WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha I'm exactly the same!

On a side note, does anyone know what the class/lab etc schedule is like in first year? Are all the classes grouped together (ie we would attend from 8 to 3pm type of idea) or would we have breaks in between?

I think you get a lunch break, but that's it. They also have it so you're spending two days at the Foothills campus and two days at the Spy Hill campus and the fifth day is a mix of various things. I don't know the exact hours though.

I am trying really hard not to freak out...has anyone from Manitoba got an invite? Last year, a friend of mine got her invite last week of March and she got in. Thanks.

Good luck to everyone at UCVM interviews tomorrow :luck: Relax and be confident!

Escalla, you've got this! 🙂

Knock 'em dead, guys!! Well, not literally. That would, of course, be illegal. And probably not promising to your application either.

Haha thanks for the laugh, needed that! Good luck everyone!

Well guys, I think I improved a ton this year. It's amazing how going through it last year drastically reduced my anxiety levels. How'd the rest of you feel?

Even if I am not successful, I'm still really happy with improvement. Now we just have to somehow manage until June. 😀

I'm glad for you, Escalla! How did it go for everyone else?

I thought it went well! I liked my essay. I babbled through the first three stations, but I wouldn't change the content of any of my answers....

190 interviewed this year though, yikes! did anyone go on the tour?? campus was beautiful...

Are you sure on the number interviewed? It's normally broken up in 64 in each session (32 do essay first, 32 MMI) for a total of 128. 😕

Yes I went on the tour after and the dean told us this year it was 190, and that 75 people didn't qualify for interviews. And that the goal is to get take on even more interviews in the future.... why they need to interview hundreds of people for 30 seats is beyond me!

Seriously....that is just ridiculous. So much for the 1/4 shot! 🙁

Where are all these people coming from?! It seems like it gets more and more competitive every year...if it keeps up, in a couple years, getting into vet school is gonna be damn near impossible unless you're a member of MENSA, started volunteering with animals at the age of 3, captained at least 4 sports, chaired at least 2 committees, served as a super hero at night, blah blah blah!

hahaha like any of those things would even matter... I noticed there was ZERO opportunity to talk about any personal strengths or experiences 🙁 that weren't animal related of course. If I was a super hero at night, I wouldn't have got the chance to tell them that! Unless of course I snuck it into unrelated conversation, which I sort of tried to do anyways this round... 😉

Although the ratio is in theory "worse", remember that they just because they are interviewing extra people doesn't make their grades any better, so you still probably have advantages over other people if you got an interview last year... its not like its a true "1/6" chance, its not totally random, we may be the strong ones 😎

Hahaha 👍

Anyone else interviewing on May 1 that's planning on attending the tour? I've never officially gone on one, so I'm going to check it out this year. Looking forward to it!

Hi everyone,

I am just wondering for those who have finished all their pre-req and didn't get an interview offer, does it mean they are out for this year? Thanks!

Hi everyone,

They still have to send out 2nd round invites which will be in mid-May. So it's not over yet!!! :xf: :luck:

Thanks! But how does that work? I failed to qualify for 1st round interview, why would I qualify for 2nd round?

2nd round is just a separate set that's later on. It's not at all related to 1st round, so you don't have to worry. 🙂

Of the applicants that are left (after 1st rounds go out), they then decide who to give interviews to and then send out invites in May.

Once 2nd round invitations have been extended, the little status/news window on your application status page will state that all invites have been extended. They will provide written feedback in June, but that pretty much lets you know.

Thanks Escalla! Do you have any idea who get these 1st round interview then?

No idea on how it's decided. That's something I'd like to know as well since I too have all of my prereqs done.

It's likely based on grades, but I don't know anything for sure.

2nd rounds get accepted though too, so no worries there. 👍

Yeah, it just means you have to try that's much harder to get in, I assume. Do you get a 1st round interview?

Nope, I'm waiting until May as well. :scared:

Are you still going to school? I was done all of my prereqs last year when I applied, but they still wanted my spring grades before an interview was extended. I was 2nd round last year.

If anyone feels like joining in on a WW game (it's super fun!!!), we need 1 more to sign-up for Ghostbusters!!!! 😀

Hi Escalla, I actually had an engineering degree from
10 years ago, then went back to school to get all my pre-reqs in the last 2 years, I aced every single courses but my old GPAs (engineering) pull my overall grade down to 74.9%. Currently, I am working with the ruminant group at the university as a technical in Manitoba, so taking a year off to establish my residency here...I seriously hope I get a second round

So, I don't know, they have all my grades, no need to wait (I.e. best year). So maybe I just not qualify this year

Ok, cool!!!!! Don't count yourself out yet, things are far from over! 🙂

I graduated last year, so they have everything from me as well. We just have to hang tight until the 2nd week in May. :luck:

Good luck Escalla! Hopefully we will be classmate at the WCVM! If you don't mind me asking, what's your grades like?

Thanks! Good luck to you as well!!! :luck:🙂 I really hope we get to be classmates too!!!

It really depends on what they do with re-takes as I started off the first two years of undergrad not so well. Transferred to the U.S. and essentially started over there. So counting everything probably around 80%, but I really have no idea since I haven't bothered truly calculating it.

I posted in the other forum before reading this one, but basically I was told that all applicants within each province are ranked based on GPA and best full year so you're basically numbered 1-80 or however many people applied from your province. From there, if they're interviewing 40 people they will cut the number in half and do 1-20 first round and 21-40 second round.

I was told an interview is the only thing based on GPA and that once you have an interview they look at your application, experiences, references, etc. so getting first round doesn't necessarily mean you have a big advantage over those in second round (but it does mean your GPA is slightly better haha).

Last year from Sask. I knew as many people from first round who got in as I knew who interviewed in second round and between two of them their GPAs were at very different ends of the scale lol..

Wow! So that means those of us that got first round WCVM interviews are in the top 20 GPA for our whole province?? Thats quite impressive! I mean, considering that like 100+ apply...I really hope you're right 😛

Well last year for Sask. there were only 57 people who applied because in the feedback letter it said my ranking out of 57. But I'm sure Alberta and BC applicant numbers were higher and this year they got a bunch more applicants in total so that number has probably increased..

Well, that certainly explains why people jump provinces to Sask....

Alberta was 132 last year and with the report that ~265 applied to UCVM, that number definitely went up. I'm sure some of those only applied to UCVM, but geez that's high compared to Saskatchewan.....

And then those people beat out myself and others who have lived here our whole lives 🙁 haha. I wonder if it came down to someone who moved here for residency and someone who lived here for a their whole life or a good chunk of their life if it would play a part in their decision on who they chose? Who knows..

But I guess with Alberta having 3x the people, the ratios kind of make sense but I still feel bad for you!!

Does UCVM provide feedback letters too? Does it contain anything besides a ranking? Like where you were weakest? or if you smelled bad?

Yeah, that's an interesting point.

What really is weird about our schooling system is that while the provincial governments pay for these seats, there's no guarantee that the graduates of those seats will remain to work in that province. I don't see how Alberta benefits if I attend WCVM in the Alberta pool and then immediately decide I want to work in BC or Ontario.

In the U.S., the state governments that sponsor seats require graduates to return to the state and work a minimum of 3 years there usually. It's nice that we don't have that requirement, but I always found it odd.

They provide your general range in each category compared to the rest of the pool that you can look up when they post the admission statistics (a series of bar graphs). So prereq GPA, last 2 years, MMI and essay.

Hey! I'm from Manitoba and haven't heard anything yet either... Keep me posted if/ when you do and i'll do the same! Starting to get nervous..

Hi, they have sent out all first round interview for Manitoba too, so we'll have to wait and hope for second round interview. Do you mind me asking what's your GPA is like?

I dunno. My friend got in last year, and she told them straight up in the interview that she moved here to increase her odds, because she had never been offered an interview as an AB applicant (WCVM OR UCVM). I don't think they really care, because it's not ideal in the sense that even IF all people in SK seats WERE from SK, they may not all stay after graduation. Same is true of AB/BC/MB because people lay down roots after being 4 years in Saskatoon... It's a real crapshoot.
I agree that it's frustrating! But I do my part, in trying to persuade people to go to MB 😉 It's slightly less competitive than SK... but you know, who wants to move TWICE. 😛

Or Northwest Territories 🙂!! Sask. probably has as much snow....

Honestly, if I'm not successful this year I will likely jump provinces. I don't know where yet, but I while I love Calgary, I just cannot sit on my butt for much longer.

That being said, I have an interview at what could possibly be my dream job next week, so that may hold me back and keep me here.

Thanks Escalla! Do you have any idea who get these 1st round interview then?

I think it is solely based on grades. The top 20 or so people when they do their ranking initially will get first round interviews.

Everyone else is given a chance to improve their grades in the winter semester to make that cut off. Interviews are handed out to the high ranked grades. The number of people interviewed in total varies per province, with AB getting the most due to the competition for students with UCVM.

I think in general they interview twice the number of accepted. So if you receive an interview it's a 50:50 chance of being accepted.

Not sure if that helps you now. It will if you are in classes currently that you can use to boost your grades.

Although I don't know all my classmates well enough to know their backgrounds, only one province jumper from AB to SK got accepted.

Thanks LeilaFay! So you're saying if I am taking this year off and I am not offered an interview. I am
out? Because I can't improve my grades?

Haha! I posted before reading this one - sorry guys!

It's true. Ironically, the same person who moved from AB to SK last year (if we're talking about the same person) had second round. So there you have it! (Also, if we ARE talking about the same person, she had smokin' experience, and definitely deserved it.)

We may be thenuttyclub! I agree, she has earned that seat!

I guess where I stand is, the only thing that you as an applicant can do is improve on yourself - you cannot control how the interviewers feel about you, you cannot control the number of people applying from your province that are directly competing with you, and you cannot control their level of experience, GPA and ability to talk through an interview.

What you CAN control is yourself! Work on yourself and improving yourself. Ask yourself, what is it about my application this round that they didn't like?

For me, it was my grades first - ok. I'll work on those. I went back to school.
When I got an interview and didn't get accepted, I asked myself again. What is it about ME? What can I do better next time?

I never thought there was an issue with someone else. I always thought there is an issue with me - so what can I do to change me?
