Semester after next, I am planning to transfer to a college in the Dallas Metro Area. Right now, my top considerations are Texas A & M Commerce, and three branches of the University of Texas: University of Texas, Arlington, University of North Texas, Denton, and University of Texas, Dallas.
All of the universities I could find information on are ranked Tier 2, but I don't know about their individiual biology programs.
A & M is one of my top choices, right now partially because it has the lowest tuition.
Also, the biology degree plan at A & M and the current university I am attending are very similar. Almost all of my classes will transfer, and I will not have to take many additional classes beyond what I would need to take here. If I transfer to UT, I will have to take a more classes to graduate.
On the other hand, if one of the branches of UT has a superior biology department, I might choose that one. Does anyone know which college is the best for pre-dentistry? Is there a website or book with rankings of biology programs at different universities? Thank you!

I would pick the school in which most of your classes transfer. It doesn't matter if it's Tier 1 or 2 or 3. Two things matter:
1) it should be a 4-year university (not community/jr. college)
2) regardless of what school you go to, you must make as many A's as possible. Your GPA and DAT score count heavily.

👍 totally agree!! 🙂

I would also take into account which one is cheaper and which one is closer. For example, I disliked the fact that it took me 1.5 hours to drive to school, and then 1.5 hours to get back home. And gas is not cheap 😀

Texas A&M

Why?

Because they own Baylor Dental...and look at how many students they accept from A&M (Its like 17 accepted from AM and only 3 from UT)

That's a very good point 👍

Texas A&M is not Texas A&M Commerce.

Don't know much about UTD except that its hella expensive.

I have some friends who are pre-health at TAMU Commerce, and apparently its stupid easy and a complete joke.

Which is great, because they all have rockin' GPAs (while apparently getting drunk almost nightly), but they were sweating big time come MCAT/DAT/PCAT time.

Hope I'm not hatin' on anyones school but I'm just passing along what I've seen and heard...

All texas schools cost the same

see if you can fish out which school your top choice prefers.

I received an engineering degree from A&M (college station) and 6 years later took my prereqs at UNT. This application cycle they took three from UNT. The dean of admissions from Baylor (and I think houston, I missed that meeting) has come annually to UNT's pre-dental society meetings. While that doesnt translate to a glowing recommendation, at least it is a foot in the door.

I would pick the school that could offer you the most off Baylor's 'upper level sciences list'. (The other Texas schools dont list courses specifically).

That list is: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Histology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Immunology, Embryology and Biochemistry II.

Found here.

Between UTA, UTD, and UNT (I would take A&M Commerce out) I would go to whichever one is closest. They are all decent.

I graduated from UTA in biology. It's ok, it certainly didn't blow me away. Comparing it to what I saw UTD offered, I would say UTD has a stronger science program in general. UTA is a little more of a liberal arts school. I don't know much about UNT but I've heard good things. None of those schools are phenomenal but if you do well, all three will be good enough to get you into dental school.

As a side note, when I was at UTA, we didn't have a pre-dental program. (It was merged with the premeds and was a total joke) I've heard they've changed that but it seems like UTD has a much better predental group.
