Who here regrets med school?

Why did you turn this into a conversation about me? Fwiw, I did get admitted....I graduated as salutatorian of my high school class. Getting into a top undergrad is easy. If you think getting into Cornell undergrad is hard, wtf were you doing in high school? High school was a joke.

I think you're missing the point. Pursuing finance is different from "attending a random ivy league college." Lots of people do the latter but don't pursue finance and don't make as much money.

It's pretty tough to get into a good undergrad, especially depending on your race

I think it tends to depend a lot on similar factors to all other admissions....if you go to a nice private school and do well, or a very nice (and somehow known) public high school, it gets easier. If mom or dad knows people there (because they went there), it also gets easier.

Connections and making your interest known at the university of choice can help too.

Since we're discussing anecdotes, I went to a public high-school with 3,000+ students. Our valedictorian was a brilliant guy (who later got a bs. in actuarial in science + a MS in statistics inside 4 yrs) who was universally rejected from the IV league. He was talented in almost every way I can think of, and was still rejected.

However, he now is making 6 figures in his 20s working a stats job, so I don't think he gives a damn about his old rejections.

Lol I know people with 36 act/2400 SAT, 4.0 unweighted with 15 APs who only got into one ivy. Maybe if you're a female minority it's easy... White or Indian male, good luck...

Given that females are the majority in college now, I don't think being a female helps you anymore.

Majority in ultra-competitive college situations? I doubt that. Inb4 someone jumps on me and calls this sexist, when I'm not being sexist, just saying I don't feel that would be the stat.

good job on the humble brag. maybe your high school was a joke, handing out A's faster than Mcdonalds can make fries but my high school was tough and it cost some students a spot at some of the higher ranked schools despite having a stellar GPA.

if you're sold on finance, you would have done it, if its that easy then a medical student should have an easy transition into finance like you.

I went to a public high school in the suburbs. The top 20 in my class pretty much all got into the top 15 undergrads. We were all good test takers too. Sorry you bombed your SATs and SAT IIs bro.

And fwiw, I'm not URM. One of my white male friends got into every single college (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Caltech, Stanford) with a perfect SAT and perfect GPA. This guy had very standard extracurriculars. His parents didn't go to any of these schools. Maybe your school's students are stupid? What's the point of having a good GPA if you can't get a 1500+/1600 SAT.

We had "okay" extracurriculars. Some of my friends were top 20 AMC scorers in the country, etc. About half of us excelled in music, math, science competitions. But still, if you get a good GPA, have good test scores, and "ok" ECs, you'll get into at least the 'lowest ivy."

So my guess is you had subpar test scores and/or subpar extracurriculars. Hope that helps.

Must be a social ****** and/or had bad ECs. (Certain universities interview.)

I went to a high school that was about 80 to 90% white and 80% of the top 20 were white. And like I mentioned earlier, every top 20 student got into a top 15 university.

national merit finalist, eagle scout, varsity athlete, all 800 SAT 2s, very personable and honestly just a good overall and genuine person. not really sure how it's possible to have a better app all around. opposite of a social ****** if anything.. people just don't realize how competitive it is... there's literally no knock on this kid at all.

Eagle scout? I would hold that against him.

Everyone and their mother is a national merit finalist.

My white male friend had perfect SATs, perfect GPA, 5s on 13 AP tests, played violin. And did some random ECs. Basically nothing special EC-wise. Got in everywhere he applied.

When did this person apply? Unless college apps have gotten 100000 times harder since I applied, this person either didn't apply to the lower Ivies (like Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, etc.) or is worse than you think. Sometimes people don't apply to the lower Ivies, especially if he had good numbers. Because honestly, who the f*ck wants to go to Brown. (They don't have grades....)

My friends and I didn't blanket the Ivies. Most of them only applied to HYP and maybe Columbia and Penn. So not everyone with good numbers applies to an Ivy purely because it's an Ivy. Depending on where you are from, people would rather go to Northwestern, etc. than Brown/Cornell/Dartmouth.

He and I both graduated HS in 2011. He got into one of the lower ivies, but none of the top ones.

That's not that surprising. The top (HYP) and schools like them (Stanford, MIT, Caltech etc.) are super competitive and sometimes arbitrary and can pick based on a quirky EC. The lower Ivies are relatively doable for anyone with decent numbers.

Lol,, I didn't realize the Ivy's came in tiers or that it mattered.

For certain professions (like finance) it matters. Plus, I'm not from the Northeast so I guess I just know the "top" ones because nobody gave a crap about the lower ones. I think in the Northeast people might have a different perspective.

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. It's like random for the top schools I swear, because I really don't know what else this kid could have done. There's a ton more crap he's done too, I remember I was pretty pissed for him when it happened. I definitely think there are tiers though. No way Brown is even close to the top Ivys+ MIT, Caltech and Stanford

On the whole, women are the majority of college students.

As far as ultracompetitive schools go, Harvard is 51% female, 49% male. Yale is about equal. Stanford is 52% male, so not a majority, but very close. I don't know about others, but you can look them up if you want.

Therefore there's no real advantage to being female anymore.

Unless you're going for engineering.

Interesting, didn't realize the numbers were as they are. Thanks for that

Unless you're going for engineering.

Yeah, that would be one exception, but even MIT is 54.7% male and 45.3% female, so the numbers are slowly evening out there as well.

You didn't know most college students were female?

Eh I probably would have guessed 50/50, but in terms of at the highest levels of undergrad, no I didn't. I'm pretty sure my class is like 65/35

good job on bragging, looking forward to you getting your neurosurgery residency match . It will be an upset if you dont get in.

and yes I didnt get good scores, I transferred to USC from a community college and dont lose sleep over it one bit.

Why is the Allo forum having a conversation on high school and college...isn't all of that over and done with?

I know... But I was not impressed about the curriculum of a couple of schools that I looked at... I understand there is opportunity cost involved, but I ultimately want to be the specialist (not the mid level)... Also, med school debt will be the only big debt I will have by the time I am done with residency. I am a low maintenance guy. 90k-120k as a psych NP vs. 200-250k as a psych physician certainly did not make the decision too hard either...

NB...You are probably right in some aspects as well... If someone can't stomach the 'brutalness' of med school, NP/PA is not a bad choice...

Brutality is certainly what it is. You eventually get used to coming back from your evening jog and seeing all the other young professionals in the elevator about to go clubbing, while the only peeps you'll be hanging with are Goljan and Sattar.

But you gotta keep pushing through huehue. And this time, I think it's going to happen. Med school exams have made a bish out of me too many times. But now is when I'll have my revenge. I will become a man. I will make this exam my bish, regardless of how difficult it may be.*

You can't stop going ham in med school. It gets tiring to be firing on all cylinders all the time, and sometimes you falter. But you gotta recalibrate, restructure, and keep going again.

*And perhaps I won't. But if I think that, then I've already lost. Fear cuts deeper than swords.

Who are you and what have you done with Ark?

I'm rediscovered the Old Ark. The gamer. The one who was clever, resourceful, determined, and inventive, and who proved that over and over again. People can laugh at me for saying this, hell, they do, but I think that gaming brought out the best in me.

And you can't tell me that someone who has the dedication to practice lasthitting for hours doesn't have the dedication to do pulm practice problems.

Whatever works for you man. I hope you find your way out of your bad habits and kick some trash. You got this.

I actually kinda get the gaming thing. I'm not gonna lie, Kingdom Hearts was an inspiration of sorts for me, especially when I was younger.

I like your avatar - at first glance you think it's you and then you click on it and it looks like it's from a virtual reality game.
