Where all ma late applicants at!?!?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wanted to jump on this train and see what y'all think....

Verified AMCAS primary application 10/18, received secondaries from 12 of 13 schools to which I applied. Submitted 8 secondaries in the past couple weeks - have one II from a state school. I plan to submit secondaries to Brown and Georgetown in the next couple of days.

I have secondaries for JHU and Duke but I am leaning towards not submitting because they are reach schools. I don't want to waste the money or spend the time -- Duke's secondary has 5 essays.

MCAT 33Q, cGPA 3.75, sGPA 3.6. ECs are the strongest part of my application. Non-traditional applicant. Thoughts?

I'll add that I got the final secondary I was missing JUST NOW from UNC. Other thoughts?

There is hope! TX resident- Completed TMDSAS on 9/1 for 5 school (UTSW, UTH, TxA&M, UTMB, UT-El paso). Final secondary (for UTSW) complete on 9/24. MCAT scores sent on 9/24.

4.0, 34Q. Non-traditional (nursing major)

3 II's for UTSW (Oct 27th), UTMB (Dec 6th), UTH (Nov 30th).

1 acceptance today for UTSW! It's my 1st choice so I'm going to withdraw my scheduled interviews for the other two schools.

Just had my first interview this past week (was complete with this school 5 weeks ago). Only two of the dozen people there had previous interviews--one each. One of those persons commented that he was an "early" applicant and he still hasn't heard from many of his safety schools. Check the reject thread...there are still lots of schools in the reviewing stage. Don't lose hope 🙂

My roommate just submitted his AMCAS last week and is just now collecting letters of rec. I didn't want to say anything, but would it be fair to say that his chances of getting in anywhere this cycle are pretty slim? I want to push him toward applying for a grad program or trying to get a job, but he's pretty set on med school, and of course I'm not his mom, I'm just his concerned roommate/friend. 🙂

Depending on when his LOR writers send in his LORs, he pretty much signed his death sentence. I doubt someone with amazing stats would be unaware how late in the cycle it is, seeing as so many schools have already passed their deadlines. Unless your friend has 4.0/45 and his LORs are in the mail, he's gonna have a bad time.

Just got my second II!

Schools accept 50% of those they interview. This means I have 100% chance of getting an acceptance!!

Can't. tell. if. humor. or?...

(1/2)(1/2) = (1/4) chance of getting accepted at both... Or a 50% shot at each. 😎

though most schools it isn't quite a 50% chance. Its usually between 33%-48% (ish)

My application also was delayed by some circumstances and I didnt submit many of my secondaries until mid October. Even just got a secondary from Wake this week that I have to finish.

I've had 1 Rejection and 1 pre-interview hold and still waiting to hear back from about 17 schools.

I'm not worried for a few reasons:

1) Most schools are flooded by the initial wave of applicants, so as they're starting to see the surface of those applicants, they'll get to us.

2) October, November, and December seem to be horrible months for anything to get done around a university. Many schools in this time frame have Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and I believe an AMCAS meeting that occured in early October which shut down many adcoms. Its a logical assumption that after the holidays, everything will speed up greatly.

Not sure if lack of statistics or what, haha.

1 - (.5*.5) = 0.75

75% shot if mutually exclusive for getting an acceptance... I'd take those odds. Think of it as a parallel circuit 🙂

I still have a bunch of secondaries to complete. Right now I'm working on VCU, Eastern VA, George Washington, Temple, and Drexel. Are any of these not worth applying to at this point because they have aggressive rolling? Anyone else applying to these schools?

man i have not submitted my secondaries for GWU, tulane, temple, and iowa. do you guys think i should just turn them in this weekend? is it a waste of money?

I think GW puts lots of people on hold, so I don't know how much rolling matters. You might get noticed there. I've been "complete" at VCU for 2 months....not even marked "reviewed" or "under review." Don't know about the others...

thought i was alone here... good to see all you other procrastinators =)

I still have to finish a few secondaries...

If I was complete mostly in September, and I still haven't heard back from a majority of schools, is that normal?

Has anyone experienced this: you receive a few invites in the beginning and then dead silence for a few months. Then (hopefully) you receive a flurry of interviews?

That's one the schools I opted not to apply to. My Loma Linda window time is up and I have to finish the app (they interview non-SDA people later, so I'm good). This essay writing is exhausting.

I interviewed at LLU yesterday and I have to say it was great. Great area (weather awesome, a lot of interesting cases from San Bernardino lots of pathology and diverse population)..really nice faculty...(taking to the director and assistant dean was so easy...very conversational..along with the interviews). Some of the facilities are older...but the the newer ones (simulation center and anatomy lab) are really nice. My interview group was VERY diverse (a lawyer, immigrant from Iraq, Canadian, opera singer, sports team announcer) and really friend and down to earth. They are very straightforward with their Christian beliefs but understanding at the same time. Really good experience.

Still no II :/ Complete late sep- mid october (1/2 in sep)

5 rejections, grrr

I know that feeling. Similar completion time (I'm maybe a week behindyou) and the past month has been "All Quiet on the Western Front." :/

Just got an II from UNC today. IS re-applicant. I was complete 11/16. This is great news because I thought I got blackballed after doing poorly in my interview last year! Yay! Keep your heads up everyone. There is hope.

Oh, that's encouraging, maybe! I'm submitting Georgetown today... my final secondary. Then the waiting game begins...

Long time stalker, first time poster.

I turned in my AMCAS on September 24th, verified on October 22nd.

Turned in secondary apps for Harvard on Oct 22nd, Baylor Nov 4th, Stanford Nov 17th, and UPenn Nov 19th.
Got an II from Stanford on Nov 22nd. Have not heard anything from the other three schools.

For TMDSAS (I'm a Texas resident): Turned in my primary for 3 Texas schools on Oct 1st, verified on Oct 19th.
II from UTSW on Oct 22nd for Nov 17th. II from UTMB on Nov 6th for December. Still waiting for UTHouston.

you already have two interview invites...what's the big deal?

you are clearly getting into medical school because your 5 day interview turnaround at stanford means you have at least a 3.9, 37 mcat, and crazy research experience.

Not quite...I guess you are right that I should not freak out too much.

I finished up my secondaries in early-mid October and thought I was screwed, but over the past week and a half I've actually had a bit of luck. IIs at Harvard, Stanford, and Penn so far. There's still a lot of time to hear back!

4 II, 4 rejections so far. I'm really happy considering I submitted most secondaries in late Sept./early Oct. and my stats are pretty average (MCAT 31-34, GPA ~3.5 from an Ivy if that matters). I'm sure I have about a dozen more silent rejections, and none of my II's were from reach schools, but so far I'm just grateful that I've had some success. I'm also glad I applied to a wide range of schools...and as happy as I am, it still really sucks being a late applicant 🙁 I mean, I knew applying in September/October would hurt my chances but it seems for some schools applying anytime after July virtually kills your chances...and, consequently, your soul.

Just to clarify, those 4 interviews didn't all result in rejections, right? Please tell me you're still waiting to hear back from them :xf:

Oh yes, sorry if the wording was confusing . I would DEFINITELY NOT be feeling remotely "happy" if I had gone to 4 interviews and had been outright rejected from every single one :scared: I've only gone to one and haven't heard back--the other three are in the near future :xf:

Good to hear. Doesn't it suck when you get an interview invite only for it to be scheduled 2+ months away. It feels good after the first few days and then you start to feel exactly like you did prior to getting the interview

Good luck!

don't know if it's normal or not. but it's been silent for me =/

Wow, congrats on the II and thanks for sharing the good news! I was complete at my IS school on 11/16 too. I've been telling myself it's "too early" to hear back about II already (mostly to calm my nerves, I think), but seems you heard back quickly? You must have had a strong app!

Also, this might be a question for a separate thread, but have any of you noticed a correlation between the time it takes to receive secondary app and time to receive II?

I was really excited to get a quick response from the schools I applied to (received secondary a day or two after AMCAS complete in early October), and was hoping a "good sign" might be a quick turnaround with the next step of the process too. But, I can't tell if there's really any connection? It could be just that I applied at the "right time," with AMCAS and now completed secondary app is just waiting to be reviewed? I didn't expect this process to be so stressful...

I don't think many schools do extensive primary application screening so secondary applications are sent out to applicants very quickly after AMCAS verification. The real waiting time begins once the secondary application is submitted. The length of this waiting period varies between schools and applicants to the same school (seems pretty random to me).

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! I'm pretty sure at least one of the schools I applied to screens out people if they lack shadowing experience and are not top out-of-state candidates, but I'm not sure about the rest of the app; seems I could have just lucked out with the quick response! :luck:

The waiting period after the secondary apps definitely seems more stressful to me, but hope that patience will pay off, eventually 🙂

At first, I was feeling like I couldn't stand waiting until March to hear from my IS school. Now I've settled into the uncomfortable "whatever" of accepting the fact that I won't know where I'm going for a LONG time.

It is amazing how happy an II can make me, only for me to feel like, "but why haven't I heard back from the other schools?" just later the same day. It is definitely a roller coaster.

I'm now happy to be sitting on two acceptances by the end of november having submitted late, MD only.

Here's a time line.

MCAT 7/14, AMCAS verified 9/17, Secondaries ~9/27, Interview invites early October, Attended late October/ all of November, Acceptances (USF & FIU) late November.

First post, I've read SDN for a while but never signed up. I was verified for ~10 schools on 9/15 so far only had 2 rejections and 1 pre-interview hold. Is this normal for this late in the game? Am I just on the reject later pile? I'm really itching to hear anything at this point.

Stats are 3.4 (good upward trend), 35P good ECs, low clinical experience, good research.

Your timeline is roughly the same as mine, and your stats are just slightly better. My experience has been silence so far as well. Not a single invite. :-( I'm hoping it's the lag.

Agreed. The endless (and various types of) waiting is just torture.

Good luck to you too! And congrats on your acceptance!! 🙂

Same, I had a mini-panic attack reading posts in the school specific forum and needed a little verification that this waiting was normal, thanks for the commiseration and Good Luck to you!
