Western/Comp class of 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys! did anyone else get their roomate info and tuition info in the mail also? it seems like tuition went up a bunch for next year. what is the tuition this year?

i still haven't gotten my financial aid stuff yet, though....

I still haven't recieved anything....no roomate stuff(which I no longer need.....THANK GOD!) and no financial aid info...I called them and it's supposed to be coming in the mail....We'll see....I'll let you know when.
I know a bunch of other people got their financial aid stuff....not I McFly....not I!

Hey guys,
I got a couple pieces of mail recently. Last week I received this package from student affairs including the roommate info (probably sent earlier to summer program students?) and this summer newsletter for Western U. students. I think a day or two I received the letter regarding the tuition for this upcoming year. I looked in the student catalog for 2000-2001 and it seems like the tuition there is ~$26k.. not including the $1250 tech fee, $450 curriculum fee, $175 mandatory student health fee, and $40 student body fee. That being said, it sounds like they tried to combine certain fees into our tuition this year to make everything simplier.. so maybe it adds up so the tuition increased perhaps a thousand at the most? (could we attribute this to rising costs/inflation/etc.?) That's my take on it.

Anyone know when we will get info on whatever health plan the school has for its students? I only have major health coverage.. but nothing with benefits or discounts for visits. Time to get my teeth cleaned, my eyes checked, my head examined.. 😱

I seems as though many of you are excited about starting WesternU/COMP in August. I enjoy reading about your enthusiasm. I can especially appreciate the overzealous behavior towards purchasing a new laptop (which you will find only useful for reading e-mail, surfing the net between classes and downloading an occasional powerpoint lecture). As I sit here, enjoying a beer and feeling rather proud of myself for having finished my first year of medical school, it brings me great joy to know that I will be present to watch your current level of excitement change to dread and dispair around the first week of September. I will surely enjoy it.

Seizure,
Just wanted to say, ...."Thank you for that BREATH of fresh air"..I found it not only enlightening and inspiring, but utterly motivational!
I too am enjoying a beer...after a full week's work.....Cheers!

Till we meet in L.A.

Seizure, so how much did u really use your laptop, during your first year... for a few classes or many???
thanks
faiz

There's a lot of truth to what Seizure says..... your joy will probably turn to misery sometime during your 1st semester. I don't know if I'll find the same satisfaction in seeing the 1st years go through that. But just remember, everyone goes through that..... it's the rite of passage of the first year.

In regards to the computers, you really end up needing them for the prof's powerpoint lectures, email, and blackboard. It's a work in progress, but hopefully it will be more streamlined for your class. There's still a whole mess of when we're supposed to turn them in, our leasing agreement, etc. At our rate... we probably won't have a set policy until school starts.

-Eric, "new" MSII
COMP

Congrats to those folks who made it to MSII! I can definitely understand how you would feel going through the first year of med school and grinning with some anticipation thinking about how the incoming class will change our tune once classes really start. Hey, I expect that to happen.. but I guess being positive about this is better than going into med school being negative as heck, right? Now THAT would make life difficult I bet. 🙂

Anyway, what are you new second years planning to do during the summer.. spend more time on SDN? 😀

melancholy,
Yes..... being positive is very important. Make sure you always stay that way.... don't like the negative people get on you. As for myself this summer, yeah I'll spend more time on this thing. Also, I'm going to work, shadow docs, be part of a softball league, and try to make it to Hawaii before school starts.

-Eric

misery shmisery. bring it on.
😎

I was just kidding about enjoying watching the new students suffer. I think that most new students anticipate the degree of difficulty, however it is something that must be experienced to be truly appreciated. In regards to the computer issue, I actually used my computer everyday to study notes (powerpoint) and to summarize note packets for a study aid. I also used it for entertainment purposes during lectures that involved the professor essentially reading from the note packets. I also know students that rarely used their computers. It really depends on how you best learn the material. Most of the professors used the technology, however some professors like Kiick and Leo use the old overhead projector. In your future careers, it will be very advantageous to become comfortable using computer technology. Buying or leasing a computer is a wise investment in your education. I was going to return my leased computer and spend $3000 on a nice Dell or Sony, but I changed my mind and I will stay with the lease because I did not really have a problem with the IBM's. It seems that most people are trading in the computers and buying a brand new one with all of the bells and wistles.Use your best judgement! Enjoy the summer.

Just got the tuition bill...with the "new" increase...Anyone heard about this SAPP program yet?
Just wondering....I've heard nothing!!!

I'm still torn between "Do it" and "Don't do it" about the SAPP.

I haven't even applied for the program.

Keep me updated with the SAPP, John. Thanks. 🙂

I will certainly keep you all posted about the SAPP program...and I ask the same of you all out there.....

We need to start e-mailing and making real plans about this 1st week of June thing...Let's get this rolling...I hear Californians are NOTORIOUSLY slow to begin with....so...let's get a crackn'

Your New Yorker friend....

Okay John,

HOLY MOLY! I have finally got my password. I have been reading and waiting, reading and waiting and now I can finnaly interact with you guys. My name is Tighe
(pronounced Ty) and I am the ex fence-riding
Oregonian who is going to be rooming with
John (Yosh) this fall at COMP.
Just wanted to Say Howdy to everyone and let you know that I am really looking forward to
meeting you all in Pomona during the first week in June.
By the way are there any other HPSP students out there. I am in AirForce HPSP program.
Well take care everyone... live it up....
Its coming soon... 😉

Geez, I'm gone for a week and look what happens.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who is still waiting on info. It must not be the mail this time. Interesting.

I am also still in the application process for the Navy HPSP. I am hoping it works out, cause I have this window of time this summer that would allow me to do my OIS. But who knows, how often really is a perfect window of time that perfect? 😉

On a not exactly related note, in my efforts to get to know my future classmates, what's everyone's beverage of choice or choices? I am a big fan of beverage diversity myself and find it wrong to discriminate.

Coke, sprite, (beer), ice tea, juice, milk, (jin and tonic), water, (wine), Gatorade, (a shot of rum every now and again). I NEVER discriminate...
😀

😛 hmmmm beverages of choice.... I would have to say there is nothing better than an Ice Cold beer on a hot day. Other than that I am kind of partial to Ice Water. (though gin and tonics are pretty good myself - tastes like pinsol sometimes though)

Tang n'Tonics's are always DYNOMITE!

SoCo and Lime anyone? Blackhaus?

Tighe...I got your message...I was on the subway in the city... buzzed ya back..left a message with your dad(I believe)

Hey folks,
Well, I am currently back home in Houston for a whole 2.5 days visiting family and taking a break from being a faux-Californian (I got my plane tickets last minute through priceline.com.. cheap prices, but I was stuck with only being home for 2-3 days).

SammyK- What's it like to be in Minnesota anyway? Did you go to school there? I've only been there once.. had to stop over one night due to Northwest Airlines screw-up. All I remember is it was damn cold standing in the hotel shuttle pickup stop... heh.

As for favorite drinks, wow.. I've progressed through so many.. from Coke to Pepsi to Mr. Pibb to Dr. Pepper.. then back to Coke and back to Dr. Pepper again. I don't mind a beer once in awhile, but I usually stick to ciders or mixed drinks.. no wine coolers since I'm not fond of the carbonation in those things. Long Island Iced Teas.. yum! (Note: Since college, drinking has gone to almost absolute zero... I guess I will be killing a few more brain cells in med school, huh?)

Tigg- Ahh.. nice to finally meet you. Guess I will have to erase my post in the pre-DO section asking you to introduce yourself in the thread.. heh.

Yosh- hey.. I'm slow because I've always been like this.. Cali has nothing to do with it! Anyway, you have more details for me? Just PM or email ([email protected]) whenever you find out.. no hurries. We'll all be in Cali soon enough...

anyone else fill out that roommate search form thing?

i have some entertaining stories that involve LI Iced Teas! and who said nothing good came out of Long Island... 😛

~j

As far as drinks go, I'm a beer kinda guy (all beers, I too don't discriminate).

Cheers!

Y'know, I've heard passing references to chris, but don't even know what kind of drink it is...what is it?

June 1st "Informal Get-together"

Hey...what's going on out there? I was e-mailing back and forth with Rob about this long awaited June 1st rendez-vous(Sorry about the spelling...never did get around to taking those French classes...)

The current suggestion is Dave and Busters in Orange. I know of the D&B thing from Ft. Lauderdale...but I have never been.

What do you guys think?

I just want to get a bunch of us together....and have a good time(Californians and Non-Californians alike)

Let's get a response list going and plan this out..

Suggestions for other places are fine too...like I said, as far as places in Cali..I have NO CLUE...

Wanna talk Manhattan??..We're in business...

Let's hear what ya think....

i'm down to go so far if everything is cheeky, there is a D and B in Garden grove and one in irvine. i ve never been there but they seem to be popular
peace

we can watch the laker trounce whoever if there is a game

OK, heres a question for everyone. Just curious, What race is everyone??

I am mostly Jewish (with a hint of German). I know, odd mix.

Hey guys and gals,
The Dave & Busters you're referring to must be the one at "The Block".. which is this huge outdoor mall area with big AMC movie theatre (cheap tickets!), skateboard park, shops, restaurants, a Krispy Kreme, and D&B! That's actually not a bad idea although the crowd at The Block can seem a bit young at times. I'm up for it since there is plenty to do there in general. D&B, for those of you who've never been there, is sort of an entertainment place with a restaurant of American-fare food, arcade games, prizes, mystery shows, casino area, billiards, shuffleboard, virtual reality games, bar, etc.. lots to do there. It's probably 25-30 minutes away from Pomona.. maybe a bit less without traffic. The Block should be better to go during a weekday night if possible.. lots less crowd and wait times.

For those incoming folks who won't have much to do during the first week of June, we could also plan a trip down to southern Orange County for some nice mall shopping, beaches, etc. depending on interest.. maybe a bbq/bonfire? Darn.. now that I think about it, there are more than enough distractions.. including the always popular Las Vegas and the shopping outlets on the way there.

In response to LisaB's post, I'm an American-born Taiwanese.. born in Chicago and raised in Houston, TX.

Yosh- Have you ever passed by a place in Manhattan called BarCode? Thought it looked cool.. like a club/arcade/bar with bouncers outside.. but it was a big disappointment. Next time I'm in NYC, I will just spend all my time in Flushing at the Korean BBQs for the lunch specials... or in this little restaurant I found called "Curry in a Hurry". 🙂

Lanny (currently in Houston)

Lanny,

You hit it on the ball. Yes, the D&B Yosh and I are talking about is the one at the Block. June 1st, on a Friday night? It's do-able, and I'm up to it. The crowd at that day at the Block will be pretty young on a Friday night. We can choose to hang out there the whole time (eat, drink, chat, play games). A good place for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. As for my response to LisaB's question: a USA-born Filipino living in one of the most diverse cities of the nation...as stated by the front page of the Los Angeles Times.

Half Armenian, half English

LisaB's ?: i'm persian, but born in germany and raised here in california(orange county and san diego)...
as for d&b's: i've been to the one at irvine spectrum and the new one in san diego. it's a lot of fun, and a lot of good food and drinks! but where exactly is the block?

Hey everyone.... man the d&b sounds absolutely awesome. Anyhooo
I am 1/4 Danish, 1/4 German, 1/16 Cherokee,
1/8 Welsh, and 1/16 Enlish.

Translation.... So pale all I do is burn and you can almost see me in the dark. Hopefully California will do wonders for my lack of tan.... 🙄

Take Care

Nationality.....

1/2 Sicilian(1st generation off da boat)
1/4 Irish
1/4 German

What does that make me?

Hmm....a raging alcoholic with one hell of a bad temeper!!!

Just Kidding.... 😛 😡 😛

My boyfriend and I are down to meet with everyone on June first! We'll be flying into Ontario from the SF bay area.

As for nationalities, my boyfriend is 100% Native American and I am an American born Filipina. Hey RobbC, did you see the movie, The Debut?

Hey folks,
Nice to see a little diversity in our class already. (although this is just the SDN sampling.. heh).

Smiles- The Block is located in the city of Orange near the UCI Medical Center and CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County). From SD, just take I-5 North allllll the way until you hit 22 (Garden Grove freeway).. The Block is close to there. That intersection of the 5, 22, and 57 freeways is called the "Orange Crush".. a little trivia fact for those who will get to know OC in the future. If you take 57 north from that point, you will hit Pomona in about 20-30 minutes. I haven't been to the D&B at the Spectrum, but I guess they are pretty much the same. D&B usually has this horse-riding arcade game that has always been entertaining to watch..

Hey Tigg- don't worry.. you'll get as much sun as you want.. most likely more than you need the next couple of years. It's going to be hot even while taking a lunch break in that little park on the campus of Western!

Lemon- Sounds good.. how come you haven't gotten your boyfriend onto SDN yet? (hint, hint) At any rate, looks like we'll have a nice little group of people flying in.. then we can drag some locals out as well if they're not working/busy. I might be making a trip to Ontario Airport on June 1st to pick up John (Yosh aka Raging alcoholic 😡 😀) just to let ya know..

Lanny (last night in Houston.. back to Cali tomorrow!)

Hey Lanny,

I hope you are picking me up tooo 😀

As for nationality:

2/2 Korean 😀

Born in South Korea, but raised in sunny S. Cal. 😎

I would love to join all you guys down at D&B. I only been to one in Irvine a couple years back.

Even though I don't drink at all, I promise I won't stop you guys from getting drunk and vomit through your noses. 😀 😀

you guys got yourself an east coast korean coming to town. watch out! 😱

wish i could engage in some consumption of tastey beverages with you all on the 1st...but i'll be there in spirit.

~j

I'll meet up with ya this weekend...one of my college roomates is also coming down so we can all go out.

Give me a buzz and we'll plan this out.

For all you others...NEXT FRIDAY!!!!!

Hey Innerpower- Since you don't live TOO far away from me.. know any good places in OC for Korean food or bbq? I used to eat Korean food all the time back on the east coast because the restaurants in Baltimore were usually open late (like 3 am). Lots of good hot pot dishes when it gets cold..

**Did you SAPP folks get your paperwork finally? I got a SAPP accept/decline letter in the mail within the past few days.. just letting you know. Funny.. they have no clue that I had already accepted to ISAC... so much for coordination between the two programs. 😛

Vdubpower- If the Lakers game is Friday maybe we could go to D&B and watch it there too? Ahhhh.. 😉

hey all...i'm in shimla (in the himalayan mountain range). its wonderful here. pure nature. anyways i'm 100% punjabi sikh for those that are wondering. umm gotta run now...too much to see 😀

vdub signing out from london

Getting ready fo the big week coming up. I got my SAPP acceptance letter yesturday..along with the "assignment" for the first day of class.
This is suddenly seeming all very real....

Here we go....

melancholy

I hear you man! Those hot and spicy soups go a long way on cold, freezing days.

I know a few places in OC, but I'm more familiar with the LA area. There are bunches of great restaurants in K town. We should all go check 'em out before we start school.

What are everyone's opinions about palmpilots out there? Is it a good idea to get one or to wait till 3rd/4th year before getting one. Also, what are the best ones out there at a reasonable price?

I was wondering about the same thing. I am assuming that we wouldn't need them before 3rd and 4th year...but what purpose would they serve?
I don't know much about them, and have never used one...so I am in the dark about this Palm Pilot issue....

hey everyone...

about the palms...i was looking at the palm vx and the compaq ipaq color. after doing some research i believe that it would be more of a novelty to have one during the first 2 years. but definitely a necessity during the last two. but if i had to choose, it would either be the vx or the ipaq. the vx is about 350 and the ipaq is 500. the ipaq is color and has better upgrade options...
