WESTERN/COMP Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

You know there is an official class thread down in the DO Student forum? Technically, once you're accepted, you're no longer "pre-med" right?

There's also a facebook group for any of you who might be interested.

the letter didnt come in today! Ugh can I call admissions and see if they can tell me over the phone?

Can someone please post COMP's match list from the past two years? I can't find them on Western's website anywhere. I realize that the 2007 match list is incomplete from reading this thread. What about 2006? Thanks!

hopefully in the next couple of hours ill find out if i got in or waitlisted at Western. I am freaking out a bit.😱

alternate list. 🙁

Dude I was checking out your mdapplicants and it looks like you haven't gotten much love. Is your accent really heavy or something? Looks like you have at least one acceptance though. That is all it takes.

im waitlisted at 4 schools, 1 acceptance, and 1 interview pending (2 interviews i rejected). I guess it may be my greek accent, or my low verbal lol 😉.

I'll be leaving tomorrow for my interview on the 14th. I look forward to seeing everyone and the campus as well.

i havent seen my alternate letter yet, but i was wondering, does it state if you are high, middle, or low on it???? i have seen from the previous year that a lot of the students in the high alternate list got an acceptance eventually.

thanks
peter

Man Pete if you got waitlisted i'm probably in trouble... As far as the alternate list I remember them saying that there is only a high or low list and people aren't ranked beyond that.

I don't know what your stats are, but you do have a few advantages over me. First, you live real close to Pomona (chino hills right?), Second they seem to have more in state than out of state, and third, u probably did not receive a 6 in verbal like me. 🙂 I speak four languages, read and write in about 10 different scripts including Arabic, Assyrian & Aramaic, Hebrew, Russian (slavic), Greek, etc., but for some reason I can't master English. lol.

I gotta start writing LOI to Western, as much as I love TouroCOM, i would rather be in SoCal especially now that I know/met some of my relatives that I didnt even knew existed till two weeks ago.

Maybe they didn't like the idea that I own my own cafe? Maybe i should have focused more on scholastics rather than making money to pay off medical school.

Why are you wasting time with medical school? You could join the CIA or the NSA and be badass.

Yeah I second this motion. 👍 You get a lot more women as a secret agent. Cafe owner by day, defender of the Free world by night. Good Luck anyways Pete.

Got a voice message a few hours ago from Dr. Adams letting me know I was accepted!!!!! Now to fork over another $1K.

Congrats! So are you between KCUMB and Western now? I am curious on why did you decide to put depasits at both schools? (It is non-refundable at Western)

Yeah, I just heard back today! I will be attending this Fall! I'm gonna look for the facebook group when i get my email. Good Luck to everyone else

I put down a deposit for KCUMB back in December and I have not put one down at Western yet since I just interviewed there last week. All my interviews except Western were back in Sept./Oct. so I had to put a deposit down before Dec. 15th (between NOVA, AZCOM & KCUMB) to hold my spot at one.

So yea, I guess I am ultimatly deciding between KCUMB & Western but right now Western is looking like my choice. So I guess I say bye bye to my $1K at KCUMB. I'm sure they will find something useful to do with it. Maybe if I beg them they will give it back?

yo Enginerd you interviewed on the 7th? Did I meet you? My name is Eric

Anyone interviewing on Tuesday, February 26th?

interviewed here yesterday. was probably the most professional school I have interviewed at and ****ing loved it. am crossing my fingers for wednesday

Hey everybody,
I just got my Accept-letter from Western!!!🙂 Yey!!!

Now I'm kinda' torn between KCUMB vs. Western -- those are my top choices. And I have an interview at AZCOM later in the month -- I don't even know if I should go... Did anyone else have to chose between these two? What were your criteria for chosing? My main criteria are the rotations -- if I go to Western I can do BOTH core & elective rotations at local hospitals and up my chances of getting residency here; vs. if I go to KCUMB, the cores are done in the Kansas area, leaving only 4th yr electives in CA (hopefully). On the other hand I hear KCUMB has a great Residency-match profile for competitive specialties... so I'm really torn🙄!! Can anyone offer any advise???
Thank you🙂

The doc who wrote my DO letter is an ER doc, Western COMP grad, and he does great.

There is no guarantee that you will want to do your rotations in California, or anywhere else. You won't have time to go to the ****ing beach, so don't even head down that extremely stupid line of thinking.

It's not like we're comparing Stanford to SGU here. Opportunities will probably be similar at both places. Go to the one you like best.

Thanks TexasTriathlete....It's not about the beach, trust me...I just came off a grad-program that was nothin' but med-school classes form two years... I KNOW I won't have time for the beach!!! But I know too that reputation does matter... and THAT was the sourse of my current indecision😉.

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate from interview is for western? I'm VERY concern at this point now since I've been rejected from 2 schools and only 1 alternate-list. I have a 3.5 gpa with a 29 MCAT. I'm not sure if it's my interview, lack of D.O. letter of recommendation, or anything else and I'm absolutely freaking out. This is my last shot, and conveniently my first choice as well, for medical school. I know one of my letters of recommendation is very very bland and was only used because another science teacher who was suppose to write my letter went on sabbatical and didn't write the letter.
I'm very concerned about this because since western sends out their interviews before sometimes secondaries are even collected then that means they may not have even looked at my letters of recommendation.
Do you guys think I should say something about this at my interview?
I have always had COMP as my first choice and I REALLY want to be accepted.

LET THEM KNOW THEY'RE YOUR FIRST CHOICE!!!! I called my assigned administrator-counselor at the school to check on my status, and stressed that W. was my first choice -- I also told them this at the interview; by the way they WILL ask you if you've interviwed at other schools -- say YES, because it will mean you're a desirable candidate: so say "yes, I've had interviews at X and Y, but Western is my first choice because..." -- this will prevent the follow-up question of "were you accepted", so you won't need to wory about that. Your stats look pretty solid -- I don't why you've had disappointments 🙄, but if you have an interview at Western you've got pretty good chances -- FORGET ABOUT YOUR OTHER INTERVIEWS and go in POSITIVE 🙂 -- it WILL help! GOOD LUCK 🙂😉!

It's funny that you say that. They also asked me whether I've been accepted anywhere else, and I listed the schools, but I followed that up with a "but obviously I'm still very interested in Western, otherwise I wouldn't be interviewing here." And I got accepted a week later. So I think it definitely helps for them to know that you are wanted.

For anyone with an upcoming interview: I wouldn't sweat it. My interview was pretty relaxed. Just know "Why Western" and you should be solid, since supposedly something like 90% of those interviewed get accepted (I think this includes waitlist).

yeah, they asked me where else I was interviewed at and why would I choose Western over each school I mentioned.

my interviewer asked me Western vs UCLA and Western vs USC. =T not cool, especially since i hadn't interviewed at those schools..

that would be horrible to ask. In addition, why would anyone choose Western over UCLA or USC anyways.

I would just say I would not know since I did not apply to those schools. In order to really compare, a person have to interview at each school first.

I have my interview coming up on the 21st. I am starting to get a little nervous. Western is by far my #1 choice. I could use some reassurance.

I have a 3.5 GPA, 30 MCAT. I heard the stats about 90% of the interviewers eventually get in. Does this hold true for the ones interviewing this late in the game. I keep reading here in the forum of acceptance after acceptance and I just hope they are saving a spot for me 🙂?

I am going to be the happiest man on earth if I get an acceptance, that is if the stress of not knowing doesnt kill me first.

What is Western's interview format? Group? Faculty and Student? or just Falculty? I have an interview coming up and just wanted to know. Thanks!

What was your science gpa and how about your extra curricular activities? If it makes you feel any better my overall gpa was the same and I had a lower MCAT. Also, your not that late in the game. Interviews go on for another few months. gl

Format can be 1-3 Interviewers and you. The panel can be a student (MS3-MS4 I think), faculty or Doctor. I had two physiology professors and my interview went well. You can prob bet on at least one faculty. gl

i will send my first LOI tomorrow, one of many, till the finally accept me. I will make it evident that I want to go to Western over any other school.

Seems fair to me. I got asked a similar question when I interviewed at Western in 2006. "Would you choose Western over an allopathic school?" Just answer the question honestly. Every osteopathic interviewer knows that they are competing for candidates who'd like to go allopathic. Or wish to stay in SoCal, if that is where they are from.

And if you didn't apply allopathic, you don't have to worry about a question like "Choosing Western over UCLA, USC, or other allopathic school."

That's true. They did ask me if I applied allopathic (and I did), so that is probably why those questions came up. I said UCLA over Western (tuition), but I also said Western over USC ("fit").

👍 It worked out.

I've tried to avoid SDN since I found out about my waitlist, but I'm really curious about how the waitlist works for Western. My letter didn't say anything about a high/low ranking system and that they made it very clear that they can't tell you what your chances are at this point. So if anybody has any extra info/experience with this, please share. In April or May will they be able to give me a better idea what to expect? What are my chances now?

3.2 undergrad GPA/3.1 science GPA/3.4 grad GPA/30 MCAT
plenty of other stuff, good interview, sent them a post-interview letter

By the way, I just started studying for the MCAT for the third time. The first chapter is units and kinematics and I just want to hit myself in the head with this book.

I'm really nervous. My interviewer was really dry and didn't give me anything. I have a 3.7 postbacc(pre-req's), 3.4 science, 3.15 GPA and an 11VR/7PS/10BS MCAT. It's my last interview and my first choice. I really wished I tried to bump the interview date up, I feel like the odds are against me this late in the cycle.

to the above poster, why retake the MCAT? a 30 is great for DO schools
