Wayne State University part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When I check my outlook via outlook web access(owa.med.wayne.edu) on my laptop the class schedule appears an hour earlier. I tried to configure my the Outlook on my computer, Outlook 2003 to gain access to my med school email and it doesn't work. I downloaded the SOM certificate and I make sure I'm connected but when I login it doesn't work.

All I really want to do is to be able to seem my class schedule at the correct time. I thought maybe using Outlook 2003 instead of outlook web access would correct the problem, but I can't even login in to my med school email via Outlook 2003. I emailed the helpdesk but they haven't been much help.

i had the problem where things were not showing up at the right time on outlook web calendar. are you only having this problem from your computer (are the times right if you check it from a school comuter)? if it is only your computer i think it may be that your computer is set to the wrong time zone. double check it is on eastern time. even if you set up outlook to receive wayne mail, the calendar won't automatically transfer to outlook 2003 on your computer.

to configure outlook on your computer:
1. click 'tools' -> 'email accounts'
2. choose 'add a new email account'
3. either choose pop3 or imap (with pop3, your email will not be saved on the web after it is downloaded to outlook on your computer).
4. fill in the info requested: incoming mail server will either be pop.med.wayne.edu or imap.med.wayne.edu depending if you chose pop3 or imap, respectively. If you are mainly using your laptop at home then set the outgoing to the mail server provided by your internet service. If mainly using your laptop at school use smtp.med.wayne.edu... you can also set up 2 diff mail accounts in outlook with diff smtp servers (one for at school, one for at home). user name and password are the same as what you type into to gain access via the web.

After you do this, it should download your email to outlook on your computer. If it doesn't, you may want to bring your computer into scott hall and have them help you out. This isn't going to download the calendar though.

Thanks. I tried your suggestion but my mail didn't download to the outlook on my computer. Do you know where in Scott Hall I could go?

what's your error message>? i can't remember the name of the office... perhaps someone can remind me.. computer support? but if you walk into scott hall on the ground floor.. you know how there are 2 hallways going toward the cafeteria. well the one that is farther from the entrance. take that hallway down a ways and computer support is on the left.. ithiink that is the place.

Any fourth years out there know of good websites that review residency programs? The one I know of is www.scutwork.com and the reviews are written by the residents that go through the programs.

Good luck to everyone in this annoying application process.

There is no error message. When I go to the inbox for my imap.med.wayne.edu account, it says there are no new items to show in this view. I sent an email to the my med school email and no new messages came. And I received some mail today(i saw it on my owa.med.wayne.edu account) but it didn't show up in my inbox on the Outlook 2003 on my computer.

2nd years- Good luck on your immuno test today!

I've been using EMRAmatch.org. It's a great site for residency reviews if you're interested in Emergency Medicine. Other than that, maybe the professional society of whatever specialty you are considering might have something similar. I've also found the EM forums here on SDN to be very helpful as well. I'm sure the other specialty forums are just as good.

How goes the personal statement, application, CV crap? I'm getting close to the end with mine... sure takes a lot of time to make BS sound like pure gold!

It's extremely annoying trying to juggle three things at the same time: rotation, application/letters, and step 2 prep. As for my personal statement, I am finding it rather difficult to cram everything I want to say into one short page. I will be very happy once the end of September hits and all exams are done with my app submitted.

When are you taking step 2? I was planning on doing it July, but chickened out. I rescheduled for the end of September 'cuz I'm too busy right now trying to ace my EM rotation. Supposedly the departmental exam is a beast and the honors is set at an 85%. :scared:

Tybalt says: Boo on stupid residents who take their stupidity out on poor medical students! Hooray Beer!

My program has 2 residents who know less than most of the med students -- really. (but the other 14 are amazing)

Any upper classman want to give advice on how to do good in histo? ( any advice, books, review tools, qbanks...) anything that will make it smoother..

:scared: that sucks! did they blame something on you?? the one thing i have experienced that sucked was one resident would have me make copies of all her progress notes then file them... then often times she would want me to get them back out so the attending could sign them....

memorize the notes... esp dr. crossland's. some of the questions can be tricky, but 98% of them are straight from the notes. you have to be careful about other sources... you have enough notes to read as it is- if you get too much else, you will soak up less of the notes, which is what is really important. As far as questions, the old tests were good enough for me. The questions are old... but much of what is in the histo course has not really changed (along with a lot of the first year courses). I bought HY histo- which is good, but i think i probably wasted my money. I remember only using it for the few lectures that did not have good notes or to clarify parts that were not clear to me. Focus on the notes!

Print off the slides before lab, show up to every lab, take notes on the slides you printed, and know those COLD. Then, focus on the notes for reading because then you will know about every structure that the lecturers refer to.

There really is nothing else you can do for year 1 exams except read, read, read again, and try to learn by simple rote memorization.

Not really -- it was just that the resident was having an especially "hard" day and everytime they were yelled at this person would find something to pick on me about... plus this person was just being bitchy all day. But today was okay... the resident actually apologized! (So I guess they can't be all bad 🙂

so i am getting ready for tomorrow's ped's osce... stretching out... it has been awhile since i have had to bend over and grab my ankles...

so what is meant by non-invasive physical exam? obviously vital signs (bp,temp,rr,hr),head circ,length/height,weight... are the other stuff like heent, resp, heart, abd, cns, etc non-invasive? i am assuming not...

So I am getting the feeling that the OB-Gyn OSCE is not a real big deal... Any thoughts from fourth years?

Anyone have the pass rates and averages for anatomy and histo from previous years? Just wondering what they look like... thanks 🙂

i think i might have asked this question like 2 yrs ago and oldjeeps responded. there were some comments about OCD record keeping that were exchanged 😀 search the original wayne thread. i think honor was a little above 90% for that first anatomy test. prob about same for histo, but not sure. passrate was prob around 60-70%

So I guess this isn't a definitive answer, but I would imagine the non-invasive PE is everything you might do without poking through the skin or investigating genitals or things like that -- similar to the 2nd year PD final.

Perhaps a 4th year can comment... and then also comment on the OB-Gyn OSCE

yeah, it was bp, heart rate, head circumference, red reflex, cap refill. easy stuff. but the rest of the osce pretty much sucked. i thought i heard every other osce besides the ped's osce is cake. but at least i will be able to remediate tuesday. i am pretty sure i failed miserably.

one would have to think that if a majority of people have to remediate year after year that dr. friday would realize the students are not learning the stuff she is testing us on and that we may need a little more input as to what we will be tested on ahead of time.

Yes, but that would actually make sense -- and that would be just silly!😛

In her mind the purpose of the Peds OSCE is to serve as a "learning experience". I think that everyone in my Peds group had to remediate at least one station from each of the OSCE days.

Most don't fail more than 2 sections on the Peds OSCE. The grading isn't too harsh, so don't freak out yet!

The OB/GYn OSCE is pretty straightforward as well. Interview w/ a patient, write a note, and perform a pelvic exam on a plastic model. Patient will probably have abnormal bleeding, a cycle abnormality or pelvic pain. Something pretty common that you will have seen before in clinic.

Good luck!

1. is it just me or has anyone else noticed how the stairwell that goes down from old hutzel parking garage (the middle stairwell facing scott hall) smells like urine... you think some homeless people have been creeping in their and using it as their urinal?

2. anyone remember what the grade turn around for ped's is (or at least how long it takes to find out our shelf results)?

....i have to be cc tomorrow on my day off.. suck!

I have many times thought that many stairwells of parking structures smell like interesting fluids...

I am a little dumb sometimes -- what is "cc" stand for (I only know of carbon copy and I don't think that makes sense)

Just a guess, but in this instance I'm thinking cc=continuity clinic.

Don't recall the turn around time for scores, but you won't get shelf scores until the entire rotation grade has been calculated.
Also, some clerkships are known to be significantly slower about getting their scores posted than others are.

continuity clinic 😀 time for camping.. before IM starts. I guess I won't have labor day weekend starts! suck!

We got our peds scores the day we took our internal medicine shelf (first day available). So, about 2 months. OB/Gyn is worse; they took almost 3 months.

eh heh heh. Guess that would have been a little more obvious to me if I was in my primary care block 🙂

Psych Pstinks. Nuff Psaid.

Just think of it as more fun times with Dr. S (or have they gotten around to replacing her?).

Yeah now we have Dr. Morreale -- she is really young (early 30's) and awesome. She reduced some of the busy work so it is what one would expect from a 4 week rotation. 🙂 Also her lectures are great -- succinct, well organized and filled with important information. Plus... she likes to order snacks for us at lecture and food always makes me happy 👍

Any of you other 4th years certify your ERAS yet? I did this morning. I didn't go into the office to do it, just pushed the button from home. I checked online this evening and about 10 of the 30 programs I've applied to had already downloaded my application.

I'm taking care of that tomorrow morning, and I will very happily get that monkey off my back. Now all I have to worry about is getting through step 2 and then it is smooth sailing the rest of the way (except for sub-I).

I have to give credit to the speed of ERAS and some of these residency programs. The fastest one had my application downloaded four minutes after I submitted it.

man, i sure do love doing these continuity clinic assignments....:barf:

Yes, those SUCKED! Depending on who you are working with, you may be able to get away with a half a$$ed effort. If they insist on working with you on those each week, then you are pretty much screwed and have to do all the work. If they just know you have the assignments to do, you can BS your way through some of those (i.e. just pick a couple patients and write down that you called them). If it is getting near the end, just start BSing your way through them all the more. All they are looking for is to check that you have something written there. Remember there is no honors for that course, just a P/F, so those of you who are actually putting lots of effort into them are wasting your time.

haha... yeah, i don't know why they feel like we need more busy work. i am starting to think there is a lot of paperwork/busywork in medicine...

p.s. can i use bleach to wash my whitecoat? i had been having a dry-cleaned every once inawhile first and second year. this year i have just been washing it in the washer with regular detergent, but that just isnt cutting it anymore.. and i dont really want to pay the $ to get it dry cleaned..

I guess I haven't actually tried to bleach mine... but I think that the shoulder emblem and your name would get bleached as well so I wouldn't try it.

yeah that is what i thought... but i thought i heard someone mention they bleached their's... which is why i was wondering

This is why we should get to wear cool coats -- so they wouldn't show dirt so much (especially that nasty neck dirt -- eww!). Mine would be tiger print. That would be awesome. I bet it would instill a great sense of trust in me from patients. (see my avatar for sample)

So... was getting your white coat embroidered with your name mandatory or something? Because I never did it... 😳
