Waitlist movement c/o 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Right now the other option is Mississippi State. Loved the school but the OOS tuition is a little frightening.
At least you got something, be blessed for that. I'm waiting to hear from illinois and florida in terms to waitlist.

I'm hoping to be called off the Western alternate list! Do you know how she likes it there so far? With my luck, if I ever get called off, it'll be just before class starts!

She loves it! I know quite a few people who go there. She really likes the teaching style!

Does anyone know how financial aid works for waitlisted students? I have filled out my FAFSA and have designated schools that I'm waitlisted at. But I'm worried that I will get less financial aid because I'm on the waitlist. I know different schools have different budgets. I have emailed my schools asking about financial aid, but I was wondering if anyone here has any info on this topic?

This is a good question to put in the "estimated costs of vet school" sticky. There's more seasoned students that will frequent that thread more than this one. 🙂

You'll get the government based stuff (Fed and GradPlus) but may miss out on things like the Health Professionals (if you qualify) and school sponsored loans.

That said, I've submitted Penn's individual (Not FAFSA) paperwork for the Perkins and HPSL late every year because my parents own a small business and frequently have extensions for their taxes so I don't have the information required to fill out the paperwork and I have gotten those loans every year except this year (no longer qualify because my sister graduated college).

Do you suggest filling out fasfa is you are waitlisted?

Do you suggest filling out fasfa is you are waitlisted?

Yes.

I mean for me, the state deadline for filling it out was the beginning of this month so it made sense that I really needed to get on it--just in case. I don't know what the deadline is for you and if you might be able to just wait it out but you might as well get it done because it can't hurt.

I was thinking at first that I didn't have to worry about the FAFSA or final transcripts... but then I read about people getting pulled off the waitlist way late in the summer and sometimes even after classes started and I realized that yup, I've got to go through the motions just in case.

EDIT: And orca beat me to it because I rambled on.

I would definitely fill out the FAFSA out asap. I know some schools have deadlines, so I would check. But you can still potentially get loans even after the deadline, though it may be less. I just listed all the schools that I was wait listed at to receive it, just so if I was pulled of, then that is one less thing I would have to fill out/worry about.

Damn I did not know this I haven't even got my tax money back yet lol! Looks like I'm behind then! I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend. If the deadline for the school has past are you allowed to still fill it out? Oh gosh I hope! My two schools are Illinois and Florida, anyone know off the top of their head?

Ps currently freaking out lol

You can still fill it out after the deadline! I don't have any of my tax stuff yet so I used last years info, and you can go back and update at a later date when you have filed your taxes. I'm wait listed at Illinois too and I know they have a deadline. I think it's this month sometime, but I'm not sure if it has past already.

Don't freak out just yet. You can still file it. They're still willing to give you money with a 6% interest rate that they can make more money off of you with.

Okay, sounds good. I didn't think I could fill it out based off of last years information! But thank you this is very helpful! Goodluck at Illinois my fellow waitlister

Ew, let's hope I don't get a higher interest for filing late but it sounds like something that would occur -___-

I don't think that's how it works. The different federal loans have set interest rates (though they might change year to year). When you file does not determine your interest rate.

One of the schools i'm wait listed at gave me a bunch of financial info. They said that when you file doesn't really matter. They just have a deadline so that people won't put it off. They try to have it in March so they can get accepted students a financial aid package before the April 15 deadline. If you fill it out later, it won't affect your loans as long as you do fill it out. But sooner is definitely better than later! Granted this was only one school, but I don't think things really differ all that much between various schools.

Thank you! My plan is to get my taxes and fasfa done this weekend!

When you were reviewing your information, did you notice when using code 001775 for U of I that it wasn't the direct veterinary department? For example it said tuition was 29,646 for OOS. Is this the correct code? I got it off of U of I website.

I'm not sure for UofI but it was showing the undergrad tuition on my report for Purdue, but when I got my actual financial aid package it covers the actual cost of attendence. So I'm sure that's what it is doing for you as well!

exactly! yes, it is showing undergraduate cost. That is okay? It will still reward you the full credit for the veterinary program at the school correct?

Yep exactly! The true tuition will be covered!

Is anyone else struggling to decide how to spend the summer? I'm torn between taking a job where I make good money, but gain no new experience or taking a job with poor pay that offers new experience. If I get into vet school I will be glad I made good money. If I don't, I will be upset that I didn't get new experience to improve my application. I'm pretty high on the wait list, so it is a tough choice.

Yeah, I'm struggling with that too. I'm looking at a lot of things that are probably going to be more volunteer type stuff, so no money vs getting a job, or maybe trying to find some super flexible part-time job. I'm waiting for one of my schools to tell me where I rank on the waitlist since they aren't telling people till the beginning of April. Id like to make those kinds of decisions now, but I think I'm going to wait till I know that at least.

Until you get in I believe you should continue to work towards your application. There is never such a thing as to much experience. You are gonna be in debt anyway going to vet school so what's the extra couple bucks gonna do for you at this point? Or take the well paying job and focus on volunteering in the animal field on weekends or days off. But don't put your life on hold at this point! I know it's hard though, I'm in the same boat. Goodluck guys!

Ps: April is almost here hoping for some good news, the earlier the better!!

I need the "couple extra bucks" to pay for groceries and rent. I cannot take a volunteer position.

In that case its different, i thought you meant to save for tuition. I didnt mean it offensively either I am sorry! But, taking on a job that pays more is a great opportunity, and I am sure can be worked into a positive way for your application if you do need to apply again. Leadership, teamwork skills, ect. It's not all biased on interaction with animals. One of my weakest points this year is that I didn't have experiences outside of Vet-med. So go for it!

I'm wondering.. if there's a good amount of spots available, will schools try to notify waitlisted students before or after the April 15 deadline? I am ranked pretty high for one of the schools I'm waitlisted to, but I'm wondering if I should still fork over the deposit for the school I was actually accepted to.. y'know, just to be safe?

That depends on a couple of things to me.

1) Is this an OOS school with a low cost of attendance? If so, I wouldn't necessarily bet on it since students are more likely to stick with a cheaper school. So even if you are high on the wait list, it might not hit you since fewer people are rejecting their acceptance.

2) When you say high, are you talking 1-15 or 25-35? Both are high (considering that 100ish people are wait listed). But I wouldn't take a chance unless I was top 15 or higher on the list. You'll always have the people who will go to their dream school over saving money, the people who get accepted to their IS, and the people who defer, but you have no guarantee that will be a high percentage of people.

If I were you, I would send in the deposit, just to be sure you had a spot in a school. Sure, you'd be out of the 500-1000 bucks, but if you don't and you also aren't pulled from the wait list, you are then out of an acceptance, the effort of the application, and all the money you put in the application (which is between 500 and 1000 bucks at least), and then all the money, time, and effort you'll have to spend on the next application cycle where you might not get an acceptance.

There's always a small chance that a school will give out a seat before April 15th, but this is a very, very slim chance. It sucks to lose deposit money, but at this point that's the better plan than waiting to see if you get pulled off the waitlist and then not be accepted at all.

Im wait listed at UF (IS) and accepted my position at Auburn for now. Tuition at Auburn isn't actually too bad, $44,000 a year vs $29,000 at UF isn't all that big of a difference. Better than $54,000+ at some schools OOS. But still waiting to hear from UF because it is still cheaper, though honestly Im insanely excited for Auburn because I loved it way more than UF. Facilities were way nicer and the people were so friendly. Anyone know though how much the IS list at Florida moves? I know 2 people IS declining seats so at least theres a tiny chance lol

Its like $15000 ... 33% more. The things we tell ourselves to justify tuition 🙂 Not that I'm calling you out, UF is my IS and Auburn is definitely my second choice. Congrats on the acceptance. I haven't been to Auburn, are the facilities that much nicer even with UF's new small animal hospital?

Haha, I've been crunching numbers for so long. Its a $60,000 difference at the end of 4 year, but would be much more if I accepted my offer at UT or Kansas so I'm happy with my favorite school actually being the cheaper OOS but $$$ talks, id like more in my pocket if i can lol

As for facilities the Auburn small animal hospital was finished now in 2014 I believe. It rivals that of UF and its clear these big schools have set the standard in Small Animal Hospitals. What Auburn also has is a brand new Veterinary Education Center with all new classrooms that was opened in 2012. It looks and feels like a small hotel, pictures don't do it justice. Their Equine facility is also very new (2004) and is absolutely enormous. UF's large animal is big, but dated compared to the new Auburn Facility. I know UF has plans to update theirs but as of right now Auburn's facilities overall are newer/nicer, but the hospitals are comparable in quality, size, etc.

Wow you know two people declining the IS Florida spot! I'm waitlisted at Florida too! I saw one IS accepted Florida applicant decline via SDN as well! I have heard waitlist IS at Florida is limited to none but if 3 IS are declining that means 3 spots are open. I called Florida and asked about the waitlist they do not accept any more IS students than there capacity. So if 88 are available 88 people get offers. So with those 3 declines, 3 waitlisters will get calls! Hope it's us 🙂

I will most likely end up sending in the deposit just for the peace of mind (and you really never know!), but ouch.. it does make me cringe a little knowing I may be losing that much money.:dead:

Aw yeah UF waitlist buddies haha :highfive: Yeah hopefully it is us then! 3 spots we know of so might be more we don't hear of, just wish they would tell us where on the wait list we are. Kinda frustrating, but whatever. Did they say how many people are waitlisted?

I am actually very surprised to even hear 3! She did not tell me how many people are on the waitlist but she did tell me the number is very small, that if they had more room the waitlist applicants would of been admitted. So i will assume somewhere between 10-15?

I feel like with IS waitlist they should, but i doubt it.. When I called she said that it is very rare that you will hear before the 15th unless multiple people decline. With IS they have the ensure a certain number you know? Did your friends already decline their spot?

Well they are just other members of the prevet society, not close friends so don't know if they have yet or not but i know they have accepted other offers. UC Davis and Ohio State.

I havent seen many people on threads in general really "decline" their seat. Do you have to or do you just not send in a deposit. I mean the right thing to do is decline it of course but it states that if there isn't a deposit received the offer basically declines itself.

I was accepted to K State but gave up my seat for my in state school! Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back! April 15th will be here before you know it!

This is exactly what I did. I'm working as a SA vet assistant/vet tech (Still not entirely sure about the differences in NC), whereas I could make a decent living returning back to research because I have plenty of lab experience. It's not that I don't love lab work, I just see the ceiling and I'm not happy with it. Too many people I know put in 10+ years into research with a bachelor's degree and still, they're frustrated with the lack of impact they have on projects.

So yeah. Current debate is "Do I go for a post-bach program?" because some of my pre-reqs are expired according to some schools, even though physics was one of the first breakthrough application moments I had on the job.

I know some places only consider you a tech if your licensed and assistant if your not. I worked as a Career technician in one job although I was unlicensed- I got very specific training for the job. But my position after that when I moved states was only considered an assistant. I toyed around with the licensing but I just really want to go to vet school.
I am now working two jobs in exactly the field I want to go into. One of which will give me a bit more research experience too. 🙂 hoping for a stronger application this coming cycle.

That's the part that confuses me - some states require techs to be licensed? Somehow this translates to techs can only do certain things that vet assistants can't? North Carolina doesn't appear to be one of those states, because I'm learning everything from intake to monitoring anesthesia. (I don't gross out easily, unless it's my own blood and guts. Then I reserve the right to have full blown hysterics.) I'm in the same boat, I just want to go to vet school.

Same. I worked as an unlicensed tech for going on 3 years now. The on-the-job training was invaluable and will really help your application.

Does anyone know of anyone declining their IS spot at A&M?
