WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yah I agree, it was said that they basically just take the top however many they are going to interview (based on marks) so if your marks are up to par then it is likely you will get an interview. Im just hoping that the increase in applicants means that there will still be relatively the same ratio of GPA's as the previous years and not just more "4.0s" applying hahah.

240? Well that kind of makes me a little sick to my stomach, but more than half of that will get interviewed so that's kind of nice. 🙂 Dose anyone know how many applicants from each province there were to WCVM? (I'm more interested in AB, but for curiosity sake woul like to know other provinces)

I don't know the province breakdown, but it was published in WCVM Today that we are up to 400 hundred applicants this year from 340. So there's probably increases all around. 🙁

Yeah, hopefully things don't jump around too much. Hoping for the top 128! :xf:

By professionally does that mean like business casual everyday or can you wear jeans and nice tops, etc.?

You can pretty much wear whatever you want. It's typical university undergrad attire. The only time there's really a dress code is during fourth year in Small Animal Medicine or if you're working in the Small Animal Clinic where you're expected to be business casual (although even as a summer student, no one said anything if you wore nice jeans instead of dress pants occasionally).

The day has come when everything is finally due ...

and we can start mindlessly checking the status page for updates 15x daily.

I'm going to be better this year and not let it consume my life! Maybe....I'll try anyways. Come mid-March I doubt I'll be able to control myself.

Yeah. That's a whole can of worms I don't want to open just yet. I did check to be sure both of my references were received, but beyond that I'm trying to stay away. In the meantime, I'm just trying to force myself to read the newspaper. Anyone find any interesting current events/articles that are worth reading?

Guess what guys?? It's almost March!!! 😀 😀 😀

Bumping this thread for excitement/nerves/anxiety reasons 😉

13 days!!! huff huff huff
Not going to lie, been a ball of nerves - hardly able to eat.
Nuttyclub - I like watching Philip DeFranco on youtube, he covers major international and US news stories. Plus I have things like ABVMA on my twitter 🙂

Hey, that sounds like a great idea! I don't use my twitter for much... I probably should consider that. Also, I'm not sure that 13 days is quite enough. Last year, I was in Mexico at the start of March, and didn't hear about my interview until around the 10/11th. And it was on the 20 something-th. So... 13+ days. Just to make things more tense. :meanie:

They are stating on their website that we have until March 8th to accept or decline. So hopefully that means it will be early March this year.

That being said, their website also stated the app would be available in October...which didn't happen. 🙄

On the message thing on the application it says notifications for interviews aren't until mid-late March and then not until end of April-early May for first round interviews. I remember last year I got an email on March 26th because it was my friends birthday haha. Soo I think it's still a ways away...

Sorry, it's my fault for not stating in my original post that I was referring to UCVM.

I would like to hurry up and hear from WCVM though too! 😀

Is it just me, or does it seem by WCVM's interview schedule that all first-round interviews are taking place is Saskatoon? :scared:

I think you get a choice? I dunno for sure though. Hopefully someone can confirm. 🙂

I interrupt this interview notification discussion to give you some awesome YouTube channels that I have discovered over reading week. Didn't know if any of you needed a nice distraction from thinking about all this stuff, but I sure do! Thought I'd spread these around:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Vsauce - love this guy, super interesting
http://www.youtube.com/user/jacksfilms - hilarious parodies and YGS (your grammar sucks)
http://www.youtube.com/user/BadLipReading - also hilarious, I'm a fan of their Twilight, Hunger Games and NFL videos

:laugh::meanie:🤣

Hey! Does anyone know how the "first and second" interview rounds work for wcvm? Is it two separate chances to be selected for an interview, or are selected students expected to interview twice? I'm hoping the former... two trips to alberta/saskatoon will be expensive if I can manage to get that far 😛

If you're not selected for a 1st round, you can be selected for the 2nd round. Everyone only interviews once. I believe you get the choice of interviewing in your province or Saskatoon if you're 1st round, but you have to interview in your province for 2nd round. Are you an AB resident?

jmf, I need to remember my earphones to watch your videos on my lunch break! I need some comedy relief 🙂

Ok thats great news! I'm an AB resident but I'm doing my undergrad in Newfoundland... plane rides home or to sask can be up to $700 depending how soon in advance I'm allowed to book them... The second round interviews are right through my convocation, which my parents have already booked flights over here to come :scared:. I'd still way rather face that mess than not interview though haha...

Sure did! First time applicant to both. Have no idea what i'm in for haha. My animal experience is limited compared to most of the people who post on here, but my grades are pretty good so I'm hoping I have a shot 😀

You've applied before right? Interviews scary?

Good deal! Yes, I applied last year as well. UCVM's interview was the scariest thing I've ever had to go through in my life. No exaggeration there. I swear I aged 10 years that day. But just prepare and practice as much as you can and try and keep calm. 🙂 WCVM was a lot less stressful, but I had a very similar interview at Kansas State so I had some experience beforehand.

I've talked to a couple of my friends that made it into UCVM after a few tries and they both said they had personal stuff going on at that time and just didn't care. Both got accepted, so acting cool is the key apparently.

I've heard that some of people prefer the MMI because it goes by really quick 😛 I'm not sure if that will be me though. Yes ok, lets all just try to be less invested in it... speaking to the sample who has sought out this forum... eep we're an anxious bunch

I view it as tearing off the band-aid versus trying to slowly peel it back.

Do you have a preference if you get in to both?

I'd be in huge conflict if I get into both... They both seem like really good schools, I hear at wcvm you get more flexibility in your options courses, which would be nice. But at the same time Calgary is home, you know? What about you? Any preference?

I would be too. I would love to stay in Calgary and UCVM's clinical skills building is so beautiful 😍. That being said, I think WCVM is an excellent school and I would prefer to track in my last few years instead of following the rural mixed route that UCVM seems to push so heavily.

I would consider myself incredibly fortunate with either school. I did meet someone that won't be applying until next year, but had said that they would absolutely only apply to UCVM and that WCVM's program isn't as good. 😕 Their loss. 🙄

Haha that sounds foolish! You graduate with the same degree, why not keep your options open?? Oh well, one less person applying is better odds for us for sure 😛

Ok, I was just looking back at my emails (because I can't stop creeping on vet school stuff at the moment 😉) and if we're following the same timeline from last year, UCVM peeps should get an invite on Tues. March 5th. I'm thinking this is the day since they require a reply by the Friday (which was the case last year). 12 more days! Let the obsessing begin!

The frequency with which I visit this website is slowly increasing haha. Next thing I know, it'll be 20 times a day again! I applied to UCVM this year too & it kills that nothing is online! It's weird how they could be sending interview invites out in less than two weeks, yet they haven't sent that email confirming they received your application.

first thing: I love the big bang theory so that post escalla cracked me up. Second thing: WCVM doesnt hear until after UCVM correct? I could only apply to WCVM so hearing you Alberta folks is making me anxious already!! It seems like time is going faster then last year !

👍 Gotta love Sheldon!

Yes, we won't hear from WCVM until mid-late March. So no worries quite yet. But the waiting is bad enough either way. :scared:

I just checked the WCVM site today. First round interviews aren't until APRIL?! Seriously?! I mean, it will be nice to not have to sweat it out for 2.5 months, picking apart every tiny thing you said... but wow. So much for bumping up the timeline. 😱

Isn't that how it always is? Last year, I had my first round interview on April 17.

Has anyone heard an approximate of what the WCVM interview grade for Alberta is this year? I'm sitting at an 81% (calculated using best FT year as 1/3) and I'm kind of panicking... I know I might be just barely sitting on the fence for an interview. Has anyone heard or can say from recent experience, etc?
Thanks!

Maybe I'm confusing it with the prior year. But I'm pretty sure last year my interview was in March. There is a 2-3 week range though, so maybe I just had a really early one? Regardless, it's inconvenient to not find out until June. You'd think they would realize that by now!

I don't think that information is available? I could be wrong, but you'll probably just have to wait and see. Last year might not even be a good way to gauge things because there are a whole pile more applicants this time around. In addition to the applicant pool changing every year.

They have accepted people in the high 70s range, so I don't think 81 is a problem. However it's more complicated than simply looking at your cumulative GPA. I believe they look at your best year and last 30 credits. Prerequisites probably as well.

thenuttyclub is right with the applicant pool changing each year. You just never know what the competition is.

Sometimes you get a choice for second round as well, but depends on where you fall in their calling list. If all the interview spots are taken at S'toon then you're only offered one in your province.

So all of my friends that I went to school with are going to visit another friend that is doing a work exchange in New Zealand on a farm. The trip is supposed to be May 14-29 and I wanted to book my flights with cancellation insurance and then cancel if my interview ends up conflicting with that. Turns out you can't do that and the insurance only covers if it's an unforeseen event. It was going to be a crazy awesome trip with 4 really good friends. I'm so bummed......

Please WCVM, I need that 1st round interview in April!!!! :xf: :xf: :xf:

Ceratosaurus I feel your pain, I'm sitting at around 80% (with best year) as well and am applying from BC, I'm only second year in a biology degree so if I don't get an interview it's not the end of the world, but I'm still stressing out about it!! I think I check the WCVM website everyday :|

Either way, it's two weeks later than last year for first round interviews...what takes so long?! That's 5 months from the application deadline of December 1st. Do you guys think this means that instead of finding out the first week of June that the acceptances will be pushed back too?....I HOPE NOT, the wait is long enough..:scared:

Maybe they pushed things back because there's a lot more people applying? They can't delay acceptances too much though since they need to keep pace with UCVM. Thankfully.

From my understanding, they moved the date for application deadline because there were a lot of last minute questions about the application that couldn't be answered because no one was in the office over Christmas break. That gives anyone with questions a chance to have them answered before the deadline. I know I was always one of those last minute applicants! Not one with lots of questions, but I could see it being stressful if Jan 1st there was no one around to answer.

Acceptances were given out to WCVM applicants prior to UCVM - at least for AB residents. It's a competitive thing I believe between the two colleges.

to clarify how this works, its 2/3 total GPA (in %) and 1/3 your BEST year's gpa
prereqs aren't counted any heavier than other courses but are just pooled in with your total gpa 🙂 a check it off that it has been completed
Hope that helps!

The Dean had previously told me that for B.C residents, you now need an 81-83% (with about 89%? best year? ) in order to be considered for the first round of interviews. :scared:
