila*

hello all

i had just managed to forget about being on the ucla waitlist, and then reading all these posts revived my hope, then dashed it, then revived it again. curse you ucla!
anyway i just wanted to show my solidarity with all the bay area waitlistees out there. I never thought the med school admissions thing could get me feeling this low. i think it's high time the adcom added an extra 100 seats to the class, effective immediately. who's with me?

hey amp,
i'm with you! should we call right now to make our suggestion? it's funny how reading all the posts on sdn sometimes make me so so happy (when you hear about someone gettin in), but some other times they increase my stress or make me really depressed, since it seems like everyone is getting news except me. 🙁
My file at UCLA is "still with the committee", so no final decision yet.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I am a member of the Bay Area Waitlisted at UCLA Club too. I love it!

Does anyone know for sure if UCLA reviews your transcript before making a final decision? I think that might explain why it took so long for many to hear from UCLA post-interview.

I was previously waiting for UCSF, but I recently found out that I'm on the 2nd half of the alternate list--basically I'm rejected. I'm waiting on one more list right now, but I doubt it will pan out.

As far as this process making me feel low, for me it's been so hard to remain positive. With 3 waitlists and zero acceptances, it's becoming increasingly hard to not feel like crap. Hopefully, good news awaits us!

Amp and Barb,

I'm also a member of the Bay Area Waitlist Club. I will keep my fingers crossed for all of us to hear good news soon. I don't even care at this point if I hear from UCLA on the day of the orientation. I'm going if they take me!!!! I will just camp out on the street or in one of the medical center parking structures for a few days before finding a place to live.

I'm with you there, patiently. I'm going to put that down payment on a double-wide and have it delivered to the hospital courtyard or something. Convenience and fine living at the doorstep of the academic universe.
Really though, I think I've made my decision. If UCLA calls me, I'm there. No place to live or plan on how to pay for the damn school, but I'm there.

Did you waitlisted people write your letters of intent yet?

Is anybody else still waiting to hear from UCLA post interview? I'm still waiting for the letter sent "5/17" I'm on the east coast and the wait is agonizing.

i am still waiting to hear from them post interview... everytime i go to the office they tell me that the file is still with the committee... 🙁

Ceez,
You got waitlisted at LA and didn't get in elsewhere?
I was just wondering because you said you were going to do the 2003 AMCAS.
That is too bad. If the waitlist doesn't work out, I am sure you will get in somewhere next year.

On another note; this is probably redundant to other threads, but many of them are out of date, or degenerate in to useless pissing matches:
What other schools are you guys condsidering? Mostly other UCs?
I assume many people are looking at UCSD, UCI, perhaps a few davises.

I will go to Irvine if i don't get into LA.

I want to get an idea of who my future classmates may or may not be 🙂

they sent a "notice of non-acceptance" on january 4th (i sent in the secondary in early december) and the funny thing is that i never received the rejection; i only found out by calling...

Woo.. Hoo...I'm the 400th post. One question, should I address my waitlist acceptance letter to Dr. Parker as:
1) Mr. Neil H. Parker M.D. or
2) Neil H. Parker M.D.

I know it's anal but let me know. Thanks.

You probably want to avoid "Mr."
I think it's taboo to use both "Dr." and "M.D." at the same time. You might want to put name, MD on the envelope and then "Dear Dr. Soandso" in the letter
