anyone else think the year 3 OSCE scores were a little ridiculous?

I think it would have definitely been more helpful to have examples of the things I missed instead of just knowing I missed some points in an area or had a red flag.

one thing you'll learn is: disbursemnet does not equal money in your account.

i think it was a few weeks into school until i got mine. but if you need money for rent.... you might go to the office and ask them to print you up a thing saying the money is on the way. most places are understanding that you can't make your fin aid magically appear for them.

If you log into pipeline and see that you have a negative balance, then a financial aid check will soon be yours. Within a week of a negative balance appearing, a check will be sent to you (they may cut checks more often than once per week, but I'm not sure). If you get direct deposit, it is a little faster b/c you don't have to wait for the check to be mailed.

No. The flat lot costs $2.75 (I believe). You'd have to go to school 182 times in order to make it worth the $500 price tag!

2nd year I just payed for the flat lot. You can load up your onecard on pipeline and swipe to pay. very convenient.

Just make sure you pay using your one card -- otherwise the price is something like $3.50 if you use cash 😱 (You can also park in the old kresge structure for $2.50 or something like that)

the price has dropped to 2.25 when you use a onecard for the flat lot...

last year someone figured out that in order for the parking pass to be worth it (i.e. saves money over the flat lot), you would have to go to school at least 1x per day (M-F).

if you live downtown, or plan on studying at SH on weeknights/weekends, it's a better deal.

otherwise... just pay for the flat lot.

It's almost never worth buying the parking pass unless you are going to basically come to school every day. You will also never use the PDA or any of the textbooks they recommend either.

Ah - just wait for the days when you've stupidly chosen a surgery sub I at DRH and you get to work at 5 am and get out at 2 pm the next day, then do it all again two days later.

I thought 4th year was supposed to be fun 🙁

It can be...

It's all about rotation choice and timing.
My surg Sub-I (not at DRH) spoiled me😀, with it's light call schedule (but that was partly my team, as someone that did the same sub-I a few months later had a horrible time).

Well it was interesting being back in lectures (since I have been out of school for 4 years) but I love how nice and friendly everyone is! My lab group is amazing!! I am not sure how I am going to retain all this info we are learning but so far I am still happy that I chose to me a Doctor!

MDrunner- have you tried any of the quizzes on black board yet? I accidentally took the unit 1 quiz instead of the week one quiz first, and yikes! I got some more books to hit. I also thought that the quiz for the week was missing pictures for some of the questions, like it referred to a letter and said "what one other than D" would be affected, so I took a blind stab at them. Hopefully the test wont be as confusing, or at least have the picture that is being referenced. What lab table are you at?

Must be one of those areas were the only constant at WSU (change) is in play - since no such thing existed back in the day. Unless you are talking about some of the old exams.

we have those too, although the faculty keeps trying to tell us not to use them because of format, ect. Yeah, they post a quiz on blackboard at the end of every week so you can see how you are doing, kind of a neat feature

(Especially unit III). Last year there was no unit II netanatomy for head and neck but now there is. It should really help you. (You have to be on a computer at school or using the vpn. (vpn.med.wayne.edu and sign in. Then type www.netanatomy.com into the address bar.)

HAH! I am also questioning my sanity...I start my sub-I on Sept 1. Blue at DRH *whimper* Q3. Anybody have any tips for dealing w/Diebel? I have already survived the L's.

Sept is my fun month - I turn "29" (again). Elise turns 2. I have to figure out when to fit in a b-day party for her. I have a wedding to attend, for which I hope that I'm not on call - if so I will have to miss is and that would suck. There is something else that I can't remember right now...

I am sooo glad that OCT will be Radi-holiday at HFH!

You won't retain all of it... you will retain very little.... and it doesn't matter. The real important stuff is 2nd year.

As for me... 4th year is going GREAT. Filling out this ERAS stuff kinds of suck.... but at least I am almost done with it.

I took the Histo week 1 quiz and it was pretty easy (IMO). I am going to do the anatomy one today after the review. I am at table 16 in the lab, where are you at? 🙂

continue your other interests and hobbies... take time to do those things everyday. for me it was video games, going out with friends, golf that got me through. you may have more time to do these things, if you homeschool yourself... but you also have to have the motivation to keep up and stay efficient!

That's good advice for life in general. My mom would always say to never wish the days away. It's true, because before you know it the best years of your life will have passed. Despite the tests and studying this is a great time of our lives because we have a huge amount of independence. Honestly, with streaming you can do whatever you want instead of having to go to class like undergrad.

I am completely clueless when it comes to the business aspect of medicine - a facet which has always held very little appeal for me. But considering the fact that I cannot see myself working for someone else - I am def. freaked out at my own ignorance when it comes to anything business-related. Would greatly appreciate any advice on how to handle this. Is there any business-related training in 3rd or 4th year? Or during residency? Or are we pretty much left to our own devices?

own devices. you kind of have to learn from other people as you go along. if you want a general business education, i have heard that there are great books out there that you can read to get a self-taught MBA education... if you want something more specific, you will learn bits and pieces as you go along.

I've seen some residency programs like peds at CHM and IM at oakwood have seminars as a part of their grand rounds or morning reports on how the business of billing works, and strategies to maximze your reimbursement.

I'm sure that there are fast track business master's degrees that you can get as an MD, some residency programs will even give you a paid year to do this or a research project. I know of one person who is doing this and getting a master of public policy.

I have 2 of my letters in now... however neither of them are the ones by the doc's in my specialty of choice. I feel really nervous like they aren't going to come through. I emailed both of them today -- hopefully they can get the letters in soon.

If I can have just 1 of the 2 letters in by application day, I will feel happy because at least my application will be complete (yes I know you don't have to have all of your letters in by sept 1).

I hate not being in control -- it drives me absolutely nutz. (nutz>>nuts)

Other than that, my application is pretty set and I'm meeting with Lynette on the 2nd to finalize.

I just realized that I have to finalize my LOR writers in the LOR page, then I can see if they came in on the Post Office page...grrr...seems a little strange to me. So I have no idea if any of my letters are in yet.

Good news - I have my (not-ERAS) CV finished, I have my PS finished, I have all of my basic contact, CV, PS, etc...loaded into ERAS.

Good/Bad - I start my sub-I on 9/1 (which I am on call that day), so I have to wait until the end of which for yet another letter, for which I have to wait for them to write it....etc...

My experience: Having the CV done makes the ERAS take muuuucccchhh less time -- you can do it in a few spare hours after step 2 next weekend... speaking of step 2 -- Good luck! you'll do great! (I dont' have mine until the end of september)

The ERAS wasn't too bad IMO... I am basically done with my PS which is a huge relief. And fellow 4th years- Step 2 wasn't that bad, don't stress too much!! I took it in June with a bunch of people taking step 1 and they were so stressed out it was kind of cute... just remember, you made it through step one and it was way worse!! Wayne prepares us SO much better for step 2👍

yeah... kind of an emergency 🙁 🙁 I didnt hear it though! I don't know if it went through where i was or if i was just deaf... i didnt hear it... at least i know now they did try to get a hold me... i hate that my cell phone doesnt work in most areas of the hospital.

i am pretty much read to submit my application. i have 3 out of 4 letters in. filled out eras and completed PS.... the hting that makes me mad is that each time i read my application i find a stupid mistake, like a missing apostrophe. i can't wait to be done with this stuff!

wayne prepares us better? or is it that we finally had standardized exams with published books to study from instead of the less-than-perfect course packs and school exams? i felt that i learned a lot, but mostly because of that fact... however, i felt i was scutted a lot... and i learned more this year from reading, rather than doing :/ hence my choice of specialty i guess a lot of the lectures we had were more relevant and interesting than the first year stuff...

agreed... any advice for how to conquer this material would be greatly appreciated, because as it stands now, Nailor's Qs are going to do very bad things to me.

I'm looking at charts in First Aid and Clin Micro made ridiculously easy and then making my own to study from with all the nuances he added. I think the biggest issue with studying from the notes is that they are too spread out and you can't easily compare what bug is treated by what drug and what drug covers which bugs on a few pages to look through. Then once you have a good clean chart with side effects and mech of action just study it over and over again. Honestly other than his lectures we haven't had much of anything difficult at all in micro. (So far in this first week out of two for micro).
