Good afternoon SDN,

I just received my MCAT score today from 3/20 and wanted some honest feedback on my current application that I am curating for EY2027. Thank you so much in advance!

1. cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or AACOMAS

- cGPA: 3.79
- sGPA: 3.59

2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown. Include all (non-voided) attempts.

- 507 (127/125/127/128)

My previous two full length exams (FL4/FL5) were 510 and 509, respectively. This score is quite indicative of my cumulative FL averages among all testing services.

3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)

- Texas

4. Ethnicity and/or race

- Asian male

5. Undergraduate institution or category

- The University of Texas at Austin, Bachelor of Science in Public Health

I learned so many great things about the public health and the political side of medicine, but my interest remains with the physician-patient relationship, with my most recent clinical role confirming this. I dive into my motivation as well through my personal statement as well, with the theme revolving around patient empathy, advocation, and overall resilience as I go down this path.

6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)

- 1000 hours as a medical assistant at an internal medicine clinic
- 125 hours as an emergency room volunteer at a large hospital
- 150 hours as a virtual medical scribe (during peak COVID time)

7. Research experience and productivity

- 400 hours as a Research Fellow/Mentor in my college laboratory, focused on neurodegenerative diseases. Full transparency, I do not think this has much of an impact on me personally. I would love to get another research job, based on something that I am interested in, during the time of my application and the year afterwards.

- 100 hours as a Research Assistant in a Health Behavior Institute, focused on social work and mental health, mainly administrative work

8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented

- 30 hours of shadowing Internal Medicine
- 10 hours of shadowing Allergy/Hormone clinic. Looking to get more experiences in GI and Cardiology...
- 78 hours of virtual shadowing various specialties

9. Non-clinical volunteering

- 300 hours of student organization volunteering, including fundraising, venue and activity rentals, etc.
- 100 hours as a clinical front desk volunteer coordinator in an underserved area
- ONGOING: 150+ hours of Ronald McDonald House volunteering in the kitchen staff. I have absolutely loved this experience and HIGHLY recommend anyone who is looking into it to at least give it a shot. It has been worth the long commute back and forth... the stories I hear from here and my personal connections I have made with so many individuals have made this such an impactful opportunity.

10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)

- 4000+ hours of working as a consultant at a large tech company. As someone who grew up with a stutter, I was extremely shy at first. Ended up being one of the top performers, but found myself hating it shortly. I gained lots of great skills in networking/organization, but was not fulfilled at the end.
- 100+ hours organizing philanthropic talent show, raising over $5k in donations, shirt sales, and tickets
- Vice President of Finance, Productions Director, Recruitment Leader, Academic Chair in previous student organizations
- Fantasy football enthusiast, 2 time champion
- Avid National Park lover, been to over 30... won't stop!
- Getting into golf

11. Relevant honors or awards

- Eagle Scout
- University Honors for four semesters

TMDSAS: I will be applying to ALL Texas MD/DO schools, and understand the 10th-90th range that I should be applying in accordance to.

AMCAS: low-mid tier MD schools and higher tier DO schools... not too sure about these, but please advise.

Good afternoon - sorry, not sure how I missed this. Thank you for your response!

I have watched and attended some webinars regarding best practices with the application process. Still some things that I need to learn, such as optimizing the activities section.

I grew up in the DFW area, yearly trips to Galveston (UTMB area)

Public Health is a great field and UT Austin had a great program and professors. I enjoyed learning about the policy making, health promotion/prevention side of things, but I never was captivated by it, as I far enjoyed the personal connections that I could get from working with people. I see medicine as a career where my path is well-defined and secure, which is something that I greatly value, as I plan to have a family in the future. Although my research experience is limited, I value the impact of translational research as well, as these ideas are what physicians implement in their practice. In fact, digging into my own personal diagnosis is what brought me back.

Finally, I have had quite a few meaningful family experiences these past couple years where I have been able to see the impact of a doctor when the light at the end of the tunnel seemed dim 🙂.

Most OOS MD schools admit few Texas residents since they know from years of experience that Texas residents will attend a Texas school.
You could try these AMCAS schools:
TCU
Tulane
Roseman
Alice Walton
Belmont
Methodist
Brigham Young (when it opens)

Thank you for your reply to my post, Faha.

I will look into these schools... had no idea about the new ones opening up.

You should also consider DO schools. You have some in TMDSAS, and VCOM expresses a preference for Texas applicants.
Hello, thank you for your response.

I absolutely will consider DO schools in this application process, as I would like to be one and done. I have heard about the VCOM preference, any idea why that is?

No I don’t know but I recently spoke to a VCOM representative to confirm that they are interested in TX applicants and if accepted, you can pay the IS tuition rate at any VCOM campus!
