Wayne State University part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends on what you mean by "good".
1. something that you can get multiple days off for interviews
2. something that you are going to learn something
3. something that will let you take time off for the holidays
4. etc

I did an ICU month at St. John's. No complaints about it, they were very accommodating for time off for the holidays and interviews (but most of my interviews were in Nov. and Jan.)

a combination of 1-3. med & law, forensic path are filled.

I wish we could take fun undergrad-type classes for electives, like golf or cooking. That would rock my world.

I'm baking brownies right now. They will be awesome.:biglove:

yeah i so want to take a video games elective.... to prepare me for a surgical career.... even though i am not doing surgery....

8 days till the end on 3rd year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From we thankful 3rd years: Does anyone have a copy of the secret document regarding the end of year 3 OSCE? We would greatly appreciate it 🙂

me too, me too!

I posed this question over at the premed thread as well but I was curious about the Corktown and/or Lafayette Park areas? What's your impression about them? Would these be decent places to be for years 1 and 2? Thanks!

i don't know about corktown.... but i'm living in LT and have enjoyed it thus far. there's a bunch of med students, its close to school, and traffic is always bad going the opposite of where i'm going. if you're living downtown: riverfront and harbor town are also nice.

some of the downs: have to go to the burbs for groceries and things tend to close early (once all the business people head out after work).

but, living downtown is great. i recommend it. 🙂

oh yeah, lafayette towers is okay. just beware that if you live on the west side of the towers (the best view) you will pay because it is like a greenhouse in the summer. the AC (at least in my apartment) does not work that well.... plus high electric bills. After living 30-40 mins away for the first 2 years of med school, i would definitely recommend living downtown. i hate driving so much....

hey guys,

i was wondering what you find good about WSM vs what you dont like or what needs to be changed. Thanks.

I'll leave answering this question to the folks on here that still have to deal with the various issues.
However, you must realize:
1. that a complete list (for both categories) will be quite long.
2. that almost by definition med students are a bunch of whiners (myself included)
3. what is a good thing for one person will not be for another
4. repeat #3 but focusing on the negatives instead of the positives.

Do many people have to remediate the end of 3rd year OSCE?

Just wondering how likely it will be that I may or may not have to come back from vacation to remediate 🙂

Boo OSCE's👎. Hooray Beer!👍

Can anyone give me information about orientation week? What do you do for a whole week (other than filling out paper work, getting schedules, etc) and is it a full day thing? I am getting so excited to start school soon!

Also, when did you gets get information about the scholarships you can apply for? I believe the website says August..does the financial aid committee just readjust your loan status if you get some scholarships?

I hate the time of limbo!! And while I am enjoying my summer, sometimes I just wish I could get started already!

You were supposed to apply for the scholarships on the financial aid office. When your FAFSA was complete with parental info they would consider you. The deadline for 1st years was a few months ago.

I applied a while ago, but I was just wondering when I would hear about them. I hate the unknown...I like to be able to plan ahead, especially in my financial life! 😉

Orientation is going to be different this year from the last (they're constantly revamping), but this past year it was full days every day. Some of the things they did: tour of school scav hunt , tour of detroit, introduction to course directors, intro to co-curricular, question/answer with MS2 about courses, "Diversity Day", and ending with the White Coat Ceremony. There were some other things, but I don't really remember it all.

I remember being where you were and being ready to start... You'll enjoy it, but it's a bit of a change once you start.

Good luck. Enjoy your summer!!!

OSCE's smell like butt. 8 minutes is NOT enough time. I hate OSCE's.

Hi-

Incoming MS1 physical form says nothing about drug testing. I couldn't find it elsewhere on the site either. Will we be drug tested during orientation or required to do this before-hand? And FYI, this is a marijuana-related question. I believe it can stay in one's system for up to 3 months! Thanks.🙄

never been tested

never been tested

yeah... i don't remember that being on our form at all (but it might have been). i cannot imagine them drug testing anyone during orientation though...

but, i'd play it safe until you're clear of orientation week.

I was wondering, during first year, since lectures are available online, what labs and stuff do you absolutely have to be at school for, and roughly how often do they happen each week. I ask this because I remember someone mentioning during my pre-interview tour that they wouldnt have come to school if they didnt have to do the tour that day since they can watch the lectures from home.

during anatomy/histology.... expect to be at school at least 3x per week. after that it's sporadic.... the next big chunk of lab doesn't come until the end of the year (neuro)... then, it's about 1-2x per week. there was one week during genetics/neuro that there was something for 4 of the days that required attendance.

but even then, there are few that actually record attendance (genetics does).. and 1 panel for clin med; however, some things are not streamed.

does anyone know the phone number of the financial aid office? i have sexy phone calls to make as sexily as possible.

thanks!

Financial Aid: (313) 577-1039

By the way, there were two weeks were we had to be at school every day at the end of the year for neuro/clin med/genetics due to required labs, small group sessions, patient panels, and the osce as ksav has said.

Speaking of FinAid... is anyone else still waiting for their award email? Cause I'm pretty sure I've been "under review" for about 2 months... and I'm not typically a shady person.

Anyone else?😕

so anatomy lab is only 3x per week? How many people actually attend lectures? Did you find it better to stream or to actually go and listen and then watch the stream to review or catch pieces you missed?

i went to class through anatomy and histology, but then i found that i liked sleeping in and watching the lectures on my own time... depends on how social of a person you are or how involved you want to be in the class. You can do well either way. I had a friend a couple years ahead of me who did nothing school related until 6-7 days before the exam. He then watched all the lectures and read along in the notes with the lectures in 1 week. He was not the top student in the class by any means, but he maintained avg grades, passed and only had to devote ~1 week/month to school during the first year.

during anatomy and histo about 2/3 of the class attended... after that about 1/3 (on a good day). it basically comes down to what type of a learner you are: i learned better in class and therefore went.... it was also helpful with the whole social aspect (some streamers i know wouldn't leave their houses for days.. i couldn't do that, i'd go crazy).

I was wondering whether lecture notes are made available online or whether you have to purchase printed out copies of the notes. The reason I ask is that if the notes are available online it might justify myself goign for a tablet PC otherwise the function wouldnt be of much use to me.

Everyone has to pay a fee during registration of something like $550 (was 1050 before) for the notes. They'll pass them out on paper at the start of every unit. They are available online as pdfs but they lock them so that you can't print them (there are ways around this)

On that note, in my class some of the streamers still came to school everyday and just went to the cafeteria or MD labs to stream/study. That way they still had lunch with people, could easily attend activities and just see classmates.

there were times that the notes were not available online until days after the lecture, but you did get the paper copies (as already mentioned).

my advice: get a mac... but i'm partial. 🙂

Since it seems that Wayne State is adopting the new strategy for its 3rd year clinical rotations of having them all at the same hospital. I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to list the hospitals that Wayne is associated with and one could potentially end up spending all of 3rd year at. I am familiar with Henry Ford and the DMC, is that all or are there other hospitals as well?

The bolded hospitals are the ones most of our rotations take place. Did I miss any?

The DMC:
Detroit Receiving
Harper
Hutzel
Childrens
Sinai Grace

Kresge
Rehab institute of michigan
Huron-Valley Sinai

VA - Detroit

Henry Ford

St. Johns

Beaumont

Oakwood

Providence

St Joes -- Pontiac

St Joes -- Ann Arbor

Crittenton

I'd make one change - Beaumont will go away soon - they are the hospital for the new medical school that Oakland University is opening.

That's for sure. I know that beaumont is being used at least next year, but what my sources have told me (site directors for particular rotations), the number of slots will decrease for some rotations next year.

At our externship orientation they made it sound like they were going to continue their relationship with WSUSOM even when the school starts (which isn't until 2010ish)... So it'll be around for at least a little while more.... but probably with reduced spots available.

I think Beaumont would keep slots open until their first class started their third year (I hope this makes some sense) but it would be at least until 2013 before that happens.

Agreed. School doesn't open for another couple years then they have to be third year before rotating. By the time that happens it will be at least 2012 and everyone including next year's first year class will already have graduated.

FYI - just perusing through the OU/Beaumont websites and tentatively the first class will have ~50 students. So, once established in the short term, at a given time they'll have about ~100 medical students roaming their hospitals.

How many Wayne medical students are there now at given time?

I can vouch for
4 in neuro
4 in medicine

Wayne also has rotations in Surgery, Ped's and a random number of electives. We don't do OB there (as far as I remember) and I don't know about family.

I can't imagine there are more than 35 of us at Beaumont during any one month... which is far less than I imagined. Regardless, the site director for medicine (attending who will be one of the heads of the new school) did say that when the OU/Beaumont school is up and running with their own students in rotations, they would at least have fewer spaces for wayne students.

What time and day is the white coat ceremony usually on? My parents have been bugging me for this and I cant seem to find any info on the WSU website....

yeah... mine were too last year. i'm pretty sure ours was on friday of orientation. maybe at like 2 pm?

i actually talked to Dr. Musich, the director of med education at Beaumont. He said Beaumont usually has around 20-25 students per month at Beaumont from wayne. He said they signed on to the clinical campus for 5 years, for 24 students. They severed their ties with U of M (they used to rotate there for Oby/Gyn and Psych) and said after the 5 years they dont know what they will do. They plan on increasing the teaching capacity at their troy and grosse point locations, so they might have spots for wayne in the future.
Also, he mentioned talking to Dr. Frank about the clinical campus and he said so far
Henry ford-signed up for 60 students (also severing ties with UM)
Oakwood-50 students (supposedly also severed ties with UM)
St Josephs Ann Arbor-30 students (cutting down on UM students)
Providence-30 students
St Johns-hasnt committed yet but assumes they will because providence did, so probably around 30 students
Beaumont-24 students
VA- wasnt exactly sure, but he says probably 20.

Thats around 240 students, so either DMC has to take the other 70, or they will have to look for other hospitals. He mentioned that they visited a hospital in Saginaw, a teaching hospital down in Toledo (they are having problems with Univ of Toledo), and a hospital in flint.
Another problem is that Dr. Musich said they never brought up the whole 2 student per team thing in the contracts, so that can be another issue.
Providence could also be a problem because Wayne doesnt want mixing of caribbean and wayne students, and they take a TON of caribbean students.

Dr. Jackson was telling me that they are working to develop a stronger affiliation with Henry Ford, and that Henry ford has already said that they feel their future is with Wayne (hopefully this actually plays out) and that they will be able to handle more students in the future.
I am doing research right now, and the surgeon I work with says that henry ford will plan in the future to accomodate over 50% of our class. Im not sure how that will work, but he says they would be able to no problem if they stop taking students from other schools. I guess they are looking for stronger ties with Wayne now that Beaumont is getting its own med school.

Seeing how the only constant at WSU is change ksav may be correct.
However, I was remembering the white coat ceremony as falling on the Sat AM at the end of the orientation week.
Speaking of orientation... I am getting so sick of sitting through it this week. This is bad enough that I am actually almost starting to look forward to my first night on call.

If WSU is going to try to avoid the caribbean students they are will probably run into some problems.

I know that I worked with a few at Ford (not many but some did rotations there). And worked with a bunch more at St. John's (which I think has an agreement is at least one caribbean school).

you might be right on the saturday thing and timing... i have a really faulty memory at this point (i blame rillema and lightbody for all changes in cognition over the past year).
