I was serious and he obviously wasn't fully aware of the event I was talking about. You think you have some type of immunity to something because you are in med school? Let me tell you something, that is a position that is earned and yes, bedside manners have alot to do with everything!! How you approach people will sometimes determine how they respond to you. I personally, and I might be wrong, think that a pre-med symposium is a waste of your time as a pre-med out there. Come on, do you really need someone to tell you that you have to do well on the MCATs to get into med school. There I just said it, you don't need to go anymore. Dude, I knew that when I was in high school. And I think the other guy was laughing because he didn't know that pre-med symposiums existed out there, and I kind of agree with him, it is kind of ridiculous to have one. But I guess there is a fee to get registered for one and they are preying on students who are willing to pay this fee. Which I think is wrong. And trust me, the vast majority of kids who get accepted to med school never went to one.

and the bed side manner comment is hillarious, I don't think most of us will act the way we do on this forum in real life. We all learned to be politically correct and not make offensive comments. That's why this forum is cool, you can get away with comments like, you are a nerd ddmo, no offense, for example and get away with it. Shangal I only said something back because I hate being judged for what other "premeds" do on this board, I don't go by the name premed I'm me!! Of course "some" people act a certain way on the boards and another in real life, all the more reason not to attack someone for coming to this thread and making a comment about someone else's ability! Just because premeds always come here and say "and you're going to be a doctor" doesn't mean that the person won't be a good doctor. And on the symposium thing, you go to meet other people as well as get vital information. Just because you know certain things doesn't mean everyone should know it. There are people at these school activities that you may meet that could be vital to getting in or even being an active part in helping you. Anyways, I may attend because my friend has never been to one and she has a slew of questions to ask, and who better to answer her questions than the representatives of the school?

1) I won't jump on your comments about Detroit JonD, they were pretty acurate, minus the Detroit sucks part. It all depends what you are looking for. Detroit provides a sense of adventure that I like. As Michael Rosenberg said in the Free Press:

2) Can we just drop the pre-med symposium animosity. We should all be WSU ambasadors to other pre-meds and med students. At the end of the day, their image of Wayne will be colored by their interactions with you. I prefer, "they were really cool and helpful, I get positive vibes from Wayne" compared to, "the people were all rude, snotty, jerks, Wayne sucks."

3)sistahnik, I love to pass good advice along. I have been able to get where I am today because there were people ahead of me that gave me so much great advice. It makes life easier. I won't be at the symposium, but please PM me if you have any questions about the process.

No he's not. Check a map of Detroit closely. Windsor is actually due south of downtown Detroit and the Grosse Pointe area.

Regarding housing, where do most students live?? I'm in-state, and could live with family in Washington Twp, but I'd rather be on my own given that I'm a non-trad and used to that.

Do many of you guys live together, like in rented houses?? I'm sure it varies greatly, but an ideas would be appreciated as I'll be looking for something over the next few months.

Also, forgive me if this has been addressed already, but the search function can be quite tedious! lol

1/3 within Detroit city limits
1/3 Royal Oak/Southfield
1/3 spread everywhere else (Grosse Pointe, Livonia, Sterling Hts, etc etc etc)

ha, yeah i was wondering the same thing. that one of speece doing the skit from office space was perfect.

i thought there was a lot of funny stuff. bagchi rocked! he was really funny in every skit he was in. i thought there were live skits better than the interpretitive dance though... not that it wasn't good, just didnt see why it won the "award" for being the best live skit.

do they ever make the DVDs available?

I'm going to start at Wayne in the fall and I am interested in living in Royal Oak. I wanted to see what your guys' thoughts were on that. Where are good places to live there? How much should I expect to pay for rent? How is life there in general as compared to living in downtown Detroit?

Also a general question-is it better to have a roommate or no? I realize it depends on the person but I just wanted to see what your experiences have been and if you guys had any thoughts on it.

Detroit or RO are both good. No more than $1 per square foot. Personal preference.

i don't live in RO, so I can't comment on specific places. However, like 1/3 of the class lives there... so you won't be alone. As Astudent said, you will probably want to pay $500-1000/month if you room by yourself. I've been splitting my rent of $730 with my fiance ($365/each) for a 2 bedroom that includes heat, water, garbage. You might want to save up ~$2000 to for starting fees. After a couple weeks after school starts you will get loan money (~$20k paid in 2 installments) that you will be able to use to live on. The different starting fees you might have: first months rent, deposit for apartment, health insurance, moving costs, books, hepatitis B immunization, and a few other fees that go to wayne. I had about $2k saved and it was just enough. Health insurance through wayne was $2600 ($1300 in aug, $1300 in jan). If I were you, I would try and find insurance through someone else (it would be much cheaper), but make sure you call wayne and make sure that you can do this. If you don't think you will have enough money, you can get an emergency loan from the financial aid office. It will take 4-5 days to get the money.

about the roomate, i like having my fiance as my roomate because she does most of the cleaning, grocery shopping, and other chores.... and since i don't go to class, i am not a total hermit. So my advice would be to move in with a significant other, lol....

Parts of it violated me.... and I violated parts of it too. It was really weird. I can't believe those boob questions were word for word from Thursday. Anyone who didn't go and didn't read that email lost out on 5 easy points. I'm guessing my grade will be slightly below average where it has been all year.

It sure feels nice to not have anything to do this weekend though, doesn't it?

Parts of it were pretty rough. Funny story: I came to lecture Thursday morning, stayed two hours, and left before they did the questions. Then I forgot to look at the email before the exam. So there's a solid kick-in-the-junk...

Also - anybody who has to write papers for skipping those CT seminars, don't procrastinate those - they're due on the same Monday as the GI exam.

Sorry... I was only kidding...mostly! My husband goes to COM, so I'm a big fan. Anyway, no, it shouldn't affect your decision, I think it is still too early to call. Although, I'm very excited about the MSUCOM expansion, whether or not it affects WSUSOM. But I'm very happy at Wayne. Go to MSUCOM or Wayne, IMHO the best schools in Michigan! I am a bit biased.....

I've posted on this site occasionally with other questions, but for those of you who don't know me I am a high school (soon to be) senior who is pretty certain I want to be a doctor. Very certain, actually. Yes, i've shadowed, volunteered, etc, etc.

I want to post a question in this thread because I live in Michigan (Bay City), and wanted to apply to the MedStart program at Wayne.

My stats are fairly good, but not amazing. 3.7 GPA (damn freshman year...) who plays football, baseball, and films movies as a hobby. Fairly good clinical exposure as well. Is there anyone on here that went this route? Are you glad you did? Are my stats only mediocre? The reason is because I do not want to waste my time, energy, and money if my chances are a long shot. i guess I want to know what it takes to get into this program, and seeing as how I am applying for college this fall, I wanted to post this now to leave time between now and then to do whatever it is that you guys suggest.

I've seen other high schoolers come on here and be "all business" (i believe you call it pre-med pre-frosh?), and they got made fun of (sorta). Trust me, I'm not like that, so please be straight up and give honest advice. I'm not gung-ho, and I have a fun personality. I'm a charmer. Meet me once, love me forever. 😉

I do remember alot of matching toward the end, and there were a couple of questions from the handout they gave us, I think it was something about VitE.

There were also like 30 questions on leukotriens, prostaglandins, other the other inflammatory stuff. Just know everything you could about how they are formed and what it means to have a double bond in one of the carbons.

Other then that the exam was one of the easiest exams I had in med school. But again thats thanks to the handout which basically covered every question on the exam. And the review also covered more then 80% of the exam

I don't know anybody from the program, but I think that your ACT would be the most important. You will find that the minimum requirements are 3.5 gpa and an ACT of 25. If you have above this and write good essays, you should be fine. If you really want to know how competitive you would be, it would probably be best to contact:

Procrastinator, don't worry about med school when you are still in high school. Worry about getting into U of M undergrad first. Because come on, you don't want to go to a crappy undergrad like Michigan State. You have to be a loser to go there!

But once you do get into undergrad, my recommendation is pick the easiest major you can. If you do that your GPA will be good and you will have an easier time as an undergrad.

I'm pretty sure that we need to have some idea of the sources (it's on that review sheet) and I'm positive we don't need the RDAs, he's said that we don't need to know them a few times. Happy studying.

MSUCOM better really think about this one. If the DMC is ready and willing to pull some of this on WSUSOM (with their long history), then MSU better believe that Duggan and the DMC wouldn't think twice about putting a knife in their back – especially if it looked like it might be in the DMC’s “financial best interest”.

Expect nothing...You and your partner will each have 25 minutes with a PD standarized patient. Do whatever you feel weakest in. I did HEENT & Neuro-muscular. I skipped the vitals and didn't have time for anything else. If you practiced this weekend, you prepared more than I did so you may be able to get through more than I did. Good luck!
