Hi,

I am currently a senior doing a nutritional sciences degree and was wondering if you guys could give me some opinions or advice.

URM: Hispanic (Latino)

Current Overall GPA: 2.98
(From 3 colleges combined)
Science GPA: 2.62

Science Courses Taken

Chem 1( First time=C, Second Time= B)

Chem 2 (B-)

Ochem 1 (C- first time, C+ second time)
Ochem 2 (C)

Bio 1 (C- first time, had to retake because it didn't transfer so second time was a B-)
Bio 2 (B-)

Calculus (C-)

Still need to take physics.

Currently taking microbiology, genetics, biochemistry

ECs

Work Experience

Over 3000+ hours of CNA work at hospitals, still increasing hours

Volunteer:

RA in one of biggest studies which is a nation wide study: Currently volunteer 5 hrs a week
Future poster presentations in the works

Hospital Volunteer: 50 Hrs

Currently in undergrad program focused on maternal and child health, only 9 undergrad programs of its kind in US.

Going to volunteer in food pantry this year

Officer in 2 clubs at university

Shadow:

5 Hrs with Geriatric Specialist

Will still continue to shadow more.

I am doing an extra year, due to transferring freshmen year and my major.

My freshmen year was the worst with a 2.75, 2.5. My mom passed away that year and ever since it has been hard to deal with her passing.

I know I will still most likely have to try and go to a post-bac program or take classes on my own, if I would like to continue with med school.
I am hoping I can start Med school by 27, so I have some time, currently 21. So any opinions that you guys have, I would really appreciate it, my overall goal is med school, that is the big dream.

To add to that, since I am taking that extra year, I do have the opportunity to take more classes or retake the courses I did bad in, so should I try and take higher level classes, or what should I do. Thank you

You need to take enough undergraduate level courses in a post bacc (DIY post bacc at a local college is fine) to increase both your sGPA and cGPA to 3.0 . You also need to score at least 500 on the MCAT so do not take the MCAT until your practice scores are consistently over 500.

Hi,

So should I graduate and then retake the basic courses? And does it matter if I retake them at a community college?

You do not need to retake the basic courses. Concentrate on science courses that you have not taken yet. Community college is fine.

If I take other science courses that I have not taken yet, where would they fall in place regarding my GPA? Would they go under undergraduate GPA, or graduate GPA?

Not all Latinos are URM/ What community do you represent? And I don't mean the Bronx.

Undergraduate courses at a community college would be included under your undergraduate GPA.

I have heard that before and I believe that it was in relation to Cubans? Is that true? Is there any other group of Latinos included in that?

Most Latinos, like Colombians or Cubans, are ORM, or rather, are not considered URM. However, each school gets to decide who is URM or not. The FL and NYC schools seem to consider Puertorriquenos as URM, for example. Spanish language skills are always welcome, and service to communities of color even more so.

Even if I already graduate with a bachelors degree before doing the courses in community college?
