WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if there's a max number of times you can apply to WCVM? I know some schools have restrictions... just curious!

I don't believe so. They will still take your money 😉

I applied 7 times

I know what won't get you one 😉

Below a 3.3 is unlikely

Probably above a 3.6 would be my guess

I could probably ask the BC kids that got in

I read that as "I know you won't get one 🙂" and was very sad.

Not sure if it's changed since, but when I applied and re-took a course they weighted the initial mark and the second mark equally.

Pretty sure that's what they told me. And with regards to AHT/RVT courses, generally they do not consider vocational type programs towards your pre-reqs or your average or allow you to skip any courses as a result of them (probably because there is loads of other stuff they need to teach you and can't assume you know it.) What they use in the calculation is overall GPA, and best full year, and pre-requisites. They'll apparently do all sorts of gymnastics mathematically if you're close to an interview to get you over that hump and into the candidate pool. Best of luck! :luck:

Oops! Sorry!

I know from the experience of several years with no interviews... Wishing I knew then what I know now! oh well!

Just out of curiosity, how many interviews did you end up having (if you want to share that?) Also just wondering about your class in general... are there many people who have applied just one or two times?

3 with WCVM, 1 with UCVM

And yes, a few people in the class got in on their first try - so we're well spread as far as age/experience goes.

Hey guys, I need some advice/ your thoughts. I'm taking a full courseload, 5 courses this semester. I'm not doing so well in one of my classes.(I'm doing OK in the other classes so far...) Actually, I've never done so badly in a class in my entire life. I've gotten below-average marks before, but never anything this terrible 🙁 I feel like a complete failure.... Could one class ruin my chances? That's all I keep thinking about. I can't sleep or eat or anything and have this perpetual headachey feeling and can't concentrate on anything. Have any of you had experiences like this? I've been feeling like this for about a week and cannot get this bad grade out of my head! Sorry I just felt like I needed to get it off my chest 🙁 All I can think of is how this class will drop my GPA, eliminating any chance of me getting in this year. I've never felt this stressed out in my life before :'( To put it in perspective, I'm looking at a C+ in this class, and I only have A- GPA. I spent much time calculating out every scenario of my final grades in all my classes, and no matter how I spin it, I end up dropping. How do I stop being so obsessive?

RELAX! DEEP BREATH :scared:. (Ok... I know it's easier said than done.) One class is NOT going to ruin your chances, even if it's a pre-req. Honest. Not every class I took in my degree worked out how I them wanted to. I know it's stressful, but there are a lot of things they consider in your application aside from a single time where you had a bad grade. If you can swing an interview, even if you're the last person on the interview list it's possible to get in the class. Those are words straight from the Dean's mouth. Don't stress yourself out over one grade. My degree is in chemistry and even some of those classes I wasn't satisfied with my grade, so don't sweat it. You're not alone.

Thanks for the reassurance guys! I'm feeling a little better... But I still can't help but think that I have no more hope. This term is just so stressful that it's getting to me.

You can do this! Enjoy a glass of wine while you study 😉

AGREED! I've definitely had a few semesters that I'm surprised didn't drive me to tear my hair out. Take it one step at a time. It's almost done! 🙂

Why oh why is it so hard for me to calm down?? I'm just a really anxious person in general so... Yeah but I talked with my professor. That was a new experience for me - never ever have I had to go beg in desperation for help from a prof. But he was really understanding and willing to guide me along for the last bit of the course. I should have done this much sooner. hopefully I come out wit a semi-decent grade.

It's good to ask for help! And a great quality to have as a new vet, which you will get there!

hi . I need 6 credits of Math and 6 credits of English . What is the best way to get them ? Can I do it via distant education program ?
And age issue also , I might be over 30 by the time I get in WCVM ... is it worrying ?

Are you a veterinarian already? From the Ukraine? Is it not possible to challenge the NAVLE in that case?

I don't know much about distance Ed courses. I would just make sure they transfer to the courses you need as pre-reqs. I had to retake an English because I did it at a college and UCVM didn't accept it as a transfer.

As for age, I wouldn't worry about it. Over 30 you will be out numbered, but you won't be the only one.

I think it can be a bit more tedious depending on circumstances. I work with several veterinarians who got their degree in other countries. One went through the WCVM here, although many years ago, and 2 others wrote the exams.
A doctor from Colombia had a lot of hoops to jump through. He had had English proficiency tests, and I think about 2 other exams before the NAVLE, plus a large practical portion. In all, I think it was a 2 or 3 year process for him. I'm not sure about the other doctor, she was from Austria and had done this many years ago as well. But it definitely doesn't hurt to look into alternatives. The doctor who went through the WCVM doesn't regret it, and she had 2 young children at the time. The doctors who wrote the exams didn't either. It just depends what you're comfortable with. :luck: Good luck.

Thank for the answers in the both threads . Yes I am . Yes I am from Ukraine . NAVLE seems a bit tricky for me ( but might try it if WCVM won't work out ) .
About transfers I have asked Heather about that and she told me I will need 6 credits of Math and 6 credits of English . But I dont want to be stucked at the college for another 2 years for only Math and English . I want to save some time .
As a single person for me would be easier do restudying . It will also refresh my knowledge of veterinary at modern facilities . And student's years are the best years .
BTW do you have any ideas how many applicants were from Manitoba ? This is where I reside .
Thanks again for Your time Leila .

Well, if it takes 2-3 years just to study up, what's the extra year, when you get to study for the NAVLE with a bunch of classmates! Makes things way easier when you have that support...

This little article says the exact numbers accepted in this year.

http://words.usask.ca/wcvm/2012/10/students-excel-at-wcvm-awards-night/

One was a deferral. I think MB usually brings in 15, but I think if there are identical applicants (as far as their fun formulas calculate) they accept the people on the cusp. So this year BC and MB got one extra, and Yukon got two.

I meant Total Applicants because on website outdated information for 2010 - 50 applicants . And you are right about quota for MB on typical years, it is 15 .

Could you shed light on ?

At U of S ? How long did it take ? coz ill need 6 cred of E and 6 cred of M
Thank you for you time .

You could probably do all those credits in a single term at any university. Like for Math, you could probably do calculus I and a stats class? And there's a whole variety of English classes you could take at once, like poetry, fiction, prose, etc. etc.

Ahhh... Sorry about that. I don't know how many applied from MB. It is fairly consistent I believe. There might be someone on here if you search around the past application cycle who would have received that number.

And no, I did my English at UofC and not by correspondence. So it took a semester to do 3 credits

I think it's fairly close to what Saskatchewan has... I was told the ratio is roughly 3:1 applicants to seats for SK/MB, and more like 6:1 for BC/AB. I know that's rough numbering, but it gives a general idea at least.

Yay, that sounds about right.

U of Guelph
Prerequisite Courses
Biological Sciences - 1.0 credits (with recommended emphasis on animal biology)
Cell Biology - 0.5 credits
Genetics - 0.5 credits
Biochemistry - 0.5 credits
Statistics - 0.5 credits (requires a Calculus prerequisite to take the Statistics course)
Humanities/Social Sciences - 1.0 credits (In selecting these courses from among those acceptable, the prospective veterinary student should consider topics such as ethics, logic, critical thinking, determinants of human behaviour and human social interaction.)
How their credits different from ours ? How many academic hours each credit consist of ?

You may want to check with someone who's applied to Guelph, but to me that translates to:

1.0 = full year = 6.0 credits in the west
0.5 = one semester = 3.0 cr

You may have to move to Ont, if you wish to be considered for that school, but if you write the MCAT, you may be able to apply to one of the international student seats - but don't quote me on that.

Soooo, everybody working hard on their applications? Definitely was planning on having it submitted early this year. So much for that. 🙄

I think we need an increased word limit on all of the statements. It's so hard to cram it all in there!

Ugh, yeah. It's tough to fit it all in, but I wrote mine really early after having an epiphany one night in the middle of a shower. I've had the chance to go back and tweak/edit for about a month and a bit, which helped me. I'm just making sure there's nothing left to add before I send it off, hopefully tonight.
Good luck to us this year guys! I always dread March to June... but maybe not this year! :xf:

March cannot come soon enough. It is annoying that it takes so long to hear back! I sent in my application last night...It says that it has been received but not processed. I dont remember it taking long to process them last year???

For all those curious, this is what happens when you miss the deadline...........

I created a second account early on as my original email was going to be disabled. So I figured I'd try to log-in to the previous to see what happened. Which was an incredibly bad idea as now this message will haunt my sleep despite having submitted my application....:scared:

Now we just have to forget about things for a few months! Except UCVM apps, I suppose.

When I saw your message my heart stopped a little for you...then I read what you wrote haha.
For those who have gotten an interview in past years... when abouts did you hear about it? When does UCVM hear?

UCVM hears about two weeks prior to the interview date (second last saturday in march approximately) and WCVM has two rounds -- mid-late april and early may. I think you hear a few weeks ahead or so. Can't remember my exact dates from last year.

edit: It's a pretty scary message! I wouldn't want anyone to have to face that for real!

For SK... I heard about my interview in early March. Interview was March 20. The second round is late May. Can't remember when I heard about my June interview (it was several times ago) but generally if you hit first round you'll know by mid-march. 🙂

Does anybody know how heavy the competition is for the Education Equity seats?? Just curious!

Last cycle, I heard from WCVM about an interview offer around March 26 and interviewed April 17. A couple of people I know who got second round interviews I remember them interviewing around the last week in May. So definitely a long waiting process..

If you have good grades, you'll be in the first round of interviews. If you're in school during January, often they will wait until those grades come in before they make their decisions on the second round, and may email for you to respond with unofficial grades whenever they get posted.

What constitutes "good grades"? I remembered seeing in the brochure the average acceptance grades are between 78%-86%. I'm a little nervous because my school seems to be unusual in regards to marking scheme, where 80% is an "A", so I have a 3.9 GPA but only an 83% average... I also attended another school for half my degree (u of calgary) that needed 90% to get an A and still had mostly a's haha so I feel like my new school choice may have been a bad idea:scared:

Don't stress. They convert everything... I worked with a vet who had the same thing; she was at U of C but then transferred to Saskatoon. She thought she was screwed when they told her her average in the interview but she ended up getting in. You may not be able to convert it... I'm not sure what calculation they use. You can probably ask Heather on this one. She's good at providing information, especially with respect to grades/planning.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... if you get an interview, it is possible even if you're in the dead last position to make it into the class. You just have to nail the interview. Don't sweat the small things. You'll just have to wait for your offer like the rest of us 🙂

👍

Don't freak yourself out. There's nothing that can be done at this point regardless. You'll probably surprise yourself. 🙂

Bored at work and figured I'd post that I really appreciate WCVM saving old transcripts rather than having me pay to send the same ones to them again! 😍 With the exception of requesting one additional to show I have a degree. But with the other two being re-used, I am very happy!

UCVM should consider this. Every little bit of money saved counts! 😀

At my school, every prof converts the grades differently. In one class, an A+ could be 95-100, and in another class, and A+ could be 90-100. So I have no idea what my GPA would be in percentage, or how WCVM would even calculate that. There is a 'recommended' grading scheme for the entire university, but profs rarely go by that. My school also seems to be notorious for "scaling" which I don't think is true at all! Maybe in some of my first and second year classes, but none of my upper division classes have been scaled.

Can I just vent and say how annoying it is to have people in my group of friends think I'm doing the same thing as a girl we went to high school with. She just got accepted into the vet tech program and I am getting comments like "Isn't that what you're trying to get into?" "What's the difference between vet school and vet tech school if they're both two year programs?"

UGH!!

Agreed. All of it. 😉

Anyone else caught wishing we had the application timeline of the states? Must be so nice to know your future more than 2 months before you're supposed to be fulfilling it... 😛

I know, so frustrating!!! Anyone know why they do it like this? I don't understand why they don't start the process earlier.

I can only think of one... For those taking classes in the Jan-Apr semester... Especially if they include pre-reqs.
