Western/COMP Discussion Thread 2008-2009

I am in exactly the same place as you. I grew up in la, and went to uc riverside. I was accepted to both azcom and western, and I am picking azcom because I think that will fit me best. It is a change of scenery, and i definitey think both schools are equal as far as preparing for the boards and residencies. It is cheaper to live in az, which is really important for me since loans are going to add up in 4 years. I feel that it is close enough to home and yet no distractions (only a 1 hr plane ride). plus the area is way nicer than pomona. thats why i am choosing azcom.
well...i figured there would be someone else ub my boat. Im pretty much decided on AZCOM as well.
Only things that are holding me back......
i like the systems based curricullum....but i guess i can get over that
i feel like western had a better match list this year....
the match list is the big thing.
Who do you guys think?

It also depends on what the students wanted... I might look at where they matched within the specialty.
as has been mentioned over and over on these forums, we are not at the stage where the match lists are very meaningful. you have to take into account that many of those people chose their specialty and it's hard to evaluate residency programs without being too familiar with all the different hospitals.
your preference for specialty may not necessarily be reflected in the match list because those students WANTED to go primary care.
I jsut dont want to be a terrible desicion.

COMP has a ton of specialties and AZCOM has few.
COMP is mostly CA too which is nice for me but not as big a deal as the specialties.
Also the class sizes are diffrent which also changes things i realize.
I just dont want to handicap myself by going to AZCOM....but i also realzie that i dont know much at this point and im not sure how much these lists reflect my future.

I'm just saying that perhaps the students at AZCOM have been more inspired to go into primary care, you just don't know what their top choices were.
Whatever specialty you end up choosing (primary or not), I'm sure either school will get you there.

Only the first summer is off. You get about 6 weeks off. From then on you are studying for your Step 1 and starting rotations.
there is actually someone from canada in our class (2012) i think. i'd encourage you to contact admissions.
heeey there, you've probably made up your mind already but i thought i'd throw in my two cents...
i'm a first year and from CA and attend western. with the incredible, immense amount of pressure, i would not have survived if i didn't have something familiar, some kind of support. some of us are like that, and some of us thrive in a completely foreign situation, but i can just let you know right now that if i went to AZCOM i'd be so much more miserable.
another thing that makes a difference in finding a support system of people easily is class size. western is pretty darn big already, but AZCOM woulda been a bit too much. you obviously will get your cliques whereever you go, but smaller class size definitely has its merits.
and cost of living...really...well...my monthly rent is currently UNDER $500. and in AZ, you'll drive just as much as you will in CA. there are options, you just need to find em.

I am the opposite I moved from a really small town from a totally different state. I think change is a very good thing, and alows you to grow as a person. But I think Western is awsome. I have made many new friends which are now my support system. Everyone is friendly and the staff is amazing. For a fairly big class I feel that most people know most people, and are will to help you out if you need it.
I would say CA is prety expencive but I am paying $600 a month and I live in a really nice town house about 2 miles away from school. It just takes some hunting around.

Montana girl, are you NW Track then? If so, can you tell us your experience with it so far?
i just called western and they told me that the decision was sent via snail mail....so based on what everyone said, i'm guessing that's a rejection. has anyone gotten a interview offer via snail mail? if not, it was good talking to you guys! thanks for the support!

Sorry dangit!...From what I recall, snail mail = rejection and email = interview. But until you have the letter in your hand you're still in the game. I kept thinking I was rejected but then I finally got the email so there still is hope!
pre-interview: Email = Interview
post-interview: Letter can mean anything. I got accepted with letter.
I stand corrected....but what i do know for sure is that they will tell u if you got in on the phone....but antyhing else they wont tell you. Then again...maybe some of the admin office people dont play by the rules.
I dont know. I think im going to AAZCOM either way now...even if i get in......but im sure ill reconsider if i get an acceptance.

As happy as I am right now, I can't help but feel a little nervous...
I didn't expect that the interview dates offered would be so far away, though (late Jan, early Feb). I wish I could ask for an earlier date, the next 2 months are gonna drag out like eternity!

I am thinking of trying to staple Jell-o to something like a tree...which is a difficult proposition.
but then again, I am also reminded of that prank from The Office where they put a stapler inside of Jello.
oh and iluvmed&ba6eekh -- GOOD LUCK in your upcoming interview! that is a long ways from now... so just try to focus on other things for the time being, dont wanna psyche yourself out.

I received my completion e-mail roughly a week after submitting my secondary. Oddly enough, I received an interview invite several hours later, although I was expecting a wait of at least a few weeks.
Thanks everyone....now I just gotta wait till January (hopefully 22)

I received an interview notification from Western today and they didn't even send me a secondary to complete, so I find that a little strange. They told me that I have 30 days from this interview letter to submit my secondary, and they also stated that I can schedule my interview now before I even submit my secondary.
I was wondering for those people that were interviewed at Western, did you receive your invitation prior or after completion of your secondary? Does Western only send out secondaries to people who they wish to interview?
Anyways, Western is one of my top choices, so I'm very glad that I got an interview invite.

Some people receive an interview invite only after submitting a secondary while other people receive an interview invite along with the secondary. Consider yourself lucky to be in the latter group.👍

so i just received an interview invite from them as well but there is nothing about a secondary in the email... is it possible that i wont have to do a secondary??
You definitely have to do the secondary. If they don't send you one, you should request it. I believe they just want you to have all your stuff in by your interview day.
There were a few people in my group who got blue slips in their interview day folder that said they had to go meet with an adviser because they were missing items from their file. I'm assuming some of those people were in your category and just hadn't gotten everything in on time. I don't think they were penalized or anything, they just told them to get their stuff sent in asap.

so another quick question do you guys think that for the people who are given the interview+secondary together, that their secondary isnt looked at as in depth?

I wouldn't count on your secondary being glazed over...I would assume from this point on you are lumped in with everyone else who has interviewed. Rock your secondary and interview and you should have no trouble.
It seems like a very high percentage of interviewees are either accepted or drawn from the waitlist. I don't know the percentage though.
I just received confirmation of my interview on Jan 29 today. I also just mailed out my secondary out with a nominal fee of 65 dollars today as well. I rushed my essay composition for my secondary last night and read it over twice, I'm praying that I did a half-decent job and didn't make any serious errors.
I'm hoping for the best.
