what are some clinically strong D-Schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Some just off of the top of my head in no particular order:

UOP
ASDOH
Temple
Western

USC and Creighton are both clinically strong.

doesn't every school claim to be "clinically strong" ?

Claims are one thing reality is another. You can become a strong clinical dentist out of almost any dental school but some are focused on getting their students into specialties more than becoming great clinicians, you can also specialize out of any school. I listed USC and Creighton because USC has a huge number of clinical requirements with very high standards and you start drilling before orientation is even over. Plus it's the only school that has every specialty program and you get to spend time in all of those departments. I listed Creighton because they don't have any specialty programs so you get to try your hand at everything without having a bunch of specialized cases scooped from you. It's not an exhaustive list but without a doubt some schools are much better clinically than others.

Temple comes to mind..... 80,000 patients per year, enough said

UCONN saw over 96,000 patients last year between their on campus clinic, specialty clinics, and community out reach clinics. I know they don't start you as early as some, but it seems like you don't have a lack of patients when you get going.

I'm happy people are actully giving suggestions based on # of pt. When I clicked on this I was expecting a bunch of BS responses "all dental schools have strong clinical aspects - after all 'a dental school is a dental school'".

.. one person mentioned UoP. Have you heard if UoP having a three year program limits your clinical experience? Why do you think it is above average?

How many times do you have to do a procedure before you get good at it? Having to do more procedures doesn't equate to being strong clinically. It's all about your own personal capabilities. Some people need to do 30 crowns before they're adept, while some can master the art within 3-5.

I can personally attest that the two AZ schools (ASDOH and Midwestern) heavily emphasize on clinical skills as opposed to research. In fact, during my interview they brought up the fact that although my extensive work in research is impressive that it ultimately doesnt matter to their school. ASDOH I believe will focus more on community outreach while Midwestern caters to the more widespread mindset of preparing their students for private practice.

Schools like Harvard, UW and UCSF, however, take a particular shine to research in addition to givng their students clinical skills.

loma linda,

of course i say that because Im a D2 here, but I actually knew how strong clinically it was before I ever applied.

Disagree.

Yes some get the hang of it quicker than others, but I'm not sure anyone "masters" it after 3 - 5 crowns. Repetition makes even the best, better.

Some that immediately come to mind with clinically heavy curriculum are Marquette, Detroit Mercy, Temple, and Creighton (in no particular order).
