That exam blew even more than Neuro! 😱 I will most likely be retaking Genetics... grrr... it's so ridiculous. Those questions seemed like they were worded trickier on purpose!

I can only hope the average will be as low as it was for Nutrition... or that the pass rate is a 64 again.

I especially enjoy that Greb told us specifically not to worry about genetic nomenclature or specific mitochondrial disease. Good thing they asked pointed questions about both.

Ah well, its over. 25% doctor!

That was in my opinion the worst exam of the year. The questions were written horribly! I felt like I knew the material, but still couldn't determine what the hell Greb was asking about. And I'm still don't understand why a bunch of genetic counselors with masters degrees are teaching MD students. Their mentality and that of a physician are certainly different regarding certain things. Blah....arrrgghh

I actually liked the test, it was so similar to the '97 and '98 exams, a lot of the questions were almost identical. Don't know how I'd feel if I didn't study those. Neuro, however, was a bitch. I'm just glad it's over. It doesn't seem real yet. It will maybe sink it Monday when I sleep in until 1:00. I'll be having "phantom homework syndrome" for a while.

On that note...what is everyone doing for the summer break? I am going to be in the "D"...doing some research and going out every possible night, hopefully I wont destroy all of my brain cells with the information from this past year...ok...maybe not the improtant ones...genetics and nutrition can go 😀

I don't think I'd say that I liked it, but it did seem to be in line with the practice exams. Agreed that I'd be f-cked if I didn't do those. It did seem to have a handful of deliberately ambiguous questions (what do you tell a patient that has a fetus with a non-described 11 deletion, what do you tell a woman with an unknown disease about her transmission risk?). Pathetically enough, I gave the "Nobody knows" answer for both. What did you guys say?

As for summer plans... I have none, other than donning my Chewbacca costume and waiting in line for 3 days to see Episode III.

Waiting 3 days in line? where? We are going tonite...9:00 show at the AMC 30.

Was being sarcastic... hopefully you don't ACTUALLY think I'm going to be wearing a Chewy costume. I much prefer Han Solo.

Hey, I was just being non-judgemental. I mean I wouldn't put it past some of our classmates...so if it's your thing - woo-hoo for you. I just hope it is a decent movie.

Hello,

Some people were wondering about clin med grades...just thought I'd fill you in (I'm second year...well actually third year now. How weird is that?)

Last year the clin med grades were never posted. In a month or so they'll send you a letter in the mail. It will have your clinical med evaluation from small group and from the OSCE and will also have your overall z-score for the whole year. Can't guarantee it'll be the same for you, but thats how it worked last year.

Congrats on being done and enjoy your summer!

P.S. Our pass rate for genetics was pretty low...I think less than 60 even though the average was normal or high. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

Man, Episode III is powerful. It touched me more than any of the others ones in the series.

Agreed. I actually cared about what was going on.... imagine that, after I and II.

P.S. Jenn, I took no offense and I didn't mean to imply that I did. Again, sarcasm gone wrong.

   No, I got the sarcasm. I guess the way I hear it said in my head doesn't always transition to the written word well. Hmmm, I'll have to work on my punctuation.

The movie was pretty decent. Parts were a little OVER-melodramatic...like the long "no" from Darth, and the lovey-dovey talk in the beginning, but other than that it was good.

As for summer plans...well, I'm from here so here I will stay. We may take a couple of small 4 day trips. Probably some time in June we will go to Mackinac for our anniversary, or maybe out to Maine.

don't you guys miss school already?

I've spent most of today crying in bed, knowing that I won't have to cram anything into my brain for at least 2 months.

Hey, if anyone on here goes in and finds out that grades are posted, could you be a dear and give a heads-up here on SDN? I need closure after those exams...

They were NOT up this morning at 9am, I have a friend that is going to be there after 4, so I will have her check. Will update later today.

Their policy is not to post until the make-up exam is over. Neuro makeup was this morning (Friday), Genetics is Monday. Apparently the counselors don't even get them til then. meh...

3:23pm and still not posted. I can't wait until they give them to us online.

Update - Ms. O'Brien (counselor) says they'll be up Tuesday.

Thanks, I did my evals early then 😀 (5 minutes ago).

Hey to Jon, medschooldrone, TruTrooper, and zub...welcome to the thread. I'm glad y'all found us here.

And for the future Wayne staters...I'm a year round resident and if anyone needs help moving or directions, or just wants to hang out let me know...I'm more than willing to help anybody out.

Kate Connors just called me, she says grades are now posted. Only took 'em 8 days 😛

Any info on the final pass/fail cutoffs for Neuro & Gen?

Neuro final is up, 65% cutoff. Genetics is listed as 56% (yup, fifty-six) but I'm not sure if that's final.

Yup. I just went and looked and both classes have the final grades posted. I can't believe we did so well on that bitch of an exam in Genetics! Someone told me last years' class had an average around 61 on that test and ours was a 76. Why couldn't I be with the class of 2007?

What happens between the "draft" and the "final" postings? Is that when they throw out bad questions and such?

a spread of 20% between the average and the pass line for genetics? Don't think that I have seen that before. Bet it was a really weird score distribution.

Anybody have any suggestions for getting scores if I don't feel like visiting scott hall at the moment (since I am out of town)? Or should I just wait to find out if I have to retake Neuro until I am back in the D-town (hopefully that 65% is low enough to allow me out of Neuro)?

Speaking of which, for anyone that has gone in to check scores and stats; do you recall how many people failed those courses? (How much company will I have if I have to take the neuro re-exam?)

I believe 20 failed neuro and only 5 failed genetics. Something like 45 people failed the neuro final exam, though.

yeah, I saw ann greb while I was looking at my grade, she is the nicest person in med school. passing with a 55%, you have to put no effort to fail that final. all you need is a pulse and some common sense.
it sure feels good that school is over, all I need is my clin med grade and I'll feel a lot better. when are those damn clin med grades coming out?

If I was one of the unfortunate souls that failed Neuro than it looks like I'll have some company for the "re-exam".

I have an e-mail into Kate Conners at the moment, hopefully she can save me a trip into Scott Hall and tell me what my scores were (and if I get to relax or have to start working on re(?)learning the cerebellum and all those glorious pathways).

Do any of you really think that we will ever see our clin med scores?

I heard back from Ms. Connors....
I was NOT one of the unfortunate souls to fail Neuro 😀. She said that I managed to pass everything; so I guess I do get to enjoy my summer after all.

If I didn't have to be to work tomorrow morning I think I would go get blasted to celebrate.

medschooldrone, thanks for the offer. Sorry that I didn't see your post until this afternoon (the curse of having a job for this week).

Congrats oldjeeps. Did Ms.Connors actually give you your scores, or did she just tell you if you passed or not?

Wait let me get this straight. There is a make up exam at Wayne. My question is, can you take the make up exam to improve your grade or is it only if you fail?

so now i have to choose between wayne and ohio state. did any of you guys have a decision like this? i don't think i want to go out of state and don't really want to be that far from my family, specifically my fiance. to me, the mathlists seem to be somewhat comparable...

ohio: http://medicine.osu.edu/currentstudents/support/resmatch/index.cfm
wayne: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4731

So don't go then. I don't understand your dilemma? I mean what is out of state that is making you to be so torn up b/w the two? If it's more advanatageous in terms of family support, in state tuition, go wayne state. You only shouldn't go to Wayne if despite all these positives for some reason you simply feel you will be miserable at Wayne. As far as going out of school b/c the school might be arguably better don't even consider this as an argument, unless you were going to Harvard or Stanford or Yale. And even then you should only consider those schools if you want to go to academic medicine with strong research component. Divide the question into pros and cons and make a desicion. So don't be indesicive and make a desicion to go to Wayne already!!! 😀

I just read you are being torn up b/w Wayne and Ohio State. That's a no brainer, then Wayne State 🙂

The make-up is if you are projectile vomiting during the actual test time. :barf:

yup, i'm going to go... i tend to have a harder time with decisions like this than i should... thanks for the support

Her e-mail basically said that she couldn't give out details (scores) via e-mail but that I should relax (quit stressing out about Neuro) and enjoy the upcoming holiday and my temporary freedom from Scott Hall because I passed everything.

dancinjenn said:

Or at least that is the way that it is supposed to work. I have a feeling that there were some people last year that took the make-up exam because they were “sick” on the exam day 🙄 .
Which is why in order to get excused from an exam (or other mandatory appearance at Scott Hall) you are supposed to get excused by Student Affairs and have a doctor’s note to show that you were really ill.
Yet one more aspect of medical school that feels a lot like High School.

What are you guys up to now that school is over? I just had one week off, and next week, I'll be working...woohoo...NOT!! I wish I had a real summer vacation, but I NEED the green!

so you're going to ohio state, what's wrong with wayne state? we're not good enough for you?

Apparently Shangal and I are reading this differently… I took this to mean that you will be joining us all at Wayne and Shangal is reading it to mean that you are running for Ohio.
So which is it?

A feeling that I know all too well 🙁 ; which is why I just spent the last week working at one of my many old jobs.
Next week it is off to one of the summer programs at a Detroit area hospital – should be interesting to see how that goes.

Sorry Shangal.. that was poorly worded. I will be attending Wayne State this coming August. I just don't think I would be happy in Ohio and feel that either way, I will earn a MD. See you guys next fall!

Oldjeeps:
So what exactly are you doing in the hospital... research?

Research? Never. I already spent a few years working for a research lab and would rather deal with patients than EVER see another tissue culture hood.

St. John's Hospital has a summer externship program for medical students, which I'll be spending a few weeks doing this summer.
My current undertanding is that I'll basically just be spending those weeks shadowing in the specialties that I selected (a chance to experience a "week in the life of" and sort of see the lifestyle).
Essentially this is me continuing to attempt to look at some of the specialties that I probably won't get a chance to see during third and fourth year prior to filling out the residency applications.
