WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
to clarify how this works, its 2/3 total GPA (in %) and 1/3 your BEST year's gpa
prereqs aren't counted any heavier than other courses but are just pooled in with your total gpa 🙂 a check it off that it has been completed
Hope that helps!

The Dean had previously told me that for B.C residents, you now need an 81-83% (with about 89%? best year? ) in order to be considered for the first round of interviews. :scared:

Ok, thanks for posting! I'm probably mixing UCVM/WCVM. Do you know how retakes are factored in to cumulative GPAs?

I would assume that they just consider how the new retake affects your cumulative GPA, but your old score doesn't necessarily get deleted off the records kind of thing? In BC it's really rare for a university to allow you to retake a course unless it's an F grade so I don't think WCVM has a policy for that- it would be worth checking with them to make sure though!

How do they define best year? Top two semesters? Do they have to be consecutive? Is it the sept - april year or "2012"? Top 20 coureses? :/

If I remember correctly, they average the two grades.

I had a 81.9% with an 86% best year and I was in the second round ... yikes. Hopefully I end up getting an interview again with the BILLION* APPLICANTS THIS YEAR

*400ish

Hey guys... first week of march starts tomorrow...
let the obsessive checking begin!

First week of March is officially upon us! I wish you all the best of luck - the good vibes are being sent from this guy *points to self* 😍:luck:

Ok folks. Let's remember that the subset of applicants who sought out this forum are probably all caffiene-crazed, obsessive, overly-analytical types. That being said, we need to just KCCO. There's a lot of time left before June (which is the REAL date to panic about, since we're all going to knock 'em dead in interviews!)
A-disease-called-awesome.jpg

Good luck to all those AB folks! I hope you hear good news this week!

Haha, damn Roll up the Rim is on too 😛

This waiting game is torture! For UCVM, those invited for interviews have until Friday to respond, so it really will be any hour now that they'll send them out & we'll find out who advances to the next stage...:scared:

I know D:
I'm checking here frequently too to see if any of you get it so I'll know I miss the boat haha. It is pretty much torture though. I just want to know haha, I have exams to study for an I can't concentrate!

I am not freaking out right now...Nope, going to be patient until I hear something.... :scared:

Congrats you guys! Me too 😀 Now just to ace the interviews...

Oh dear, I skimmed the email and I was scared for a second there. Invitation recieved! whew, avoided 1 heart attack, just a few more to go....

Crap, am I the only one who didn't get an email? Brutal.

I didn't get one either, maplegal 🙁

I've noticed they extended the date of confirmation to a week from now, so maybe they aren't done sending emails yet?? Either way you still have a chance for WCVM 🙂

I got an invite as well! Good luck to those still waiting. Don't give up hope! I'm sure they're on the way!

WCVM question! Does it the "final decision" really become available on the webpage when the little button lights up?? That seems super nerve wracking hah. Also does anyone know how many WCVM interviews?

You'll receive an email saying final decision has been made and then yes, you can click that button. Roughly 40 interviews for AB I believe.

Oh wow! 40 interviews? I guess its much harder to get an interview but once you get one, your odds go way up hey. Any idea how many Albertans apply? and I wouldn't suppose anyone knows anything about how competitive the education equity seats are... anyone else applying for those?

I don't know how many apply, I'm afraid. Numbers have gone up too, so who knows what the plan is.

I have an email. Scared to open it. What are the chances of it being a rejection letter. My sister is coming over at 5, at my request to help me open it... But I'm nervous

You should open it! You're going to drive yourself nuts all day....🙁

Good luck to all of those people applying to the UCVM! Does anyone have an idea when WCVM sends out their emails?

If you have a peek at your application, it says in the little information box now. It's approximate, but it'll give you an idea.

Generally they interview double the # accepted. Except AB, they interview a few more - 45ish? Because they take into consideration that some who get accepted also get accepted into UCVM, and sometimes choose UCVM over WCVM.

It's been 100+ from AB, fewer than those that apply to UCVM.

I don't know about equity seats.

So I'm out of the running for UCVM. I took 3 of the required courses online & they said they aren't equivalent to the prerequisites - which is funny, because they're fine for WCVM. It was a gamble - they would only look at the syllabi to determine equivalence after they received an application...which means I enrolled in the Ecology prereq & spent $800 on it, only to be mid-way through it & told it's not good enough. Pretty frigging frustrating! Anyhow, I figured I'd forward on some advice from a friend who's in 3rd year at UCVM.

When you're answering the essay, regardless of what it's about, think RELATIONSHIPS. As in, building relationships with clients etc. There's an entire course in first year, I think, that teaches you solely how to communicate with & build relationships/trust with clients. So that really is a biggie. Also, a huge thing they focus on is PREVENTION rather than cure - so mention that too. Definitely tweak your essays/interviews to include these two aspects! She said she thought the essays for the past 2 years have generally been about the role veterinarians play today in large animal medicine, so you might wanna start thinking about that too.

I might get some slack for posting this, but we're all here to help each other as best we can, right? The advice is no good to me anymore, but I really hope it's helpful to you guys. Knock 'em dead 🙂

That would make me so mad!!! 😡 I'm sorry that you had to spend that money only have them not accept the course. 🙁 I really appreciate you passing your friend's advice on. 🙂 I'm hoping that WCVM will send you some good news soon! :xf: :luck:

Thanks babe. You're welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear that. I hope you get another interview for WCVM!

It's the better school anyway! 😉 - I know I'm biased 😉

Ha, no I got rejected - but here's what's super irritating: my letter said that I didn't meet the minimum requirement for the 10 pre-requisite courses. But I do. In fact I came back to school just so I could re-do my pre-reqs, I even have the emails from UCVM that state that they will take the higher mark of 2 attempts. So, I'm drafting an email to send to admissions inquiring about this. I'm wondering if they factored in my previous attempts to courses that I'm currently enrolled in, in which case they should have told me that I should wait to apply until completing 2nd attempts. Sooooo frustrated! Similar, but not the same to your situation, maplegal - which I am sitting here getting angry for you. Ugh. Hopefully WCVM goes better but I don't have a lot of hope for that one in my situation. I'm just not sure how I'm supposed to atone for mistakes I made as a 19/20 year old - I would think that my transcript shows that I've improved as a student and obviously increased in maturity. 😡😡😡😡

I am so sorry jmf 🙁 Definitely see what is going on with Admissions. My first two years of undergrad were horrible and I basically re-took everything once I transferred to the states and started completely over. I ended up staying there for four years because I enjoyed it so much, but it's definitely possible to atone for screw-ups made early on. Don't give up on WCVM yet. You can do this!!! 👍👍👍:luck:

To those who have been offered a WCVM interview before.... do they do it all on one day like calgary? What day was it on last year?

You will either get a 1st or 2nd round interview and it's over a series of days. The schedule is on your WCVM status page.

Yeah I've seen the schedule but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything from experience 😛

In the meantime, UCVM interviewees, I've come across a study that was done by the same researcher who we are signing consent for this year as we interview. Its on the UCVM interview process, and I found it insightful to read over... addresses the main key traits they are evaluating, etc. I think its called something super similar to his new study. I had to get it through my university library, though.

Also, essay questions, I know they have a tendency to be geared towards large animal medicine, but would you say it's general enough that its possible to do decently if you only have a general sense of the field? Or should I be researching like mad 😎

Okay, well I think invites came out first for Sask. (for the first round, anway, not too sure about second round). I found my e-mail I had saved that they had sent notifying me of my interview invite and the date last year was March 21st. From what I can remember from people posting on here from different provinces, the rest of the invites came out within the next 2-3 days after that? That was my first year applying so I'm not sure if that is how it goes every year or just that particular cycle. Either way, the first round ones should be coming out for everyone around that same time (a.k.a. two more weeks of waiting!:scared:)

Thanks! I prob can relax on the email checking for a few weeks then 😛
