I'm freaking out! I have a January 1st deadline for submitting the deposit and I thought I could do this by credit card over the phone...they are closed until January 5th.
I'm sending my check in today, but if I send it via fedex nobody is there to sign??? What should I do? would getting the letter post-marked today be enough? I'm kicking myself so hard ....

Admissions just emailed me confirming that it has to be postmarked by Jan. 1. They won't have a chance to open it until Jan. 5 anyway, and there will likely be a pile full of letters...so don't stress and just send it in regular mail or priority mail ($4.80 and takes 2-3 days).

I was on vacation, just picked up my mail, and found my acceptance.....I basically have no time either...what were they thinking with this Jan. 1st deadline?

Definitely open file. I don't remember the extent of the information they had access to, but I had a few questions specific to my activities.

thank you so much AlexiR...I'm so relieved!

You will be interviewed by two professors and the interview is open file. They have both the primary and secondary applications. They asked me specific questions about my classes and things I had commented on in my secondary application essays.
Good luck to you, FiLLIBEANO

hey i know it's still kinda early, but i was wondering if anyone had any good resources as to living situations for western comp. other than craig's list, is there some other resource you might suggest? I'm thinking of living either in montclair or chino hills.. thanks!!!

hey i'd like to know the same. What's the average rent rate these days in the surrounding areas of Pomona? Any past students want to give us some suggestions or info on the best living arrangements?

Many students live in Claremont, Chino Hills, Chino, Montclair, Upland, etc...Alot of them live with 2 or 3 other students/classmates. Rent is about 700/month. I think you can get a 4 bedroom house for around $1800-2200. Claremont and Chino Hills are very popular amongst students here. You can also live in the Helix, it is about 1650 for a 2 bedroom. It is convenient since it is accross the street from school. Everything is covered except electricity. The "high speed" internet they advertise is virtually nonexistent though. As for finding roommates, once you get access to bandweb, you can find other students looking for roommates.

Yes they do.

I got asked ethical questions as well as administration/insurance issue type questions.

hi all, i have my interview scheduled toward the end of this month and i'm super nervous :scared: this is one of my top choices =)

I was hoping anyone can give me an idea how the interview is set up in terms of questions are they specific on files, political/insurance/ethics issues, etc etc. and how long usually after the interview do the results for acceptance/waitlist/reject come out. Thanks all and good luck to everyone else ^^.

The interview feedback section on SDN can give you a pretty good idea of what type of questions they ask during interviews. Here's the link: http://more.studentdoctor.net/schoollist.php?type=1

I believe that students typically are informed of the decision regarding their application roughly 2 weeks after their interview.

Good luck!! :luck:

Hey,
I have a question about the time it takes after the adcom meets. I interviewed 12/16 but because of the holidays, they weren't meeting until today (1/7). How long do you think it will take to hear?

Thanks!

edit: nevermind, I got a call tonight letting me know I was accepted. He said they are calling because they realize it took a lot longer than it normally does. Pretty nice!

i want my phone call!!!
now i am really sad thinking i didnt get in. the phone just rang, and i got all excited, but then my mom said they hung up the phone.

omg i'm so nervous now 🙁

i wonder if the phone call was only if you had a deposit conflict? do they still send letters for everyone else?

I didn't mean to make everyone nervous! He said I would still be getting the acceptance packet in the mail. Maybe its because I live in NY and it will take longer for me to receive mine? I'm not sure...

I'm sure you guys will hear good news soon. I got the call right before 5pm cali time, maybe they will call more people tonight. Good luck guys!🙂

try not to get nervous, guys!!

I got my phone call because I had a deposit conflict, and I was told that I would be receiving an acceptance letter in the mail in the near future. I'm pretty sure that regardless of whether or not you get a call, you will get your decision in the mail.

But even if they were going to call everyone regarding their decisions because we had to wait extra long due to the holidays, would they call only the people who got acceptances? That would kinda suck...

And I don't know if they would make all those calls in one night...😕 Like melv said, they might call more people tonight...

Keep your heads up guys, I'm rooting for you all!!! :luck:

well, lets hope the calls were just for those with conflicts!
oh, that sounds kinda bad, nobody wants conflict, but lets hope the rest of the 12.16 crew hear positive news by mail now!!!!!

Phew, finally!
I got my acceptance letter today! Im keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of the 12.16 crew.

Now, its time to consider lots of stuff..... 😍

roomies anyone? PM me!

I'm kinda new to this forum but I was looking at the COMP website and it says 4 new schools are opening up in the Fall of 2009. The OD, DPM, DMD, and the biomedical sciences program. If you click on the curriculum for each of the schools you'll see a lot of overlap between the dental, podiatry, and DO school curriculums. It says they will be taking Gross Anatomy, Head and Neck, along with pretty much all the systems second year as well. I was wondering if anyone knows if the DO students will be lumped into the same classes as DPM and DMD students. I know the school is working towards "interprofessional development" but some classes could be difficult with the addition of over 100 new students in addition to the 220 DO students in courses like Anatomy where the student:cadaver ratio is pretty important. I tried contacting the people that are in charge of the curriculum and heard nothing thus far. Does anyone know anything about how they will adjust the curriculum to fit the new students from other schools?

I just had my check deposited today after turning it in by hand on December 19th.

I got an interview for march 12. Anyone else have the same?

Hi there,

I don't usually come on this forum all that often anymore, but I stumbled on your question and thought I'd give it a shot.

So yes, Western is in fact opening some new colleges next year. They are in the process of completing a new $100 million (or so) building, where the new schools will be housed, including new lecture halls and such. And yes, Western is trying for a more "integrated" approach. I have heard from professors that anatomy will be a bit different next year. Instead of having just med students in the course, they'll be working with 1 pod and 1 dental student, with the other 2 students being DO's. So, the ratio of 4 people per body per session will still be the same, and there are plans to get more cadavers. Your education will not suffer, don't worry. 🙂

Really, though, it won't be too much of an issue for med students, since the initial programs will be quite small, or so I've heard. I know nothing about whether or not they'll be taking the systems 2nd year, so I can't help you out with that.

I hope that helps you out a bit! And if you're wondering, so far I'm enjoying med school at Western A LOT and I do not regret coming here in the least. Good luck with the application process!

Looks like I'll be attending Western 🙂

I called admissions today and they said a decision was made before the break but just mailed yesterday. They refused to say what the decision was on the phone despite the fact that they sent the letter to an address where I no longer live. Apparently I have to call back in a few days for them to re-send the letter when I don't get it (which I clearly won't).

Anyways, do they send snail mail letters for interviews or just rejections? Anyone with experience?

Thanks

I received the invite to interview by e-mail... but I think others got a phone call, so the method might just depend !

Hi melv55, how long did it take for you to receive the secondary by email? I was verified, and my file sent to Western on December 17 2008, and I have still not heard from them yet...

Verified/sent to schools on 9/4
Received secondary invite 9/16
Received interview invite 11/15 (my DO letter of rec wasnt received right away, I was complete 11/14 and received the invitation to interview the next day)

Hope that helps- PM me if you need any more info!

I did not submit my primary until 1/14, does anyone thing I have a chance? Anyone have an idea of how full the class is already???

well, you never know until you know... but in my opinion, i would say yes. It will take a few weeks for your primary to be verified, then time for Western to review the primary, and decide if they want to send you a secondary, then if given, the time to fill out and be complete with a secondary and LORs, then time to review that to decide if you are given an interview, then time for the admissions committee to review the interviewees, and then they would need to look at how many seats, if any, are still available. People have been at this since June.

My point being, you are quite late in the game, but you never know until you know. 😱

Hey everyone I'm curious as to if Western has a limit on how many rotations you can do in one specialty. I know some schools give you 4 or 5 electives for the 4th year but some limit the number of rotations you can do in the same elective to two or so thus limiting the number of away audition rotations you can do.

Does anyone have access to the handbook or manuel? Can you confirm if Western has any such limit? Thanks!

Hi everyone, so I'm a little late on joining this forum, but whatever...

I have a Feb 26th interview...anyone else?

According to the catalog on WesternU's website:

"In order to foster a comprehensive fund of general osteopathic clinical skill and knowledge, the college will limit the number of elective clerkships in any single discipline (e.g., radiology, surgery, etc.) to not more than three elective rotations. The Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific may grant exceptions to this elective limit policy should an extraordinary situation arise."

Here's the link for the catalog:

Or, from WesternU's homepage, select current students--> catalog--> COMP.

I am canceling my interview on Feb 19th at Western. Good luck to those who are waiting for an interview! all the best! 👍

As someone already posted, the limit is three. It was like that when I was there as well. Fourth year, we had to do an AI in medicine and surgery, and one rotation in EM, the rest were all electives. Seven electives, if I recall.

Since I was interested in EM, and had to do one as a core rotation, I had the option of doing three more EM rotations.

Thank you as well tkim! I am curious though, so your saying there you could potentially do 4 rotations in one discipline such as ortho or rads? 1 home rotation and 3 away?

I think what tkim means is if your audition rotations are in the specialty as one of your core (required) rotations, then you can have 4 rotations in that specialty. His audition rotations were in emergency medicine, and so because of the rules, he was limited to 3 elective rotations in EM. However, because EM is one of the core rotations, add that on top, and you get 4.
According to the catalog, the core rotations for 4th year are emergency medicine, medicine sub-I, and surgery sub-I.

Fourth year
The fourth year is comprised of 40 weeks of clinical instruction and learning experiences. Required (core) rotations (Emergency Medicine, Medicine Sub-I and Surgery Sub-I) must each be a minimum of 4 weeks in length.
1 Emergency Medicine
1 General Medicine (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, etc.) – this rotation is served as a subinternship (Sub-I).
1 Surgery (General or subspecialty or procedural specialty)– this rotations is served as a subinternship (Sub-I).
Electives (up to 70 units)
Essentials of Clinical Medicine VI (replaces Essentials of Family Medicine II for students entering the 4th year in 2008)
Total credits required in the fourth year: 103.50

I did my subI surgery with ortho, so technically I could have done three more ortho rotations as well. I don't know if this will fly now, but it did when I was there.

hey, are you already accepted? the absolute best resource is the university's Banweb site. because lots of your fellow students will post there. also, people who have rented to students, specifically western students, know about this site and post here. i live with two of my classmates in claremont for <500/mo and i would not have found this without banweb.

also, if you are a single female worrying about safety, try to avoid pomona proper. claremont is extremely safe.

Claremont is so safe it almost makes me nauseated sometimes. Unless you are afraid of trophy wives running you over with their baby strollers because they are late to yoga because the range rover ran out of gas this morning, well, yeah, there still are risks.

On a side note, Upland was supposed to be even safer. This line of reasoning held until I woke up to gunshots one morning from a guy being shot to death by the police on the wall outside of my house. Thankfully it was a stone wall 👍👍👍👍
