just a small correction to this: most of the posts on blackboard are saying to keep the exam the same. Since most of them are coming from “anonymous” we have know way of knowing how many people actually feel that way.

Very true. And I know lots of people in our class who are very technologically un-savvy so they probably have no idea about this controversy. I am just burnt out and fed up with Wayne. I can't wait to get done with classes (even though we'll still have lots of studying to do).

In other news: When do we find out where we'll be doing our rotations and what block we got in the lottery? Wasn't that supposed to be soon?

Hamburger,
I think a large percentage from my class came off from the alternate list, so you shouldn't worry that much. Just don't bug the secretary to much because its not up to her who get in and who doesn't. If you have good grades from this semester, send them to the admissions office. Good grades always help. And good luck

back to this matt guy, what an ass

And katrina, I agree with you, I should be more vocal. I am going to scott hall right now and am going to start my one person protest. I want to be creative, do you think chaining my self on the entrance will make a good statement, or streaking down the halls (and I'll write down all over my body "one more day"), man being vocal is awsome

I would probably be more up for the chaining to the entrance, only because I don't think my hubby wants me running around naked. I hope I didn't upset you with any of my comments. I am getting very perturbed by the whole situation and may have come across as a b!tch.

Your sense of humor really cracks me up by the way.

Does neuro make any of you miss the wonderful poopiness of GI?

Oh the good times of the puke and the poop.... how I miss thee.

May 1. And why does it take them so long to get a computer to spit out the results? 😕 😕 😕 😕 😕

Oh, wait...it's Wayne State. 🙄

wow... you guys really like to **** on your school... do you blame it more on lack of organization or just not caring ?

Just blame it on a bunch of beaten down sour MSII's in need of a break. Sometimes it's easier to blame the school for one's failures as opposed to blaming themselves.

I'm reminded of something I read by a physician about the four years of medical school. MSII was along the lines of, "the second year of medical school is completely wasted on second year medical students."

Shangal said:

Yes, that comment was arrogant.

However, it's better than annonymously trashing Matt, who had the integrity to throw his opinion out there, along with his name, regardless of whether that opinion coincides with your own.

FIGHT! FIGHT! Outside, 4 pm, by the would-be power generator! My money is on Shangal...

So are we still going to have the last tests on the 8th and 10th? Dr. Jackson's email didn't really say...if so, that's awesome. We get a couple extra study days, and still get out when we're supposed to. Then I can go out this weekend!

And once again they prove me wrong with the revised schedule. Must be that they are saving up those early starts for next year.

I hope that everyone is now happy with when the various exams are scheduled for.

CeLo: I would guess that the last couple exams remain as previously scheduled – which means I now have less time to cram/read for the PD written exam.

Well in ddmo's defense I guess the class is complaining alot about the re-scheduling, I just checked out the discussion site for neuro, and man there are alot of comments there.

And Flobbers, thanks for assuming I am a big guy, I am more average, and I don't know how big ddmo is, but he sounds like a geek so I guess I can take him. I am not a bad fighter, especially if the guy I am fighting with is drunk. That's my secret

And ddmo, the ass comment was a joke. I wasn't serious about it. But I am not afraid of telling him that to his face. You don't know how straightforward a person I am. I am pissed off at how he speaks on behalf the whole class though. If he wants to take it on time then ask Dr. Jackson if he could take it early. I for one did pretty bad on the last exam, my first below the average pathophys grade, and wouldn't mind more time to study for the next exam.

Besides, from what I heard the boards are based on the pathophys class anyways, so its not like its a waste of time studying more pathophys, we are going to have to study it again over the summer.

I didn't even think of the PD written! I read about 5 pages from Schwartz before I realized I'll never have time to read all that.

So I guess we're all good for neuro and screwed for everything else. It really sucks for the people that still have to do their PD exam final.

Nothing like massive stress to finish out the school year. 🙄

I'm going to the bar tonight for sure.

UMP said:

I attribute what you are reading to the fact that most of the WSU students that have been posting on here over the past couple of days are burned out and over stressed second years, in dire need of a vacation that we won’t be getting this summer.
As you may learn in the future second year tends to be a low point in the life of many med students.
Which tends to cause us to forget what the good points about our school are (somebody remind me what they are again).

It's cool Shangal, I think we are all just a little charged up around here.

And at 6'3", 190lbs, you better hope I'm drunk. 😛

I think this moving it to Friday is a bit of an extreme. The problem with pharm is that you basically will have to go to or watch those lectures, since Yamazaki and McCauley like to put all sorts of extraneous stuff in the integrative type lectures. If you just choose to watch them, it will take your entire weekend, leaving no time to study. And at some point we are supposed to either read Schwartz or Mark's CD material, which is still 80 extremely dense pages, on top of all our useless notes.

This whole thing has become a serious mess. Ohh well. Belly up to the bar and eat that **** sandwich.

cool, I got out of that fight. I wish it was that easy back in high school

anyways, friday, isn't that too extreme. I thought it was going to be on wednesday morning, but firday. That's insane. I am kind of against the re-scheduling of the exam now. What were they thinking?

ddmo said:

I guess you're not the person most of us thought you were... I totally thought you were this guy in our class who is probably no taller than 5'10. 🙂

hint hint... his picture is on the internet. but at least i don't feel bad now. i am 6'3'' and 190lbs as well... but last year at this time i was 160-170lbs. I have been feeling kind of bad about gaining so much weight in a year.

i think ddmo was probably kind of upset for you guys giving other people a bad impression of wayne. it really isn't wayne's fault that some contractor hit the power line. rescheduling year1 and year2 classes is a particular challenge. especially for year2, given you guys have step1 to take within the next couple months.

Well, if you remember my previous screen name, there are only three people who could possibly have that name in our class. Since I'm a guy, you can narrow it down to 2. And the height pretty much gives it away.

So you're either Devon or Drew. Are you on myspace? If so, that'd help in my sleuthing. LOL.

I think the height pretty much spells it out. Only one of us is that tall. But it's a secret... shhhhh....

Don't worry! Each month, when the committee meets, they go back through the alterantes, and can choose to pull from the alternate list. So, keep checking back with them each month.

I was put on the waitlist for a month. Now, take this with a grain of salt, as there is noway of knowing if this helped my waitlist status, but I did some things that may have moved my place faster. I called the admissions office, asked questions, came back for another tour and sat in on a class. I talked with Dawn about housing arrangements. I showed my interest (which was sincere, btw). The admissions office was more than happy to answer my questions and fit me into their tours. It was no biggie. So, again, no idea if this helped at all.... but it can't hurt, and it's better than sitting around worrying.

Also, I hear the waitlist moves quite a bit over the summer.
Good luck!!

Thank you both. That does make me feel better. I appreciate the kind words and advice. Hopefully, things work out well... still worried, though.

all I've heard is great things about Wayne, except of course when I come on here and see you guys chat away...

anyways, I'll join with any hard-core med student crew at Wayne St. if they guarantee me admission.... I'm 6'6 225 🙂 (not kidding, I'm sinking this low)

I'll take care of "Matt" for an admit 😉

Did they take attendance at the MD lab thing this morning?

JonD, no they didn't.

And by the way, for all the non-wayne students who check out this thread and read my posts. I have no hate against wayne state. I love being here, its the studying I hate, which I would've wherever I went. I was never the kind of guy who liked going to school, which is the personality you need to succeed in med school.

People who go here are all nice, most are not arrogant, unlike this one guy who sometimes posts here, and kind of down to earth people. And to be honest, I don't think I will get along with other med students like I get along with students from my class. They are all pretty funny and I always get emails from students in our class with pneumonics, which I never use by the way, to help the rest of the class. Which I think is pretty cool.

So in summary, wayne state is awsome, michigan state sucks, and go blue

You may want to reconsider. Matt is about 6'2 and on a military scholarship. Besides, despite what you read here, he is a good guy who is capable of sending very diplomatic emails when the rest of us want to scream at someone.

She's a second year. You can use the search function on the webpage for her email.

wonder who Shangal is referring to with that comment. Especially since we have all come across as a bit arrogant (or at least as major jerks) on here at some point in time.

just because you are military scholarship doesnt make you tough.... all it means is you signed away 4+ years of your life away to the government after wayne is done running you through their meatgrinder.

being tall doesn't make you tough either. one of the best fighters i know is a ranger and is like 5'8''. i have seen him take down people who had about a foot plus 100 lbs on him.

yeah, I agree with fun8stuff, I mean bruce lee kicked kareem abdul jabar's ass in that one movie. To be good in fighting you need to know how to fight, height could actually hurt you if you are un-coordinated. That's of course if you are an adult, if you are a kid being taller would always put you at an advantage.

All this fight talk is putting me in the mood in kicking someone's ass. I wish I was in ann arbor right now so I can get involved in one of my friends weekly fights outside of bars. I love it how cops over there don't care

And back to ddmo, I kind of know who you are now. I mean I talked to you once and you gave me this evil look back when I asked you this question.

Peace out and talk to you all later

I was trying to make an unsaid point that I have a great deal of respect for the people who enter the military, whether they go in after high school, in ROTC in college, or are on scholarship in a professional school.

In terms of fighting, height can be a powerful advantage if you know how to use it. The extra reach is tough to get around when your opponent can hit you before you can attack them. If you are the taller, it makes a difference if your opponent's head is the same level as your shoulder. Why I bother mentioning this, I don't know. I guess it shows how burned out we are and tired of being caged.

I realize there is no hard and fast answer, but some insight/personal experiences would be appreciated. I was wondering how "friendly" Wayne is to Non Trads? I will be 42-43 upon application. My numbers are good. EC's sre decent, and LOR's should be fine. GPA will be ~3.7ish/SCI-~3.5-3.6ish. Based on some practice MCATS, I am hoping for a 28+. I got a 26 on my 2 practice tests. This is with BIO 1-2,Chem 1-2, Physics 1, and about 1/2 way through O-chem 1. I also had other sciences. 13+ years experience as a paramedic and will have worked 60+ hours throughout my entire bachelor's.
Just wondering if anyone can give me a little idea on how Wayne ticks. Thanks and good luck in your studies.

I think you will be fine. As long, as your mcat turns out the way you want it and as long as you interview and write decent essays you should be a shoe in. I know of a handful of nontrads (a handful between 30 and 40+? yrs) in my class- 3 or 4 were paramedics or nurses. There are probably more that I don't know about as well. I think wayne looks favorably upon nontrads with experiences like yours.... just make sure you know why medicine and why you want to change your career path. They will probably want you to talk about these things in your interview. I think there are some "nontrads" on this forum, maybe they can give you better advice.

Another thing you might be able to do (depending on where you live), is to actually schedule an appointment to talk to someone at the med school. Perhaps, get a tour and a chance to ask your questions to admissions... or even call and ask over the phone. Good luck!

Thanks for your quick reply. Wayne is my number 1 choice. I am married with 2 kids and live in the burbs about 20-30 mins north of Wayne. I will do what you suggest and schedule an appointment/tour. I am fairly confident that my MCAT will be good(but who knows). I will cut my schedule down to 40 hours the jan(2007) before the April MCAT, for studying and probably a workshop. Once again, thank you for your input and everyone, keep the info/suggestions coming.

From my experience, I think that they would still look at the overall application and your experiences in healthcare, which I think is a strong plus in your situation. I was also in the same situation (i.e., being "non-trad"), had my undergrad back in 1992, worked in allied healthcare for ~14 years, just completed the prerequisites in the Fall of last year (are you still planning on taking OrgChemII?)

Anyway, I was offered a position for this year's entering class, so I think being a non-traditional student (and out-of-state) should not be an issue.

If invited for an interview, expect to be asked as to why it took you this long to consider a change in career.

CCEMPT, I think you should really think about what you are getting yourself into. You have a job and a family you have to take care of. Do you really have the time to do that and go to med school even if you get in? Med school sucks, and being older doesn't help when you study, especially if you want to have spend time with your kids.
Also, you have to take classes all over again because you graduated such a long time ago. I think the last class you can transfer is one that you took 15 years ago, any class older then that won't count. What else, yeah, you have to take all the pre-med requirements too, even if you ace the MCATs

But yeah, I don't think the admission committee will discriminate against you, we have a guy who was in his late 50s if not 60s in our class last year, and they accepted him, so I don't see why the won't accept you

And ddmo, you might've been tired that day, and it was a stupid question, it was more like a request actually, so don't worry about it. I actually have heard that you are a really nice and funny guy from friends of mine. So don't stress out at from what I said. And I don't want to tell you the request because then you might know my identity, and I don't want that.

I am actually finishing up my bachelor's in May of '07. I an almost done with my pre req's. I have O-chem 2, and physics 2 to complete. I will take Biochem
next winter. I understand this is going to be hard. I appreciate your input. I have definitely made up my mind about med school. I was just wondering how Wayne responded to us "older" folk. I will apply broadly, both MD and DO.
I have an incredible wife and 2 awsome kids, so if I need to move somewhere, the will support me. It is because of them , that I am working so hard to get good grades and better my chances for admittance to Wayne.

Rob

Oh, I misunderstood your previous post. I assumed you had a full time job and wasn't going to school

Good luck in getting in. I guess I am wrong in giving you advice. I am sure you put careful thought into this and have your family's support. But for your own sake, I hope you have enough money saved to pay for your tuition, which is going to be over $100,000 by the time you graduate. I guess if you can then you won't have to worry about paying your loans for the rest of your life

Rob,
There is a chance you could get asked questions like what Shangal asked. ...Just be prepared, you never know who you will get to interview you. However you answer it, give a positive sounding answer, like you did above.

Another thing you might want to ask about/consider is the early decision program at wayne. It is where you only apply the same year as you normally would, but you only apply to Wayne (in like July or august?) and you hear back in September or October? I am not sure on the details... but anyways, it is kind of bold- like putting all your eggs in one basket, but if you have a fairly strong application and are deadset on wayne, it might be the way to go. It shows how serious you are about wayne, which would be looked upon favorably. I remember asking about this a few years ago when I first toured wayne, and i thought the admissions lady said almost everyone who applies early decision gets accepted... but i have toured a good many schools in last few years, so maybe i am mixing up schools... still a good thing to ask about though.
