i actually talked to Dr. Musich, the director of med education at Beaumont. He said Beaumont usually has around 20-25 students per month at Beaumont from wayne. He said they signed on to the clinical campus for 5 years, for 24 students. They severed their ties with U of M (they used to rotate there for Oby/Gyn and Psych) and said after the 5 years they dont know what they will do. They plan on increasing the teaching capacity at their troy and grosse point locations, so they might have spots for wayne in the future.
Also, he mentioned talking to Dr. Frank about the clinical campus and he said so far
Henry ford-signed up for 60 students (also severing ties with UM)
Oakwood-50 students (supposedly also severed ties with UM)
St Josephs Ann Arbor-30 students (cutting down on UM students)
Providence-30 students
St Johns-hasnt committed yet but assumes they will because providence did, so probably around 30 students
Beaumont-24 students
VA- wasnt exactly sure, but he says probably 20.
Thats around 240 students, so either DMC has to take the other 70, or they will have to look for other hospitals. He mentioned that they visited a hospital in Saginaw, a teaching hospital down in Toledo (they are having problems with Univ of Toledo), and a hospital in flint.
Another problem is that Dr. Musich said they never brought up the whole 2 student per team thing in the contracts, so that can be another issue.
Providence could also be a problem because Wayne doesnt want mixing of caribbean and wayne students, and they take a TON of caribbean students.
Dr. Jackson was telling me that they are working to develop a stronger affiliation with Henry Ford, and that Henry ford has already said that they feel their future is with Wayne (hopefully this actually plays out) and that they will be able to handle more students in the future.
I am doing research right now, and the surgeon I work with says that henry ford will plan in the future to accomodate over 50% of our class. Im not sure how that will work, but he says they would be able to no problem if they stop taking students from other schools. I guess they are looking for stronger ties with Wayne now that Beaumont is getting its own med school.
