Where are my UCLA classmates (Class of 2009)?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey,

Other than Dell, what other laptops have a 4 year warranty? I really want a Fujitsu but the max warranty is 3 years.

Yeesh. Money go down the hole....

Most of you probably got that huge envelope with sixteen points listed that are important to keep in mind, so here are some of my questions...

*That formalin jar for collecting teeth, is that for real? Are you guys going to start now?
*In regards to the CPR training, the letter recommends not getting certified till summer, so is that what you guys will be doing too?
*I'm not sure why we have such a long orientation that lasts from the 14th to the 23rd. Geez, that's almost ten day of orientation!

By the way, anyone going to the CDA meeting at Anaheim?

hi peeps,

that talent show EC is talking about is a school tradition. It's how us frazzled, and you soon-to-be first years are going to raise money for gold for your crowns and whatnot. well, that's basically all i really know about it-- anybody else is free to elaborate on it-- EC? ziptree?

How yall doing, by the way? =)

the formalin jars are for real... i sent out four to general dentists. That assures you a wide assortment of teeth-- not just molars. Incisors are few and far between, and it's the general dentists, not oral surgeons, who are most likely to get you some. I started collecting late summer, but if you start now, you won't regret it. I wish I had more, and the more, the better! Though i have heard that upperclassmen will help you out with teeth too... we are only going to start using real teeth next quarter. All this time we've been drilling ivorine teeth.

i did my CPR in the summer... less boring if you guys take it together.

i wouldn't have minded if orientation was longer, to be honest. After 10 days, i still didn't know my classmates too well. And a lot of that time was spent in the lecture hall... financial aid stuff, school policy, HIPAA, blah, blah... i think the best part for me was "discovery" when you get to open up your dental kits at your lab bench and go through all your new toys!

well, we're nearing the end of our spring break right now. They say we're going to have a lot more down time this quarter. Hope springs eternal...! I kinda miss being able to smell the roses every once in a while. But it's like a marathon. Second year's going to be much more work. I'm sure this is the last thing you guys need to hear, or are interested in, so enjoy yourselves as much as you can now!

Take Care.
Sincerely, Sujain 😛

Quick question: I chose CHELA as my Stafford Loan lender for the Stafford Loan portion of the financial aid packet. Do I also have to complete the online application at the CHELA website?

ya, the chela application is needed. shouldnt take that long.
also u may want to get information about their scholarship
i didnt fill one out last yr cos too lazy to fill it out.

thanks, sujain for ur valuable information.
i cant believe u guys actually get the april package before april! that's amazing. we didnt get ours till june.
man, orientation seems like a billion years ago. basically u just go to have a good time and try to get used to 13-041.

one more thing.
for the 10K kit, you may want to prepare a creditcard(rebated preferred) at the beginning of orientation. remember, ur financial aid may not have arrived yet. this is how it works for us:
you could either pay like 10K at one time or join their payment plan that spreads over 6-7 months and about 250 interest to ur 10K(no matter if u pay in full ahead of schedule). the good/bad news is some stuff is back ordered. good news is that u dont have to find place to store them like those 4 plus boxes aint enough. the bad news is that u r charged interest on things that u dont have yet. so i think our VP went to argue with the bookstore and make a more reasonable deal for all of us. (i forgot the exact deal, but something like charge as we get our stuff and getting rid of the payment program)

Thanks a bunch ecdoesit! 😀

How did you go about contacting dentists? Were they dentists you knew, or was it sort of a random selection process?

Hmm, okay, that sounds interesting. Maybe we can meet up an hour prior, grab some beers @ BrewCo and head on over to the Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI) to gaze at dancing teeth.

Awesome idea. 👍

I really like this idea too. I've already started an email list from the people who PMed me with their email addresses, and I'm hoping to get out an email with specifics of doing exactly what you have stated above (I think we'll need to decide on wearing something, or meeting somewhere first so we'll be able to find each other).

If you want to be added to my email list, PM me. Another possibility would be to start a group list through Yahoo! groups or something similar.
...

I have yet to receive my acceptance letter (or is it a packet?)...I just found out a few days ago that I got in when I gave Sarah a call. What kind of CPR course are we supposed to take? And what's this about collecting teeth?

Hey Literati,

No, the "financial packet" that I was refering to is online. It's the list of financial aid forms on the school website.

Cool fillings: If you want, I could scan the papers containing info on CPR class and tooth collection and send them to you.

Just open up ur yellowpage and start calling.
usually, the front office will pick it up. and then u just ask.
some office is familiar with the procedure, so u could just bring ur jar.
(we will actualyl use those tooth next monday, so no stress)
if they are not familiar, then ask them to ask the surgeon.
the best thing is to do this before summer
cos a lot of people(young people) will get their teeth done in summer break
so u will get tons
and not as much this "winter"for me

hi sniffles04,

yes, as EC said, the yellow pages are a great idea. I left a jar at offices I volunteered at, and when volunteering at a couple of health fairs I introduced myself to some dentists who were giving screenings, and they were more than happy to help.

If it gets really difficult, i would suggest you join DentalTown (www.dentaltown.com) and start a thread on their forum asking for help from dentists local to you. I highly recommend DentalTown to anyone who is considering dentistry. The dentists on that forum are such an awesome resource! And they sincerely go out of their way to advise and help.

Take Care,
Sujain 🙂

Hey guys,

i was emailed by sarah about being offered a room in Weyburn Terrance (preofessional school housing). As many of you are already aware, there have been many complaints and stories written about Weyburn in the past school year. Problems such as construction continuing through the school year, toilets/doors/draps not properly installed, FLOODING, and many other problem (sorry again i dont have the links to these article, but there on SDN somewhere).

Basically, what do you all think about Weyburn Terrance. Do you think they have completed construction 100% and have addressed all the problems from the previous year? Anyone one know how things are now and will be when we start school this fall? I emailed sarah these questions and i'll give you an update when she replies.

comments from current students in Weyburn or students who have friends in weyburn are greatly encouraged to give their input

Any answers, comments, advice on this topic of housing?

thanks all

Congratulations to you all for UCLA accaptance! This is my first post at SDN. I am still anxiously waiting... it's been three weeks since I had interview at UCLA .
cool-filling: Would you mind telling me when you had your interview? cuz I also had my interview in the morning and the interview day breakdown is exactly same as yours... that's why I am wondering if I am gonna be put on alternate list.... my interview day was March 15. Thanks...

Hey Fouyboy,

I know there have been a lot of horror stories about Weyburn Terrace, but I would think that they've cleaned up a lot of the "mess" since the beginning of the year. From what I know, they seemed to be a rush to finish the buildings, which ultimately caused a delay for many students to move in right away...this is probably the reason for many of their problems.

Of the few people I know who live there, they all seem to really enjoy it and haven't experienced any problems..yet. They like the atmosphere and the opportunity to live so closely to their classmates.

There are bound to be problems wherever you choose to live, which is why I decided to apply for housing at Weyburn. For me, it's worth the risk...at this point, i'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I even get housing... 🙂

Good luck.

Yes, there are many horror story about weyburn.
but given how much it costs and you are still getting a new place.
imo, it worths the money.

quite expensive to rent around westwood.
some people would rent somewhere off campus.
i live in palms which is about 4 miles away. and take the bus to school.
i need a roomate next year too. let me know if you are interested.

so how many of you are coming to the talent show so that i could reserve the ticket for you?

I'm going to the talent show...could you reserve a ticket for me?

About housing...my parents live in the Valley and have offered to let me live there for the next four years. I'm probably going to get a hybrid car because apparently you can drive them in the carpool lane. I've heard that some UCLA dental students commute from places as far or further than the Valley, so hopefully I can make it work too since living at home would save me a ton of money. I'm just really concerned about parking. Anyone currently at UCLA know if the commuters have difficulty getting parking permits?

If you will be living in the Valley, the worse they can give you in Lot 32. Just remember to apply way before the deadline.

Wow, really? Did Arnold's bill finally get federal approval or cater to those suspicious of his "buy Japanese" pitch?

Where is the valley exactly?
I know someone commutes as far as in OC.
And she does a lot better than me.
So, apparently there is no correlation between how far u live and how well you do.
Still you should keep in mind that your first two years is extremely time consuming, especially your second year. cos traffic doesnt die till after 7:30. could u study while you are in the library till then?
parking shouldnt be a problem cos you are a dental student. lot 2 or 9 welcomes you as long as you apply. if u r really worry, u could ask me next wed.

hey, ford has a hyrid car too! not just the japanese. i would rather get a bike though
but right now i m getting something even stronger than arnold's hummer, i.e. the Big Blue Bus =)

ecdoesit said:

Yeah, but the bill only would allow hybrids with a fuel efficiency of 43 (-ish) mpg. Whereas Ford's hybrid is around the neighborhood of 30 mpg. Thus not qualifying for the carpool decal. At least, that's what I read a while ago.

btw, for those predental students out there, you are welcome to contact me to reserve tickets as well.

Congrats all who are accepted!
I currently live in one of the newer Weyburn buildings. It's awesome here, I really have no complaints.. no problems as of yet, and the rent is a pretty good deal considering how close you are to campus and the fact that high speed internet, cable, and electricity & water are all included in the rent. Their staff is a bit unorganized, but when you meet them, they are actually really nice. However, I'm still not sure if they'd be able to finish all the buildings in time for September. Last year, my assignment was not ready in time, so I was offered temp housing at another off campus apartment. The school picked up the tab for moving your stuff to Weyburn afterwards and will provide movers for you if this happens to. Well.. I love my place.
As far as living further away like Palms.. personally I didn't like it and found it inconvenient. The hassle of taking the city bus to and from school was not fun. Wlls, enjoy your few months before dental school because you will grow some gray hair when you start school.
My regards.

gray hairs?!! i dont get any gray hairs, but i m almost bold. jk

so those 8 people who confirm that they are coming to the talent show. any pre-show entertainment? i get out around 3pm. we could grab a boba in westwood.

the best way to get to the NPI auditorium: i would suggest you find one of those off campus parking for 5 bucks vs 7 bucks on campus bcos they have about the same walking distance. the parking lot behind ralph(lower level) might be open during evening time when you could park for free. (sometimes they do that, sometimes they dont) or park on the curb for like 2 hrs. Assuming you are coming from the South(meaning wilshire off I-405, just find the intersection of Le Conte and Westwood, you will see the two medical building. one is the new ronald reagon medical center on the left. and then the old hospital on the right. you should be able to see a sign that says neuropsychiatric institute. i m sure there will be sign and tons of people there.

if you are parking on campus, lot 9 is proabbly the closest. walk back to westwood blvd, head south (toward the hospitals), then you will find it before Le Conte.

i have secured tickets for the above individual

niceteeth, i m working on it. will do that first thing in the morning. i cant guarantee if you will have a seat.

only less than 20 tickets left and it will be gone at the beginning of next wk

as for "food," it seems they have chips and dip, buffulo wings, etc it might be wise to eat beforehand. let me know what you think

Quick question: In our housing brochure, it says that ther are apartments available for single grad students in several "university apartments" in addition to Weyburn (Rose Ave, Keystone/Mentone, and Venice). Do dental students live in these place or are we restricted to Weyburn? Also, if we are able to live in these places, do ya'll have any feedback? I know Weyburn gets a lot of bad reviews, but I'll probably apply to live there anyways. Thanks ya'll.

i know 1 person living on venice, pretty spacious apartment, but kinda far from sch. free shuttle to and from sch every half an hr. free parking space. not a bad deal for graduate students, but since time is a factor, unless u could study efficiently on the bus and dont want to pay the ridiculous price for a tiny little place, i wouldnt go there. also there is a long wait list as well. i think keystone/mentone is the similar situation.

and a couple living on rose(actually they live right across the street), but these apartment are for married couple and with kids.

this is what majority of my classmates think: live close for first 2 yrs, then move out 3rd and 4th.

yo, dell is going to have 750 bucks off coupon for laptop tomorrow. i think it is the best deal in many places. they may not have the best computers, but best if u just want to satisfy the sch's requirement.

Hey there all you lucky UCLA-ers!!
I have my interview (oh yes, it IS the last one--haha...) this Friday morning, and I was wondering if any of you could maybe a) point me in the right direction towards a quick review of dental issues/insurance/etc (I am super nervous about getting a tough essay question!) and b) possibly offer up some good questions to ask during the interview... (ie. What have YOU found that you wish you would have asked during your interview, What do you think would be a beneficial question to have answered that is specific to UCLA) besides the whole, "So is the patient pool a large problem?" cause honestly, I think we all kind of know the honest answer to that...

Thanks so much you all! I truly hope to be joining you all in September...I feel like it is a long shot (I am not a Cali Resident) but hey, I am keeping my fingers crossed! Congrats to all of you who are in!
👍 😀

Hey Eric, Michelle, Shanna, Vivian, Adam, and Alfons (sp?),

I had a great time last night! That show was surprisingly really funny and worthwhile.

Eric, thanks helping us out and inviting us in the first place!

Michelle, I hope you had enough time to finish those novels!

C/O 2009 is going to rock this school 😉

-Eddie

a) I'd be ready to have a stance with any moral issues that may arise (say if a patient can't pay). I don't think you're expected to know very much about insurances. The question is also usually your opinion, so take a stance and use some examples (past/present/future) to answer it.

b) I'd recommend asking a question about research. And if you find out any information about your interviewer, try to ask them questions about their speciality.

Just try to relax and radiate enthusiasm. 🙂 Good luck!

Hey fleisch, for dental issues and insurance, I would go on ADA.org and just briefly familiarize yourself with the basics. I still have some info saved on my computer and if you are interested I could send them to you. One question I always ask my interviewers is -what is the school’s greatest shortcoming? Also be sure to touch up on where you think dentistry is heading. Good luck and hope to see you in fall .

To Eddie, Eric, Michelle, Shanna, Vivian, and Adam: It was great to meet all of you! Any ideas for our future talent show? I’m thinking a combination of the tooth dance and backstreet… a 5 teeth hip-hop dance team. 👍

Hey Eric, is this CDA conference free? It's too late to register online; the link has been disabled.

learn how to do crown preps and crowns before you come here to save yourselves...oh, about 1329082093842039472143 lab hours.

i second to that. it is kind of funny to hear all the taping, knocking, and sighing hours and hours after the "official lab" hours. But, I'd rather be in the lab than in the lecture. At least, time goes by faster=) Wait, did I already spend twevle hours equlibrate or more my typodont? more, definitly more=(

Hey you all!~
Thanks for all your great advice for the interview!
I think mine went really well last Friday--I absolutely loved UCLA....my student interview and my faculty interview (Dr. Bruce Sanders interviewed me!) both went really well...the essay question was a bit tough, but it seemed like they were only trying to see if we were proficient writers..🙂
I am keeping my fingers crossed about getting in...Sarah definitely said that the class is fairly full but that there ARE still some spots open...She said we will be hearing back by around next Friday....
I hope to be joining you all next year! You really can't get any better than UCLA!🙂🙂....
P.S. Any advice on housing that is close (I will definitely have a car) but not toooo expensive? (haha, i know you are thinking, yeahhh right!)...My best friend will be moving with me to Westwood if I get in and she will be NOT in school at UCLA but will be working in Beverly Hills....any advice?? I am not tooo familiar with the area, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hello UCLA folk! I'm not a big SDNer but I have a few questions. I just interviewed a week ago or so and was put on the waitlist, boo hoo. Please reassure me that there have to be some dorks who will decide not to go to UCLA and leave a space open for me, otherwise you'll be losing a very cool classmate to Tufts. I'm an out of stater so I know the chances are slim still but I think I had a great interview and on paper I'm confident, I mean I've gotten into a bunch of other schools but they're all private so can any of you guys tell me if past classes have had students who have gotten in from the waitlist??? Not many I suppose.

I don't know the chances of getting in off the waitlist, but as a fellow out of stater, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I don't know the exact number of people getting off the waitlist, but it's very possible. There're quite a few people who were on the waitlist, either pre-interview or post-interview (in-state & out of state) who are sitting in lab, on a Saturday, wishing they were enjoying the sun and beach. 😉
