Who is going to Case Western

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys!

I'm new to this, but I justed wanted to say hi to everyone. It seems like there are a lot of girls who are going to CASE. I'm also another girl and from Danville, California.
Angeleyes-- I'm also scared too. It's definitely nothing like California!

I wanna know too 😕 😕 . 2 sets of low speeds and 2 sets of high speed in our kits would cost more than 2500 in the market.

Don't forget about the curing light too!

Don't worry about everything...I am sure it will be a smooth transition for you guys and gals! You will make many friends during the orientation period and also if you live in apartments around the dental school (The Triangle, Waldorf, The Favne and of course, the Delt House!) You will also see a lot of dental students there too!

Of course, if anyone of you need someone to 'show you the ropes', I've got your back! 🙂

It is a great idea for the class of 2006 to meet up prior to orientation. That way you won't feel too uncomfortable entering the room of 70 not knowing anyone! Some of the people from our class met prior to orientation and that was a real ice breaker, since you will at least know some of the people! There are some pretty good pubs around downtown area (West 6th) to get you started!

Yeah, It is my favorite one. I showed this portable curing light to my brother in law over the Xmass break. man.. He was so impressed and ended up order 15 of them for his 2 new offices. 👍 👍

A bit about myself, I graduated from Mayfield High School in Cleveland and then got my BS from Cleveland State University. I moved from San Francisco to Cleveland 8 years ago, but originally came from "cold mother Russia" 😀 Feel free to PM me anytime 👍

L@@king forward on meeting all of you!

Mother Russia ehh, where?
I lived there for quite some time myself. MockBa, and I'm sure Cleveland weather doesn't even come close. But still cold I'm sure.

My father was airforse (retired now) so I'm not really from anywhere (spent half my life in Europe, however I currently live in Utah.

I'm getting stoked to go to Case, I just wish this semester would hurry up and get over so we could get started.

npuBeT wammmy! I've spent 16 years of my life living in Western Ural, so Cleveland weather doesn't get even near 😱 . Good luck to you and I hope to see you next year.

There is this kick-a$$ bar on West 6th called FUSION just a few buildings from Velvet Dog. We should definitely hit it sometime...

Are you going to school in Utah? I'm going to BYU right now.

Anyway I just got the fat reject from my state school (north carolina), so I'll be heading to Cleveland the first week in July. I'm really excited about Case. I really liked what I saw when I interviewed.

Quick question for current students. How long does the winter last?

I don't live in Ohio but I'm guessing Michigan is pretty similar... we have harsh winter here from about Dec - Feb. November and March are usually chilly but no snow or freezing temps. May through part of june is warm but usually pretty rainy. Nice summer weather usually starts end of June and goes through beginning of september. september, october are somewhere in between warm and cold.
But the main thing they say about Michigan weather is its totally unpredictable 🙂 i remember one year where it didn't snow until January, and sometimes the summer never does get nice and warm. It just depends 🙂
Ohio weather is probably overall a little bit milder than my weather, probably gets and stays warm a little longer and they probably get a little less snow.

we sure do have a lot of sdners going to case don't we? lets see:

Case 2009: Biogirl361, Mo007, vasco, grinningrice, jini, DDS2BE, wammy, jyoung, angeleyes.

I also have a friend that doesn't post here who I know is going. So that's around 14% of the class that's already been in contact with each other. pretty neat.

ps sorry if i forgot to mention anyone, please add to the list.

No, I'm going to Weber State. And oh by the way, there are two other people here at weber that I don't think post here that got into case, and I know one of them is going to case for sure, the other I'm not sure about.

That's cool. Weber is a good school. I've got a couple friends that go there and they like it alot. Rumor has it that there are quite a few Utah kids running around Case. I think that I'll miss the mountains, but it will be nice to have so many pro sports teams near by.

I just turned in my deposit today...I am from Tx and curious to see who else from TX is going to Case.

On the positive side, we don't have to suffer the last winter. On the other hand, I wish that Case has a schudule like Boston where student can do rotation during winter months at any preferred location.

I am considering myself a Texan. Had worked and schooled in Dallas, El Paso, Corpus Christi, San Antonio and of course Houston. 😍 😍 😍 I just spent my weekend there in Houston.

Wow, you have lived/worked in lots of cities in Tx...I live in Houston in the medical center...I am definitely going to miss it. But definitely planning on coming back here since most of my friends and family are here. Out of curiousity, where do you live now? Are you still hoping to get into a Tx school?

I'm currently 1st year dental student at Case. Nice to have another Texan to Case ... 🙂 🙂 You're living near medical center ? Cool... I used to work at St. Luke and Methodist, still on the payroll of Hermann as an as-needed employee and will definitely work there during my next summer off.

Wow! that is a big switch for some of us here in CA where our 4 seasons are spring, summer, fall, and getting ready for spring.... 🙂

I just got done filling out my Fasfa on the web. The financial aid office said that they would send everyone their own financial aid applications. I still have no clue how we are going to pay for all of this. So how much gov. loans can we get for the intire four years? Is it around 250K. I'm just trying to figure out how much money I'll have to secure from private loans.

it was my understanding from the stuff they gave us at interview that 38,500/yr is provided by government sub and unsub loans and the remainder of the case-determined budget (~another 30,000) can be made up by the case signature loan. I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure you don't have to take out any private loans unless you think that you will want or need more than the case budget allows for (for example if you have a family or other circumstances to provide for).

You will get 30,000 unsubsidized, 8500 subsudized and 3000 perkins (if apply for financial aid early) = $41500 from the gov. loans. The rest is from Signature Loan of Sallie Mae. My private loan with Sallie Mae has 3.75% interest. I didn't have to take much of private loan because I used my pension plan and 401k for living expense.

how early is "early"? I was planning on applying beginning of march.

how long of breaks do you have between semesters and years?

Biogirl361 said:

Between first and second year, you will have about 3 months off. Many people choose to stay and work on research projects with various faculties. Otherwise, the remaining years you will have about 3 weeks of summer.

If you apply before March 31, you may qualify for Perkins Loan, if I remember correctly. By the way, Case signature loan is a private loan offering through Sallie Mae. You will receive detail instructions from Case step by step how to apply for all your student loans. In the mean time, check and fix all errors in your credit history report and pay down all debts from the collection agencies 😉 😉 😉 .

Wow...that is a great rate. Thanks for the responses everyone. Well it doesn't seem as bad as I thought it would be...but with that said it is still so much money!

btw, is there a minimum credit score to get that signature loan? This loan is given out based on one's credit history. I just checked mine and got 699-715 on all 3 credit reporting agencies.

Your credit score is very good. Mine was 630 and my cosigner was 700. Your loan interest rate will go up with lower credit score. I don't know the minimum score to qualify for this loan.

Financial Aid lady at CASE told us (back in August interview), that you need at least 620-640 range credit score to qualify for a private loan. Anything lower, will be dealt with through a co-signer.

yu people are coming from CA? wow, why are yu comin here. its cold, snowy, bitter cold and rainy vs warm, really warm and sunny warm.

For all of you that live in Cleveland, I was just starting to look into housing, and was wondering if you could tell me some good / bad places to live, near or around Cleveland or at least places to stay away from. Thanks

I'm in the same position. I think i asked this question earlier in the thread and people said that the dental fraternity house, the waldorf, the triangle and one other place right across from the dental school (don't remember the name) were popular with the dental and med students. I just hope these places still have a good selection available in May when I'll have a chance to go down there and pick something out.

Usually around May is the best time to do your search because that is when people who graduate confirm or begin to move out. Also the apartment directly across from dental school is called 'The Fayne'

Any housing/apartments close to Case for married students w/kids?

There are also tons of apartments within 5-10 min walking distance on the Overlook Rd and in Little Italy and 10 min biking ride (popular with Case grad students) on Mayfield Rd. For the Triangle apartment, you may have to call and put your name on their waiting list for studio ($650) and junior 1 bedroom apartment ($840).

Is anyone done with SEALANT program? (Case students) What can you actually do after only 70 hours of class work to those kids? What was difficult about this program and what did you like most?

Today was our last day with Sealant program.   During these 3 weeks (2 in Nov and 1 in Feb), our class of 68 people had performed oral exam, made referral and applied sealant on 5000+ 2nd and 6th graders in 46 schools around Cleveland's poor neighborhoods. We had traveled and set up our units in every available space from hallways, gyms, cafeteria, auditoriums ... to libraries and passed out tons of goody bags with electronic toothbrushes, toothpastes and dental care brochures. We all had fun and did have an opportunity to know many classmates at the personal level. For me, I had learnt a lot and my diagnostic skill and speed had improved. and yessss.... I DO want to be a dentist . 😍 😍 😍

The Musketeer, would you like to share your experiences and pictures ? 🙂 🙂

Our clinical training in clinic will start next Friday (every Friday till the end of second year) with perio patients. I can't wait. 👍 👍

I have a question about the "half of tuition required by July 1st". Is this ~20k that they are referring to taken care of with our financial aid package... which means that we don't need to worry about it, or do we need to put down the deposit and then later get reimbursed when our financial aid comes through? It just seemed kind of odd getting a letter informing me of the requirement for the money if it will be covered with our financial aid package. I guess I'm just kind of confused about this letter. Anyone else, prespective or current students, have any info on this?

Thanks.

I think as long as you have your financial aid paperwork submitted by the deadline (April 30) then you don't have to do anything else. Case will know you filed for financial aid and it will be taken care of. at least this was my understanding.

what i don't know for sure is... do they take out all 40,000 (plus 7500 for instruments, 800 for health insurance, etc) all at once at the beginning, then send you a check for the remainder? how do you file for a waiver of the health insurance (I can stay on my parents insurance until age 24)?

Your student loan will be divided into 2 parts: fall and spring semester. Case will take out tuition, half of instrument and health insurance costs, then send you a check for the remainder for each semester. Your checks will be dispersed in Sept (Fall semester) and Jan (Spring semester).

To file for a waiver of the health insurance, go to this site:

cool... i love sdn, very helpful! 👍
do you know approximately when we should be filling out these online waivers? It says you have to be registered and have activated the case network account first.. when do we get registered and get our account? hopefully it is before they take the money out of our loans?

do they automatically take out the scrub fee, activity fee, lab fee, leasing fee also? are you required to purchase the same package of scrubs as everyone else, or can you choose how many pairs you want to order, style, etc? I do know everyone must order the same color from the same company.
Thanks 🙂

You will receive all info and instructions right after July 1. Don't worry about it, they won't take out the money of your loan.
