Just sent in my deposit! 🙂

I got accepted and my deposit is due on Feb 6. I loved the school but I don't know if I want to live in Cleveland. I got accepted at Nova too so it's kinda tought to choose cleveland over Fort Lauderdale.

Coventry is nice and close.. but it depends on what you find nice- they dont have good parking at coventry but they are nice apartments and close to campus and bars...

your priority should be school first, location second.

two questions:

did anyone receive any financial aid paperwork with the letter that acknowleged they had received your deposit?

also, for students already at Case, does anyone know how long the orientation goes on Fri?

thanks

If you plan to practice dentistry in Cleveland, definitely practice on the west side. The only chance you have to practice dentistry (sucessfully) on the east side if if you are Jewish. I know several dentist who are not Jewish that are thriving on the west side and several who are stuggling on the east side.

HuyetKiem, tell me more about Cleveland pls...I am a picky eater and must stay on an "Asian diet." heheh... I heard that there's a small asian town in cleveland, is that true? How is that like to be "car-less"?

thanks

sweeeeeeeeeeet. i thought i was going to be the only asian

sent in my deposit on the the 12th. I havent heard anything from the school lately so hopefully fed ex delivered it by the 17th. where do you guys think you are gonna live? I heard the west side is a good area (dont know how close to case though) and little italy was a good place, any advice of good places to live would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is not bad here at Cleveland except the snow and cold. Tons of cheap apartments within walking distance around Case, so you don't have to worry of getting up early in the winter. There is a small asian town nearby with chinese, korean and vietnamese groceries and restaurants. I heard that a new and big shopping center is underconstruction. They are not as big and fancy as ones in Houston, but enough to satify my needs. Car-less ??? hmmm kidda tough, just like any city in texas, things and places spread out over here, you may need your car. I know lots of people are car-less here, and they're doing ok.

PS: I hate the freeways here, no feeder road. It was really sux of driving around here in the first couple months.

depends on how much you wanna spend of each month. Apartments around Case are from 400 (studio) to 1200( 2 bedrooms) within walking distance. One bedroom apartment is around 600-800.

Westside is kidda far from Case and around 30 min drive in the morning.

i'm interested in apartments located RIGHT NEXT to the dental school. like next block no joke. are there any of those? and how much? does the school provide any find-a-roommate service?

Quick question for you Torontonians at Case...I think you're one Huyet?

Is there a way to get back w/ the train? Or do you guys just fly?

i am asian too. There is an Asian Plaza near downtown area. I am not panning to have a car either while I am in dental school. 😛 maybe we can take the bus there together if you don't mind waiting for the bus forever on the weekends 😉

I've heard that CASE's reputation way over exceeds the actual quality of training you receive while there. Even though they market more clinical (3 years compared to the traditional two) you have to consider the quality behind the training and the educational foundation that supports it. Just because you have your own operatory and more clinical time doesn't exactly mean it's a better school; especially when you consider the ridiculous expenses.

The only good thing about CASE is that it's located in Cleveland, Ohio which happens to be the greatest city in America. You have the worlds #1 amusement park Cedar Point, the NFL hall of fame, the rock n roll hall of fame, the flats, and you get to enjoy all seasonal weather which adds to the possibility of enjoying winter sports.

Conclusions:

CWRU Dental School = 👎

Cleveland, Ohio = 👍

I would not live within walking distance..... I go to grad school there right now and live within a 15 minute drive.....there are closer places (5 minute drive which I recommend) its kind of a sketchy area....although I know a lot of people that do live within walking distance.....I have a buddy in law school at Case that lives within walking distance.....just don't walk by yourself late at night (standard for any place that is downtown)

The dental school isn't downtown though

anyone get a letter saying they received the $1000 deposit along with additional information about the cost of education?

on one page, it says that the estimate for one year of study and living expenses is $55,000 with first year student required to buy $8,401 worth of instruments for a total of $63,401.

on the other page, it says that the total estimated expenses for a first year student is $69,560. eek.

first of all, that's a whole lotta money. second, i'm gonna start filing for private loans and this is going to cause me heap of headaches. :scared:

The first page I got that acknowledged the $1,000 receipt only listed the tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year as $42,500.00. On the next page, that tuition is listed with $13,389.00 in other expenses giving a total of $69,560.00 (including like living and everything). I don't have anything that lists $63,401, which is weird I'm not really sure why...

oh the one page with $55,000...i added that with the $13,389 living expense.

still though, the two figures dont match up. $63,401 vs $69,560. what gives?

I see what you're saying, although I am getting $69,260 vs. $69,560. It seems like there is a $300 discrepancy. (I got the $69,260 by adding the tuition, all the other expenses listed, then the estimated total other expenses). I have no idea why there is the $300 discrepancy, unless they are considering students who need the $240 Hepatitis B vaccination and something else. I have no idea though haha

Id like to add also, if you are moving to cleveland by yourself, you could consider living at the delt house. Its within 5 minutes from the dental school and the rent is crazy cheap. I pay now, 300 for rent and that includes all utilities( electric, water, internet, cable, etc...). I admit its not like living in the ritz, but its not bad....

Hey guys and gals, can anyone provides more info on the apartments around dental school. I prefer walking distance, too. 😛

Hey, nice to know there's another Badtz-Maru fan. I love penguins of all sorts, and you can't go wrong with a supercool penguin with attitute. : )
