awesome news about the scholarship!!! yippeeeeeeeee😀 😀 😀

huh my signature isn't working again!
That's because you already posted it once on that page. You can only post your signature the first time you post on any page. Now that we're on to the next page, you can post it again, but only once on this page, too. 🙂

Thanks guys! I hope I see some of you at UM@FAU this fall. 😀 😀 😀

My file at FSU was completed several days ago and today I was called for an interview, my first!!!

My question is, how should I prepare for interviews in general, and also what types of things should I expect during my interview (Dec 18) at FSU. What questions and what will I do and who will I talk to?

Also, how long will I have to wait afterwards for a decision? Are the odds good for getting in to FSU after receiving an interview?

the lady told me that they are still reviewing apps that were completed late Sept and early Oct.................and you were completed days ago and reviewed already????!!!

Well congrats, I hope it's very successful for you!

Best Wishes!!!!!!!

The FSU interview day is fairly short and easy. I personally thought the interviewers there were extremely arrogant, which is surprising considering it's FSU. I am quite sure they will ask you about your parents, so be prepared to describe them and your relationship with them. Everything else is fairly standard stuff.

After you interview, you generally hear within a week about the status of your application. I believe that they do not reject anyone they interview until April, so the worst that can happen is you'll be on hold. I think the odds of getting in after an interview is about 50/50, but I could be mistaken.

why is this thread dying out? it used to on the upper half of page 1 every time and now its sometimes back on page 4....boo

is anyone still waiting to hear about acceptance/rejection from miami in the 11/22 group? did we get delayed due to thanksgiving?

yea, there was another thread about that somewhere on here. Here's to waiting!

good luck and best wishes for a successful week to all FL people!!!

Not a bad problem to have, but one that is still troubling me and I'm sure others as well. Any of you guys have any input?

Go with the FAU campus it's where the cool people are. 😛

So, I just got called for an interview at USF, and anyone have any advice for the interview day? I am thinking about staying with a student host, because I feel bad about spending money...I'm heading up north this weekend for another interview...

Also, is it typical for REL to ask you what your clinical experiences were? Before he invited me for the interview, he said he wanted to know a bit about what my clinical experience has been. Looking back I wish I had talked more about my clinical experiences in the section in AMCAS where you could list your activities. I guess I had discounted some of them, because I didn't think they were "worthy" even though YES, THEY IMPACTED ME DECISION 😳

Well...any advice? 😛

Hi Jessy Congrats on the USF interview. I stayed with a friend from undergrad who goes there now but I know there were some hotels nearby. You can also ask REL about the student host program I think. The day started at 8am and ended at 3pm. They feed us a nice breakfast and then when we went to tour the hospital we got a voucher for a free meal in the caf. where there was subway, pizza, and taco bell. Anyway, two people will interview you. A med student and then a faculty person. REL is very nice so feel free to ask him any Qs. The interviews are closed fill and they have like a sheet of Qs they have to ask you. Nothing unusual just the basics, why you want to be a doctor, etc. I'd try to wear some comfortable shoes because you'll end up walking a bit. Anyway, if you have anymore specific Qs feel free to ask me. Good luck. 🙂

Hmmm not sure about REL asking that being typical, but as for the interview my friend interviewed there yesterday and she said that all the questions she got were the same exact questions as were posted on SDN interview feedback. This year's interviews have changed a bit and they have been asking more then the typical tell me about yourself questions. There has been a greater emphasis on questions on issues such as homeopathy (this is a very specific situation. Ask American Angel for the specifics.), healthcare, problem solving etc. My friend had one of the actual adcom members who sits on the deciding committee and who is a PhD in Biochem that works at the med school as a professor while acting as Dean of Diversity Initiatives for the main campus and USF as a whole. He's been on the adcom for years. This friend had zero student interviewers so far at both interviews they've been on in Florida.

Their advice would probably be to look at the SDN feedback page as that is what they did. Said person was saying that she thinks they are using a certain set of interviewers that they are circulating for different interview days that are asking certain sets of questions. But I'm not sure if that's true. Its just heresay.

I'd strongly advise you to look at Interviewfeedback page of SDN that is on the main page of SDN. Its an invaluable tool that gives the most realistic expectations of what the interview days are like. Go through the questions and just be able to answer a question with ability to reason. For instance on the problem solving question my friend asked her interviewer to clarify what they wanted to know with the problem solving question and he told her that he just wanted people to be able to say something other then that they'd toss a coin to make their decision.

In other words its not about right and wrong answers so much as the ability to be able to reason your way through why you answer the way you do. So be thoughtful in your responses.

Good luck. Ohh and again I can't stress how important it is to look at SDN interview feedback. it will help a great deal. 🙂

Thanks Guju.

I agree, SDN interview feedback is super useful...I've been using it and so far, I have no complaints. 🙂

Thanks so much, you guys have been very supportive. We need to get this Florida Thread back up to the top, because we Florida people are da bomb!!

To keep it up at top just start posting random conversations with each other. That's how the Fl. thread from last year became huge. It started with the now UMiami girls and some others posting about randomness. Then there's the girl at Duke who used to post on here. She was the most hillarious of them all. We used to blab about all sorts of stuff to entertain each other. That's the way to go.

where did you find our thread? I've been looking for it but couldn't find it! yay guju to the rescue!

So who is watching House tonight? Only 20 minutes to go! Man, I'm addicted to that show!

I'm waiting for the DVR to get far enough ahead so I can fast-forward through all the commercials! 😀

I never really watched medical shows (except maybe MASH as a kid) until I started going back to school recently. There are a whole slew of them; I was amazed so see so many, but they are not reality. Besides, it's much more fun volunteering at a real level 1 trauma center! 😀

Complete at all the Florida schools, still waiting for an interview... :\

I'm a fan of puzzles...House is the only medical show I watch. I like NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI Miami (i know everyone hates that one)....then again there was always Charmed!

Congrats on the invite! If you don't mind me asking, when was your file complete?

hey jessy, congrats on the invite.....im with guju though...I haven't heard about anyone being asked about thier clinical experience. I mean anything is possible and maybe he was just curious. After you interview, you have the opportunity to send more information into your file before they make a decision. So if you left any thing out on your AMCAS, make sure you send some info about it after your interview. I interviewed in Sept, so PM me if you have any questions.

They sent me the official "complete letter" bit on November 16th. I think everything was complete before then, but most offices are inundated with apps that it takes a bit of time for them to download all your letters and stuff.

THANKS 🙂

I will...I'm going to look a few things over in the next couple of days and I'll PM you if I have any questions. I am definitely going to make a list of all my clinical experiences to hand in. Silly girl...I'm just a humble Canadian.

Yeah, you can definitely update your file as much as you need to. Just email an update letter to REL. USF is a really fun interview day; congrats and good luck, jessy. 🙂

Thanks Q, you rock. I wonder if I saw you the other day at school...probably not though, because I didn't manage to see any first years. They were all studying for an exam....how did that go?

Anyways, KEEP OUR THREAD ALIVE!!

rise little thread rise...

So, Florida peeps...how was your thanksgiving? Suit feeling a little tight or was the turkey not that good this year? AND...how did everyone feel about that cold front? I was down at UM the other day and people were wearing leather coats...

Trying to keep the thread alive...feel free to banter...I want this thread to be kicking like last years 🙂

If anyone has been invited to 2 or more florida schools (public and UM) would it be possible to post how close the invites were to each other. I got invited to interview at UF last Monday, so I'm wondering if maybe the others are close to making up their minds. I'm assuming there probably isn't much rhyme or reason, but hoping maybe there is 🙂

haha i live in st pete and it was absolutely freezing last week. I went to Nordstrom and bought myself some uggs. I was sporting a jacket, gloves and uggs last week. I people didn't know I was born in NJ, they would have thought I lived down here all my life. But to be fair, it got in the 40s last week on our side! I hear another one is suppose to blow through next week and I really don't need it because I probably have walking pneumonia (oh well I'll wait to see what the doctor says tomorrow)

oh btw, i was in puerto rico for thanksgiving and i went to a bioluminescence bay. it was possibly one of the most amazing things i have ever seen. the water glows neon blue in the darkness of night. you kayak for about 30 minutes to a preserved lagoon, and then you can swim and your whole body is engulfed in neon blue dinoflagellates. i urge everyone to see this if you they have the chance.

I got my FSU, Miami and USF interviews considerably faster than my UF interview (see MD Apps for dates), so I'd say if you got a UF interview you're well on your way to the others! G'luck!

Yeah that totally does...I want to see floaty glowy things 🙂

Oooo btw Angel, I complain about the cold just like the next floridian. I think my interviewer the other day wanted to laugh at me because I was wearing a turtleneck sweater under my suit and said I was so cold... funny thing is I've lived in Canada most of my life... What can I say, I got aclimated to the hot weather 🙂

Y'all are going to laugh, but I actually ordered some wool socks from QVC. 😳 They seem like they'll be really warm, which is good for me, because I'm always cold. 😛

I had a good Thanksgiving, jessy, very relaxing. I spent most of it doing absolutely nothing, which is not a luxury that I have had very often since I started medical school. 😉

Carl, there is not any connection between when one school invites you and when another does. I submitted my secondaries to all three schools around the same time last year, and USF invited me right away, then UF a few weeks later, then Miami last. No idea why or how they decide these things.

yeah it definately doesn't take long to get acclimated to the weather out here! I'd never head back up north, this is home!

You will. :luck: When are you supposed to hear back from Miami? Soon, right?
