I will send it out to the class listserves once I get some of the kinks worked out. What do you think, should I make it private so that you have to register to read it? I figure this might entice people to post and contribute rather than just browse like so many do on this forum. On the other hand, it could backfire and mean less people use it.

hmmm... yeah, should probably just make it open for anyone to read. i don't think registering would make me want to post. however, if i read something that i had feelings about then that would make me want to post. if i never had the chance to read it... then i might never post.

Do you think that you guys could register and move some of the convo over there as a test trial? Maybe work on what good forums would be etc.

Way cool...I'm going to register...as the same name as I have here. If people know who I am then that is okay, I don't usually have anything to say that I don't want to take credit for.

Anyone else get Sinai Grace? I looked up the location online (go mapquest) and it's actually not far from me, so I'm not as upset now as I was earlier today... 🙂 Hopefully the docs we're working with don't have terrible accents though! Both of their names are so foreign sounding.

You're assuming.

hey,

last year i said the same thing about setting up a forum to the senate and they said, "it was tried before and no one used it, so we decided against it" they do this at michigan, and a lot of people use it to debate and talk about class issues... more power to you.

Typical WSU mentality, let's shoot something down that costs nothing and requires almost no work. It can't hurt to try it out, worst case scenario people remain lame and don't use it, it's no loss to anybody.

Nice...I'm hoping that it will attract alot of users. I think it would be great for students who stay at home instead of coming to lecture to stay more connected. Oh, I also wanted to extend my services as a moderator. I'm on the internet constantly, I'm addicted, I'll admit it. I haven't found a 12 step program for it yet though!

On a totally unrelated note...can I extend an invite to you all to the SOM09 party this Friday???

Where: POSH Nightclub & Ultralounge (in Ferndale)
When: Friday November 18th from 9pm-2am

VIP access, drink specials and free shots (9-11pm)

I know 2nd years have a test Monday but a little break could be beneficial!

Hope to see you all there!

this is the second guy who tought us last year that died, plus we had a kid in our class who died last year, and two people in our class ended up in the hospital because of major reasons.
I am thinking our class is cursed!

Who died? I missed something here.

Short answer: Dr. Foa.

Long answer (from the e-mail sent out to the school):
"In Memoriam
Piero P. Foa, MD, PhD
April 13, 1911 – November 11, 2005
*
*
Piero P. Foa, MD, Ph.D, lauded as one of the WSU’s most influential teachers and a trailblazer in diabetes research, died on Friday, Nov. 11. Dr. Foa was 91-years-old.
*
A professor emeritus of the Department of Physiology, Dr. Foa’s long and distinguished association with the School of Medicine began in 1962, when he came to Detroit as chairman of the Department of Research at Sinai Hospital and professor of physiology at WSU. He served as acting chair of physiology in 1980-81.
*
In the span of his career, Dr. Foa celebrated many scientific accomplishments and accolades, including his presentation of evidence to establish that glucagons is a pancreatic hormone and the documentation of the mechanism of drugs used for the oral treatment of diabetes. Dr. Foa’s primary research focused on glucagons and insulin secretion and their role in the utilization of nutrients and the regulation of blood sugar levels.
*
As a teacher, Dr. Foa mentored graduate and medical students, fellows and visiting scientists from around the world. Many of his former students went on to leadership positions throughout the in the field of physiology. Among them is Joseph Dunbar, Ph.D, who completed his dissertation with the guidance of Dr. Foa.

“An advocate and practitioner of quality of opportunity, Dr. Foa has been the mentor of new generations of medical scientists, based solely on promise, talents and achievements. I have been proud to have been among them,” Dr. Dunbar has said.
*
Dr. Foa is the recipient of the School of Medicine Lamp Award bestowed by the medical students on their most influential teachers. He has been recognized internationally with numerous professional awards of merit, and was the recipient of the WSU Medical Alumni Association Weiner Award for distinguished achievement and the School of Medicine 1983 Distinguished Service Award. 1. Was that sent out to every class? If so maybe I skipped over it or something in my prelim read.

2. Sorry to say, but it is not a surprise that a 91-year-old man passed away. Not being mean here, but death is an eventuality for us all, and the older you are the more likely it is to happen.

3. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to hear a great mind speak.

1. Not sure, but I do know that it is also on the WSU-SOM homepage.
2. True; it seems that some people have forgotten that by definition life is a fatal disease. However, that doesn’t make it any less of a loss for his friends and family.
3. In retrospect, I’ll have to agree with you on that; but while I was sitting through that lecture I doubt that was what I was thinking.

Ok, I am an undergraduate senior currently applying to med school. Wayne is my first choice, I interviewed there in September and have been placed in their alternate category. I am still in that category now...do any of you guys know how common it is for people to be accepted off of the alternate list? I should be competetive for Wayne: MI resident, 4.0 GPA, 33Q MCAT, and I have done research at Wayne and have shadowed a doctor who is alumni there (he wrote me a rec letter too). Let me know what you guys think...

i think they look at the alternative list once a month before they call out other acceptances. It's interesting that you were put on the alternative list... I had same stats as you, except a little higher mcat and I was accepted right away and later given a scholarship. how'd your interview go? who was it with? there are many people at wayne w/ stats a lot less than you. I think you should have a good chance of being pulled off. Perhaps call them up (admissions office) and ask them what else you can do. You might even be able to schedule a meeting to discuss your application (just today the former dean of admissions said they used to do this). Maybe, a letter of intent/interest would be nice.

mtDNA--

Don't sweat it. Tons of people that I'm classmates with now got in off the wait list (including myself). You've got great stats so I wouldn't worry. That being said, you need to make sure the Admissions office knows that Wayne is your first choice. When I was put on the waitlist, I called and scheduled an appointment to meet with Dawn Street (she has a different last name now... I can't remember what it is), the Admissions rep. I also asked to sit in on a class and take another tour. They were very nice and more than happy to accommodate my requests... and... I was off the waitlist the next month! May or may not have had anything to do with my persistance....

Fun8-- we need to stop surfing the internet and get back to anatomy...

the internet is my biggest distraction! i am losing focus.... 😱 i am going to be so happy when friday's over!

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will send them a letter telling them that they are my top choice, and see from there. If I am still on the waitlist after that, then I will try to arrange a meeting.

Ive never written a letter of interest before. Who do I make it out to? To whomever it may concern? or Dear WSU admissions commitee? Any ideas?

mtDNA,

you have NOTHING to worry about. it is still very early in the admissions process and with your application there is NO WAY you will not get off the waitlist. good luck.

mtDNA said:

It is best to address it to a particular person, so that it has a better chance of getting read. I would call and ask who the best person to address it to would be. If not, Dawn Street (or whatever her new name is) or Silas Norman would probably be best. But, best to call and get the right name and address.

letter of interest:
In the letter you are going to want to keep it short and sweet- no longer than a page. In the first paragraph introduce yourself and why you are writing. In the second paragraph make sure and talk about the specific reasons why you want to go to wayne (i.e. best clinical training in the country!). You may want to highlight what you liked about your interview day (the tour). Third paragraph: summary of what you said in different words.

letter of intent:
same as LOInterest, except you tell them that if they accept you, then you will for sure attend wayne and drop all other schools. This carries a lot of weight at most places- only write it if you mean it.

good luck

Someone said something earlier about using persistence to get accepted. That works, if you do it correctly.
It is still too early to use the approach that I did (and have heard of others using), but what I did was I picked a day and time and called every week – to the extent that they practically knew it was me before I said anything. Actually one of my former co-workers made a crack about almost being able to set a clock by my call to WSU-SOM admissions.

Very important... do NOT try the above technique until after the last scheduled round of acceptances are sent out.
If you use it before than you will just annoy 🙂mad:, +pissed+, :meanie: ) the people in the admissions office and that is never a wise thing to do (?no acceptance for you?, 😕 ?did we loss your file 😕 , how did that happen? :meanie: ).

You can get away with the technique after the last scheduled round of acceptances because then they make/release decisions as people decline their spots in the class (or so I have been told).

The other tip for using that technique is that you have to be extra nice and polite to the admissions staff when you have them on the phone. 🙄 Maybe buy them some donuts when you get accepted as a token of your appreciation for them putting up with your calling. 🙄

Wow, oldjeeps that is the most extensive and amazing use of smilies I have seen in a long time.

Was bored/sick of studying and that supplied a short distraction for me. Unfortunately, I have to dive back into the books for essentially the next week – especially since that PathBio review did not treat me very well.

So what'd you guys think of the toilet-bowl-licking-likes-to-be-dominated-OCD patient in the video today? I was more than a little grossed out.... 😛

Thanks alot for the help and the insight you guys. I think I am going to write a letter of intent stating that Wayne is my first choice (and it is). Ill call the admissions office tomorrow and ask them who to make the letter out to.

I don't know why, but just reading about all these illegal drugs is making me crave them even more.

My take --

Psych was much harder than I expected. I despise questions that ask about statistics or prevalance or "X is as common as Y"... makes me glad I crammed it all a few hours before the exam, else I wouldn't have gotten it.

Pharm was moderate, and fair. I didn't watch or read the drug interactions lecture so I screwed myself for the last two pages worth of questions. Hopefully my grade from the last one carries me on this. How are they grading pharm, considering that it continues through pathophys?

Anyway, pathbio. best of luck to you all

I did bad in both, it's a trend I am developing this year. I am getting worse and worse
God I hate school

Keep your head up ya'll. Its a continuous path that may curve a little bit in places but I know you can all do it.

My take (Re: Pathbio)--

As a whole, not too bad; but where did they pull some of those questions out off?

Some of those questions asked about things that I don't think that I have ever read/heard about.

I did terrible on the images, went maybe 5 for 17. Put in a weak performance on the next set and was convinced I was going to fail until I hit the last 20 questions which I aced. Very strange. Anybody else have that experience?

I agree that some of those questions were out of nowhere (or maybe out of the book, which for me is about the same thing). Do we have to do images on exams for pathophys? I really hope not...

Happy Thanksgiving!

And yes, there are images in pathophysiology.

Dear Class:

Basic Life Support training was provided for half of the class on November 16th. Unfortunately a number of you decided to skip your scheduled training.

You will not be allowed to participate in the December training sessions unless you received prior permission to switch dates. We do not have adequate resources to accommodate students assigned to the December sessions plus those of you who failed to attend their assigned training last week.

You will be expected to provide proof of BLS certification by December 16th. Those who are not in compliance are subject to disciplinary action including but not limited to a Professional Behavior Deficiency Form in their file.

Although we realize that exam performance is a key focus we expect you to fulfill all School requirements. BLS training was placed in the first year curriculum in response to a tragic event that a number of our students faced last spring. BLS training was seen as a way to empower our students to better serve the community in the time of need. It is unfortunate that a number of you demonstrated a disregard for that responsibility.

Matt Jackson, Ph.D.

Assistant Dean for Basic Science Education

Academic and Student Programs

i have never met him in person.... but just the tone of this letter seems bad. i don't know what he expected assigning half the class BLS training the day before the anatomy cummulative final and the other half the day after our first biochem/physio exam.

Jackson is awesome (sarcasm). This is just the first of many such encounters you will have with him. Wait until micro next year.... oh, it will be grand.

Hopefully you guys won't actually be in any real trouble. I don't think anyone in the administration takes him seriously. Then again, they haven't fired him, so they must find some sort of use for him...

Earlier this year he sent a mass email out to everyone indicting someone for plagiarism and threatening to expel them because they emailed MD lab material out to everyone. He is a joke.

He's so petty - he's like a little kid - he sent this right after one of our classmates sent an email telling about a BLS class that she had set up for some people. So he has to send this email telling people how unprofessional they are. In my three months at Wayne, I haven't seen anything more unprofessional than that email he sent to second years about expelling that person for emailing MD-Lab programs.

I was at that BLS training on the 16th, and it was the most horribly run program - even for Wayne - it wasn't that the people teaching the course were bad, they were great, but Jackson, et al changed rooms on them twice, and then didn't provide enough rooms for the training, we did some of it in a hallway. The little twerp cam down the hall and saw us in the hallway, and immediately turned and walked away, it really seemed like he was avoiding everyone

 little twerp  I love it.

I see things have not changed.

Whoah. Jackson used to be so cool when he was just a Immuno professor. It sounds like he is getting a little of Dr. Speece in him now.

I don't know...Speece really doesn't seem that bad by comparison to the donkey ( :barf: Jackson +pissed+ ). Then again, I have yet to catch Speece's evil eye, so I really can't say much about him as of yet.

By the way, I hate to say it, but I really pity you first years. Last year, I didn't even know who Jackson was, let alone how he treats us. You guys have to deal with him both this year and next year (...involuntary shudder...). Beware of those letters in your file that he is threatening because he is very free with them and won't hesitate to slap all of you with one who skipped BLS day.

For those who care about completely unrelated topics... the Lions just fired Mariucci because of the Turkey Day ass-whoopin'.
