Hey guys,
So may be an odd question but I will be graduating here in the next week. I will have about a 6-7 month time gap period before dental school starts. Have any of you had this similar thing happen? I'm mainly curious about what you did during your gap time like regarding jobs. Does the job I get have to be in the field or is it not important to get a job in the field. Also side note I haven't been accepted anywhere yet and obviously that 6-7 months could possibly become a year and half lol. Thanks for any help!

I didn’t get in my first time around (not saying you won’t!) but I started working as a dental assistant. I had about a year and a half of work by the time I applied again. I got in this year and I really think my work as a dental assistant helped because that’s about the only thing that changed from the first to the second cycle! Even working as a receptionist at a dental office will give you good practice and knowledge of how an office runs. Hope this helps! Hopefully you get in this year! 🙂

Did you by chance have to go to school for assisting? Or what did you do for that?

It depends on the state whether or not you need to go to school and be certified to be a dental assistant. In some states, the dentist can train you on the job and you don't need a certification. You need a certification to take x-rays in any case, though.

I actually got hired as a hygiene assistant (cleaned & set up rooms for hygienist and sat & scheduled their patients) and they trained me on the job to be a dental assistant after 6 months. They sent me to an x-ray course and a polishing course so I’m on the same level as the other dental assistants.
