Where are my UCLA classmates (Class of 2009)?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats to all those accepted and I look forward to meeting you all this fall.

I have had the worst case of senioritis since I got my acceptance. I have a 10 page paper due tomorrow at noon and I havent even started.

By the way, you should all check the website http://uclasod.dent.ucla.edu/ for some great news concerning UCLA research funding and a widely publicized breakthrough by our associate dean of research in early detection of cancer. 👍,

Lastly, what is everyone planning on doing this summer? I will probably by backpacking and island hopping through the south pacific for june, july and part of august. If any of you are planning on being in Tonga this summer please feel free to drop me a line. I may have some extra space in my beautiful private beach-front villa (aka my tent thats falling apart)

Seriously, I am really interested to hear what you guys are doing before we all start 4 years of continuous school.

To my 2009 classmates, I'm curious how many of ya'll already have your living arrangements set.

I was just granted housing in Weyburn.
And despite the horror stories...I accepted the position. Now I just gotta find a roommate who is available for move-in by July (I applied for a 2 bedroom townhouse).

Lucky! I blew all my money on a recent Eurotrip so my only vacation will include a week in Toronto (for a conference).

And if anyone is interested in going to Tanzania (~Mt. Kilimanjaro) next summer, let me know.

When did you apply? I also applied for housing in Weyburn, but I think it might've been a little late. (I'm not too concerned with the horror stories either... I guarantee I've lived in worse places).

Haha, nothing that interesting. I'll be working for a moving company, but I will get to travel all throughout the south and earn a pretty nice paycheck.

I actually applied a month ago. But I think the UCLA SOD's distribution of allotted spaces is independent of the application submission date.
...Eh, I'll just post Sarah's e-mail for clarification purposes.

Dear Incoming Dental Student,

You have been selected to receive an allocated position for our on-campus
Weyburn Terrace apartments. These are the newest on-campus apartments
available for graduate students. If you have a family, we also have
positions for family housing.

In order to receive a position, you must respond back to this email by
tomorrow, Thursday 28th 3pm.

Please indicate if you would like the Weyburn Terrace apartments, another
on-campus apartment building, or family housing. This choice must also be
reflected in your housing application. Please go onto the housing website
at: www.housing.ucla.edu/myhousing and fill out the “Graduate Housing
Application”. It will cost you $30 and you must have your UID and pin
number. This is a critical step in order to receive one of these positions.

We hope you take advantage of this opportunity.

Take care~

Hi, everybody, congradulation on all those accepted and those who are still thinking about coming =)

last couple days after the talent show is pretty hectic for me. without mentioning sch, i draw 4 hrs round trip to attend ucsd free dental clinics pacific beach site renovation/opening ceremony. pretty cool to hear the sd govt official declared 4-18 UCSD Free Dental Clinics Project Day at san diego. the current cda president and ex ada president along with many famous dentists attended. it was quite a success. the whole point about this free dental clinic concept is to solve the access problem developing in our country. if a city without a dental school could have 3 different sites to provide free dental treatment, it is likely the other cities could adapt similar models.

anyway, enough lecturing. so i had great deal of fun and learned alot from organized dentistry as well. but the thing is i had a whole operative lab to catch up with and in addition to the
139021380912830098023 hrs to fix my topodont. also that wk, we had preventive poster project and 20 min presentation. you guys will love that next yr. u will learn so much and so much fun to get out of our classroom and still learn.

and on friday, i finally passed my teeth cleaning requirement after n times cleaning. sigh, at least my teeth is clean.

hey, any guys or gals interested in bball? i helped out at the ASDA basketball tournament among all 3 dental sch in LA. quite a success. so come join us next year.

then sch is boring again till after midterm when we have dental olympic where we will compete our hand skills and knowledge in jeopardy rounds. soon we will post up flyers for that.

and then we have asb boat dance and cda convention next wk.

but now, need to go to the books. At least i can say for my whole class that we feel very behind right now. let's pray for us to pass the crown prep.

alright, i guess i typed this long msg to say one thing. sorry that i wasnt able to get back to sdn since the talent show. it is very nice to meet you all. even though our group is kinda splitted up, i hope everybody had fun. btw, pm me if u want to see some pic and there is a 5 bucks dvd for your memory. and dont forget u could show ur talent next yr too =)

good luck to my fellow classmates on their midterms

Wow! Just reading your email gets me excited for dental school! Sounds like a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun. Work hard, play hard. =) So, what is the ASB boat dance I heard about? Is it a formal dance? Where is the boat taking you? Sounds like fun!

definitely, we need a good balance to keep sanity in our life. pls dont get a false image that life is all good at ucla. just like neuroanatomy, all those neural circuit has check and balances. and even if it is not written out on a diagram, it could still be there =)

i donno that much about the boat dance. i think it is the first time getting the ticket will be harder than getting the date, jk. they sold out very fast. it is a good break to celebrate and cure the pre/post-midterm syndrome.
the asb does a lot more things than just boat dance. we had many visits to Las Vegas, mammoth snowboarding trip, a bunch of other things. as long as you pass all ur classes(assuming not shooting for epr), there are plenty of chances to have a decent life.

let's go back to reality. this quarter goes by so fast. cant believe it is midterm already. seriously, i havent touched any books at all this quarter. we spent a great deal of time working at the lab(just like other students). and restorative is pretty tough. u r likely to come back during wkend and after class for projects. good news that ur classmates will be with u. and we usually watch dvd to "kill time." a lot of us spent ~2 hrs to work on the occlusal reduction, and nick the teeth while we do axial reduction, so we end up have to start over. but all those lab really improve my manual dexerity. like today, we spent another 3 hrs on taking impression. it just feels good to pour a really good impression at the very end. We just have to live for that moment of success. Until, the cast cracked and back to step1. frustrating?

hw for you guys. i m not concern about our energy level. i m more concern how we deal with stress and failure/mistakes. are u ready to take 8 midterms/finals? i feel like stress management is an elective class that we are taking conjunction with our labs. it might be wise to think of some strategy now just in case. let me suggest a quick solution and you could help out if u want. ask the 2nd years. they are the best. there are times that i have no clue what to do. with their experience, we could get our project done smoothly. In conclusion, treat the 2nd years really really well. Get that? 😉
alright, i m ready to hit the books. still want to come to ucla and be a good dentist?

Yes. I still want to go there and be a GOOD dentist, not just any dentist.

It sounds like dental lab work requires a lot of patience.

hey everyone,

congratulations on getting accepted to UCLASOD! wow, i remember when i was posting on the class of 2008 thread not too long ago. i know UCLA has been having a bad rep concerning academic structure (too much focus on didactics) and patient recruitment, but don't worry...quite a few of us are working on implementing some changes. before i keep babbling, i'd like to introduce myself. my name is amy and i am the class of 2008 web-coordinator (a.k.a. webmistress). please feel free to visit our class website: www.something-obscure.com or www.uclasod2008.cjb.net
we try to do everything on the web to make distributing material more efficient (it's also a great way for people who don't like attending classes to get their stuff). any of you interested in working on the web stuff for your class? i'd gladly pass down tips and help you get started. 😉

anyhoo...don't stress about dental school too much and just enjoy your summer. the material in school isn't tough...but just the long days do wear you down. however, balance is key...it's not true that dental students study all the time...in fact, a lot of us are involved in many social and extra-curricular activities and do absolutely fine.

alrighty...time to start studying for this quarter's classes. i can't wait to meet all of you! 🙂

Amy,

I love your website! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

The web site looks very professional. I was wondering if you guys video tape the lectures and put them on the web? I know they do that in some schools. Can you please get back to me about this? Also, I would be interested in working on the web.

Hi everyone,
I know this is a long one, but I couldn’t resist posting when I saw the subject of free/fun time come up—this, too was a very important concern I had while eagerly waiting for dental school to start. I am unfortunately (sigh!) not one of those students who learns things very easily. Though, damn. I have wished and ACHED for that every waking second these past months. You will find that some classmates have taken some of the lecture courses before in their undergrad, and they are truly blessed. A lot of people in my class also have a dentist in the fam. This is also a great blessing. More time for a more reassuring, balanced life. There is a range we all fall within:

1. Those who ace lecture AND lab.
2. Those who ace lecture and are hurting in lab.
3. Those who aren’t so hot in lecture classes, but totally rock in lab.
4. Those who feel like they are getting the shaft in BOTH lecture and lab.

I fall in category 4. Plus, no dentist in the fam. I’m the “trailblazer”, I guess. Chances are, some of you are reading this and saying to yourself “well, boo-hoo for her. But that is NOT gonna be me!” and I sincerely hope you don’t have do go through any of this either. When I realized I was a “4” it was very, very painful for me. I felt like the dumbest person in dental school. Noone could make it better, and people (professors and classmates) just couldn’t understand why I was (and still am) soooo slow at everything. It’s a very lonely place to be.

Speed is certainly of the essence here with 8-9 classes a quarter. And “quarter system”—need I SAY more? I thought I was prepared for the worst before dental school started, but evidently I wasn’t prepared enough for it. I don’t get to go out on fun school trips, I study during lunch, I don’t get a chance to enjoy Westwood, and I see very little of my loved ones. And when I actually found the time to go see a movie—which I hadn’t done in ages, it seems, I go and see Million Dollar Baby, which made me so sad, i wanted to go jump into the nearest trash can.

The reason I write this is NOT to depress you all, because it’s really important to stay excited and proud about being a dental Bruin. Yay! 😀 I know I still am, believe it or not. I am writing this because it’s also important to be ready for ANYTHING. We each have our own take on what dental school is like. Some of us will have more time for fun than others. Some of us will find the material less difficult than others. But you’ve been accepted because the school knows that you are capable. What I lack so much in book smarts and lab skills, I manage to make up for with patience, stubbornness, and a huge sense of humor—to laugh at myself, and the yucky predicaments I seem to always find myself in.

Sometimes you might feel all alone in this thing, like it all is just looming over you, and it’s 3 in the morning. To this, a second year told me, “But just remember that you are a BRUIN. And that sure don’t mean ur dumb.” The social scene is really fun and nice to be in on, but hey, I came here to be a dentist, first and foremost. That’s where my money’s going. The valued friends I make and have made will always be a very nice bonus. But it sure isn’t high school anymore, and you may find that being the toast of the party isn’t always the be-all and end-all like it used to be. At least this is what I learned after a crash-course in it the first few weeks. So, heaven forbid, if you do find yourself in a predicament such as mine, (being a “4”), rest assured that you will have plenty of in-class interaction with your fellow classmates in the next four years—just be there for one another, and try to put each other first as much as you can. Look out for and help one another and try to make sure no one is getting left behind. Keep your integrity intact and don’t welsh on your word. This is the mark of a professional, and the mark of a successful class and team. Your loyalty to each other as a class (none of that being sweet to someone’s face, but trash-talking behind their back) relates directly to how well you will do. Everyone’s always on their best behavior in the beginning, but the gloves have a sad tendency of coming off as school unfolds. Do your best not let this happen at all costs. It’s a wild ride, but not a day has gone by that I haven’t dragged myself back home and felt amazed by how much I managed to learn/ be exposed to in one day.

A sincere congratulations to all of you, as well as to our newest arrival, LSN, and may this adventure you face make becoming a dentist one day that much more precious to you!

Be well, all. 🙂
Sincerely, Sujain

Sujain-
That was probably one of the most meaningful posts I have read on SDN. You gave some really valuable advice that I will keep with me throughout dental school, and I'm sure you can remind me over and over again since I'll be your schoolmate! I know it sounds corny, but I thought you wrote an amazing post! I'm all about supporting eachother, helping eachother out and having a good time.

Its so funny that you mentioned what your friend said to you...because I would always tell UCLA dental students (when they were stressed), "don't complain...you're a BRUIN and I would do anything to be in your position at UCLA dental school." And that is something that I will always remind myself when I'm stressing out in d-school. It has been my dream to come to UCLA, and I can't believe I can finally say that I'm in and I never want to lose sight of that.

I can't wait to meet my "new family" for the next 4 years. I know we will all go through some hard times and good times together and I'm ready for the challenge!

If anyone from the LA area wants to meet up, PM me and I'll set something up.

Take Care and thanks again Sujain!

So happy to have been of help--thank you for your kind words, LSN! 🙂

All the Best, Sujain

I believe you are very courageous to post your true feelings. That shows how strong you are. I am sure the school load will come much easier with this mentality.

As LSN mentioned, this was one of the most meaningful posts on SDN.

Hey, Sujain,
Did you go to today's meeting? Dr Linderman and Dr Bibb and Dr Lefever all agree that interpersonal skill is very important in our profession. I dont care if we are all 4. But I will definitely give u an EPR for ur passion and dedication. Can u believe 1st year is almost over! And we survive. We worked really hard thru all those lectures, tests, labs, redos, projectors malfunction, "not to write on white boards". At least our hardwork does pay off. Let's focus and finish strong for our midterms.

For class of 2k9, the curriculum will make u study hard, harder than u could ever imagine. The nice thing is that we are all on the same boat. You will be surrounded by studious people who want to be good and successful dentists. This is a gift that you may or may not find in other dental school.

I get a silly question.
What have you bought ur mom for mother's day?
Any suggestion? Preferably something on the web. You could pm me if u dont want this thread to be moved. Thanks.

hey guys,
i just got back from an interview at ucla, and i just gotta say that it was the best interview experience of my life! it was so relaxed and stress-free. even though sarah mentioned that i was interviewing as an alternate in her email, i just have a feeling that somehow, i MIGHT get in this year. not only that, but i interviewed with a Clinical Professor Emeritus and he told me that he enjoyed our interview so much that he could not let me leave without letting me know that he wants me to matriculate at ucla! man, im soo stoked! hopefully, ill be high in the alternate list so that i can get accepted should any of you guys choose sf over la *insert subliminal msg - choose sf...choose sf...* 😛 good luck to all 🙂

hi EC, how are ya? And thank you so much, balance, i sure look forward to getting to meet all of you!

nooo, i wish i could have been at the meeting, but i was scheduled for my oral hygiene checkup for preventive class at that time. Speaking of dedication, i think all those representin' UCLASOD c/o 2009 here on sdn(including myself) would give you one meeeellion EPRs for all the valuable advice you've contributed to this thread. 😀 You rock, dude.

I was pondering the same thing for my Mamasita. If I find any good leads, i'll be sure to track u down...

jurrel, sounds like an awesome interview! i was on tenterhooks the entire time for mine! i personally hope noone on this thread leaves UCLA, cuz I'm growing attached to them, but i also wish you All the Best. Congratulations on your acceptance to USC! There are so many people wishing they could be in your position, too! 🙂

Take Care all,
Sincerely, Sujain 😛

Quick update on patients

I have chatted with 2 third years during bus ride. (ya, that's the nice thing about taking the bus. they cant escape me, hahaha) Both of them ensures me that we will get enough patients. The problem is whether they will follow through the entire treatment plan. Sitting 3 hrs each time aint the most ideal thing in the world. So, they told me that we will learn patient management very soon. And it is the requirement that is giving people a lot of trouble. Obviously, u dont want to fall behind. Amazingly, they told me that it is the limited amount of cubicles that is giving them trouble. Since 4th yrs get priority for the cubicle, a lot of them has to wait...

And from the meeting yesterday, patient management and interpersonal skill are crucial at the clinic. So, I m planning to observe at the clinic some time after the midterm to learn the routine and get ready for clinic(in distanced future).

Congratulations on UCLA acceptance!

You have done a wonderful job w/ Pre-dental student outreach program! 🙂

'nuff said. 😀 i'm gonna dig around and put our 2k8 thread up from last year... now where is it..

and all the class of 2009 is more than welcome to swing by and pay us a visit... though i have a feeling many of the posts will be midterm venting-related. 😉

well, here goes....

We are taking over this thread in the midst of all this stress. Well, I am feeling DOWN DOWN DOWN 😡 and :scared: . To add to toothpixie's list, a new category is defined. Type 5: those who seem to do fine on daily projects, with a once in a while compliment from your bench instructor and a humble moment of proudness.... except when it's time for the practical, no matter how many preps you thought you trained your hand n eyes to coordinate to, you choke.. BIG TIME, and that's when things seem to dwindle down. It doesn't happen just once, or twice.. but every time there's a lab practical, when it really counts.
I am still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Didn't mean to scare my new schoolmates. Congrats and it will be fun and a great learning experience. Exam time really sux, but we all manage to hang in there.. For now, pleeeeeeeeeeaaase enjoy your summer.

Ya, kinda frustrating yesterday, i had done my best class III prep ever then i realized i had nicked the adjacent tooth, so it is an automatic NP. then everything else goes downhill from there.

well, the good news is there are plenty of chances(6 more) to make up for that. And with neuro and fixed today, I m sure a lot of us will show our emotion here as well.

guys, can someone post or pm me about how AP credits work for applying to UCLA? i have a lot from high school for my science requirements, although i have taken many higher level science classes since that time and done well in them. its just that the UCLA website says in bold face that ap credits are unacceptable. does this pertain to other schools as well?

Hey, Shredder,
Are you applying for med sch or just dental school? I m not 100% sure about AP credits. I had taken AP Chem to exempt from a GChem class. They didnt give me tough time, so I guess it is ok. But they do want to have a lab course. you may want to ask Sarah and reply back to us to let us know too.

Unless you were already given credit for an undergraduate class with your AP credits, they're pretty much useless in applying to UCLA SoD. If you took college science courses while still in HS, those will show up on your college transcripts and will help with your GPA/courseload when applying here.

Oh, and to everyone sad about their operative midterm...my crown prep was a little over-reduced bucally. 🙁

Hey there fellow c/o 2009 classmates!
Since I was accepted not too long ago, I just recently paid my 200 dollar deposit online and "accepted" my acceptance on the URSA website. I have quite a few questions for those of you that have been "in" for a while, and I am sure that those of you that are in the class of '08 could answer a few of my questions.. (haha, I actually have a lot, so any advice would be great!)...I am sure I am jumping the gun on alot of these questions, so does anyone know if I will be receiving a second mailing that has more info on it? I feel my acceptance letter only had 3 additional pages with it that didnt really include too many details...

1. CPR certification? Do we need it before September?
2. Laptop? I see the sheet that has the "requirements" that our computer must fulfill, but is there a specific one we all need to buy?
3. Physical examination? Can I just go get one next week by my family doctor? Anything specific that I need done? (BTW--what sort of proof do we need to send in? Proof of vaccinations as well?)
4. Collecting teeth? Do we need to? I am sure we do, but I would like to get started as early as possible!

Thanks you all 😀 ...any advice would be awesome! (especially from you ecdoesit!!--youre always so helpful!)....hope im not being too anal-retentive with all of this! Hahaha...!!
Can't WAIT to meet all of you in September!!! 👍

recently, i have been getting way too many advice to tell me to study. so it is really hard to decide whether i should go on sdn or should i leave aim, or should i study. r u coming to cda convention? if u check out the ucsd free dental clinic booth, i will be there to answer all of ur questions.

but, now let me give u a preview.

1. yes, u should have it. check the post earlier for my strategy.
2. any laptop that satisfy that criteria. dont ask me who set those criterira cos i donno
3. physical exam is for ur own benefit. i certainly would get all those titer shots and make sure u have ur shots. (yes, this is shots not radiographs that we are talking about =) just ask ur family doc to go thru everything for u. remember HIPAA.
4. refer to my previous post.

Kudos, everyone!

And now that you've all gotten in...how are you guys all looking for housing? It looks like unless you are a regent scholar (those lucky ducks), chances are you will be living off campus. cho is pretty quiet... and craigslist is filled with summer sublets... any ideas?

if anyone is looking for a fun, but studious female roommate, you know who to pm. 😛

Hey LJCA-
Are you from the LA area?

Hi LSN. Yup, I'm an LA native... But, I've just come back from undergrad out east. So I'm still trying to figure out the housing situation in LA.

I just PMed you. Check your mailbox. 🙂

Wrong about the Regent's Scholar thing. Lots of people were given spots in Weyburn housing even though they weren't Regents Scholars. Just wait for the letter/e-mail from Sarah or e-mail her and ask her about it. Last year, I believe it was based on a simple lottery for housing.

Try to live close to school.

It is by lottery.

Quick question for the people already in LA: Which cell phone companies are the best out there? I'm fed up with my current one, and I'm going to switch pretty soon, but I don't want to switch to one that gets bad reception out there.

Also, what's the deal with football tickets?

As far as I know, you won't get reception anywhere in the dental school no matter what company you have. I have Verizon and I get reception in some areas of the dental school, and aside from all that, I am very happy with them.

I currently use verizon, and I am satisfied with the reception on campus. As far as football ticket goes, you can buy them individually and they are not hard to get unless its vs. usc.

The 3rd years did some research on this as they are required to get pagers or a cell service that works in the school. The winner for cell phone company is Sprint...it seems to be the only one that works in the most areas w/in the D school. I currently have T-mobile, which has the same coverage as Cingular. It works in some classrooms, but not all. Verizon around our school gets hardly any coverage, as experienced by some classmates. Hope this helps.
