Is anyone asking for a file review for schools they are waitlisted at?
I know for sure I'm going to do my IS, I'll probably call them next week. Not sure about the OOS ones yet.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to utilize my summer in case I don't get accepted.

Word of advice: Do not stop trying to improve your application/yourself until the second you are accepted. Your path to veterinary school shouldn't have hit a pause once you hit submit on VMCAS. The best reapplicants would have probably kept all current opportunities ongoing and actively sought out whatever new experiences they felt they needed (even before they received rejections/waitlists). You can't always predict what will happen, so it's best to be prepared.Same. It seems somewhat unfair that a lot of schools won't offer a review until after the 15th. The application opens less than 2 months after that and closes in 5 months from that date. While that does give time to improve on weaknesses, it makes it unnecessarily difficult for some things like jobs/shadowing/research/raising a GPA/summer plans in general.

I applied for jobs and internships before I heard back from 3/5 of my schools my first try. Good thing I did, because otherwise I probably would have had to apply a third time. Had I waited, I would not have been offered the internship I got.
Mizzou won't give me anything until May, and I can't get anything from Illinois until at least April. I'm planning on applying to a bunch of jobs now, and see if I can stay longer if I don't get in, depending on where I get a job. My guess is I'd be better with more experience, not sure how much I can do to help my GPA since I've already graduated, I doubt one or two more classes at a community college will give me much of a boost.I'm trying to figure out the best way to utilize my summer in case I don't get accepted.

Huh, I actually never thought of that, good to know! I didn't do great in chemistry, so that may be my problem too.My C's in two pre-req classes (biochem and general chem) were part of why I was rejected. WSU looks at those classes specifically as indicators of academic potential, and I was strongly encouraged to retake them before I apply again. I have not idea what your gpa or pre-req grades look like, but there could be a class or two that would be worthwhile to retake.
If I don't get in this year I was planning on repeating biochem and genetics since I got Cs in those two pre reqs but had questions as to if it was useful even after you have already graduated since it will not boost my degree gpa. This adds some closure, to know that it is worth it. Most schools only average the two grades though in repeated courses so did they say it really does help post your application? My C's in two pre-req classes (biochem and general chem) were part of why I was rejected. I'm definitely going to have to check which schools average them, I didn't know that eitherMost schools only average the two grades though in repeated courses....
I know off the top of my head Iowa and Illinois average the two grades.I'm definitely going to have to check which schools average them, I didn't know that either
That's good to know! Do you know any other schools who do this?WSU takes the better grade. So for me, retaking those classes would significantly increase my pre-req GPA and make my application more competitive than I was this year.
You need to do the research, honestly. You can buy that VMSAR book (although I'm not positive if it details anything but basic school info and pre-reqs), but most of us spend hours thoroughly looking into the schools we're interested in. That's how you find the best fit for you and what you have to offer. That's good to know! Do you know any other schools who do this?
I'm pretty sure there was such a section when I applied (in 2012). No idea about nowadays.Did you guys have hobbies/interests and community/extracurricular sections of your VMCAS application? Because I'm about 90% sure I don't. I've looked through that stupid thing hundreds of times.
According to Mizzou there should be. From my end it doesn't exist, from their end it looks like I just skipped them and have no life outside of vet medI'm pretty sure there was such a section when I applied (in 2012). No idea about nowadays.

I have spent many hours looking into schools as well.. I was just asking if anyone knew first hand. But thanks for your input. You need to do the research, honestly. Yes. They are supposed to replace grades when calculating GPA's. At least, that's been the case for the this cycle and the previous three.I feel like I've seen it somewhere that Ohio also does grade replacement.
Oh hmm, she made it sound like it was another section of the application. I guess Mizzou wants you to fill out an experience type for each, or they take points off? Though she didn't mention the employment section, which I technically didn't have anything in either.Yes, it's under Experiences. There were definitely at least 6 options you could select: animal, veterinary, employment, volunteer, extra curricular, and research.

I've been talking to them for a lot of this morning, and it looks like it's just the drop down menu in experiences like you said, but for some reason Mizzou puts a lot of weight on those sections. I have no idea why, but I guess it dropped down my non-academic score a lot. Though I still got put on the alternate list, and they didn't make any indication that all interviewees get alternate status (Illinois does that), so I have no idea how that happened. Since I'm talking with academic staff and not directly with the admissions committee, their reasons might be a little different. There definitely weren't separate sections as part of the main VMCAS application. Just the experience section where you could classify your experiences as one of those 6 categories. I know they did a major revamp of the VMCAS, but it seems unlikely that they weren't aware of the new set up. Maybe you missed something school specific in the Program Materials section (some of the schools I applied to had questions there while others did not) or in a supplemental app. If you haven't already I would suggest you log into your VMCAS and look at your Experience and the Program Materials sections and see what you have there. If everything looks good, I don't see the harm in calling again and asking for clarification since they told you that you were missing entire sections.
Do you know if Illinois waitlist all applicants as of this year. I have been told in previous years they have but I haven't found any information regarding this cycle if the only accept or alternate not reject.I've been talking to them for a lot of this morning, and it looks like it's just the drop down menu in experiences like you said, but for some reason Mizzou puts a lot of weight on those sections. Yes, everyone who is not accepted is put on the alternate list. No one that interviews will be rejected. Thank you! Unfortunately I was in the very top behind the glass those interview sessions were backed! LolYes, everyone who is not accepted is put on the alternate list. No one that interviews will be rejected. This was said in the info session 🙂
Anyone starting to improve their application in case the wait list doesn't work out? Maybe we can all try and help each other with our stats?

Woot woot!!! Awesome! Doing SA?Yup! Got a job as a vet tech/vet assistant, so that covers the gaping hole in my lack of clinical experience/animal experience. Trying to ramp myself up for the giant GPA spread sheet (looking at my less-than-stellar undergraduate grades will hurt) for calculations and starting to study for the GRE. I'm worried because I'm a non-traditional student about my pre-reqs, some of them are older than 10 years. (physics 1, I hate you still.) I'm worried about what I may need to retake.
Woot woot!!! Awesome! Doing SA?
I retook courses last summer and did very well. I also have less than stunning undergrad grades, but not sure if I can retake lab classes with my work schedule- a girl has got to eat. I have average GRE scores, so perhaps I can retake that too?
I also got a new job! It will add hugely to my research experience so I think that will help. I have lots of LA and SA experience (worked as a LA ICU tech and SA assistant), but I really think it must have been my grades that sunk me. Or maybe I completely blew the MMI? Who knows... Wish I could get a file review. April 15 needs to come quickly!
The good thing is that if you retake prerequisites, it normally boosts not only your prerequisite GPA but also the last 45!

I am working towards boosting my app for next year just in case. Did a file review with Purdue last week and got some tips on how to enhance my applications. I will be taking animal nutrition online and will probably retake my genetics and biochem this summer since those were the two pre-reqs I did poorly on. Looking into getting more research lab experiences but having a hard time now that I am not an undergraduate. Any ideas there? Also may consider taking my GRE again but not sure cause I absolutely hated it lol. My GRE was at the 50%+. Also going to try to get more involved with the community, anyone have any ideas for that. I thought about beach clean ups, and soup kitchen! Also which schools are you guys waiting to hear from?!?Anyone starting to improve their application in case the wait list doesn't work out? Maybe we can all try and help each other with our stats?

Yep I'm emailing anyone possible to see if I can get a vet assistant job for the summer. Technically I've been volunteering at the humane society this semester but their afternoons have been light work so usually I've been sent home early or not called in at all.Anyone starting to improve their application in case the wait list doesn't work out? SA= small animal. Hehe. Wow! Yes I would definitely say penguins count! Yeah I think online courses would be the only way to continue working and to get class done. We should totally be GRE study buddies!SA?
All of my work experience is research with animals (neuroscience, pathology/toxicology) so that's okay. I literally have not worked with live animals, other than mice & rats, up until this march when I started work at the pet clinic. I'm pondering volunteering to get exotics experience. Does holding/handling penguins...
Ah yeah I took an online biochem course last summer. It was through UC Berkeley... Kinda hard since it was mostly self taught, but alas I got the grade I needed. I was looking into research at universities. I actually emailed someone asking if they had any opportunities. I met with them and they offered me a part time job.I am working towards boosting my app for next year just in case. Every one I've talked to so far has just said to email them back closer to summer though, or not responded at all.
Well you already know some of this but...
I know that my GPA was/is on the lower side but it has improved a minuscule amount since I last applied which is at least better than nothing at all. So far I'm not planning to retake any classes because the ones I would need don't seem to be offered at the right time in the right place. Of course I wasn't really sold on spending more money to make small increases on my GPA in the first place unless I really need to but... I probably would at least be registered for something if I could find something that works with my schedule. If I could find an acceptable genetics course online I'd be happy camper because I think retaking that would have the best impact on my GPA.
I applied for that summer program I told you about and am currently waiting to hear back about whether I get admitted to that.
Continuing to increase my veterinary hours. They were very low when I last applied but I've doubled them since then.
And I was recently asked about becoming a member of a new dog club so I'm thinking that's probably a little extra something I can put on my application if it pans out.
Whooo!!! Go Finnick!!!!!

I'm at UIUC right now, talking to their vet med HR department to see if any of their vets are looking for assistants, and also looking around where my mom is located in Mississippi for jobs. Jackson zoo has an internship program, but Mizzou told me I should have more veterinary experience, and I'm not sure they directly work with vets.I have totally been in your shoes! Keep emailing people! Send follow ups! I really wanted something in the LA world, I just love the type of medicine involved! I finally go offered a job that I would not have known about unless I kept emailing my current boss about opportunities. Do worry about being persistent. I always think it's best to have an answer, even if it's a no, than not knowing.
Where are you located? Try job boards like indeed or monster. Beware craigslist. There are some good opportunities on there, and some really bad ones. You want to enjoy the people you are working with and not get treated like slave labor.. Cough cough* (previous experience)

I'm really big into giving back to those in need and helping things for the greater cause. Which is why I thought about beach cleans up, benefits the animals and the ecosystem. When I did my call at Purdue they highly suggested to do community activities none animal related. I was thinking about maybe volunteering as a tutor? It depends on where you're at. I like to pretend that I have a bajillion hours of free time, and would like to continue working with two of my professors through the summer to get secondary authorship again in separate fields. I also want to start volunteering with my local League of Women Voters chapter, because it is such a critical election year. What causes interest you?
