Nice Thread OP...

Waiting for the die-hards and try-hards to turn this into a 5-page thread!

Intro Sociology/Women's Studies really ought to be obligatory. As a white person stupidly or willfully ignorant or the social and cultural benefits of my race/sex/class... let me tell you why URM status is reverse racism.

FYI, your argument is based on the false assumption that seats are reserved for minorities.

I'm pretty sure they are, at least I have heard that at my state med school they group applicants into different needs of the med school and when they take from the wait list they'll take you if they need one person from your "need" group (URM, non-trad, heavy research guy)

I personally am very confused as to why URM refers to race of ethnicity?

I know this has probably been stated before, but this is a long thread and I read a page without really finding any explanation. On the first page, LizzyM posted a link to the explanation, but upon reading the definition it only mentioned ethnicity and race.

Hmm...what about mixed races? 10% African american? 35% Native American? Is there a cut off point of some sort?

I usually don't post in debate threads like this one, but I've learned a lot from all of this.

Many arguments listed on here are VERY strong and impressive! My head hurt trying to decide what I think, and many posts changed my opinion a couple times.

In the end, though,

1) Is the URM box overall more beneficial to have in MD applications? Yes

2) Can it be improved/changed(?) to serve its purpose more effectively and efficiently? Probably

3) Should one complain about URM's stealing others' spots? Absolutely not. Just try harder.

Sorry if you want me to elaborate on why, but it would be just restating many arguments that people have already posted in a different order. + I suck at debating

I can see just by reading everyone's English that you all are very very intelligent... makes me want to cry because I'm basically competing against all of you guys to get into a medical school!😡

There is no URM box. Look for it on the AMCAS application; you will not find it. There are pull down menus for race & ethnicity. There are also spaces to indicate where you were born, what languages you speak, where you live, and optional sections describing where your parents live (county or country), and an optional section to describe disadvantages you experienced before age 18. All of this information may be taken into account in choosing applicants for interview and choosing applicants for admission.

The "URM box" is an easy shorthand for self-identifying as one of the "Underrepresented in Medicine" races/ethnicities. Namely, African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American.

To the question further up, if you're mixed race, its whatever you self-identify as. I *think* that they might want tribal affiliations for people that put down Native American, but its been years since I've looked at the actual application.

How did the freshman premed pwned thread get deleted yet this thread still remains?
